Presents the history of the capital city of Lithuania from its 14th century legendary beginnings up to 2009, when Vilnius bears the distinction of European Capital of Culture. Besides applying the traditional apparatus of historical investigation and referring to a large amount of sources, the special feature of this book is the ample quotes from travelers who passed through the city during their own life journeys. This list ranges from known artistic giants (such as writers Dostoyevsky, Ostrovsky, Tolstoy, Döblin, and Brodsky) through political and cultural icons (such as German general Ludendorff and the Emperors Napoleon and Alexander), to equally compelling forgotten European personas who mark entire generations back to the 14th century.The subtitle refers to the fact that until quite recently, ethnic Lithuanians rarely formed the majority of the inhabitants of Vilnius. Книжка справляє надзвичайно сильне враження, адже пропонує інший погляд, інакший спосіб писання історії міста. Замість поставити Вільнюс в центр, Лаймонас поміщає його на периферію, дивлячись на нього очима чужоземців, для яких місто є лише тлом фрагментів власних біографій. Тут немає історії міста як такої, читач натомість опиняється в контексті знайомих йому великих європейських наративів, але в малознайомому місці, і, таким чином, замість будувати в голові ще один наратив (окрему історію Вільнюса), додає місто як чергову яскраву локацію цих більших подій Східної Європи. Absolutely one of the best and most interesting reads on Vilnius. Authentic historical sources provide good insight how the city looked like few hundred years ago. In addition to that, it seems to be objective source of information. Who could have thought that between 1939 and 1945 more than 90% of city population was lost and replaced by newcomers. I don't remember such things from my history classes in the high school.

I purchased this book while visiting Lithuania. It very much aids an understanding of the country by focusing on Vilnius. Because the history is so traumatic it took a long time to finish this book.

Для більшості гостей, Вільнюс це периферія Європи, місце де починаються ліси, язичницькі ритуали і зникає цивілізація. Присвоїти собі Вільнюс, іронічно, найбільше хочуть окупанти – автор дуже детально описує політики Російської імперії спрямовані на стирання польської присутності, всі ці пам'ятники Пушкіна, російські вивіски і згадки про священну Русь, знайомі нам з нашої історії. Достоєвський, який минає Вільнюс на шляху до Європи бридиться поляками і євреями, а його наступники - символісти на кшталт Брюсова, уже захоплено бачать Вільнюс як свій і зворушуються тим таки пам'ятником Пушкіна.
Німецькі військові в часі Першої світової шукають у Вільнюсі, натомість, затишку вуличок, які б нагадували їм їхні рідні містечка.
В радянський період і період незалежності значне місце у текстах займає пам'ять про знищених євреїв і виселених поляків, місто сповнюється привидами відсутніх і відчуттям розірваного коріння.
Читаючи, я весь час думала, як перегукується ця історія з історією Львова і як хотілося б мати такий глибокий, а водночас цікавий текст про Львів.

I picked this up on holiday in Vilnius as I wanted to know a little more about the city. I'll confess to having next to no knowledge about Lithuanian history prior to reading, so I'm not able to comment on it's perspective or accuracy, but as a book it was engrossing and informative.

The author shows Vilnius through the eyes of a cast of visitors to the city: from Papal emissaries to Napoleon and Dostoevsky, the book brings to life the often bleak history of the city through the stories of outsiders. This approach complements the book's over-arching themes of diversity and displacement, and supports the final conclusion that the city as it stands today is demographically unrecognisable from that of its past. It's naturally good for anyone interested in Lithuanian, Polish or Jewish history, but also tells broader tales of empire, and smaller human stories.

I did find the author's tone a little over-worked at times, and the occasional references to Vilnius' centrality in Europe unecessary. Extracts from other texts are also often quite long, which I felt worked in the book's favour. Ultimately I think it's well worth a read, with relevance far beyond the history of a city.

Lietuviai puikiai žino, kokią dalį mūsų istorijoje sudarė įvairių tautų taikus gyvenimas. Tai dar ryškiau buvo istoriniame Vilniuje. Žydiškos iškabos, lenkiška kalba ir lietuviškas patriotizmas susijungia į vientisą kultūrą, tarpusavyje verda, kol galop gaunasi XX a. pradžios Vilnius. Really fascinating historical account of a city that I knew absolutely nothing about. More than that, it's a meditation on national identity in light of the fact that Lithuania (or the land now known as Lithuania) has changed political hands and blended so many cultures over the whole of its existence. Briedis frames Vilnius through the accounts of visitors over several centuries, as major developments in European history touched, and changed, the city. I can imagine that creating a coherent narrative for such a complicated place would be difficult, but Briedis pulls it off with great poignancy and depth.

De schrijver is uitgegaan van geschreven documenten (vooral in de oude geschiedenis) en van getuigenissen van schrijvers en andere bezoekers van de stad door de eeuwen heen. Puiki knyga su labai įdomių požiūrio į miestą išeities tašku - tarsi apie asmenį, kuris gyvena savo gyvenimą, įtakojamą aplinkybių, kurių pats negali pasirinkti. Graži kalba. Privertė labiau susimąstyti apie mylimą miestą, pasidomėti dar labiau, kitom akim pažvelgti į įvykius, kurie galbūt nesąmoningai mus visus čia atvedė prie vienokių ar kitokių sprendimų, pasirinkimų, požiūrių. Ну, книжка Венцловы про Вильнюс мне понравилась больше. У Бриедиса отличная идея показать город через рассказы проезжающих через него людей (отсюда и «город странников» в названии), но что скрывать – далеко не все воспоминания одинаково интересны. Рассуждения самого автора о Вильнюсе тоже не особо цепляют, за исключением последней главы – как раз в отличие от последней главы Венцловы. В общем, книга так себе, но балл за шикарное издание я накину.

Be abejonės, nuostabiausia knyga apie Vilnių kurią skaičiau. Pataisymas: galbūt dėl to, kad tai viena pirmųjų knygų skaitytų apie Vilnių, kuri parašyta žvelgiant į jį visai kitomis akimis. This book left me cold. It's a compilation of perspectives of old dead guys . . . just what the world needs more of. The accounts are bleak, the the impressions and the situations about which they are rendered grim. Furthermore, this book feels like an attempt to make real Vilnius through history by any means, identifying all possible mentions of Vilnius in historic travelers' accounts, whether those accounts are mere reports, issues of complaints, or attempts at true description.

The author's theme is that Vilnius has traditionally been a crossroads, with a diverse population, and a model of European integration. The book is quite interesting, but it focuses more on outsiders' views of Vilnius rather than the experience of the city's residents themselves.

A great history of Vilnius that manages to be broad and intimate at the same time, even if the whole doesn't ever quite add up to the sum of the parts.
