Rachel is a writer of words, drawer of pictures and champion of silver linings. She exhibits widely, writes tirelessly and frequently creates slightly unhinged characters.
Her written work includes children’s stories and poems, clever advertising copy and lots of other stuff besides. Her illustrative work is a smorgasboard of giant, hand-printed poems, mind-bogglingly detailed gouache illustrations and a cacophony of quirky prints and etchings.
She explores the lovliness of words and the magic of pictures, revelling in a world of jam-eating miniature bears and other made-up animals.
Her work aims to capture a free way of thinking - one which makes you feel anything is possible, a feeling all too easily lost with the end of childhood. When we’re all grown-up, sometimes we just need a little nudge to remember it’s been there all along.
*Rachel has also been an air hostess, a garden designer and a lifeguard. She often runs a really long way and was once invited to the selection of the British ultra running team. She also once won a date with Man of the millennium and has been trying to live it down ever since.
This is such a great read! An inspiring book which could most certainly inspire so many children to face their fears and 'find their roar'. A little mouse is tired of being looked down upon and not being seen as tough enough, so wants to learn how to ROAR to be as big and scary as the lion. He seeks the help of the lion, and this brings an unexpected result. The rhyming pattern brings a lovely flow to the book that makes you not want to put down, and would make it a great book to read out loud to a class. Would recommend it to read to all children, especially those not feeling confident in themselves.
I miš i lav i skupa zajedno, preslatki!
Prachtige niet-te-kinderlijke illustraties. Geweldig verhaal met een mooie boodschap. Erg leuk!!
As someone who is currently very small, I really resonated with the mouse in this story. One of my favourite things to do is roar at people so I really understood why he was trying to find his own roar. Some valuable lessons were learnt, and I now know that I do not need to be loud to be heard. Though I am yet to put this into practice.
Recommend to anyone who likes animals, roaring, and the colour yellow.
The illustrations are much more appealing than the thumbnail of the cover implies. The rhyme and theme are easy & fun. Nothing subtle or really original about the book, though.
Not sure how I feel about the message that we need to *change* ourselves, as I firmly believe that the motto 'be true to yourself' takes precedence. But the intent was actually to advise us to improve ourselves by taking chances, learning new things, developing our talents further... so, I recommend that you discuss that bit with your child. After all, mouse and lion become friends without trying to change each other, or change themselves for the other.
That was absolutely adorable. Some might think the lesson obvious or the book slightly didactic. But I thought it wonderful. Perfect rhyming. Wonderful pictures. Cute details to be seen in lap-read and read-alone. Preschool should enjoy it. Younger school-age, too.
2/15/17 Used in F preschool theme (for friends). They liked the pictures. Liked the story. Liked to see the lion scared. The rhyming made the reading flow. Worked well.
3/21/18 Used in I theme. Very good.
3/24/18 I read it to SS while it was just us reading a book pile. Not sure if Hubby read it to SD.
I love Rachel Bright’s stories and this is another firm favourite. The Lion Inside is the perfect book for any young child who is lacking a little bit of confidence and needs help finding their roar. As little mouse learns, we all have a little bit of mouse and a little bit of lion inside of us.
Mouse lives a hard life and is tired of being ignored and sat on by the other jungle animals. Lion on the other hand is the king of the jungle who is respected by all the animals and usually finds himself as the centre of attention. Fed up of living in lion’s shadow and being beneath lion both metaphorically and literally (mouse lives in a space below the rock where lion sleeps) mouse sets out to change his ways and comes up with an idea that he thinks is the perfect solution to his problem. But when mouse ventures off to see lion he is in for one very big surprise…
Mouse is desperate to be like lion but finds out that he doesn’t need to be like lion at all, he just needs to find his own voice and have self-belief. There are delightful messages on finding courage, being brave, taking risks (mouse faces the prospect of being lion’s dinner) and chasing your dreams. And also that friendship comes in the most unlikeliest forms.
The story is told in delightful rhyming prose and as expected, the artwork by Jim Field is delightful and full of warmth and charm.
A lovely story with a wonderful moral…find the confidence within yourself. Even those lacking confidence can find the self-belief hidden deep within them. You don’t need to be the size of a lion, you just need to have the heart of one.
I was very much looking forward to giving ‘The Lion Inside’ to my son, having enjoyed ‘The Koala Who Could’. However, I actually returned the book because I didn’t like some of the English used within it. It may be that I’m a pedant but words like ‘tinyful’, ‘littlest’, ‘weeniest’ are, in my opinion, poor language choices. The concept behind the story is nice, but I wouldn’t purposefully expose my young son to the language choices in this book.
This is a BIG picture book with fun, bold illustrations. I love how the lion looks when he is roaring across two pages and the way he looks when the mouse confronts him. I love the mouse's oversized ears. The pacing of the story and the dialogue would make this super fun to read out loud and the message about being bold and facing your fears is great too.
A great book - lovely rhymes, funny moments and an important message. The fifth star is for the illustrations!
“He had found his true voice and learned to speak out, and for THAT you don't need to roar or to shout" "... no matter your size, we all have a mouse AND a lion inside"
A lovely picture book all about being you! The little mouse wants to find his roar but he needs some help from his lion friend! This book is all about believing in yourself and having the confidence to be proud of you. A great picture book for PSHE
What a truly magical message behind the story. The picture book finishes with 'Yes, that day they BOTH learned that, no matter your size, We all have a mouse AND a lion inside'. What a motivational picture book. I feel like it covers the theme of bullying in a rather hidden / disguised manor which I really enjoyed. I had such a warm feeling after reading this and how true the message was; that we don't all have to be big and strong like the lion to be heard, we can be small and quiet like the mouse and still be heard. Everyone has different qualities, and different things that make them special and unique. The italics was very cleverly done. All words that were meant to be highlighted were in capital letters which worked along side the picture on the page. Would really recommend for a quick read just before the kids go home after a day at school, and maybe the message is just to be kinder to others or maybe even look out for others.
This is such a lovely little read! Following the story of a little mouse on a journey to find his roar. The beautiful rhyming pattern engages the reader at all times, paired with the beautiful illustrations immediately makes this book so great. The two quotes that stuck out for me were "he had found his true voice and learnt to speak out, and for that you don't need to roar or shout" - this is such a powerful message to children that are shy or the opposite. Explaining that it is okay to speak your mind within reason and encouraging children to open up. Additionally, the final line "we all have a mouse AND a lion inside" is the greatest discovery for children to celebrate that we are all different yet contain similar characteristics in a unique way.
