The novel is primarily based on male prostitution among other things. Although declared as an offensive read, in many ways, this book is an acute representation of the lower middle class of Mumbai in the 1970s.

What I liked most about this novel is the raw depiction of life in 1970s, exclusively pertaining to the lower middle class and the language. I particularly liked one phrase that the narrator/main character Pradeep uses time to time: 'Dokyachi/Menduchi powder hone'.
The book had become notorious for its 'obscene' content when it was first published. However, there is nothing offensive about it. More and More people are realising that now. I guess the discussion about sexuality, its mere mention was considered scandalous back then (even today, to a certain extent!). Jayant Pawar has talked about this issue and the resulting ignorance of this book by the elite writer groups among other things in his foreword.
As the blurb mentions, Khot has described many popular localities in 70s' Mumbai precisely. As for the subject of the novel, its not just about the male prostitution, but topics like gang war, gambling are also covered. Also, the way of life in general.
