gaston lagaffe - gaffes et gadgets
L'histoire :Un drôle de type se présente à la rédaction du journal de Spirou. Personne ne sait qui il est ni ce qu’il attend. Il reste assis sur une chaise à fumer des cigarettes. Spirou et Fantasio observent ce curieux personnage à l’allure déconcertante. Fantasio est le premier à présenter aux autres ce type comme étant Gaston. Il ajoute que pour le moment on ignore tout de ce type. Spirou ose lui parler et lui demande ce qu’il fait ici. Gaston répond qu’on lui a dit de venir et qu’il attend. Il ne sais plus qui l’a Copie original du 07/1985engagé, mais c’est pour travailler. Depuis ce jour, ce Gaston introduit dans les bureaux de la rédaction un « mauvais genre ». Ainsi, il passe son temps à jouer au flipper ou à réparer sa moto. La première mission que Fantasio lui confie, est de faire quelques courses à vélo. Or il a trois accidents. Visiblement, ce gars ne sait pas rouler à bicyclette. Fantasio ressenti très vite une animosité pour ce drôle de type mou qui cause catastrophes et perte de temps…

This is a sort of prequel to the classic Gaston Lagaffe series, published in hardback in French in 1985, but covering the very first appearances of the character in the magazine Spirou, between 1957 and 1960. This is actually the 20th album to be published in this series with the weirdest numbering ever.
Something of a soulless commercial exploitation curio, this album has historical interest but little more as the character’s creators, Jidehem and Franquin, were still finding their feet at the time of first publication. The jokes must have been startlingly different back then, but have aged. However, three things come to mind:
* The humour is very slapstick, but actually is hugely violent and conflict-based with a lot of bullying and revenge. But nevertheless Gaston was from the start minded to be politically correct, if failing to meet his standards through his actions.
* There is a strangely premonitory anti-Millenials vibe: Gaston is a portrayal of feckless youth unemployable and misunderstood by his “boomer” colleagues despite evident talent. The colleagues are supposedly hard-working, but hypocritically just as prone to pranks as the youngster. However, they are (largely) shielded from the consequences of their own actions by their privileges and status.
* There was a huge political and syndicalist undertone from the very beginning with many jokes based on disputes about working terms and conditions.
All in all, the series was from the beginning very astute as to the state of society if not subtle in its humour.

Une jolie tranche de rire. J'ai adoré découvrir les débuts de Gaston. Je le trouve drôle. C'est simple et efficace. Parfait pour s'offrir une parenthèse joyeuse après une dure journée. Ce gars plein de bonnes volontés qui n’en rate pas une me fait rire mais je n’aimerais pas l’avoir comme collègue ^^”
Je dois admettre que je lis globalement assez peu de BD. Tout simplement, je crois que je n’y pense pas. Alors qu'au final, j'adore ça !
