When it comes to writing sexy contemporary romance books, supernatural romances, or an erotic paranormal romance series, New York Times bestselling author Calinda B purrs with excitement, just like her fine Abyssinian cat. She's got a life full of adventure and stories, a head full of imaginative realities, and a willing partner to help her with "research." What more could an author ask for?
Storm Shift This is an interesting start to the series; it kept me laughing and it kept me turning pages. The humor, by far, is my favorite part of this book. It appeals to my quirky, very off kilter sense of the absurd. My main complaint is that we don’t really get to know any of the characters. At the end of this book, I feel like I have so many questions left unanswered. It’s a good way to keep me intrigued to want to keep reading the series. But it’s also a fine line to dance with me; too many unanswered questions and I may not want to keep reading. Right now, I want to know more, and I want to know what other hijinks the shifters of Charming are going to get up to. Power Shift It took a lot for me to finally get into this book. This first half was slow going for me. I couldn’t understand why the dynamic between Chia and Cecil, and Chia and Hung, and Chia and D'Raynged, and… well… Chia and everyone was so very different than it had been in the previous book. I was also easily frustrated by the overwhelming number of references to Chia’s lust and their mental, physical, and emotional manifestations. The second half of the book, where the intrigue takes precedence over Chia’s base urges was much more enjoyable to me. I loved that we got peeks into Hung and Cecil’s pasts as well as some hints about the powers Chia might possess. I still have questions I’d like answers to, and it looks like Chia has a new nemesis to deal with, so I’m intrigued to see what else this series has in store. Blood Shift Gah! I wish, just once, I could whole-heartedly love the book without wasting chapters wondering how it’s possible for Chia to behave like an even bigger idiot than I’d already seen her be. I’d also really like to see her controlling her lusts more than letting them constantly control her. I liked the story. I loved the action and intrigue. I adored learning about what appears to be Chia’s supernatural abilities. But I would almost kill to see Chia take even a fraction of a moment to stop and think before she rushes headlong into “too stupid to live” territory. There’s something about this series that makes me think of it as an urban fantasy version of the Stephanie Plum series. It’s showing a lot of the same elements that drive me bonkers while reading them, but it also has a lot of the ones that made me love the earliest books in that series. Soul Shift Wow. So apparently what it took for me to love the story wholeheartedly was for Chia not to be the main leading character. I adore who we see D'Raynged to be in this book. There are so many more layers and depths to him than we’ve been allowed to see up to this point. Even Chia seems to have grown by the time we reach the end. What I didn’t expect, was that I would actively dislike Hung during this story. I can’t wait to see what the final book has to show us. Star Shift There’s action, intrigue, betrayal, and an overall sense of embracing one’s destiny. This story has a very Matrix-like feel to it. There were plot-points that made me feel especially close to Revolutions. It was a bit of a heart-wrenching conclusion to the series, but I loved nearly every minute of it. The only real complaint I have is the whole ‘going at it like randy bunny rabbits’ Chia and D'Raynged get up to for the whole book. It quickly became more than a bit much for me. I could have done with a few less bedroom antics out of our leading couple and maybe had some scenes with what they were learning in order to defeat the all-encompassing evil instead. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
Chia Petit is grieving for her grandparents death and taking on a new job at the same time. Chia is learning that it's her job to protect the shifter community from the public at large. Yet is she able to protect herself from the dangers surrounding her? Someone doesn't think so but who is it? Was Chia's grandparents death an accident or something more sinister? Your answers await you in Storm Shift.
This is my second experience with this author. I must admit that I enjoy her writing style and characters. The story and characters are rich, bold, compelling, complex, unique, intriguing, real, raw, and down to earth too. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Chia Petit is trying to keep her job but outside forces want to destroy everything she's worked for and thensome. Hung Durand isn't making Chia's job easier either. Charming wants Hung gone for good no matter the cost. Hung's just trying to do his job as a bounty hunter. Chia's laws are making it difficult to even do that period. Can Chia keep her job? Is Chia willing to give up her attraction to Hung? Who wants Chia's job? Your answers await you in Power Shift.
I like the direction this series is going so far. The characters and story are complicated, complex, rich, bold, and mysterious. I'm interested in seeing where this series goes.
Chia Petit is addicted to her roommate's blood but she doesn't believe she has a problem. She also hasn't notice property around Charming is being bought up among many other things either. Hung won't go near Chia until she gets clean. Whose buying property? Can Chia end her addiction? Your answers await you in Blood Shift.
D'Raynd has lived a long time but his origins are anything but humble. In order to save himself and his roommate Chia Petit, he needs to go back in time. He needs all his wits about him if he's to succeed in this task and not lose himself along the way. Can he save them both? Your answers await you in Soul Shift.
I didn't expect the story to head the direction it did but I'm sure glad that I read it. The story and characters are real, rich, bold, honest, raw, mysterious, and complicated too. I look forward to more from this author. This book surprised me from beginning to end. Magic and mystery abound throughout taking you on a fantastic and delicious read that will lead you to wanting more in this series.
The entire Charming Shifter Mysteries series consists of 5 books. Included in this set are: Storm Shift: Book 1; Power Shift: Book 2; Blood Shift: Book 3; Soul Shift: Book 4; and Star Shift: Book 5. Below is a review of three of the books to give you an idea of what you will find in the set.
*** Reviewing “STORM SHIFT -- BOOK 1” *** Chia Petit was shooting clay marbles out of the sky with her Ruger .22 resolver as she tried to come to grips with the fact that her grandparents had died a couple of days ago!! It had been her Grandma who had urged her to run for Town Manager to make a difference in their community. Her grandparents had always believed in magic and the supernatural. Everyone was calling their deaths a boating accident, but it had been a clear day and such an accident made no sense to Chia. Returning to her office, Chia answered a phone call from the director of the mortuary who told her that the plot her grandparents had paid for was owned by someone else! Chia ran out of the office and headed for the mortuary before he could say another word! He needed to fix the mistake – or he would find the zoning permit he wanted for a new wing would not be getting the Town Manager’s stamp of approval.
On the drive home, a doe ran in front of Chia and her vehicle clipped it slightly as she slammed on the brakes. The doe shifted into a young woman with a gunshot wound. She spotted the hunter between two trees. Panicking, the woman jumped into the cold water and Chia ran after her to help her out further downstream. Leaving Megan Giles as the ambulance pulled up, Chia tracked the hunter – but she couldn’t explain the strange, pleasant feeling in her blood as she tracked him. Using her calf-roping skills, she subdued and plastic-tied the poacher once she caught him and called the police.
When she came to question the perp, Chia was told that Megan had died. The bullet had traveled in her body as she walked and pierced her lung. The poacher, actually a bounty hunter, was denying he shot her; said he found her that way. She told them to hold him for the 72 hours they could while she looked for proof. She drove to the place she wanted to examine and loaded her gun. As she turned around, a man held a gun pointed right between her eyes! Was this guy working with the murderer? Was he going to try to kill her? How would she escape?
*** Reviewing “POWER SHIFT – BOOK 2” *** The Town Manager, enforcer of the laws, was chasing after an unregistered bounty hunter along the pre-dawn icy and darkened streets. Aside from the slippery surface offering no traction, the 6 ghosts that fluttered around her head obscured her view, and a pack of dogs, eager for the possibility of a chase, nipped at her heels and ended up tripping her. Her elusive target, of course, got away . . . again.
The town itself, situated in Charming, Alaska, is a sort of refuge for supernatural beings and Chia wants to keep her town safe. With bounty hunter Hung Durand distracting her, this is not an easy task – especially when she keeps having to fight her attraction for him. Someone wants to take over the town, but they will not have an easy time of it against Chia and her crazy friends. Will Chia “get her man”? Will she figure out the mysterious plot against her town and foil the plans of the greedy?
*** Reviewing “BLOOD SHIFT -- BOOK 3 *** Chia Petit was at her Town Manager office in Charming, Alaska, trying to write an apology letter to her ex-boyfriend/bounty hunter, Hung Durand. They had finally hooked up a few months ago, but her roommate, the vampire D’Raynged, got her hooked on his blood by convincing her to share just a drop. She loved the rush and the temporary skills it gave her. And, she said, once she knew if she really had magic, she wouldn’t need his vampire blood anymore! But Hung was not happy with what she was doing and told her to end the addiction or he wouldn’t be back… and he walked out! He’d been gone a week and she really missed him.
Her assistant updated her on current situations. A new alarming development was that someone unknown appeared to be buying up lots of land around Charming. When her assistant left the room, a fly landed on her papers – then, in a flash of light, Hung was sitting on her desk. He said they needed to talk – and repeated that they would not get back together until she ended her vampire blood addiction. She walked outside to talk, while her ever-present personal ghosts — the ones who seemed to represent unprocessed feelings about things that had made her feel guilty or were simply bad — fluttered over her head.
When Chia got upset with Hung, she ran toward the woods and was knocked down by the eagle shifter Hung had been chasing last week. Hung chased after it again as a falcon. But Chia spotted a sign that said “Property of Mountainbear Development”, a company owned by Red Mountainbear, the guy who had tried to kill her best friend Husky shifter Cecil Carpenter. These surprise purchases should not be possible! Chia is in charge of zoning and planning -- she signs off on these things! How did he slip through? She hadn’t gone back far enough in tracing the buying company! And Hung told her that she was high on the vampire’s blood and unable to do her job fully anymore! They argued but nothing was resolved.
Chia tracked down her friend Cecil and their talk turned to her vampire blood addiction. He told her how it changed her, but she insisted she wanted to know about magic as her grandfather did, and the blood allowed her to see magic and the supernatural around her. Before he could continue his warning, he spotted a property sign bordering the protected beach coastline – that wasn’t even legal! As she struggled to pull out the sign, Cecil pointed to a group of bears running directly at them! Cecil said they were shifters, but not friends, and she needed to fight – as he shifted and ran the other direction! She used the post as a baseball bat and struck the lead bear. It managed to claw her arm and rip the post away, then grabbed her tightly against its fur and tried to rip her head off! It suddenly stopped – Cecil had come back and was attacking. She crawled on the ground toward her tranq gun. Shooting the head bear did not stop it and it came in for the kill. A dark shadow came over them all like a tornado and she and the bears were flattened on the ground. Then a man approached, commenting on what good intel the eagle shifter provided, and he dragged Chia by the ankle telling her Mr. Mountainbear was now ready to see her!
There were so many parts to the puzzle! When would they make sense of this? Chia was being discredited in her job, she had an odd dependence on her vampire roommate, her old enemy was buying up land in secret, her life was in danger, and Hung is pulling away from her! Will she figure out everything in time before she loses her town along with her credibility? Twists and turns keep the reader spinning in all directions!
The books are well-written with a fast-paced and intriguing story line. The characters are developed well and feel like old friends! You can’t go wrong with this author!
Chia is a kick*** girl that does not know what her secrets are, because her Grandparents passed away unexpectedly. They were into magic and more trying to protect all the shifters that lived in their town. You have two different bounty hunters one good one bad both shifters. You have Chia's best friend Cecil who is a shifter Husky, who loves her and protects her. Will Chia and the good bounty hunter fall in love or will they kill each other? Great read. I received a arc copy for my honest review.
Power Shift: Hunting the Bounty Hunter beneath Haunted Alaska Skies
Will Chia is still a tuff cookie, and can not stop her feelings for Hung. She cares for Cecil her is a husky shifter and if it was not for him I don't know if she would make it on some of her fights. Both Hung and Cecil protects her and loves her. Of course you have to laugh at her roommate and her the way they play tricks on each other. Will Chia finally give into her feelings for Hung? Can she save the Shifters, her town and herself? The only thing I felt about the story is some of the scenes seemed almost the same as the 1st book. I received an arc copy for my honest review.
Blood Shift (The Charming Shifter Mysteries Book 3)
Action packed. Chia has trouble with Red Mountainbear again. He's brought more evil to Charming. Hung will not renew their romance because of her addiction to D'Raynged. Can Chia stop Red from taking over the shifters and humans? Will Hung accept her addiction to the high she gets from D'Raynged? Can she stop her addiction? Will she ever figure out if she has magic and learn how to use it? I received an arc copy for my honest review.

Storm Shift 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Charming story with witty banter and playful dialog. I enjoyed reading this short book about new town manager, Chia Petit. She is tough talking heroine but has a gooey center for those in need and for those she cares for. The book left me wanting to start the next in the series immediately.
Power Shift 🌟🌟🌟🌟 The second book of the Charming Shifter Mysteries Series was even better than the first. The plot twists and turns, the return of characters from book one, and lots of paranormal creatures all came together in an interesting mystery set in Alaska.
The only downside was some of the internal dialogue seemed to be a bit much at times. I was tempted to skim forward, but didn't, and I was glad I resisted. The overall effect was rewarding. I am looking forward to starting book three.
I really enjoyed the first three books in this set - a small town in Alaska where shifters live with a non-magical community who believe in 'don't ask, don't tell', and a young woman as the town manager who is sympathetic to the shifters but who mainly tries to change things by introducing more and more rules. Throw in her best mate being a husky shifter, add a bounty hunter and a vampire... and it works well.
Then we get to books four and five and things get too fanciful, the story line literally wanders away all over the place and it just stops being a good read. I did read the last two to complete the arc, but I kept wanting to skip bits simply because they were unbelievable.
I may well read books 1-3 again, they were a good 4* read, but I will stop there as the last two were really just about a 2* hence my 3* rating.
This is a fun series. I really enjoyed the books when I read them when they were released originally.
I really enjoyed the story and the diverse characters. You have many different paranormals living in a very interesting town that is challenging for her to run. The challenges keep coming along with a potential romance. The author balances a lot of elements in this story and it definitely kept my interest.
Hung and Chia definitely have a complicated relationship. They make a powerful team when they have a mutual enemy. There is plenty of action and the story keeps your interest.
I've read Power Shift. I loved all the clever and quirky names of the characters. Chia, the town manager, Hung, the bounty hunter (with a name like that, hot diggity dog!), Sultana the vampiress, D'Ranged, Red Mountainbear, and more! Chia's ghosts are all from different moments in her life. There are shifters, vampires, a whole gamut of PNR characters here. The story is a complex one, where Chia is trying to escape her ghosts. Add in a bad guy who;s trying to take over the town, a steaming hot and hunky bounty hunter, and more twists and turns that a pretzel. I loved it for its quirkiness and the light-hearted yet suspenseful storyline.
Decent but there are plotholes and changing rules, especially apparent if you read the books in order. I think I got to the 3rd book and decided to stop because the opening line directly contradicts something that happened in the first book. The romantic plot is all over the place too. You think something is about to happen, then suddenly 3 years pass and they're enemies. It felt like the first book was more of a trial teaser that was never cleaned up to match the rest of the series. The author's voice is good though, and it's a fairly original take on supernaturals with a good dose of humor and action. Just needs a good editor.
This is a really great series! Plenty of action and adventure with romance in the mix! fast to read. Loved that the whole series is in one place I was able to keep going until the end all without having to look for the next book! So much easier. The characters are really great you'll love some and hate others and the storyline is very well done and flows easily from one book to the next. Well worth the read.
This is a fantastic boxset. If your a lover of the Supernatural and shifters this is definitely a fantastic read,. It pulled me in from start to finish. Theres twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend. Shauna Joesten
These books are such a pleasure to read!!!! Each one is better than the last one. There are cliffhangers but each book that get answered in the next book. Ms Calinda B just keeps getting better.
This is an original and action-packed series, centered around Chia Petit, who, after her grandparents are found dead finds herself coming into much more than just her new position as the town manager. Shifters, Fae, Unseelie, Vampires and lots of magic combine to make this a highly entertaining shifter mystery. Highly recommend!
I had a real ball reading the first three books in the Charming Shifter Mysteries boxset, and I'm sure anyone else will too. Based on those alone I am comfortable saying that of you've not purchased them yet then you are in for a treat. I can pretty much guarantee that they're addictive enough that you won't want to stop, in which case this boxset - which even saves a bit in the overall price - is a nice bargain.
Here are my reviews of the individual books:
Storm Shift
Storm Shift is a fun story, and the first book of what I'm expecting will be a fantastic series. Chia Petit, the heroine of this tale, is just the kind of kick-a** female I totally adore. Newly elected as town manager of Charming, Alaska (which town has a large number of shifters in it, among with a vampire), this story finds her teaming up with a shifter bounty hunter named Hung as they try to find out who or what us killing shifters (possibly even China's own grandparents). Action, adventure, thrills, twists and turn all ensue, and even the potential for romance as the chemistry between Chi and Hung is ridiculously hot. Add together great writing with string characters and a fascinating new author-created world for them to inhabit, and it's no surprise that the result is a clear winner of a novel, and one which I highly recommend.
Power Shift
I started this series off with its prequel, Power Shift, which introduces Charming, Alaska, and it's fantastic mayor Chia Petit. That was a great book and everything gets even better in Power Shift, the official book 1 of the series. Astoundingly to me, The Charming Shifter Mysteries is already on the way to becoming a favorite series, the kind you just feel compelled to devour each book of upon publication. Chia is the epitome of the sort of kick-a** heroine I adore and she's so much more, a fully rounded character with real, significant, responsibilities that she willingly takes on. Her gang, from her vampire roommate and her Husky dog shape shifter best friend, to her shape shifter bounty hunter partner (for now), and growing romantic interest, are superbly drawn. The other supporting characters, friend and for, are also very well done. The plot, with everything put into it to solve the mystery and protect Chia's town and it's shifters, is a thrilling mix of adventure and mystery that just works perfectly. Add in a wonderfully crafted world for everything to move in, and great writing. The result is a real joy to read and one I highly recommend.
Blood Shift
Chia is getting to be one of my favorite fictional characters and her torn of Charming, Alaska, is the ideal setting for these kind of stories. I love following Chia and Hung's story with all its ups and downs, despite Chia's addictive need to exchange blood with her vamp roomie, her still not fully understanding the true magical power of that blood, deadly shades and scary evil politicians, this couple take on all comers and do what's needed in a totally exciting and enjoyable manner. This is yet another great contribution to a great series.
