The Mark of Cain

A beautiful young woman is hideously violated.

A brilliant man is savagely beheaded.

An innocent child is sent to a screaming death.

The spirit of brilliant and twisted TV director Frank Cain is free of his bedbound body and growing stronger with each new sadistic act of his real-life horror show. Only the lovely and vulnerable Susie Keller knows the truth…the truth that no one around her will believe…the truth that makes insanity seem tame and nightmares sweet…the truth that she is now the target of Frank Cain’s unholy hate and even more unspeakable lust….

If you are familiar with Nick Sharman then you will be aware that a majority of books he wrote are rather slim...apart from this one. At 340+ pages it is by far the longest and most structured of his horror novels.

I actually really enjoyed this one - it stood up well to the test of time considering it was written in the 80's. If you have seen the film, "Patrick Still Lives", then you will get a feel for what this book is all about. It has good character development, gory scenes and enough creepy moments to put the reader on edge.

In a way, it almost went on too long as the story seemed to be winding down before it fired right back up into full swing. The last 40 pages are pretty darn good, it painted quite a vivid picture and had me glancing several times at the dark stairway to make sure nobody was slithering down it.

A good eighties example if you can ignore the slightly cringe worthy title - you may be forgiven to think this is a teenage fiction book - it's not...

Next! by Nick Sharman is some good sci-horror. Published by Signet in 1986.

Susie and Mike are two New Yorkers who move to London to pursue new careers. They move into this new place at Devere Court. All is well, except for the TV that comes to life on its own, and begins to display weird messages. As the messages become more cryptic, Susie begins to realize there is a malevolent presence residing in their new home.

The plot had me hooked early on, but the pacing in the climax is too slow. Some nice death scenes throughout; Nick Sharman is a capable author. But the ending was a bit of a slog.
