Five Minute Man

Rate this book
"I WRITE sex, Liz. I don't HAVE it."

Holly McTierney is a romance writer with zero romance in her life. She dreams of a man who can sweep her off her feet... and give her an orgasm in five minutes flat. However, after hitting the big 3-0 this year, she just wants a guy to snuggle up for a movie and some Chinese takeout.

Or maybe just a man who'll call her back. Sigh...

Adam Grayson works hard on his renovation business - too hard to have any time for dating. Years of construction have given him a rugged look that women can't help but notice, but he never seems to notice them back. Apart from a crazy ex who makes any excuse to run into him, it had been years since he had held a conversation with a woman for more than five minutes. However, his matchmaker nephew has a plan to change all that.

Holly and Adam are perfect for each other, but Adam's ex will stop at nothing to keep them apart. When she gets her claws back into Adam, will Holly let him go? Or can he prove to her that he really is her five-minute man?

I thought I would like this. I started out liking it. The hero and heroine were interesting and seemed like common sense people. The hero, Adam, seemed a little prissy and prudish with his mental list of attributes his perfect woman should have. The heroine, Holly, is a writer and seemed like she could bring him out of his prissy/prudish behavior. After some "unofficial dates", he kisses her and then runs off because of the feelings it causes him to have. And then all the sudden it was like they had personality transplants. Holly shows up the YMCA for a yoga lesson with her friend, Liz, with the intention of "accidently" running in to Adam because he hasn't called since the kiss. She sees him speaking with a woman, Eve, who is acting very familiar and overhears him tell Eve that "it was a business meeting" when Eve asks about his seeing another woman. So, Holly thinks she's misinterpreted their time together and that he was just interested in her for her house (she owns an old stone cottage that needs renovation and Adam is a carpenter who specializes in renovating old homes). What really happened is that Eve is the ex one-night-stand of the formerly prissy/prudish Adam and she's kind of psycho. Adam knows Eve will give Holly a hard time if Eve finds out about Holly, so he downplayed his relationship with Holly. And it spirals out of control from there.

Adam keeps trying to get in touch with Holly and she will only respond via text or not at all. She finally answers the phone one time and tells him she's sorry, but she's not in a financial situation to do any work on her home currently, but she'll keep him mind. Adam then corners Holly's friend Liz at the YMCA to ask if she knows what is going on. Liz doesn't want to betray Holly's confidence, but she sees how miserable they both are, so she tells Adam what she knows and convinces him the way to get to Holly is to be her "five minute man" (which is explained earlier as a man in a romance novel who gave the heroine an orgasm within five minutes). So, Adam shows up at Holly's house and proceeds to turn "alpha". They appear to have unprotected sex, despite Adam having admired Holly initially for her common sense and self-awareness (glancing under her car and around her before entering her car, for example). This goes on for a couple of weeks with something like 10 orgasms a day because Adam is so "alpha". Neither of them mention Eve at all and I don't understand how Holly could let that go after seeing them together at the Y and overhearing part of their conversation. They basically just ignore the whole Eve thing. Eve shows up at Holly's house and threatens Holly. Holly never tells Adam about it, but she tells Liz. Liz has some experience with Eve and warns Holly that she's dangerous, but doesn't give her any details. Eve calls Adam and threatens Holly, but Adam never mentions it to Holly. Holly's dog inexplicably gets sick. Holly gets two flat tires from nails. None of this clicks for Holly that it could be related to Eve. Adam suspects, but doesn't say anything. They just continue to have sex and 10 orgasms a day because Adam is so "alpha" that he can't handle his ex one-night-stand in a forthright manner.

Then Adam thinks he should say something, but wants to do it in person, so he leaves a voice mail for Holly to be careful that day, stay close to home, that he has something he wants to tell her and to call him when she gets the message. Next thing you know, there is an explosion at an out building on Holly's property and she is hurt. During this time, Eve calls Adam and asks him to meet her for a drink. He eventually agrees because he's a dumb ass. She has a drink waiting for him when he gets to the bar. It's drugged. And, of course, he drinks it. She then proceeds to take him home with her and rape him while taking pictures that she sends to Holly from Adam's phone. Eventually, Liz tells Holly that Eve did the same thing to her brother. Because that wouldn't have been useful information the first time Liz mentioned to Holly that Eve was dangerous, right?

There is no dealing with the aftermath of Adam's rape. It just happens. He moves on. Some legal proceedings happen and Eve is sent to a psychiatric center (not for the first time). Six months happen. Holly writes a story about her time with Adam and gives it to him as a Christmas gift - her first contact with him since the explosion/rape. It's titled "Five Minute Man" and the last page of the story ends with "To be determined..." So, Adam shows up at Holly's house with a ring and proposes. She accepts. The epilogue tells what happens nine months later. Holly is pregnant and overdue for delivery, but she's at a book signing for her "Five Minute Man" book because it was a huge success.

I really wanted to like this. I thought that I would during the beginning. And then all the characters got really stupid and I was SO disappointed. I don't like to leave bad reviews. Usually I just leave a few yay/nay comments. But, this was just WTF for me.

This book was tough. Its hard to rate it even. I just did not see the ending of this book going the way it did- and I really didn't like the ending. Rape is a tough subject to read about, and whether its a male/female being raped its awful. The characters were just okay for me, the connection between them was cute, and their stories were, well, cute. The interference between them and the Eve was STUPID. Literally one conversation between them about her and the ENTIRE book would have changed for the better. One. Single. Conversation. And the rape probably wouldn't have happened. That thought kills the enjoyment for the book for me. It just made me think the H/h were stupid.

Hot witty romance.

I loved the start of this book Holly and her best/only friend Liz are both intelligent, engaging and witty, which is a rare combination these days, they were an absolute pleasure to read and I couldn't believe that I'd found such a gem of a book.
Holly is thirty, single and lives alone with her dog Max, she write romance books but doesn't really believe in romance. The book opens with Holly snorting with laughter when she reads a passage from a bestselling erotic book about a five minute orgasm...as if, that's just a myth surely. Anyway Holly's a bit of a home bird but every Tuesday she meets Liz for dinner and their conversation was an absolute joy to read and had me laughing out loud in places. Their regular waiter Brandon arranges for his Uncle Adam to meet Liz but something about Holly attracts Adam, he also seems to be amazing, a regular, intelligent and again witty guy, could this book get any better, I was excited and hooked loving every minute. Adam's nephew Brandon was entertaining and wise beyond his years, and Max, Max was a person in a dogs body, loved him.
Holly was fantastic throughout the whole book not a single 'too stupid to live' moment in sight, well not from Holly anyway.
I have to be honest and say that for me, and yes this is only my opinion the book didn't live up to it's early promise, that's not to say it's a bad book because it's not, it takes the route of so many books before it, psycho ex who won't let go, bad decisions, mistakes, regrets and misunderstandings, this may sound harsh and it's not meant to be because the beginning of the book rates 5 stars from me the rest is 3 stars which isn't a bad rating, the majority of free romantic reads fall into this category, for me anyway.
On the whole I really enjoyed this book and it made a nice change that the stupid decisions and mistakes were made by the man instead of the woman so I'm giving 4 stars.

Holly is a writer. Adam has a renovation business.

Holly needs a muse and finds one when she bumps into Adam. Her stories flow as she thinks about him. After meeting Adam and going on a few dates they are working on forming a relationship. When Holly overheard hears a conversion and takes thinks the wrong way she believes he only wants to be with her to help her renovate her house. So she breaks it off. After clearing that mess up in steps Adam's crazy Ex again. She will have Adam no matter what.

Crazy Ex stirring up trouble reminds Holly that she and Adam should never be together. Can Adam convince Holly that she is the only one for him and that he loves only her?

Lots of drama in this story but also tons of funny and sweet parts to balance it out.

I highly recommend this story

Five Minute Man by Abbie Zanders is a fun contemporary romance. Ms. Zanders has delivered a well-written book and furnished it with a stellar cast of characters. Holly is a romance writer living in her dream (even if it needs some work) home. Adam enjoys spending time with Holly. Along comes Adam's stalker and chaos begins. Adam and Holly's story is loaded with drama, humor, sizzle, misunderstandings, action and a bit of suspense. I loved reading this book and look forward to my next book by Abbie Zanders. Five Minute Man is book 1 of the Covendale Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

First let me say Ms. Zanders has a cute story in Five Minute Man. There's plenty of romance and humor on one hand, and plenty of "crazy ex-GF" drama on the other. There are two reasons I haven't given the book a higher rating.

An occasional typo is understandable in a SP book. But Five Minute Man has quite a few. Missing, misplaced, and repeated words throughout. In two cases an entire sentence is repeated. The sentence is on one page, then repeated a few pages later, as if Ms. Zanders decided to move it, but didn't delete one of them. It was enough to make me stop and back up a couple of times, and no author wants that for her readers.

The other reason I'm not giving a higher rating is, at the risk of sounding like a prude, a heads-up about the explicit sex would have been nice. I found those scenes jarring sometimes, because as I said, this is a cute story, with a lot of humor. I know this is really popular in books these days, but it's just not always necessary. A lot of readers like to use their own imagination, rather than be given details. Lots and lots of details. I also found the language pretty off-putting. It didn't always seem to fit the characters or situation, and again, it was usually unnecessary. Quite a few instances of God's name being tossed around.

I'd encourage Ms. Zanders to get an editor and a couple of good, strong beta readers.

I want one! End of review? Nah, I'll tell you more.

Holly is almost thirty and her family is hounding her about her biological clock and not being married. She has purposely moved an hour away from them for peace and quiet. She writes erotic romance novels... and thinks a 5 minute orgasm is a myth.

Now here is Adam. He is the quiet kind. He really does not want the one-night-stands anymore. He is in his mid thirties and keeps hoping he will find a simple, uncomplicated, smart girl that will blow his socks off.

They are perfect for each other aren't they? Varabing, Varaboom! They meet, they crash into each other, he helps her with a flat tire, one thing leads to the other and... HEY! You will just have to read about this. It is HOT, sexy, passionate, and let us say that Holly has now done her thorough research regarding a 5 minute orgasm.

Not everything runs smooth. The mistakes of his past come to haunt them both, lives are at stake, and a dog comes to the rescue. Wait! I forgot to tell you, Max is a husky and he is in charge of protection.

I absolute loved this book. This is the book you need to read to smile, laugh, de-stress, and get your "motor " running. The writing is top notch and these are adorable characters... plus one more character you will hate and want to smack.

It was ok. The start was promising, both funny and interesting but it went downhill once Eve (the villain) came into play.

I'll try not to spoil this book too much but I can't keep completely quiet either. For all the things Eve's done and how she acted - both in the past and present - I expected an ending to it, to her. At least something that would say this isn't the last time we'll hear of her, as I suspect she'll be mentioned or more in the third book, but nothing. Her character grew and grew and grew more, very quickly, and stopped. Explosion - literally - and she disappeared like a magician in a puff of smoke. No justice, no anything. Eve and done. That was the biggest "what the hell?!" I have about this book. It's the worst possible thing an author can do - to develop a character and give him/her enough of a role to affect the storyline and its main heroes, and then flop it by disappearing that character with no proper goodbye.

I get it, the books are connected. Liz, the best friend, has her story told in book numero dos, and considering Eve has left her mark on Liz as well, it's not the end. But for this book, Five Minute Man, there should be some end, literally something to that character instead of just stopping to write her into the story. She was the whole cause of the rift, the villain, the evil-doer, a rather obvious danger that what? Solved itself and mentioning it was forgotten?

Anyway, Adam and Holly got their HEA after an explosive adventure of falling for each other (excuse my puns, I can't help them) and there was a dog sidekick - always a good feature. But my rating is so low and yet generous because of the bitch in the grass, or snake, whatever, that was left unfinished.

>Book review – Five Minute Man
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st book in the Covendale series and ends in an HEA. Adam is a contractor ready to settle down. Holly is a romance writer ready to give up on romance. They meet with the help of Adam’s nephew and the slow burn romance is something to read. Adam tries to be a gentleman. Holly second guesses everything he does and doesn’t do, which is exactly how real relationships work in the beginning.
>There is some danger involving a crazy ex of Adam’s, but some of the events don’t ring true. Adam goes to a bar he is familiar with and has one drink. He is drugged and acting drunk and no one thinks anything is fishy. Adam is not the type to drink to excess, so I would think the others at the bar would recognize that something is wrong with him. The story has some funny conversations, similar to “Sex and the City”.
>This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 4 stars. In this story, the male protagonist is assaulted, but he seems okay with it. I would think he’d be upset. He was raped. Just because he is male doesn’t make it any less horrific. The HEA was great, but it took too long for the couple to get back together.

The title itself is inspiring and brings all sorts of idea's to mind. This became the main topic of conversation between Holly (the ROMANCE writer) & Liz (the BFF) over their weekly girls night out. Is it possible? Can it be done? Hmmm, so much to contemplate.

After Adam bumps into Holly they decide to meet for coffee. Things start slowly from there until they decide to just go for it. Dating insecurities come at all ages. But look out because once they start they are at it like bunny rabbits, and so happy for it.

This was very well written. It was creative and flowed without interruption. Miss. Zanders makes you feel like your listening to a friend tell a story over a glass of wine. It makes you reflect upon your own histories wonder did I ever misunderstand a situation?

Happy Reading!

Holly McTierney is a romance author who is missing her muse. She doesn't believe in prince charming, HEA's and getting an orgasm in under five minutes in real life. Adam Grayson has a construction business and is intrigued when he overhears Holly and her friend Liz talking. Then he finds Holly with a flat tire on the side of the road, helps her, and they get to know each other. One thing leads to another and the two start dating, but a jealous ex of Adam's has other ideas. There were parts of the book that were interesting, and it moved along quickly, but other parts that just had me shaking my head. Adam's stance that he didn't like a woman if she asked him out. Then, the who thing with Eve and how, if either one had said something about her, the bit mess could have been avoided (and it didn't really add much to the story and was even a bit disturbing.)

juvenile and painfully outdated

The best part of this book is the beginning when the girls are overheard by Brandon, their cute waiter and nephew of the MMC Adam. It swiftly tanks from there. Between the retrograde sexist gender expectations of both the FMC and the MMC, a husky pup which the FMC has anthropomorphised, and crummy behaviors such as showing up with her bestie at the Y where she knows the MMC has a standing weekly basketball game and eavesdropping on the MMC then acting on the bits overheard - as if those who listen to private conversations don’t deserve exactly what they get! - this book is tired and dated and belongs firmly in the 1980s romance heap.
What comes next is so insane it’s as though it’s two completely different books. I can’t recommend this one at all.

This was a cute story that was different but typical romance that readers love. There is instalove, steam, humor that weaves together a beautiful story. While it was fast paced, it really worked for these characters. There’s not a ton o can stay, but Adam was totally swoonworthy, and he wooed Holly on the type of fashion that makes you feel giddy.

I want to say I loved it and while I really enjoyed the romance aspect, and the plot when it comes to a crazy ex, I think the way it was done left a lot to be imagined. It felt rushed and then I didn’t like that I have so many questions still running through my head. Even with that it was a cute, pretty low angst read and I plan to read Liz’s story some day. 3/3.5 stars #2OCCJD

Another awesome story. Loved it.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but you have to look at the context in which it was taken to truly understand its worth. Most are beautiful but some are just mean and spiteful from psychotic people because they want what you have and they can't have. And in cases like that it can ruin a wonderful relationship and keep true sole mate's apart from each other. It is just too bad it took so long for Adam and Holly to reunite and that was after Holly sat sown to write their story as a means to move on. When she was done she realized it was the best story she ever wrote. What does Adam do after he reads a copy of the manuscript she left on his doorstep just before Christmas?

Good until it wasn't

I really liked this book, until I didn't.

Spoiler alert:
I think Adam wimped out at the end. He's the one who messed up by meeting up with his crazy ex and not telling Holly about her to begin with. Then after the unthinkable happens, he never bothers to try to explain or make amends, even months later. If Liz hadn't had some personal experience with Eve's craziness in the past, would Holly have ever found out the whole truth? Even after the investigation, he never attempts to make it right in any way. Holly, who is the wronged one, has to make the first move. She deserved more from him.

I've discovered that I'm reading Abbie Zanders books back to front, but it's refreshing to realise her writing was just as captivating with her early releases as it is today.

A well-written, emotional, and at times confronting storyline, with engaging and likeable characters who made this story one that was easy to read and thoroughly enjoyable. Naturally, the evil ex and her diabolical behaviour where hard to swallow, but these events played a pivotal part of the overall plot and storyline.

Ms Zanders has a natural talent and has constantly delivered stories that I'm happy to have discovered. I look forward to reading Liz's story next and any that follow.

Fun, quirky and sexy

I really enjoyed this book, it was a warm lighthearted read with a touch of darkness. Holly was an awesome character very quirky and sassy yet with a sweet, innocense about her. I also liked the fact that she was a woman not some doe eyed teeny bopper. Adam was a sexy, kind attentive alpha male who knew what he wanted but wasn't sure it existed until he literally crashed into Holly at the diner.

If you like books like Wait with me by Amy Daws then you will love this quirky read.

Five Minute Man

The story was an enjoyable read and had some unexpected twists that had me trying to unsuccessfully second guess where the plot was taking me. The characters became so real that there were times I just wanted to shake them. There's a villain that's not often found in romance stories so although the villain is a central figure throughout, that person isn't recognized as such until well into the tale.

Oh, my. I started smiling on the first page and kept smiling through many of the pages thereafter. Moments of fun, of serious, of uncertainty, and some serious time wanting to beat some characters. Friendship and romance, sexy times and family (for better or worse). Some unpredictable times but so very very good. How good? Once I finish with my review I will proceed to purchase the rest of the series.

Fantastic

I love these characters. Holly and Liz’s friendship, Adam and his nephew Brandon and the connection between Holly and Adam are fun and entertaining.

I read this book in one day because it was addicting. Watching Holly and Adam become romantically involved is exciting, but then Eve, a former and regrettable brief fling of Adam’s tries to win him back which takes the story to an entirely new level.

Enjoyable Read

Abbie Zander has written another enjoyable contemporary romance. Five Minute Man has the most jaded characters that are destined for some heartbreak and romance. I truly do appreciate the “they live happily ever after.”

This is amazingly good and different!

This is not your twenty-something story. This is about thiry-something author and a alpha male. This was an awesome read . It was funny and very sexy and so informative about authors and what it takes to write a story.
