Calm, Cool, and Connected: 5 Digital Habits for a More Balanced Life was a fantastic read. I really needed to read this book at this time in my life. It breaks down the word HABIT into five easy ways to balance your use of digital devices.

H = Hold Down the Off Button
A = Always Put People First
B = Brush daily: Live with a Clean Conscience
I = I Will Go Online with Purpose
T = Take a Hike

Read the book to get the full context of H.A.B.I.T. It is a very practical and useful list of ways to balance your digital life. ;)

Even though it was a short read (160 pages), I found several helpful tips (some I've already started using!) and definitely recommend the book. It is a must read.

This book helped me realize where I am overusing my phone and how that affects me the relationships around me.

I also got to meet the author at a conference, and she was so sweet and down to earth! She was happy to talk, and give simple practical advice.

Why I Choose this Book:

This author. I've read another book by her and it was totally spot-on. Plus, I'm always looking at ways to be more balanced in life - particularly when it comes to technology. I've been working on it an extra amount during the last few months, so reading this book was quite timely.

What I Thought about this Book:

Y'all. You should read it. Really. It's so easy to read - like to the point that when I went to write this review I was like "I think it was maybe 70ish pages." And was quite surprised to see that it was actually 160 pages long, because I flew through it, enjoying and learning from each page.

We live in an era where there's so much we can learn and do because of technology...but at the same time we can lose so much if we don't put technology in the correct place. Just because we have the access to something doesn't mean it's a good thing. And just because something is good doesn't mean it's the best thing.

I'd been working on learning this concept and putting technology in the right place in my life even before I got this book for review. Reading Cool, Calm, and Connected totally inforced what I'd been thinking, as well as giving me practical advice as to how to better apply it in my life. The advice that stuck out most to me was how to be intentional. The author said that when you go to pick up your phone or click on the internet on your computer, think through what you're going to do

The advice that stuck out most to me was how to be intentional. The author said that when you go to pick up your phone or click on the internet on your computer, think through what you're going to do on it so you don't end up mindlessly spending your time. For instance, when I get on my phone now, I stop and think "What am I doing?" And then I answer that question before proceeding. The answer might be "Texting so-and-so" or "Posting on Twitter" or "Reading on my Kindle" or "Making a memo for myself" or even "Chilling for five minutes on Facebook." And then I make it a point to do what I got on my phone to do, and then putting it back away. It makes a big difference. (Same thing applies to the internet on my computer.)

One of the best parts about this book is it doesn't condemn you for poor choices in your past, instead, it empowers you to make the correct choices in your future. Reading this book was encouraging. It was inspiring. And it made me want to buy a bunch of copies and hand them out to basically everyone I know. It's also really practical and simple. And y'all should read it.

Conclusion:

I can't think of anyone I wouldn't recommend this book to. I mean, obviously not a three-year-old, but you get my point. There were a few small mentions of different addictions that the internet helps make easily accessible, so parents might want to skim those parts before handing this book to kids, but if I remember correctly then it didn't go into any details.

Rating:

I’m giving Cool, Calm, and Connected 5 out of 5 stars, and 10 out of 10

Calm, Cool, and Connected: 5 Digital Habits for a More Balanced Life by Arlene Pellicane

I was given this book by Moody Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

This book helps the reader realize how much they rely on screens to fill our lives. Using the word HABIT as the guide it led me to realize how much I use electronic screens and what I can do to change this habit.

H~Hold Down the Off Button

A~Always Put People First

B~Brush Daily: Live with a Clean Conscience

I~I Will Go Online with Purpose

T~Take a Hike

Will I take the advice given? I will try as best as I can. One downfall is I usually read books on my Kindle. With arthritis hard copies are generally to difficult to hold. As this is using my electronic screen with a purpose, I believe that this is all right.

I found this book to be informative and filled with many feasible suggestions.

I recommend this book to anyone who feels they may be spending too much time in front of an electronic screen.

A brief little guide to remember the important things in life. Really more of a glorified magazine article, and a little Christiany for my tastes--but in the way that the Five Love Languages (who did the introduction and has worked with the author) is still brimming with good ideas.

These are all suggestions I've had before, but the "HABIT" acronym simplifies it and helps put some extremely simply steps in palce.

This was a pretty good little book. Nothing earth shattering but lots of really great reminders and new ways to think about how you use technology and how it’s effecting your life and relationships. She’s not advocating for getting rid of technology or social media but for being intentional in the way you use it. It was short and incredible easy to read. I’d definitely recommend it.

Just a so-so book of common sense reasons to cut down on your screen time. Heres the book in a nutshell: don't spend so much time on your phone, tablet, computer or TV. Be more social, engage people and get outdoor exercise.

I knew I really needed to read this book and that the author would have plenty of things to say that I needed to hear. I was right. When I received the book I thought it was such a small book. But I don't think anything was left out. For a book about forming habits for a more balanced life, it was well balanced in information, in approach, in connecting thoughts, etc. It was a well balanced book and I not only gained wisdom from it but I enjoyed it!

Have you ever wanted to feel more calm and less frazzled? Have you lost it with your husband, kids or yourself? Do you feel disconnected with others around you even though you are "connected" on social media? Well, Arlene Pellicane has written a new book that addresses all of these issues and more in Calm, Cool and Connected: 5 Digital Habits for a More Balanced Life. We are only in this world for a little while, but it's important to use our time wisely. We all desire more connection, less chaos and taking things in slow motion and enjoying life!

Arlene shares five habits that will help to create calm, cool and connectedness in your life. She starts off her book with a quiz to see how your digital habits are affecting your life. I was surprised to find out I was not very calm, cool or connected! But I was very encouraged to read about the five habits.

First, Hold down the off button. Arlene shares many statistics about our 24/7 society that never shuts down. That is not healthy or holy! We need times of rest from the digital world, often. Second, Always put people first. Yes, this habit is very abused. We have more interest and pressing matters on our phone that pull our attention away from what is most important. She shares a special technique called The Pivot to help in this area. Third, Brush daily; live with a clean conscience. Be accountable to yourself with your time, purchases and interactions. Do they line up with God's Word and for your life? Fourth, I will go online with purpose. Ask the question, What am I here to do? That will help in giving you focus and efficiency. And last, Take a hike! Get outside and away from the digital world. Above all, be healthy in your digital and non-digital life and you will create a good HABIT.

This book is a short read packed full of information, easy ideas to implement and plenty of good humor and is a great resource for adults to learn how to create those digital boundaries to live a happy and full life. Each chapter begins with a Bible verse and with many more through the chapter that relate to the topic and ends with a prayer about that habit.

If you are concerned or curious about how to make good habits for your digital life, then be sure to check out this book: Calm, Cool and Connected by Arlene Pellicane.

My Review of Calm, Cool, and Connected

Connecting To A More Peaceful Life

I found that changing my habits really does change my life. In Calm, Cool, and Connected, Arlene Pellicane has written a very helpful book about developing deeper relationships with God, our families, and others. By connecting personally, and using our electronic devices in a more moderate way, we can experience a more peaceful and balanced life.
Inside this book are many practical tips and useful ideas for using electronic devices more mindfully. The advice given has helped me to be intentional when browsing the internet, apps and social media. Arlene gives scripture verses to help us understand the importance of choosing what really matters. I have become more aware of what is going on around me. I'm okay with not constantly checking my phone.
My relationships are improving because of spending more face to face time, and as I'm personally interacting with those around me. I am able to focus on important matters with less distraction. I'm noticing my stress level to be less, as well as having more energy and productivity.
Putting the tips and practical applications into practice is not difficult. Arlene presents an easy 5-step plan to incorporate into my daily routine. These five habits have given me a calmer sense of being, as I have felt more focused and attentive.
I wholeheartedly recommend Calm, Cool, and Connected. It is a short book and an easy read with a wealth of information. Everyone needs to read Calm, Cool, and Connected. It will make a difference.

Calm, Cool and Connected is a short book that aims to encourage readers to rethink and reform their social media habits so that we’re not distracted by technology to the point we’re living only half a life.

The book is structured around five habits:
H = Hold down the off button
A = Always put people first
B = Brush daily (i.e. post no evil about yourself or others)
I = I will go online with purpose (no more disappearing down internet rabbit holes for hours on end)
T = Take a hike (don’t spend your entire live online—get some exercise)

Overall, the book encourages us to develop good technology habits. It’s not saying we have to go cold turkey, but encouraging us to be more intentional with the way we use technology, to use it as a tool, to put in-person connections first.

While the tips are specifically around controlling the way we use technology (rather than letting technology control us), many of the principles hold true for any kind of habit:

"Try not to focus on the negative habit you’re trying to shake. Instead focus on the positive habit you’re trying to embrace."

She also doesn’t recommend overreacting and going cold turkey in trying to rein in our social media use. Apparently, that’s not a good idea. This book is full of tips that will help you develop more healthy technology habits. The book could also be used as a small group study, as there are plenty of questions and other discussion points.

Recommended for anyone concerned about their digital use or who wants to develop better internet and social media habits. It would also make a good gift for social media-addicted family members … if you could get them off their devices long enough to read it. Perhaps the publisher should consider a Minecraft or Fortnite edition.

A trend of sorts emerging in the Christian publishing world are books on Netiquette. I’ve already reviewed one that was supposedly about the dangers of taking too many selfies, but somehow managed to turn itself into a hysterical attack on homosexuals. Well, there’s a new kid on the block, and this time the danger is more omnipresent. Yes, the Internet. But, also, social media. Television. These items are on the “tune out” list of Calm, Cool and Connected, an actually pretty reasonable book and one that isn’t very offensive at all.

The deal with this self-help tome is that we’re spending way too much time multi-tasking and checking e-mails, so the author has devised an acrostic out of the word “habit” for guidance on curbing our tendencies to sit in front of various screens. The book also offers up daily prayers, although the bulk of the book — which does have its share of Biblical quotations, which must have been a tough feat to pull off putting together given that the Internet wasn’t around when it was written— is actually pretty science-focused, pulling its information from stats and research. (Shocking for a Christian book? Yes, I know.)

There’s a quiz at Calm, Cool and Connected’s start that will gauge how much you actually need the book. Without lying, I can say that my answers meant that I wound up in “danger zone” territory. Yes, having the cellphone beside your bed (a habit that I practice and that will be hard to break) means that I have a tendency to be too connected to the online world. So this book was probably meant for the likes of me, notwithstanding the feminine cover art.

I had the pleasure of meeting Arlene Pellicane in person at She Speaks 2017. When she said her new book was coming out this fall, I jumped at the chance to review it. I have heard her speak several times on Focus on the Family, and I enjoy her practical approach.

This book is for anyone who feels like their phone has become a dominating, overwhelming force. I am not much of a phone person, but I live with several people who are. I enjoyed the practical offerings and non-judgmental tone of this book. It will help me encourage healthier habits for those I love.

Calm, Cool, and Connected is a short read, perfect for busy people. It begins with a self-evaluation quiz to understand how much space your phone takes up in your time. Then, it offers five key areas for balance:

Hold Down the Off Button
Always Put People First
Brush Daily: Live With a Clean Conscience
I Will Go Online with Purpose
Take a Hike

I enjoyed her creative analogy of a digital pacifier. It was new to me, and it’s a perfect description of what smartphones are to many people (including my children). I can help them break that habit, just like I helped them break the habit of sucking their thumbs when they were little.

She offers suggestions for practicing wisdom in online shopping and powerful methods for increasing productivity. I especially enjoyed her productivity tips, and I’m using them this week to better effect.

If you or a loved one struggles with too much involvement on digital devices, this book offers gently corrective prescriptions.

I am grateful to Moody Publishers for providing a free review copy of this book.

Calm, Cool, and Connected is a very practical book designed to help the reader become more aware of their digital device habits and learn how to develop discipline in this area of his/her life. Many people spend much more time on their phones than necessary, sometimes to the detriment of their work, spouse, family, or friends. This book provides a short quiz to help readers assess one’s digital habits and then offers five specific habits to implement in their lives to ensure that their devices do not master them and help them to make sure they use them purposefully rather than out of habit.
Through reading this book I learned weak areas in my own life concerning my smart phone use. I have already implemented some of the suggestions and have noticed improvement in my behavior with digital devices. I was concerned that I was spending more time than was wise on my phone, especially as I don’t want my kids to think I care more about my phone and the online world than them.
If you have ever felt guilty about how much time you spend on your phone, think you might be ignoring the people around you in favor of social media, have had someone comment on your excessive device use, or wonder where all of your free time goes and suspect a lot is wasted on mindlessly surfing on your phone, this is a book you should read. Mastering your device and changing your habits is possible with a little guidance and direction. This is a quick read that will get you started toward a healthier relationship with your phone almost immediately!

Arlene Pellicane provides both an insightful and practical look at the ways in which our digital habits impact our lives and relationships with others. She cautions us to remember why it is important to manage this aspect of our lives not just manage it for our children (If you want another good read, check out Growing Up Social too which focuses more on this aspect for kids). The book is written in a clear and succinct format that enables you remember it clearly so that you can focus on applying it to your lives and that of your family. I particularly loved that it was presented in a fashion of the acronym “HABIT,” which makes it SO much easier to remember. Now to focus on implementing these 5 practical strategies! I would definitely recommend this!

When I received the invitation to review Calm, Cool, and Connected by Arlene Pellicane, this was the opening paragraph of the invitation.

Do you ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through social media, sometimes late into the night? Or maybe you’re prone to answer “just one more text,” even though your child is desperately waiting to speak with you. Perhaps your phone is the first thing you reach for in the morning, a Netflix binge is on your nightly agenda, and you’ve caught yourself texting at red lights. Has technology taken over your life?

I read that and knew immediately that I needed to read this book!

Calm, Cool, and Connected is a short, quick, and easy to read book. It is structured around the acronym HABIT.

H – Hold Down the Off Button

A – Always Put People First

B – Brush Daily: Live with a Clean Conscience

I – I Will Go Online with Purpose

Calm, Cool, and Connected

5 Digital Habits for a More Balanced Life

by Arlene Pellicane

Moody Publishers

Christian

Pub Date 01 Sep 2017

I am reviewing a copy of Calm, Cool and Connected through Moody Publishers and Netgalley:

In 2011 only a third of Americans owned a smart phone.

Most of us are on our phones or computers far more than we should be, and more than what is beneficial to us.

This book goes on to talk about the fear some of us have of being without our phones. (Nomophobia). We are reminded of the importance of taking time away from our screens.

We are reminded of the issues of cyber bullying and the importance of being mindful of what we post, and the dangers of Pornography are also brought up.

This book encourages us to be mindful of the time we spend online and to have an idea of what we are doing, we are encouraged to declutter our screen time and grow closer to Jesus.

I give Calm, Cool and Connected five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

This is such a wonderful book for teaching us how to connect to God as well as those around us.

If you're like me, you'll find it's harder and harder to disconnect from your phone, tablet, and social medias. It has almost become an obsession in this day in age. Arlene teaches us five principals for getting free from the electronic life and into our real life in a calm way.

This was an enjoyable book to read with eye-opening information. I was so amazed at how disconnected so many of us have become with our real life and the real people around us because of our phones. It made me really take a hard look at how much time I spend focused on my phone and not my family.

By implimenting these ideas into my life, I've found I'm a lot more calm and available to my friends and family. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is finding themselves drawn into social media more than their own life.

This is a timely book and easy to read. I have read others on this topic and really like this one. The plan given by the author using the letters of the word HABIT will be helpful to anyone who needs to put down their phone and connect with the people in their life. Our phones/technology are overtaking our lives, and this would be a beneficial read for anyone. Everyone can learn something from it I feel.

I appreciated that the author wasn't "preachy;" she just shared her ideas and tips that are helpful and very "do-able." There are facts/statistics included throughout the book which I find interesting as well. I am working to follow these tips in my own life relating to technology.

I was sent a copy of this book from Moody Publishers for my honest review. Thank you.

A must read book for all of us who are living in an internet generation nowadays. A phone is just not a phone anymore, it has became an idol for us. I never think it was a problem until I read this book. I realized I get too depended on the internet until I cannot live without it. As Arlene stated "the smarter the phone, the dumber the user."

Calm, cool, connected shows how to get connected again with the real world in 5 practical ways. It reminds me that the person in front of me is much more important than my phone. I start to apply the new habit into my life, I try not to open my phone unless I really need it.
Totally recommend this book!

Calm, Cool, and Connected is a must read for anyone who has felt that they spend too much time on their phone but don't really know how to change their habits. It is an easy and quick read but powerful. Arlene Pellicane presents 5 habits that will help one put technology in its proper place rather than avoid it all together. Technology is a part of our daily lives, and Arlene just helps you to think proactively about how you are using it. This book helps you to take an honest look at how much you are using your phone and other devices. "People first, phones second" is one of my favorite quotes from the book.

Calm, Cool, and Connected is telling us what we all need to hear these days. So many of us need to work on the time we spend in front of our screens. I started changing my habits as soon as I got into this book! This is such an easy read and it gives you practical ways to get more quality out of your life instead of your phone/computer! Arlene breaks it down and really speaks the truth about what so many of us struggle with in this day and age. In today's age, our phones are an extension of ourselves whether we realize it or not! And for some, the topic on the overuse of technology can be a bit of a sore spot. Arlene's writing style is fresh and inviting and she brings up valid points using the breakdown of the word "Habit" to bring us back down to earth when it comes to the use of our "digital pacifier." So, don't be afraid of charging your phone in the other room, and remember it is truly well with your phone (if you let it) I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review

There are 5 habits in this book to help you set your phone down and look up. These habits are set up like a daily devotional, only I spent a full week working on each one, making sure that I had each one mastered before moving on to the next one.
Spending this time setting my phone aside, picking up my kids and having fun with my family was something I didn’t know I was missing. What is even more, I didn’t know how much my kids were doing the same thing. This was the best part of making these changes in me, I could make the changes in them as well!

While technology is developing at rapid speeds, there are some disadvantages to it. In Calm, Cool and Connected, Arlene Pellicane examines how to give technology its proper place in our lives. She gives five digital habits for a more balanced life and how to take control of our cell phones and tablets instead of letting them control us. And let's face it, everyone can probably use a little more balance. It is all about moderation and being intentional with our technology. I definitely recommend reading this book. It is a fairly quick read that is easy to finish.

At Set Your Feet my friend Kristi Stephens mentioned she had just read this book and found parts of it helpful to think about, so I added it to my Audible queue. I noticed that it was going out of the "free" part of Audible as of tomorrow, so I thought I could listen to it quickly - on 2x speed - and ... As she mentioned, it was fine. I wouldn't say that it's earth-shattering. I like her "pivot" technique, but other than that most of it was unsurprising.

Not a "must-listen" but not a waste of time, either.
