This is an influential book. As a local encyclopaedia, this gives access to scholarship and research on the natural resources of County Laois.
When I began to become interested in lichens in 1987, I turned to this book for an introduction and guide to the local species in County Laois, and 28 years on, I am still tapping away at lichens.
County Laois is 664 square miles in area, one of the smaller to medium sized Irish counties. An encyclopaedia of this kind focussing on one administrative distict has the benefit of being tractable, as there ought not to be too much in print, and one can be wide ranging too, capturing aspects of the academic world of scholarship and research and applying that to the natural and cultural resources of such a local district.
I am sure there are a few copies under the stairs in the publisher's house. Ballykilcavan Press, Stradbally, County Laois would be interested in distributing a few more copies, if readers are keen to see this educational masterpiece.
