Tuper, a laconic aging cowboy in Montana with a mysterious past, agrees to help a woman find her five-year-old son, Mason. Tuper has three interests – guns, gambling, and women. He knows a lot of people and he can get things done, but this case is much more complicated than what it appears. What he thinks might be custodial interference turns out to be something much more sinister and sad. Tuper is helped in his quest by a mysterious young woman with mad hacker skills, and a network of friends and acquaintances.

Burrell writes the excellent Advocate series involving a children’s lawyer, her bff/law partner, and a handsome PI. Tuper played a minor part in one of the last Advocate series, and Burrell is allowing him to shine on his own in this book. I liked this book much more than I expected. I’m always nervous when I read a new entry from a favorite author (I have the fear I’ll be disappointed, or have to tell someone their baby is ugly), but I found Tuper to be an interesting character. He’s cranky and resistant to change and technology, and Lana, the young hacker, is an interesting foil to him. They have a sort of rocky relationship, but find their way to a solid friendship by the end of the book. I also enjoyed that one of my favorite characters from the Advocate series, JP, made several appearances in this story, providing a nice connection.

If you’re new to Burrell’s work, this is a great place to start. The references to her other series are smooth and worked into the plot in a natural way. You don’t have to be a fan of the Advocate series to like this one, but I bet once you read this, you’ll want to search out her other series. I look forward to seeing more from Tuper and his crew.

In the interests of full disclosure, I beta read this for the author, but I liked it enough that I purchased my own copy afterward.

Novel received courtesy of Goodreads.com First Reads Giveaway

"Mason's Missing" is the first in a series called "Tuper Mysteries" by Teresa Burrell. I thought the premise of this novel was very original. A child is missing and his Mother goes to Tuper to have him found. Where the child came from and to whom he belongs is the mystery. After that things got a little muddy for me. There were characters who were introduced but never mentioned again in the book. Two of the characters had two names so it was difficult to keep track of them. I found it difficult to keep the characters straight. At the end of the book, one of the characters summarizes the mystery. If it wasn't for that, I'm not sure I would've known exactly what happened.

Teresa Burrell has another series "The Advocate Series" so she is an experienced author. The book read, to me, like the author understood what was happening but that knowledge didn't transfer to the book.

Fast quick paced read. Some twists in the storyline till the very end. I hope Next book is about Lana?

Mason was last seen running towards a man the teacher assumed to be his father, and getting into a dark blue Toyota RAV4. Days pass and there is no sign or ransom, word of mouth reaches Mason’s desperate mother, giving her cause to approach Tuper. He is thought to be the best, and she would do anything to enlist his services. But the stubborn and honourable Tuper is not in this line of work for the money, he has his own code, and he lives by it. Agreeing to take the case, despite his suspicions everything is not as it seems, he stumbles across someone who can help him progress his investigation quicker. This new duo start the hunt for Mason, uncovering strange circumstances and buried secrets as they go. Mason is missing, but all is not as it first seems. Can they uncover the truth and find the boy before the unthinkable happens?

I found Teresa Burrell’s writing style to be really easy going, so much so that I read the entire book in a single sitting. I was right there along Tuper and Lana as they tracked down leads and began to build the foundations of their new friendship. Red herrings, murder, mystery, mistakes, secrets, and peril, it doesn’t get better than this to make a good recipe for a mystery story, and Mason's Missing (A Tuper Mystery Book 1) has them all. You’ll share the frustrations and victories of the characters as they delve deeper into the mystery and unravel the surprising truth about what actually happened. A really strong first book in a series, with just enough information about the lead characters that they remain an intriguing mystery you want to learn more about.

This shares a lot of DNA with the author’s Advocate series, which I prefer over this one. Tuper reminds me a lot of JP, who made an appearance in this book. Mystery was a bit convoluted but decent enough.

I want to know why the cover art is so bad.

Five-year-old, Mason Jenkins, is missing in Helena, Montana. Tuper (the only name he's known by), a crusty cowboy-type detective, has been recruited by Mason's mother to find him. The story follows lead after lead and interesting characters through a search that terminates in a very unexpected ending. There are people I hated and people I loved, and people who totally fooled me. This is a page-turner that I really enjoyed. A few characters from the Advocate series are incorporated into the story, but this is not a continuation of that series.

Tuper was introduced in an earlier book. Now he has his own series. He's an interesting, off-beat, old-school character who connects with a mysterious young computer geek to solve this story about a missing child. The setting is as much a character in this book as the people are...beautiful, yet desolate. I thought I had it all figured out, but I was not even close to what really happened. I received a complimentary copy in advance of publication.

This is a spin-off of The Advocate series. Tuper has been hired to find a kidnapped child. He knows something is not right with the story he has been given but he cannot figure out what is wrong. Lana enters his life the same night he was hired. Turns out she is good with computers and can help in his investigation. She uncovers more than either of them expected.

I liked this story. It is fast moving. Tuper and Lana are fun. Tuper is pig-headed and stubborn but so is Lana and Lana talks to herself as she works out scenarios for what could have happened in the lives that cross theirs during the investigation. Tuper also “knows” people and can get the help he needs when he needs it. Watching Tuper and Lana spar with each other made me chuckle at times. The investigation was interesting and intriguing. I read the book in one sitting. I was hooked and had to find out what happened and why.

I think this is the first book in the series. I cannot wait for more with these characters

I am a big fan of Ms. Burrell's Advocate series and was thrilled to see this new spin-off. I'll admit that it's been a while since I read the Advocate's Felony, so I didn't remember too much about Tuper going into this. Now that I've finished this book, I can't wait for more!

The mystery was engaging as always. I really enjoyed the twists and turns, and was definitely surprised by the final twist at the end! Tuper and Lana had a fun dynamic, and I was laughing at Tuper's resistance of technology. We also get some guest appearances from JP, which was fantastic! Looking forward to the next story by Ms. Burrell!

Really a really good mystery

I've always enjoyed Teresa grills characters. This new character, while adding JP and saw Sabre in the distant background kept the story moving along. Fall they were many twists and turns and a few confusing times it kept my interest off until the end. The end was not predictable. I like her new character s of Tuber and Lana. This book leaves you wanting more of this duo.

Excellent First Book

Although the explanations get a little convoluted in the wrap up, Burrell wrote a solid story with great characters. Tuper ...everyone needs a friend like this Old West favorite, the strong, silent type. And having a tech savvy side kick like Lana brings him into this century. Love that they have secrets to be revealed as the series progresses. Can't wait to read more!

As always I love Ms. Burrell's books! I love this story line and how the characters from her Advocate series (which I thoroughly enjoyed) are interwoven thru this plot. The characters in this one, as always, are so relatable it's like I know them in another life.

I'm on Teresa Burrell's list to be notified when anything new she writes becomes available.

Teresa does it again!

I have read every book in The Advocate series so far. It is my favorite book series. I was definitely not disappointed in this new novel with a new central character. Loved it. Hope there will be more. Judging from the ending, I think there will be!

First let me say, I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Secondly let me say, I truly love Teresa Burrell's "The Advocate's" series of books. Many of us readers met Tuper during the sixth book of the series, "The Advocate's Felony". Tuper is a semi-throwback to the mountain men of old, and you know he has a whopper of a backstory although he never spoke of it and it was never revealed. However, when you know "everyone" in Montana, and they all "owe" you...there has to be a doozy of a tale there. He also looks like Sam Elliot ladies! I have been really anticipating this book coming out!

Thirdly let me say, I was disappointed in "Mason's Missing", presumably the first in a new series with Tuper as the star. While Tuper was his crusty self, none of his back story was told unless you believe the story of the bear. I was really hoping to get to know Tuper and who he..er..was/is. But it wasn't to be-perhaps held back for the second book? One can only hope. Then there was Lana, a super computer hacker. Another mystery that seemed to come from nowhere with not much explanation. Yes she is hiding from someone, but who? And why? Enter Denise Wilkins to hire Tuper (and Lana by extension) to find her missing 5 year old son she believes was kidnapped by her ex. Before long the bodies, aliases, and speculations were flying like the Montana snow. By the end of the book I was very confused about who was who (or is that whom?), what the relationships were, and why and how it all happened.

What I do know is that this is a very fine author and I look forwarding to reading anything she has ever written or will ever write. This time I just got left behind because I know she has it in her to do so much more good writing! So I am now anticipating the next book....

Burrell writes the Advocate series involving Sabre Brown, a juvenile case advocate and her private investigator cum boyfriend JP Torn. Tuper played a minor part in the sixth book of the last Advocate series.

I found him mysterious, weird and very quiet in that book. But he looked equally interesting as JP Torn. Burrell may have decided to start a series with Tuper as a main character. While Tuper was his crusty self, none of his back story was told unless you believe the story of the bear. He’s cranky and resistant to change and technology. I was really hoping to get to know Tuper and his background. But perhaps the same is held back for the second book. One can only hope. Then there was Lana, a super computer hacker. Another mystery that seemed to come from nowhere with not much explanation. Yes she is hiding from someone, but who? And why? I also enjoyed that JP Torn from the Advocate series, made several appearances in this story, providing a nice connection.

So the story goes like this - Tuper was requested by Denise Wilkins to find her missing 5 year old son she believes was kidnapped by her ex. He knows something is not right with the story he has been given but he cannot figure out what is wrong. Lana enters his life the same night he was hired. Turns out she is good with computers and can help in his investigation. Before long the bodies, aliases, and speculations were flying like the Montana snow. By the end of the book I was very confused about who was who (or is that whom?), what the relationships were, and why and how it all happened.

I liked this story. It is fast moving. What I do know is that this is a very fine author and I look forwarding to reading anything she has ever written or will ever write. "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

When I started working at one Corporate America company in the late 90s, our software was pre- Windows. When we upgraded and transferred the data to the “new, improved simple English” version from the acronyms we were used to, it was a stressful time. Adjusting was mind boggling. Transitional training seemed to take longer than our initial training! It made the post college me feel antiquated and I was barely legal to drink!

I share this as a prelude of how preposterous it was for our Tuper to quickly and fully embrace the new technology of computers. I had to double check if I had accidentally downloaded an Abridged version because the communication among the characters is lacking, yet they seem to know what someone in CA has learned without it being evident they had talked to him or vice versa.
The story was good; as in the writing was solid with good vocabulary and structure. It just wasn’t easy to follow because of the loose ends or holes throughout. The minor characters involved in the mystery were too complex and confusing for the audio version.

I liked Tuper, but his growth was faster than a toddler making a mess in three minutes. And equally baffling. If Tuper was a PI used to working solo, he latched too intensely to incorporate Lana’s help and computer knowledge. It was like he handed over the reins. We never learned about him and his abilities. He really turned out to be a minor character himself.
I only completed this audiobook because I like the narrator. As Tuper calls Lana “Agony”, this was nearly agonizing.

Another great mystery, by Teresa Burrell

Tuper is hired to find a little boy named Mason. He takes the case because of it being a child. Denise, his mother, is frantic. She tells him she thinks his father has kidnapped him.
There are so many twists and turns I this case.
Lana, thus young girl he found at the diner, that Tuper's friend Clarice works at. A snowstorm is ready to hit. Clarice offers her to stay at her place. Lana is a wiz with a computer. She helps out looking for information online.
Tuper is determined to find Mason. Between Lana Clarice and a few of Tuper's acquaintances, they all help out.
Gordon, the father of Mason, gets murdered. Who did it? Then, two more women come into the picture. What are their connections with Mason and Denise? More things unravel, and Tuper is determined not to give up.
Lana finds out more by hacking into several sites to uncover more information and leads.
More people are exposed.
Teresa Burrell keeps you guessing right to the end. Great dynamics with Tuper and Lana. Lana has her own secrets and is hiding from someone that she is scared of. Can't wait to see where that goes.

I really like Burrell's Advocate series so was excited to try this one.
Like the Advocate series, this one was a quick, easy read.
Where this book was different, is that I didn't love the main character, Tupper, as much and I never felt like I really got to know him. He is a gruff, old man with an unknown background who knows everyone in the small town and dabbles in helping solve crimes. He doesn't want the cops to know when he's been helping, unless it's his friends, which seemed very unrealistic and a little forced.
We also meet Lana, who we know has something in her background and that she is running from someone but we never get her story either, which bugged me. I'm sure both their stories will come out in future books but I didn't appreciate what little character development we got in this one.
I was excited thinking I had the mystery figured out for about the last 100 pages and man was I wrong. The book took a turn I wasn't expecting, which I always appreciate.
I did like that JP from the Advocate series made a guest appearance in this book.
This book wasn't bad but not a series I will seek out in the future.

Tuper is an aging cowboy from Montana with the looks of Sam Elliott and a way with guns, gambling and women. He also has a way with solving crime. When he is approached by a woman pleading with him to find her 5 year old son who was taken from school how can he refuse. But Tuper soon finds out that one mystery leads to another.

Once again Teresa has written characters that you can't help but like. From Clarice the bartender to Lana the young woman who happens into Tupers life and seems quite content to stay there. With mad computer skills Lana helps Tuper on the case while hiding a secret from her past. Mason's Missing is a fast paced read with twists and turns that keeps you guessing. If you have read any of the Advocate books then you know what to expect...books that are a sheer pleasure to read and characters that feel like family. Mason's Missing did not disappoint and hats off to the beginning of another great series.

Circuitous Storyline Keeps You Guessing

I love Tuper, the main character, from having read earlier novels by the author. While I did not take the time to review Tuper’s appearance and immediate prominence in the plot, new readers may not have the same “feel” for his attributes and that would be a shame. I selected this book over the next in her “Advocate” series purely because this was a “Tuper” story and will likely do the same for my next “read”. This book’s plot bounced around to keep you guessing to the point that I sometimes lost sight of the storyline. I believe the plot can be too convoluted and, unlike many of Hollywood’s religious epics, a “cast of thousands” does not spawn awe in the eye of the observer! Well worth reading, this novel continues to pull into the next “Tuper” offering!

Great Read

I came across these characters through the advocates series by the same author and always thought Tuper would make an awesome protagonist in his own right.

When Tuper, a avid outdoorsman and lone wolf is approached by a distraught mother to help find her missing 5 year old, it starts him on a journey that will test his skills to the limit. When key players start turning up dead and it seems like everyone, including his client, is lying to him, he becomes more determined to find this little boy and who he actually belongs with. With the help of a talented White hat hacker, they slowly get some of the answers they need. Just as they're closing in on the likely location, a huge snow storm hits and their efforts are halted. Can they get to the boy in time to save him.

I was drawn to Mason’s Missing as I am a fan of Teresa Burrell’s The Advocate Series, featuring Sabre Brown, an attorney and child advocate. Mason’s Missing is the first book in Burrell’s Tuper Mystery series.
Tuper is an older man who lives a simple life in Helena, Montana, likes the ladies, knows many people, has a penchant for helping others and for solving mysteries. A desperate Mother approaches Tuper, and asks him to find
her 5 year old missing son Mason, and there the action begins.
The story has many twists and turns, as well as primary and secondary characters; it actually became a bit convoluted for me. All in all Mason’s Missing is a satisfying read; I’m planning to read the second book in the series Finding Frankie. 3.5 stars.

Incredible

The narrative was deeply immersive, drawing readers into its emotional landscape with remarkable intensity. The storytelling was so compelling that it momentarily blurred the lines between reality and fiction, creating a visceral reading experience that transcended typical narrative boundaries. Despite the external environment being warm and sunny, the prose was so engaging that it transported the reader completely into the story's setting.

Tuper, Clarice and Lana provided a firm character support, as a host of others contributed to the search for Mason. There were several plot twists and a disturbing entry into mental illness, but many unexpected good results were still achieved.

MASON MISSING by Teressa.Burrell
The words my son is missing, a parent never wants to say. Denise wants Tuper to find him. Yet,she is keeping something from him. The father out of work. The vehicle used for the abduction regristered to someone else. Pieces are not coming, but the lying is. Intriguing plot, how can Tuper find the child, and now it has turned deadly. The plot kept your interest, the characters were well described. Became more than just a child missing, and readers will definitely enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

A boy is missing. People are being murdered. And Tuper and Lana, two very unusual characters, are trying to solve it. This is a nice easy read. Toop is a very likeable character, who lives in an old 1 room cabin in the hills of Montana, as are Lana, a girl hiding from something, and Clarice, a more or less normal bartender. Toop is a PI who always “knows a guy” who can help him out in finding what he needs to solve the crime. This could be a stand alone book, or it could be a series. I definitely wouldn’t mind reading more about the adventures of Tuper and Lana.

Where's Mason?

As a German I knew in Belgium used to say: Outstanding Good (with a hearty voice). I couldn't agree more! Tyler is a good old boy of a bygone day and when he said he'd find that woman's boy, he pushed through the lying, sneaking, name changes, and the killing, even the worst storm in a hundred years and he never gave up. With a hacker on the run and his "I know a guy" helping, you know he'll "get ' er done." The twists and turns will keep you wondering and the end will make you more than satisfied. Well done Teresa! 👍👏😅

Mason's Missing was a great book that was intriguing and suspenseful right from the start. I was left guessing the entire time and when everything connected at the end, I can honestly say I never saw it coming. The book was fast paced and exciting so I never wanted to put it down. I found all of the characters very likable, even though Lana sometimes got on my nerves. I hope to see a follow up book because I'd love to learn more about Lana's backstory and see more of Tuper's adventures.
