Time Will Tale

When Quantum Physicist Nathan Hawke broke the laws of time, the last thing he expected was for Time to take it personally.

An epic adventure across time itself in a tale of love, mystery, intrigue, drama and suspense as one man challenges the ages only to find that the concept of Time is far more than what it seems.

The year is 2033. Once considered a leading mind in Quantum Theory, Dr. Nathan Hawke finds himself exiled in disgrace from the scientific community and higher academia. Relegated to teaching a high school physics class and spending his nights binge watching 80s t.v shows with his cat, he is approached by a mysterious donor offering to fully fund his research into a unique time travel theory involving the appearances of ghosts. While leery of his new benefactors and their motives, Nathan accepts their gesture. Fearing it may be his last and only chance to prove his theory true and conquer the physics of time. Upon his first successful test, things do not go entirely as planned and Nathan finds himself trapped in 1862 on a small farm in Georgia during the Civil War. Forced to wait 3 years for the timesplice to reopen, he soon adapts to his new life in the 1800s. Falling in love with the woman he once knew only as a ghost and becoming part of the family. Eventually deciding to live out his life there in the past where he has found a happiness that the future, with all its bells and whistles, could not offer.
Only he soon discovers staying out of history’s way is harder than he imagined and after inadvertently altering the timeline, his perfect new life is left in shambles. As tragedy continues to strike, Nathan is forced to abandon his new world and barely escapes through the splice when it reopens, but with no way to control when or where each new splice takes him, he finds himself bouncing around through time from one era to another, one adventure to another, and one dilemma to another. Jumping from time to time in a desperate attempt to find the splice that took him to that first day in 1862, reset the timeline, fix his mistakes, and save the woman he loves.
Meanwhile, back in the future, old colleagues have stolen his work and plan to use it for their own nefarious purposes. Leading to a cat-and-mouse chase through the annals of time as his journey home is further complicated by their interference and trying to repair the damage they have caused to history. Nathan is also plagued along the way by the appearance of a doppelganger of himself that shows up to give him vague warnings and advice, and only he can see or hear. Leaving Nathan to wonder who or what he is. Transmissions sent from a future self? Insanity being a side effect of time travel? Or something entirely different? To make matters worse, Nathan is wanted by the FBI in his own time for crimes he is accused of committing in the distant past. It is during his epic journey across the temporal plains that Nathan will learn there is far more to the existence of Time than he ever imagined…

First in a thrilling and adventure-filled series.

The idea of time being sentient had never occurred to Nathan. All he had wanted to do was conquer it and bend it to his whim. He had been an expert in this field, highly qualified, respected, he had even been on the cover of Time, twice. Then came a fateful day where it all went wrong, a little too much to drink and his actions saw him blacklisted from all jobs in the field, a permanent blemish upon his career, he would be lucky to get a job cleaning a college's toilets, let alone be allowed to lecture in one. But he did manage to get one teaching in a high school and he kept it, for a while. Then, one day, a mysterious benefactor arrived, promising Nathan his dream, funding, resources, all with no strings attached. All he had to  do was work towards his dream. This mysterious figure claimed to want nothing in return but for this success, but his success alone is reason enough. Follow a gripping journey through time in S.C Barrett's Time Will Tale.

I really enjoyed the theory on ghosts, one of the principal guiding points on Nathan's journey, the theory is not only intelligent but sounds credible. As a protagonist I thought Nathan was an interesting character, it was certainly fun to follow him, flaws and all. The book is a plethora of action, romance, adventure, intrigue, and discovery all combined with a healthy serving of humour. When I first started reading Time Will Tale, I was put in mind of Quantum Leap, the thought of his actions seeing the Lincoln assassination becoming impossible, and the need to repair the future put me in mind of the Kennedy episode, as did the thought of him leaping through time trying to fix his mistakes. S.C Barrett's 's Time will Tale is engrossing, with a plot that is easy to become invested in.

Nathan’s entire life he had dreamt of the possibility of time travel. For him, though, this was not some idle fantasy. Considered one of the top five scientific minds in the world, Nathan had the capability to make this happen, but not the resources. In Time Will Tale by, Nathan had been ostracised by the scientific community, after a drunken misadventure caught on video and was now working as a humble physics teacher in a local High School. When he is offered unlimited money and time, by an unknown benefactor to produce his dreamt of time machine, he is wary but ecstatic to finally have the opportunity to see his lifelong dream fulfilled. Thus begins a fascinating, at times harrowing journey through time to the period of the American Civil War.

Time Will Tale by, is a classic time travel story full of the usual conundrums and paradoxes that make time travel so fascinating for authors and readers alike. Nathan, the principal character is beautifully drawn by the author Barrett. Despite having a “beautiful mind”, Nathan has all the flaws, uncertainties and self-doubt of us mere mortals, which I found immensely reassuring. The story is clearly the first in a series based around the adventures of Nathan and as such sets a wonderful platform for what is undoubtedly yet to come. This is a fast-paced, exciting adventure through a very popular genre, yet it is softened and rounded by Nathan’s self-discovery in the past as he comes to grips with his unusual childhood as a child prodigy and for the first time in his life begins to understand the meaning of family and love. This is a very good debut novel by Barrett and I am keen to see what the rest of the series has to offer.

Fascinating premise: Time travel and the effects one small change can have on our version of history. As Dr. Nathan Hawke bounces through time trying to return to his own time, he has to fix the mistakes made by him in the time he lands in. Meanwhile back in his own time history is changing and the consequences of those changes ripple across the centuries.

This was a fun read. I enjoyed seeing the possible outcomes of one small change like not killing a man can have on things. It was fascinating to see these changes through the eyes of the well developed characters as the plot thickened and twisted through time.

I am excited to see the next book in the series and see how Nathan recovers from his adventures through time.

Time travel

Very good story with a “no way” ending. Author reflects consequences when are curiosity is not always a positive means as history alters it’s a natural course of action. This is a series and anxiously wait for a sequel.
