One of pulp meister Irving Greenfield's gothics under the pen name of Alicia Grace, "Wharf Sinister" contains a classic naive heroine: in this case, poor Rachel Mundy, who has been raised by her aunt and who moves to New York during the Civil War after a premarital affair ruins her reputation. Hired as a governess to a wealthy shipping family, Rachel finds herself caught up in a Confederate plot. Heaving bosoms, opium addicts, public riots—and a lot of attention to her heaving bosom, a Greenfield specialty—become part of this silly, but enjoyable mix, including a hero who comes in practically at the last minute.
