Young readers will discover all about the environment by joining the Sophie and Spencer on their walk around the neighborhood. They'll learn how we can all make our world a cleaner, healthier place to live in. What happens when we waste electricity? How does pollution affect our beautiful planet?
Stunning photographs combine with lively illustrations and engaging, age-appropriate stories in DK Readers, a multilevel reading program guaranteed to capture children's interest while developing their reading skills and general knowledge.
With DK Readers, children will learn to read--then read to learn!
One doesn't expect much from an easy reader but they could have put a little effort into it. My 7 year old read it to me and noticed that in the text, the children found three used boxes and labeled them paper, plastic, and glass, but the pictures show plastic bins rather than (presumably) cardboard boxes.
When we help to protect the environment, we're also helping ourselves. This book takes an active, hands-on approach that is so suitable for the youngest readers.
Photographs make this Level 2 Reader more sophisticated than it would seem otherwise. I admire how author Leslie Garrett uses simple language to speak directly to kids, including lively dialog.
Seems to me, the dialog here works really well. For instance (excerpted from Page 11 and following):
SPENCER [a kid]: "Where is he taking the garbage?" asked Spencer.
AUNT CHARLOTTE "It goes to a landfill." [She proceeds to explain what happens to garbage once it's put in a landfill.]
"We should be careful about the garbage we throw out."
I'll say!
HEY, ON A PERSONAL NOTE
Goodreaders, I've lived in Tokyo, where recycling is not only mandatory but it's done in a suitably complex manner, with much sorting done by every apartment dweller, every homeowner. I felt honored and grateful, having a chance to participate in that.
By contrast, for decades, I've lived in Northern Virginia, in America. Although recyclables are collected each week, I seldom see anyone else on my block put anything out to be recycled. Maybe if more of my neighbors read books like this one, our block of homeowners wouldn't be so shockingly negligent.
Also, you can be sure that my household recycles specialized items properly, whether used batteries or food supplements and medicines, etc. I'm very glad this topic is covered here.
MY OPINION
If you're a caring person, show that you care about our Planet Earth.
Three cheers for the author and everyone else who helped make this excellent book available. Three cheers and...
Always love book by DK, it's really important to teach kids how to take care of our planet! Big size characters, right from kids since 5 or 6 even i think
A wonderfully written book about our environment with real photographs. The photographs put a real human face to the need for recycling, and helping our environment. It is filled with lots of information that would be perfect to use when discussing the environment in the classroom. I would love to have this in my classroom, and enough copies for each student to use.
A nice book at a child's level that discusses the hard topic of recycling and reusing items. This "green" book helps kids to start thinking deeper about this major topic. Great for lessons on the environment.
It's sort of like reading a kid's introductory version of Animal, Vegetable, MiracleAnimal, Vegetable, Miracle and a good starting place for getting your kids aware and involved.
Appropriate for PK and K read aloud. Global warming sentence seems a bit alarmist for this age group: "This means there will be more floods, and people and animals will lose their homes." I do like the suggestion to save energy - turn off the TV and read a book!
