Avery Shaw is living the dream … kind of. She’s officially moved to her dream house and her boyfriend Eliot Kane is making her host a housewarming party to show off the new digs to her family. All is going well – other than the endless arguments over food and hiding from Avery’s family, of course – until one of Avery’s enemies comes calling. Avery’s former boyfriend Jake Farrell broke up with Cara Carpenter weeks before but she’s still stalking him … and Avery in the process. When Cara turns up dead at a high-profile event, not only is Jake a suspect, but Avery and Eliot are, too. The Michigan State Police wrestle the investigation from Jake, promptly turning Avery from the hunter to the hunted. The state police investigator assigned to the case is all up in Avery’s business – and Avery is cracking under the pressure even as she insists on covering the case, much to almost everybody’s chagrin. From the stress associated with the new house, Grandpa’s constant naked visits to the pool, and Eliot’s insistence that Avery own up to something illegal, things are starting to get tense. Avery is on her heels for a bit before starting to put the pieces together. When the truth comes out, though, the answers are welcome but the danger is not. Can Avery survive to irritate everyone another day? Or will Michigan’s favorite reporter finally succumb to a mouth she can’t quite seem to control?
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
I love Avery Shaw! This one is just as good as the others and I think we see a different aspect of Avery with Jake. I love Elliot and I love her grandpa! I love her Grandpa swimming in the pool naked lmao reminds me of the antics of Aunt Tillie! Love these!
I know I always say it's amazing and great but it truly is!! It's a must read you never expect the outcome. Well except for Avery being herself and saving the day. But a great book in this series. What are you waiting for??! Go read it you won't regretit.
Thought it was great that Avery met a female with her interests. Hope to see that work in the direction it's going. Another great read and enjoyed the grandfather antics. Have already downloaded the next book.
Okay, this seemed to take a long time to get to the investigation and to be honest I nearly gave up. It was a lot of unnecessary family arguing and drama, oh so much drama and most of it is caused by the main character. However I stuck with it and although the arguing and snarky comments didn't stop, it did get better. I have been with this series from the start and never really got why Avery and Cara hated each other so much, other than because of the sheriff but in this book we learn a lot more about Cara and everything is explained. While Avery can be annoying at times and is definitely not my favourite character out there and I have no idea why her boyfriend puts up with her, she is loyal to the people she likes and does get to the bottom of an investigation, like only she can do. The mystery was actually good and at some point humours, if only she could be less whiney.
Eliot talks his girlfriend Avery into having a house warming party but soon wishes he didn't. Not only do they get unwanted guests turn up at all hours to swim in there swimming pool but it also makes them prime suspects when a murder occurs. Her ex boyfriend and the sheriff Jake 's ex girlfriend and the woman who they kicked out of the party is found dead floating with the stingrays on the grand opening day of the new aquarium. Jake can't investigate and the Michigan State Police are called in. The detective seems to keen to investigate the three of them than anybody else. So it's up to Avery to find the killer. Avery never liked Cara but even she is surprised by what Cara was capable of. Can she get to the bottom of the murder before one of them is arrested? I am not sure the narrator is the right person for this series. I don't think Avery is supposed to be quite as whiny as she makes her out to be. I do like The other character voices though. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Avery Shaw is the most awesome character in any book I've ever read!! She's intelligent, intuitive, tenacious, & has the most wicked sense of humor!! She & BF Elliot have the best relationship - he gets her & more importantly allows her to be herself, & she gets him too! Ex-boyfriend & sheriff, Jake, is a great supporting character. While there wasn't much interaction with Tad the tool, we get to see more (heehee!) of Avery's grandpa in this book. We can definitely tell where Avery gets her wackiness. The plot is entertaining & enjoyable as we ride along with Avery as she tries to solve the mystery & find the murderer before the police. I have never laughed so much & so hard! I will admit I was very surprised by the conclusion. Never saw it coming. My one wish - to see Avery acting out Star Wars with shark mittens!!! That has to be hysterical!
When Jake's exgirlfriend, Cara, is found dead in a pool of stingrays at the reopening of the aquarium by Avery, Eliot and Jake the detective called in from the state police refuses to look further than the intrepid trio. Assuming that they are in a three way relationship following the rumours spread by the victim herself.
Numerous attempts to get her removed from the story and sacked from her position at The Monitor fail and as usual Avery decides that the only way forward is to solve it herself.
Housebreaking into Cara's with her quirky posse she finds evidence that Cara was, herself, making some rather unusual investigations and using her files Avery finally captures the killer with the help of a brightly plumed Grandpa.. much to the disgust and irritation of Detective Fraser.
So funny you'll want to gallop through in a full out reading binge!!
This is one of my favorite series large because the author has done such a great job in the character of Avery. She's fascinating, intelligent, brave and ultra-snarky. Her job in this book is to cover the opening of an aquarium.
Two things she didn't expect, though, Ted Ludington to show up and a dead body to be in with the stingrays. Needless to say the opening is delayed.
Then there's blackmail, a smarmy lawyer and, of course, the villain is identified.
Actually, there's a lot of real neat characters in this series. The people she works with at the newspaper are really interesting, the woman that works at Eliot's pawnshop and her interactions with him and Avery are neat, the relationship between Avery and Jake in the past is handled well and other characters are also really cool.
Avery and Elliot have moved into their new home and everything is going great apart that is for Elliots insistence on throwing a house party. So starts declared Avery Shaw book, always a pleasure to read with a lot of snarky one liners and a decent murder mystery to solve. The author always forces good job of concealing who the killer is until the last chapter which keeps the books interesting and Avery herself, she's definitely one of a kind. Added bonus we get to see a lot more of grandpa in this book and I'm boot just talking about the naked swimming.
I love Avery. But more than that I love Eli. I love how he lets her be herself while not smothering her. I had to stop reading another series by this author for the fact of the boyfriend being a control sissy. But onto this book... her grandfather makes me giggle.. see all you have to do is not mind that he drives over to your house naked to swim and he'll stop. I'm not sad The person who died in this book died... I'm sad she was asleep for it.. ok that was harsh... but I am glad Avery found Jake someone who is amazing. Excited for them to all hang out!!
Another awesome book by Amanda M. Lee. Avery is a gifted investigative reporter who has a mouth on her. Because of her mouthy way of communicating and her over zealous self worth she is a hysterical character to read. She always solves her mystery and beats the other reporters out of stories while getting into trouble in more ways than you can imagine. She doesn't like people and when you see her view point on the people she has to deal with you can completely understand and even agree with her. A must read but read the other stories before this one so you can appreciate the relationship dynamics.
OMG thank you thank you for killing off Cara I couldn't stand her and I totally agree with Avery she needs to pick out Jakes new girlfriend thats really the only way he is ever going to find someone lol.
Eliot is a man with the patience of a saint and I also love that he can eventually admit when he is wrong about some things to personally I think he is totally wrong with the Fawn thing and he should have fired her long ago but hopefully he will soon cause that bimbo is just a trouble maker.
A really great mystery I didn't pick the killer that was a nice spin and I love grandpa he is just awesome.
Avery, Jake, and Eliot find the dead body of Jake's last girlfriend floating in the soon to open aquarium when checking out security cameras that had failed. State police investigation is focusing on the trio, to bad they didn't do it. Now Avery must clear their names by finding the real killer. I didn't know who the killer was until the end. Read them all in a week wish there were more.
I don't get why they always doubt Avery because she is always right. I love Avery and all her sarcasm. Nobody is safe when Avery starts looking into something. She digs until she gets the truth. I really had the suspect narrowed down to two people and this time Ms. Lee got me. I was wrong on who it was was. Great job on this book, I was throughly entertained. I look forward to the next Avery book.
I think the stories just keep getting better. I love the way Avery isn't afraid to take down anyone, including the state police. She has an interesting sidekick this go-round , that provides a lot of laughs . She manages to solve the case, save the day, grow as a person, and bring absolute mayhem to those around her.
Love snark and humor? Then Amanda M Lee is the author for you. Unwritten and Underwater is one of her best Avery Shaw books yet. What happens when Elliott, Jake, and Avery are suspected if murder? Humor, love triangles, snark, mystery and baked grandpa. A must read for anyone looking for a laugh.
Seriously, can this writer do no wrong? I love all of her series. Each time I read a new release I change which series is my favourite. Snark, a fun mystery, great characters...what's no to love? And thank you for more Grandpa!!!! Do yourself a favor and read these books. Putting them on kindle unlimited is the cherry on the sundae.
Just finished book 11, loved it. Laughed, smirked, just sad That I finished it. Worst thing about it is now I have to wait for book 12. Wonderful charters, loved Grandpa. Great dialogue. If you have not read any of Avery series I recommend starting with book one, that way you see her grow and mature, well continuous process.
I really like this series. I spend a lot of time laughing out loud. The characters are great and funny. Your main character Avery is the best, with her sarcasm, and her attitude. She kept me interested throughout the story. I hope you are writing more books for this series. Please hurry with book 12 asap. Thank you for great writing.
Absolutely hilarious hijinks ensue in every Avery Shaw mystery. This series has all the bells and whistles of great intrigue and romance, and makes it awesome by using quirky characters and snarky dialogue. A must read for those who like these qualities in their mysteries.
Avery is everything I wish I could be and so much more!
Great addition to the series. I love all Amanda M Lee’s series, but Avery is my favorite. Her quirkiness and her brashness is hysterical and the quips between her and, well everyone, are pure gold! I do love my fellow snarky girls.
Avery Shaw she is strong willed, sassy, has a big mouth, is never wrong and I love her character. I read all 11 books in succession. Laughed through every book and enjoyed each book. Thank you for the series but please don't stop the series here. I want to see Jake date the lady Avery has chosen for him.
When Avery, Eliot and Jake discover a dead body (Jake's ex, Cara), they become suspects. The State police officer assigned doesn't seem to want to find other suspects, so they and Avery's grandfather investigate. Lots of fun "watching" the characters interact.
This book was hard to put down. Amanda M. Lee has a way with making me laugh. I love that Elliot and Avery are together and continue to work things out. I also like that Avery, Elliot, and Jake can work together as friends. I love to read books that get my emotions involved. I can't wait to read more of the books.
These books are so good. I love Avery and her Family. This one centers on one of Jakes ex girlfriend and as usual, Elliot has to help find the happy ending. If you have not read this series you are missing out on a lot of laughs as the spunky reporter is determined to find justice..
♥️ Loved the whole story but the ending was…”prime”
Avery Shaw cultivates snark like it is the answer to all problems in life. When she, Eliot, and Jake are all suspects she doesn’t get distracted by the circumstances. Seeking the answer is second nature. Annoying everyone along the way just keeps her entertained.
I love Avery Shaw and look forward to each book. She is such a wonderful character, always entertaining with her sarcasm and wit. The secondary characters are just as good in each role they have. The mystery is always spot on and never dull.
The queen of humorous over the top snarky mysteries returns for another round of mischief and mayhem. This series always delivers laugh out loud reading fun. Avery has matured a bit in this one as she continues to come to terms with what she wants out of her personal life. On the professional front she continues to be a practitioner of take no prisoners journalism.
This book is just as awesome as all the others. I love Avery's quirkiness and snarkiness, it makes me laugh out aloud most often. Please keep them coming, I always need an awesome book in my life, and yours always hit the spot.
Another great Avery Shaw book. So funny I always laugh out loud. Avery always gets her story and in trouble but that's what's great about it. Along with a naked grandpa, n Avery's smart mouth I love it.
