An Adepta Sororitas story

Venturing into a dangerous ancient city alongside the grim Sisters of Battle, Imperial Missionary Marcus Amouris discovers that the Emperor works in mysterious ways… and so do other, darker powers.

READ IT BECAUSE
It's a look at the Sisters of Battle through different eyes, and a chance to see a part of the Imperial Church we rarely witness – the often dangerous (physically and morally) work of the Missionarus Galactica.

THE STORY
When Imperial Missionary Marcus Amouris calls for aid from the Astra Militarum for the savage tribe he is bringing into the Emperor's light, he is dismayed when their saviours turn out to be the grim Battle Sisters of the Adepta Sororitas. Joining Sister Adamanthea and her warriors as they enter the ancient City of Whispers in search of the prey that hunts the tribe, Marcus discovers that the Emperor works in mysterious ways… and so do other, darker powers.

"Missionary Marcus Amouris is getting ready to seal the deal on converting a planet of primitive people to the doctrines of the Imperium. The finishing touch; he believes, will be a well-orchestrated show of force from an Imperial Guard detachment. A completely different, yet entirely more lethal, branch of the Emperor’s might arrives in a contingent of Sisters from the Order of the Valorous Heart. Led by the imposing Sister Adamanthea, they set off into the City of Whispers; a dark and foreboding place which has claimed the lives of warriors and hunting parties.

And, as the blurb states, there are some dark powers at work as well. I will not get into them here; for Worley has obviously put a lot of work into making them legitimately horrifying.

With the character of Amouris, Worley keeps the reader guessing throughout as to his true motive(s), and the honesty of his resolve. At worst, he may be entirely complicit in the ruinous powers running merry havoc on this backwards planet, and at best he is at least guilty of letting his ambitions run far ahead of what should be pure devotion to the spreading of the Imperial Creed. And yet, Worley keeps him remarkably sympathetic throughout. Normally, with a smarmy character like this, you wouldn’t mind either way; so long as his life is finally punctuated with a bolter round in the forehead. But, with the treatment here; you can feel the dread regarding the portents that the intervention of a group such as the Order of the Valorous Heart pose; as well as the terror Amouris feels as he attempts to reconcile the myriad whispers that dance in his mind.

However, the true star of the story here is Adamanthea. Worley has a vivid, descriptive style, and he brings these stoic, lethal ladies to life. Adamanthea is brutally curt and efficient; a perfect leader figure for an Order that prioritizes penitence and zealotry. Worley’s portrayal of her in particular; an unchecked whirling dervish in battle with her Eviscerator spinning, brings to mind a wicked combination of a Sororita and a Flesh Tearer.

On top of that, the action scenes are top-notch. The ‘About the Author’ section on Worley cites his contributions to graphic novels; and the battle scenes in Whispers certainly have that kind of flair. There are some moments at the climax which toe the line with over-the-top, but Worley keeps it utterly engrossing and exhilarating.

Again, the characters, the visuals, the action, all done extremely well. Perhaps my only niggle is that there is no resolution to the question of what message the Ecclesiarchy got a hold of; that prompted them to send the Sisters. Amouris claimed it was a call for the Guard, but we have no idea what message actually got out."

It’s a pleasure to read a story which really shows the Sisters of Battle as a characterful, powerful force, Worley’s depiction managing a fine blend of creepy religious fervour and genuine military threat. A relatively straightforward plot leaves plenty of space for friction between the two main characters and their differing objectives, with plenty of action balanced out by a strong sense of atmosphere all wrapped up in a smart concept that presents an interesting, satisfying view of the Adepta Sororitas.

Easily the best of the trilogy by Alec Worley dedicated to everyone's favourites Female Spees Mar...no, wait, they're completely different (of course they are, just joking). Again, if you're a fan of the Adepta Sororitas like me, read this trilogy of short novels if you want to have a REAL look on the Sisters of Battle and don't waste a single second on the crappy Sisters of Battle omnibus by James Swallow, you'll have a better value overall me thinks.
Sister Adamanthea FTW.

The second of Alec Worleys' efforts for Black Library and what a story. Violent, mind-bending, I feel he captured the essence of both the heroes and villains perfectly with great descriptive ability. You'll understand that last part if you give it a go.

'Hunting beasts is a base labour, Sister,' said Marcus, nodding sympathetically. 'Wholly unworthy of the Adepta Sororitas, but fides ante vanitas. "Faith before vanity," I always say.'

Another solid action and violence packed Sisters of Battle short. Good stuff with lots of carnage and destruction. Check it out.
