Down in Key West, Sherri Travis and her best friend Marley are looking for a little fun in the sun. Promising to be back for last call, Marley leaves the Rawhide Saloon with an Elvis impersonator. She doesn’t return. With Hurricane Alma turning toward Key West, and the police saying Marley must be missing for seventy-two hours before they start searching, Sherri and Lexi Divine, a six-foot tall drag queen, hunt for Marley amidst the chaos of the evacuation.

It has been too long between installments, 3 years in fact since Ms. Smallman picked up this series. I missed Sherri and her no nonsense personality. Although the author has not been idle since then, her fertile imagination was set on “Singer Brown Mystery” her latest series. I am mostly happy she came back to her roots and once more with a wonderful touch and oodles of ideas she has plunged one of my favourite protagonists into an entertaining saga. This time Sherri is in Key West with her best friend Marley for a little fun in the sun. Or so they thought. After leaving Rawhide Saloon, Marley vanishes…..
If you are a lover of soft mysteries or an aficionado of female sleuth protagonists you will love this one. What is Florida without a hurricane today we have Alma turning toward Keys West leaving Sherri to look for Marley amidst the chaos of the evacuation.
This tingling adventure is a fast and fun read very hard to put down. The storyline has a lot of momentum and keeps the tempo all through. Sherri is a colourful and down to earth character who plays well her part and is amazingly well described. The style is simple and a bit wry with a narration that is somewhat rough but this has not distracted me from flipping the pages and enjoying this entertaining story to the max.
Reading Ms. Smallman “The Last Call” is a pleasant change, the story is not taxing at all, you can zip through it in no time and be captivated by Sherri who is thrown into the middle of a mysterious saga searching for Marley accompanied by Lexi Divine, a six-foot drag queen…..what is not to like.
(Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book for an honest review) Last Call by Phyllis Smallman is another Sherri Travis adventure set in Key West. Sherri and Marley have come over to the Rawhide to help friend Lexi Divine figure out who is skimming money from the hot and busy bar. Not only are there thieves, drug dealers, and murdering scoundrels to dodge, Marley goes missing just before hurricaine Alma hits Florida’s tiny area of Key West. Lexi Divine accompanies Sherri as they search the home of an Elvis impersonator, graveyards and the side streets looking for clues as to where Marely could be and if she is still alive. Sherri and Lexi are becoming exhausted, extremely fearful for Marley, and hunted by police and criminals as they race with time against the storm!
Sherri, Marley, and Lexi, three friends from different times; each with their own problems and trying to find solutions. This was a fast read with questions and surprises around every corner. The friendship between the three women was fun to read about, but Sherri felt lost and needed her friends more than she even knew. Thank you for allowing me to read this advance readers copy and write a honest review.
Be prepared for more of Sherri’s wisecracks and knack for solving crimes! Last Call is the seventh installment of the Sherri Travis Mysteries Series by Phyllis Smallman. Smallman has earned several awards for this series including, Florida Writers Association, Canadian Best Book Awards, National Indie Book Awards, Next Generation Indie Book Awards and Crime Writers of Canada.
In Last Call, we follow Sherri Travis and her best friend Marley on their much-needed small vacation to Key West. There they meet up with Lexie Devine, a six foot cross dresser who manages the bar called The Rawhide. Determined to enjoy their short two-day trip before the hurricane hits, the girls let loose. When Marley hits it off with an Elvis impersonator, she promises to return before last call.
“If I didn’t worry, my brain wouldn’t see any action at all!”
When the next morning rolls around and there is no sign of Marley, Sherri starts to investigate. Things don’t add up so she goes to the police, but they are of no help. Marley has to be missing for seventy-two hours before they are willing to do anything. Frustrated, Sherri decides to take matters into her own hands to find her friend. Bringing along Lexie, Sherri goes on the hunt for her friend and nothing is going to stop her from finding her. Certainly not a hurricane.
“The old KISS principal.” Lexie’s face showed her confusion, “Kiss what?!” “KISS- Keep it Simple Stupid”
I found Sherri Travis, our main character, very funny and loyal. I love my main leads to have humor, strength, loyalty and drive. She has them all. The interactions with her friends and her determination to find Marley, not to mention that she can take care of herself, makes Sherri such a fun and likable character. You do not have to have read the previous books to thoroughly enjoy this one although I would recommend reading them all and in order. For those of you looking for a good crime series with a funny, down to earth character than this series is for you. FIVE stars!
Last Call was an interesting story that keeps you wondering. Sherri and her friend Marley travel to Key West to catch some rays. They go the Rawhide who is run by Sherri's friend Lexi and while there Marley meets an Elvis impersonator who she finds very attractive. Marley decides to go for a walk and drink with this guy somewhere else and promises to be back before last call.
Last call comes and goes with no Marley in sight and with Hurricane Alma set to arrive shortly Sherri and Lexi are determined to find out where Marley went.
More and more secrets come out as the story goes on.
Will they find Marley before the hurricane arrives? Will Marley still be alive?
Having not read the previous books I was a little nervous that I would be lost but I was not at all. I received a complimentary copy of this book through netgalley and look forward to reading more books by Phyllis Smallman.
Sherri is in Key West to help a friend. She quickly solves the problem of the disappearing money, but then her friend Marley disappears. They race to save her as Hurricane Alma approaches.
Key West is one of my favourite places, but I have wondered what it would be like to be caught on an island with a maximum elevation of 18 when a hurricane can bring on 20 ft surges. I can't imagine what evacuation would be like on that single highway that crosses causeways that are several miles long. The drive to Miami takes 5 hours under ideal conditions.
I love this series and I am hoping that this was not the last one ever. The title "Last Call" kind of made me think that it might be, sob!! Keep up the excellent work Phyllis!! I see that you are now living on Salt Spring Island, I am on the little island next door to you, Vancouver Island!!
Wow! A trip to Key West. A fast in and out mini vacation before Hurricane Alma hits with her best friend Marley. What could go wrong, right? Wow! Couldn't put it down.
