In book one of The Virgin Auctions, Nova Summers has sold her virginity of the web to the highest bidder. Her buyer, happens to be someone she has seen in the press, the premiere international jeweler, Travis Star - a billionaire in his own right. After a very shaky start where the plane almost never leaves the ground with her on it, Nova manages to make it to Manhattan to be kept by Travis for two weeks for his pleasure in return for the financial gain she receives. To Nova this is everything as her home life is ruled by an abusive, violent and erratic father who has terrorized her, her mother and her younger brother. Travis' money will ensure she can get them all out of there and start a new life.
Travis is someone who does not have relationships or date in any manner. Instead, he relies on the virgin auctions several times a year to 'take care of his needs'. He is enigmatic, closed off, hard to read and almost untouchable half the time. However since this isn't Travis' autobiography, obviously business does not go as usual with these two. Lines get blurred, boundaries crossed and two people who are feeling a helluva lot more for one another than either bargained for. Will Nova ever get Travis to reveal himself and let loose or will he stay in his holding pattern? And what will occur with Nova having fled the nest sending her father into a fit of rage? Those are the central points of the story.
All in all it was a good read but it lacked something for me. And I don't know whether that was just me or the fact that I'm such a weirdo that Travis with his diamonds and "suave ways" kept bringing up a cross between a gorgeous man and Liberace to mind. I think this was largely me -- I would be amazed to find another Goodreads review where someone admitted Liberace haunted them throughout the book so I must warn one to take the last part of my review with a grain of salt......
