Opposites attract and sparks fly when a charming former Navy SEAL goes undercover with a beautiful FBI agent on the trail of black-market thieves.
After a mission gone terribly wrong, former Navy SEAL Hale Carter has made a good career for himself at Treasure Hunter Security. He gets to use his engineering skills designing new gadgets, and his SEAL skills providing security for exciting expeditions and treasure hunts. He might still be plagued by nightmares, but all in all, life is good. Then he volunteers for a dangerous undercover mission into the Kalahari Desert, alongside a cool, attractive FBI agent who challenges him at every turn.
Special Agent Elin Alexander is driven to bring down the deadly black-market antiquities ring Silk Road. She’s experienced firsthand how they destroy lives and she’s vowed to end their greed and killing. After months of undercover work, she’s eager for the mission to find the Lost City of the Kalahari. What she wasn’t expecting was six-feet-three inches of former Navy SEAL as her partner. Hale is too handsome, too sexy, and isn’t inclined to follow orders.
As the pair infiltrate the Silk Road hunt, Hale and Elin find themselves fighting a scorching attraction as they work to discover just what the lost city is hiding. But stuck in the bowels of a legendary ancient mine, Hale and Elin must put their trust in each other, to not only save the day, but to get out alive.
I’m a USA Today bestselling romance author who’s passionate about fast-paced, emotion-filled romantic suspense and science-fiction romance. I love writing about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals. I like to believe it’s possible for all of us to do the same.
I love hearing from readers and you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and my website: www.annahackett.com
Though Untraveled is book five in the Treasure Hunter Security series, it is the first book I read in this series. It can be read as a standalone but I will definitely try to read all the previous books. In this story, former Navy Seal Hale Carter gets teamed up with FBI Special Agent Elin Alexander. They are both capable and strong characters and can hold their own. Hale is assigned to back up Elin who has infiltrated a Silk Road cell. Their quest to find King Solomon’s treasure takes them to South Africa, Botswana, and the Kalahari Desert. I really enjoyed reading about all the exotic locations of their journey and the history and legend of King Solomon’s seal. Untraveled is a fast-paced action adventure novel with a heavy dose of mystery, humor and sizzling romance. Highly recommended if you like Indiana Jones style adventures.
Untraveled by Anna Hackett is Book 5 in the Treasure Hunter Security series, and while I still stand by the opinion that this is Hackett's strongest series (as of yet), I was less than impressed by this entry, sadly.
It's the shortest of the bunch I'd say, or at least it felt that way. There was no time to really set up the plot, but more importantly in a romance-forward book, there was barely any time to set up a believable romance and love story. Anna Hackett is no stranger to instalust and instalove, sure, sometimes it's the nature of her stories, but when there's chemistry and fun along with it, it can work for me. But this was altogether too short, and the story suffered because of it.
The characters weren't bad - this book focuses on former Navy SEAL Hale Carter as the MMC, with Special Agent Elin Alexander as the FMC, both teamed up and undercover, on the hunt for the dangerous Silk Road organization. I wish we had more time to flesh the characters out, because their dynamic and backstories were pretty interesting. And the found family/team bonding elements that Hackett does so well in this series were lessened too, which also affected the overall story.
However, we ended up with an intriguing set-up for the next story, so catch me over there!
Another tussle with Silk Road for those who work for Treasure Hunter Security and happily this time there's something a little different happening. Our main protagonists are not as usual targeted by the thieving Silk Road mercenaries but actually have infiltrated one of their operations! Oh I'm so pleased that it's not the usual formula as much as I enjoy the adventures, the stunning locations and of course the romance I really thought it high time it got mixed up a bit. I know I'm not alone in this thought so it was with great anticipation that I read this book. Ok so this time it's former Seal Hale Carter in the firing line and he's a character with a painful background. Yet when paired with Special Agent Elin Alexander he has his work cut out ignoring her obvious charms. Elin is every bit as dangerous and focused as Hale but keeping their cover whilst following a mad man into the Kalahari desert is about to test them both to the limit! I do love the way history and amazing legends feature heavily in this series. It's always a joy to read of places and civilisations that have frequently captured my imagination and this story is no different . If honest I'd have preferred perhaps more background about the villain as his motives were unfortunately unclear given his position. I did like that the couple were both pretty tough as it made their relationship seem more balanced. Yet honestly when they got frisky I was thinking no, not now because hey you're not out of the woods ( or mine in this case !) yet. Still overall I did enjoy this story as it changed the dynamics somewhat and referred back to some unknown shadow organisation who might or might not be on the side of the good guys. As I've mentioned I like the overall ideas, the location, the never say die characters and the way the author throws them into tight spots letting them ingeniously save themselves. This was another fun read with humour and lots of action but I think I'm like everyone else and the one romance I really want to read is about Darcy and Agent Arrogant and Annoying but it doesn't look like it's coming soon as we do get a little peek at just who might be up next. This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
This one kind of pissed me off, honestly. Not the primary plot or the main characters, but what I suspect is a different series creeping in - that drone, basically.
Firstly, if you have a series about a bunch of badasses, it kind of undercuts them to have this group you treat as even bigger badasses coming in and acting like they are in charge ... and everyone just kind of bends over for them. That's been a problem in previous books.
In this book, it became an even bigger problem because these supposed badasses fucking suck at their jobs. They nearly killed the lead characters in this book MULTIPLE TIMES ... and it was like they were directly targeting the lead characters, since their drone specifically targeted them out of the entire group of baddies they were undercover with. WTF? Also, their cover was blown - the bad guys were hunting them - and these fucking morons are still attacking them as if they are the real bad guys. Hey super secret squad of morons? Get better at your job. If even the bad guys know these two were spies, and are hunting them across the desert, but you with your super tech that somehow follows them everywhere and knows everything they are doing ... you somehow DON'T know they are good guys, and therefore are so inept that you should be shot with your own tech.
It made me angry, and then the dickhead FBI guy who is all "trust me, you don't want any part of those guys" as if they are badass and awesome when they are really clearly idiots with good toys that need to be taken away from them ... that just made it all worse. I'm not going to read the series about entitled, elitist morons tyvm. And I would like if they stopped crapping all over this series too.
I swear, Anna Hackett has been on a roll these past few months. Novella after novella, world after dizzying world that takes a while (a huge mental shift is needed!) just to get into because they’re so extensive and broad with so much more to discover as each story peels back the layer of that particular world.
By and large, I enjoy many of them—some more than others, as always—but Hackett's Treasure Hunter Security series is probably one of the ones I really like because of its closeness to history, archaeology and well, Indiana Jones. Apart from being a reminder that there is still so much yet to discover on planet Earth, the exotic locations don’t hurt too, and this time, ‘Untraveled’ is another rollicking ride of a treasure hunting security outfit dealing with King Solomon’s treasures and the crooks who tend to follow the money trail.
Hackett pairs Hale and Elin—a former SEAL and a ladies’ man with a take-no-prisoners FBI agent—this time around, and they are a pairing that reminds me so much of Shaw and Claudia from Hell Squad, though they battle human baddies rather than dinosaur-like enemies in the heart of Africa. Both Hale and Elin do have chemistry; they work well together and mostly, I did like the action and the plot, though I wasn't quite able to shake off the instalove feel that made me a little less enthusiastic about the book that it could have been.
That said, ‘Untraveled’ is a fun, quick read and as always, Hackett provides pure escapist adventures that I can’t say no to. There’s always a hint and and a setup for the next book, so like an addict wanting a fix, that’s me standing in line already.
Untraveled is the fifth book in the Treasure Hunter Security series and what a series it is.
Action, suspense, mystery, danger and romance are just some of what to expect when diving into one of Anna's books. The treasure hunters are called upon when protection is needed and ancient artifacts are sort after but they go into alpha mode when trying to protect.
But let's not forget the sexy, alpha men and women who protect and find their someone else even though they are players beforehand.
This romantic suspense was alright with exciting action, alpha hero and heroine, plus some interesting situations but the main characters ability to fight against so many bad guys was a bit unrealistic and the chase would break just long enough for sexy times. FBI agent Elin is teamed up with ex-SEAL Hale to go undercover and catch antiquities thieves.
UPDATE: I enjoy the action and adventure of Anna Hackett novels and UNTRAVELED does not disappoint. My recent reread was with the audio version narrated by Stella Bloom which allowed me to work outdoors while I listened. (Bloom isn’t the best voice artist I’ve heard but she keeps the tone of the books consistent with the stories mood and characters which I appreciate). UNTRAVELED read quickly and I was again quite entertained. I plan to purchase the audio for the next book in the series as well.
MY RATING GUIDE: 5 Stars. I love the action, adventure, creative settings and the “never give up” mentality of the THS novels. Great fun for a fast pace “escape” read. 1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/cute; 3.5= I enjoyed it; 4= I liked it a lot; 5= I LOVED THIS; IT WAS GREAT. (I seldom give 5 Stars).
ORIGINAL POST: Hale Carter is the newest hire (a year) and full time operative for Treasure Hunter Security since his retirement from SEAL duty. During his last SEAL mission, his team was apprehended and tortured. The others were all killed; Carter returned alone. Carter considers THS a job where he can use his finely tuned battle skills without the risks experienced as a SEAL. Even so, Carter still battles nightmares from that last mission and now prefers to keep his liaisons and most friendships light and easy.
FBI agent, Art Crime, Elin Alexander joined the FBI to make a difference in the world. Her father was killed and her mother, an art restoration expert, was discredited by an art thief gang during Elin’s teen years. The gang, operating under the name Silk Road, has since gained in power and added wealthy patrons over the years. Not satisfied with simple theft, their dark market art deals and excavations oftentimes leave a death trail afterward. As an FBI agent, Elin has purposed to catch Silk Road’s leaders and shut them down. She grabs an opportunity to work undercover on the gang’s latest job in Africa - chasing down a rumor regarding King Solomon’s Mines. Supposedly great treasure awaits the discoverer. Carter joins Elin undercover as her “muscle” or backup. It quickly becomes apparent that other interested parties have heard the rumors of treasure, as well - deep in the African desert, shots are fired and bodies drop. Only the quick, smart, experienced, and lucky may survive.
UNTRAVELED is bk#5 in Anna Hackett’s Treasure Hunter Security series - an action/adventure series similar in style to Indiana Jones. Each novel can be read as a standalone but the characters from the THS team previously introduced are featured as secondary characters in latter books. Reading the earlier books increases the enjoyment, IMO. I love this series and intend to read them all.
I recommend UNTRAVELED (and the Treasure Hunter Security series) to readers who enjoy fast action/adventure novels (with alpha heroes and capable heroines) that are fun, quick reading and at times a bit fantastic.
READER CAUTIONS - Not recommended to YAs or readers who prefer Clean fiction. VIOLENCE - Similar to Indiana Jones type movies, not described in a dark/graphic manner. PG/PG-13. PROFANITY - Yes. Strong language is used somewhat frequently. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. UNTRAVELED contains a lot of fun action scenes but the 2 main characters develop intimacy at about 50-75% and it is described in detail several times.
Series: Treasure Hunter Security #5 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Hale Carter and Special Agent Elin Alexander are going undercover to try and stop Silk Road from stealing artifacts from an ancient lost city in the Kalahari Desert. As they work together to find the lost city and defeat Silk Road they are also dealing with their growing feelings towards each other.
Hale has said from the beginning that he will never settle down but that quickly changes when he meets Elin. She is everything he didn’t know he needed. Elin is a smart, badass FBI agent who has given up on relationships. Together these two learn to trust each other and open themselves to love. I quite adored these two. They are so badass together. I loved that Hale never tried to impede or convince Elin that this mission was too dangerous for her. He just stayed by her side and supported her.
I quite enjoyed this adventure and the city they found. I can’t wait to see the next adventure for THS.
CW: PTSD and nightmares; gun violence and death; death of friends during war mentioned; torture mentioned; death of a parent mentioned;
Perhaps if I read these books spread out instead of back to back I would have found this book more interesting. I have not found this to be the best series but I enjoyed it enough to not go through the process of hunting down a new author to try on KU.
Skip this paragraph if you aren't new to the series. This series is extremely formulaic. The guy and girl meet either on the way to an expedition or on the expedition. They nearly get killed several times. At the point where it looks like they will absolutely die, they profess their love for each other because they don't think they will have a chance to say it later. Usually, at this point, something supernatural sweeps in and saves the day and then disappears. In this book, it was at least technology and not supernatural. Every single book follows this pattern except the last book and that's because Darcy doesn't go out into the field.
The characters are likeable enough and I like the family they have created at their security firm. I am even good with the supernatural things they run across. I just hate how predictable each story is. Just throw in a different set of myths or lost city or lost object, a new set of people, mix, and stir. And I don't usually have a problem with insta-love but it is unbelievable in these books. Not to mention, as Jack said in the movie Speed, "I have to warn you, I've heard relationships based on intense experiences never work." When adrenaline is running high, you feel differently about things and these couples aren't seeing each other in every day type of environments. I realize this is a suspension of disbelief type thing and if that were the only thing, I would get over it.
This book was the last one I could take. There was more info about the myths and their mission before they went on it than usual. I got very bored of that. It's better when it is pilfered out a little at a time.
Then there were the plot holes in this book. More so than in the previous ones. They are going undercover in the Silk Road. Yet, Hale has led a public life. It would be extremely easy to link him to THS. Even with a fake name, Silk Road would have a decent chance of recognizing him. Adding to that, when they get to the international city where they are supposed to meet up with Silk Road, they didn't keep a low profile. Their actions were not those of a pair of people undercover. That portion was poorly thought out. She also says she has been dropping his name to Silk Road any time someone mentions needing extra muscle so it will seem natural when she brings him in this time. The problem there is that his fake name was based off his real name, so she had him in mind when she made it BUT there had been no prior commitment from THS that Hale would be the one to go undercover. He volunteered only two or three days before the mission started.
Another small plot hole was Hale, who is several time zones away from home, claims his internal alarm clock woke him up just at daybreak. There is absolutely no way his internal alarm clock would have adjusted to another time zone after two or three days. There were just some little details like that which were not well thought out in the whole series, really.
And in this book, it is his technology that saves the day instead of supernatural things or animals long thought extinct. However, that lands us in sci-fi because the technology his tech was based on doesn't yet exist and some of it wouldn't work ever. (I have a mechanical engineering degree.)
I just couldn't take two more books that were copies of the first five but I did skip ahead to book 8 and I did enjoy it. I liked the relationship the best out of all the books. However, I did like the expedition in the first book. I liked the first book, it just needed to be fleshed out.
All in all, I do not recommend this series but if you have come this far and loved it, I'm sure you will love this one. If you have been on the fence, this might be the one to push you over the edge as it did me. And if you are that person, I do encourage you to read book 8 with Darcy and her sexy agent.
I think she could write a really great book if she took her time instead of turning out these books that are duplicates of each other. I get that if a formula works and is making you money, it's hard to convince yourself not to follow that formula. And I am surprised at just how many people love it.
Elin has never regretted her decision to join the Art Crime team under Alastair Burke’s leadership. If there was anyone more determined to bring down Silk Road than her, it was him; sometimes she wondered what drove him. Silk Road, in its infancy, had stolen a painting her art restorer mother had been working on, killing her father in the process, and this had destroyed her family. If Elin’s current mission is successful, she will get her promotion, enabling her to take down Silk Road and similar organisations. Elin’s ex-husband had just been a part of the plan she had set for herself, career, marriage and eventually children, but it had taken 2-years of marriage for her to realise she hadn’t loved him; the ultimatum was him or her job. Elin has been working undercover in Claude’s Silk Road cell for a few months and is bringing Hale Carter in as her undercover partner; a Treasure Hunter Security agent, their resident gadget man, and a former Navy SEAL. Elin always did her research before a mission and she wonders what demons Hale’s smile is hiding. A year ago, Hale had accepted Dec’s offer to join the team and it had been a lifeline Hale had needed; he likes his life just the way it is, but the nightmares are a reminder of his past. Elin sees an intelligence in Hale and realises she may have under-estimated him. Somehow Silk Road have gotten their hands on a previously unseen journal of Farini pointing them in the direction of Ophir and to a ring known as the Seal of Solomon; a relic of a mythical advanced race. John Drift, a well-known Hollywood actor, and one of the top members of Silk Road is financing the expedition; but before long it becomes clear that Elin and Hale’s cover is blown. Managing to escape from Drift, Elin and Hale head for the mines of Ophir, but are pursued by Silk Road and a mysterious drone. The Bushman’s Paradise, Ophir, King Solomon’s mines, the Lost City of the Kalahari were all the same thing and somewhere in there is Solomon’s ring. They have to find the ring before Silk Road does, but are confronted by a complex tunnel system, engravings, endless booby traps and a drone intent on killing them. This story also encompasses additional twists and turns that makes it quite an adventurous and exciting read; plus the addition of a blossoming romance. This is certainly a book I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending it. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
On one side we have Hale Carter Ex-Navy Seal and now a valued member of THS, who is also using his engineering skills by creating gadgets for the field work the team is doing. Handsome, but plagued from horrible nightmares, he enjoys the ladies only during a short time. He is set up with a FBI agent to cover her during a mission. Sounds like an easy job to be her backup while infiltrating Silk Road, right?
On the other side we have Elin Alexander, FBI agent, working on her promotion, with a life-goal of bringing down Silk Road. She had been undercover in the organization and needs now backup for the mission in the desert.
Unfortunately both have no idea what awaits them, not what treasure, not the dangers of the mission and most certainly not each other. Hale is used to assessing every situation and action accordingly, Alexander is “the boss” on the mission and can’t comprehend how she is supposed to work with someone like that, plus he is distractingly handsome. They don’t know it yet, but they are each other’s lifeline.
The THS series is my absolute favorite series from this author. The stories are based on myths and legends, well researched and fantastically written.
Annas’s book characters are strong, independent, smart, but still somehow normal with flaws and issues. There is nothing not to like about them. And the stories are fast paced full of action. This book is no exception. When I pick one of them up, I read it in one go, even when it gets late. The story plot is great and you have the right balance of action, romance and storyline.
Silk Road is THS “opponent” and here you see FBI and THS join forces in order to save an unknown treasure and a not existing city. Again Anna teases us with Darcy and Burke, we can only estimate how that book will go.
What else can I say? Just that I can recommend the book and the series when you like Indiana Jones, legends, myths, action and romance.
The series was getting a little too formulaic, so the "infiltrating the enemy camp" angle was refreshing...until the plot turned formulaic again. As in, after escaping the bad guys, the couple coincidentally finds the location of the treasure that they are searching for, then they hunker down and squeeze in some "do they even have time for this" sexy time, but then bad guys show up and then comes the final showdown.
Thankfully, this time there was no deus ex machina (unless the counts), or if it was one, it wasn't as eye-rolling as the previous ones (still headdesking over the ).
Hale and Elin were kick-ass battle partners, but I didn't care much for their romance, which I felt was the most "insta" of all the instalove romances featured throughout the series thus far. Their connection was made even more unbelievable thanks to Hale being a sudden, out-of-nowhere idiot towards the end (). I thought the "noble idiocy" trope only existed in Asian dramas, but apparently not, 'cuz Hale tried to pull that shitty move as last-minute "drama." Good thing it only lasted a few short paragraphs, but that just made it seem all the more forced and contrived.
Despite all the minor gripes, I was fangirling over all the little moments between Darcy and Agent Burke. (Hence the higher rating, heh.) Gimme Darcy and Agent Burke, and I'm a happy camper.
This action packed enticing romance takes the reader on a journey deep into the heart of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa; where the villainous Silk Road members will murder anyone that will prevent them from locating and keeping the treasure that awaits their greedy hands.
Hale Carter is a powerful stunning specimen of a man with a smile that makes you melt and want him. Nightmares from his last deploy as a Navy Seal has prevented him from committing to a woman in fear of hurting them while he sleeps. FBI Agent Elin Alexander is a blonde dazzling blue-eyed beauty. She is full of sass and is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Men find her quite attractive but she has yet to find one that will truly love her strong independent persona and accept her tough work ethics. When the two team up as spies to trap Silk Road they fight the attraction to each other until they can't.
A fascinating fast-paced story with powerful vivid scene descriptions, witty banter, and life threatening moments to keep you intrigued and turning pages until the end. The romance is certainly believable and filled with sensuous fiery passion, protection, devotion, and much respect; Hale and Elin are definitely a perfect match and I adored them together. If you enjoy reading treasure hunt stories with danger and heroes this is an excellent book for your library. I found this to be a most entertaining read and loved it so much {I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy.} Without reservations, I recommend this book.
Hale Carter is nerd in hottie clothing! He has mad engineering skills which he now puts to good use, now that he has left the Navy. He enjoys his job at THS and hopes to utilise his gadgets during his assignments. But he has ghosts from his past which plague him at night and for once his playboy reputation is of benefit, cos he doesn't stay the night with any of his lady friends and therefore does not put them in harms way.
Elin Alexander is a small, blonde, dynamo with a kickass attitude and super scary gungho attitude. She already put her job before her marriage once so for now relationships are way off her radar. She has been undercover trying to find out more about the Silk Road and is onto a hot tip but she is forced to take on help from THS when her next "assignment" is in the Kalahari desert. She saw what Silk Road did to her family and she will do anything to disrupt their plans.
Hale and Elin burn up the pages with sizzling attraction but try to curtail their bond since they are currently undercover and in permanent fight or flight mode. Hale's nightmares don't exactly help.
This series just excels! Indiana Jones on Speed meets SEALS. A great mix of history, myth, action, adventure and romance. I loves all of Hale's gadgets, I need to get me some of these little beauties!
Book 5 the storyline was good but it was missing something I normally can't put a book down but this one I could (so dishes got done) I was new to this author when I come across Norcross series then went on to read unit 52 and also the billionaires zane, liam and Mav.(read the series all in the wrong order) THS is the first series so I think you would enjoy more if you read first but for me Norcross and unit 52 is way better and being I read them first I see a different (also I know who the men in black is with there drone) it's a shame authors don't put something in about being in the same world as other series and list them in order, I think they would get higher ratings because books are about taking a journey and it's always sad when a series ends so if you can jump next door and see a few of them characters still growing (kids/wife/etc) it's great and you follow the new characters and enjoy more.(better marketing )
this series is worth reading just read this series first then unit 52,Norcross and billionaires.(There I high lighted it )
This is another great read and thrilling addition to the Treasure Hunter Security series about a family company that provides security to archaeological sites and museums. In this book, THS agent and former Navy SEAL Hale Carter has been assigned to go undercover with FBI special agent Elin Alexander. Elin has infiltrated a cell of The Silk Road, black market pirates who steal and sell priceless historical artifacts. They are headed into the desert to follow the trail of a lost city, one possibly connected to King Solomon. Elin's job is to discover what the Silk Road is after and to stop them from pilfering the site if they find it. Hale's job is to protect her. But there's a leak within the local law enforcement agencies and Silk Road knows they have a mole. If Elin and Hale are found out, it will be a fight for their lives. This voluntary review is of a prerelease copy and is my honest opinion
This series just keeps getting better all the time. The action is non stop and the romance is literally to die for. Finally Hale has his story and it takes a special woman to win his heart and that is FBI agent Elin Alexander who father was killed trying to protect her mother from Silk Road stealing a painting she was restoring. Since then Elin has trained and worked for the Art Crime Team with her boss being Alastair Burke. She is now partnered undercover in Silk Road with Hale and Treasure Hunter Security as their backup if things go wrong. They are searching for the lost mines of King Solomon who is supposed to have stored famous artefacts one being a ring. Elin and Hale will have their work cut out for them staying alive and finishing the mission so they can explore the attraction they feel for each other. Thank you to Anna Hackett for the entertaining review copy absolutely a wonderful read.
98% of this story is 5 stars. I have gushed all over goodreads about Anna Hackett's stories, her amazing characters and most importantly the lack of contrived romance drama in her stories that make them such a wonderful read. And I stand by that, it all still holds true, however I think every now and again a little drama has to happen for every author and I get that.
My least favorite in the series so far. Hale & Elin made a lot of poor decisions & that compounded with the fantastical nature of the series just grated on my enjoyment. The biggest things… 1) Why are we talking out of cover when not actually 1000% sure you could be overheard/caught. It seems like undercover 101 to not break cover while in the situation. 2) Why are we traversing a dark, booby trapped mine shaft in the middle of the night? And not making smart choices while doing so? 3) How is it that this mysterious 3rd party didn’t recognize either of them, but also yet targeted them over ALL the other real Silk Road people? When they also met some of the teams face to face & “know so much.” Make it make sense. 4) I also thought the insta-love over like 3 days wasn’t that believable & felt more like lust combined with trauma bonding. Hopefully we can get back to 5 stars the rest of the series…
"Untraveled" is awesome! One of the things that pleases me so much about the Treasure Hunter Security books is splendid research done to bring legends to life for the reader. It encourages me to find out more for myself - once I'm done reading the story, of course! I love the fascinating conjecture between Hale and Elin as they work to decipher the meaning of what they see. Both Hale and Elin are strong, capable people, able to come through some terrifying situations virtually unscathed. The attraction between them grows exponentially as they work together and learn more about each other. "When Hale Carter smiles, look away. He was like a solar eclipse." Yes, Elin finds him attractive! What a wild and crazy adventure! Join me in enjoying this splendid trip into one of author Anna Hackett's worlds. You will not regret it.
Hale Carter of Treasure Hunter Security,ex Navy seal with engineering degree, goes undercover with Elin to help take down a Silk Road operative named Claude Renard. This takes place in the Kalahari desert. Elin Alexander is a member of the FBI in the Art Crime Team division. She has infiltrated Silk Road which is a black market antiquity. They plunder ancient archaeological sites for profit by any means necessary including murder. A fact Elin knows n has experienced firsthand. As the story unfolds, we find Hale n Elin struggling to deny the obvious attraction to each other as they traverse the desert. Claude is searching for the lost city of Ophir. Which the Great Farini, a circus performer, described in a journal. This was the lost city of gold associated with Solomon. There r some twists n turns n the conclusion is not always cut n dry. However there is a HEA but not all the players r clear. To find out u need to read for ur self.
I lovel to travel and with the THS series I get to do a lot of armchair exploring. Anna Hackett has trekked us all over the world and it's freaking awesome. In Untraveled, she takes us back to yet another African desert, the Kalahari. A search for a fabled lost mine is the draw and of course Silk Road is smack dab in the middle of it. Elin Alexander is undercover and has infiltrated the ruthless thieves. Helping her on her assignment is the dark and broody loner, Hale Carter. Hale is THS's gadget manbut he's as deadly as they come in a fight. He and Elin journey in the desert with Silk Road but things go sideways pretty quickly when they're outed. They have to survive by their instincts and wits in a site that is heavily boobytrapped and exceptionally dangerous to traverse. But even in the heights of peril the powerful attraction they feel cannot be denied.
I keep wanting to type Unraveled instead of Untraveled, because there is plenty of travel in this entry in the Treasure Hunter Security series, and plenty of things that get unraveled, including the misapprehensions that hold FBI Agent Elin Alexander and Treasure Hunter Security Agent (and ex-SEAL) Carter Hale back from getting involved with anyone, especially each other.
THS and FBI nemesis Silk Road is at it again, on the track of a mythical site that they are certain holds great treasure and great power, this time hidden somewhere in the brutal Kalahari Desert. Agent Alexander has been operating undercover with the Silk Road cell that believes they have pinpointed the famous Lost City of the Kalahari, and that somewhere amongst its legendary treasures lies the equally famous Seal of Solomon, a ring that supposedly gave King Solomon the power to command demons and djinn, and to speak with animals – and possibly more.
If it exists, it is valuable beyond anyone’s wildest imagination, just as a symbol, especially since that symbol is purported to contain one of the largest uncut diamonds ever discovered.
Agent Alexander sees this operation as her way to get back at Silk Road for the death of her father, as well as a way to score her long-sought promotion to a multi-agency team in Europe with Interpol. It’s a promotion that is guaranteed to give her way more opportunities to settle her score with Silk Road, but her single-minded pursuit of that goal has left her little time or inclination for relationships that might get in the way of her career. Her marriage was just one of the casualties of that pursuit.
Carter Hale sees himself as damaged. He left the SEALs as the last survivor of his team, a team that he was not able to save. THS keeps him busy and gives him a way to use the skills that the U.S. Navy spent so many years training into him. His sideline, tinkering with operations gear and making the top-of-the-line even better has brought him a surprising measure of financial security. He’s at THS to keep his demons at bay.
But traveling undercover through the unforgiving Kalahari desert, knowing that their companions are homicidal lunatics, only able to trust each other, forges a bond that neither Erin nor Carter is willing to break.
Even though they both believe that they must. If they get out alive.
Escape Rating B: Untraveled is a solid entry in the Treasure Hunter Security series. It’s a lot of fun to read, as are all the books in the series. And while Undiscovered is the story that begins the journey, it probably isn’t necessary to read them all, or to read them all in order, in order to enjoy any particular one.
Untraveled very much fits into the pattern of this series, where THS is hired to protect an an absolutely fabulous find or legendary place and has to battle the entirely evil and mercenary Silk Road. As the adventure progresses, the hero and heroine find themselves isolated and in deadly danger, and finally give in to the attraction that has been simmering between them from their first meeting. As an added bonus, the “macguffin” that they eventually find is usually even more magnificent and more legendary than anyone imagined.
In this particular case it’s that the Lost City of the Kalahari, King Solomon’s Mines and the legendary treasure city of Ophir are all one and the same.
It’s a fun pattern, and Untraveled certainly shows just how well it works. Because I love this author and her writing, I have a couple of small quibbles that kept Untraveled from rising to a B+. As an undercover FBI agent, Erin Alexander plays a bit fast and loose with her cover. If she’s embedded with a group this crazy and this paranoid, she would not break cover for anything, certainly not to interrogate a low-level operative and then turn him over to local police forces. Someone is bound to talk, and they do, exposing both Alexander and her THS partner.
The ending of the story includes one of my least favorite tropes, the one where the guy, deciding that he’s unworthy, tries to give up the love of his life because he’s so damn certain that it’s better for her, without bothering to ask her what she wants. I hate that one every time. Erin should have slapped him silly after she grabbed him.
And unlike most of the other THS books, while we do find the mysterious artifact, we don’t seem to discover what the thing is or does. I mean, yes, it’s a ring with a honking big diamond in it, but we knew that at the beginning. While no one expects it to be able to call demons or djinn, so far, all of the previously discovered artifacts have had some surprisingly cool powers, which have generally been revealed in rather spectacular rescues, catastrophes or bits of both. On this one, the jury seems to still be out, even when the book ends.
On my other hand, one thing I’m very, very curious about is that another player was introduced into this rivalry between THS and Silk Road. There’s another group sticking their oar into these particularly choppy waters, and its someone that the FBI seems to think they can play some kind of ball with.
Or at least lead FBI Agent Alistair Burke acts as if he can control them. Whether he can control anything, including the crazy unresolved sexual tension between himself and THS’s co-owner and tech wizard Darcy Ward is something that readers will hopefully see resolved in a future entry in the series. I’m really waiting for that one.
I received a free ARC as part of the ARC team and as usual I am so glad to be part of this team!! I love the Treasure Hunter team and the new characters who keep joining them. The good guys are good but still with a real personality and sometimes a dark past and their own scars. The bad guys are always really bad and scary. And now, we even have unknown that we keep wondering about. Can't wait to see more of them. I really loved this book and its take on the King Solomon's myth and the adventure that lead our heroes to the treasure. I was a bit disappointed that nothing strange or unexplicable happened this time around but I still spent an amazing time with Elon and Hale. Can't wait for the next!!!
Morgan Kincade (Unfathomed) may have found a kindred soul. In Untraveled, we're introduced to Elin Alexander, a tough as nails FBI agent working with Agent Burke (read Agent Arrogant & Annoying as per Darcy Ward). Teamed up with THS's Hale Carter, they go undercover, working to bring down Silk Road. As always, the action is engrossing and non stop and the chemistry between Hale and Elin is hot and heavy. The Treasure Hunter Security series brings the reader an action packed look into history with a generous helping of romance and a dash of paranormal that gives thought to the idea that all legends have a grain of truth to them.
Fifth book in the Treasure Hunter Security series and they are just getting better . The suspense, the way they work together to find out what the clues are trying to tell them, the interaction with the rest of the team. This is ex- Navy SEAL Hale Carter and Special Agent Elin Alexander's story, you get a teaser at the end of who the next Treasure Hunter Security person to get their story might be. This book is in my Wish List and will be bought soon. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
She's FBI, he's ex-Navy Seal working for Treasure Hunter Security. She's going after Silk Road, he's going as her body guard. They're undercover and headed to the Kalahari desert in Southern Africa.
Another very enjoyable entry in the Treasure Hunter Security Series. Every book is as exciting as an Indiana Jones movie. My only complaint is that they aren't long enough; no such thing as too much when it comes to this Series! Treasure Hunter Security is my favorite of Ms. Hackett's series.
Another adrenalin pumping adventure from Anna Hackett! Hale Carter of THS is partnered with one of the FBI's most efficient agents, Elin Alexander. Elin has managed to infiltrate one branch of Silk Road and has discovered that they have found information leading to the lost city of Ophir in the Kalahari. The FBI have asked THS to provide an agent to act as backup for Elin. The sparks fly as soon as Hale and Elin meet. There's enough action and romance to satisfy any junkie and to overlook any minor inconsistencies.
