The year is 1888, and Doctor Charles Grazier has succeeded in reanimating the body of his dead wife. Even though she lacks a heart, Catherine Grazier is sitting up on the slab in the basement, but there's one problem.
She won't stop screaming.
As Grazier works desperately to fix the problem, he tells himself that eventually he will be able to get his wife back. Soon, however, he's forced to consider the possibility that his work has produced an unintended and terrifying side-effect.
Meanwhile, in the present day, Maddie explores the house. Although she doesn't believe in ghosts, she soon starts noticing strange sounds during the night. And then, when she meets one of the neighbors, she starts to learn a little more about the history of the house, and about the strange presence that is said to scare people away.
The Lady Screams is the fourth book in a new eight-part horror series, titled The House of Jack the Ripper. This book ends on a cliffhanger, and the story continues in the next book in the series.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
I really did not want to like this series but with the first book I scored it a 4. The next two were rather tedious and I scored both 3, but this one was exceptionally good and received the maximum 5. I now cannot wait for the next instalment, well done Amy Cross.
I feel like this series is finally starting to make great progress. Not only are more things happening, I'm getting to know the minds of the characters more and more. They're really growing on me..the Dr's storyline is still my favorite part. This one had a bit of gore too. The more I read, the more I like Jack, which is something I didn't expect to happen. Dr. Glazier on the other hand I really don't care for, but I love what he's doing with bodies. Maddie's story is getting way more interesting. The past couple books I tired of the same ole same ole that didn't really progress the story of the house. Now that she's met a neighbor and returned, I absolutely love her storyline
Dr Grazier is determined to get his wife back, and he's going even further off the rails in his pursuit to do so.
Past and present are starting to blend ever more in this 4th instalment of this fantastic take on the Jack The Ripper murders.
Maddie is still awaiting the arrival of her friend Alex. She makes a new acquaintance, and learns a lot more than she probably wanted to know. There are ghostly feelings, strange sounds and sights out of the corner of your eye.
In 19th century London, the doctor sinks to new depths of depravity, in an effort to resurrect the corpse of his beloved wife. Jack proves again that he is a lot more intelligent and, also, more feeling than he is given credit for, but the doctor will still not listen. When the doctors wife starts moving, things become even more creepy.
This story is becoming ever more oppressive and the atmosphere takes a decidedly darker turn. Give this series a try and enjoy.
Let's just say that I read this book in the middle of the night, took away any chances of getting a proper sleep, and was completely scared out of my mind. These books are so atmospheric. Read them in the right setting and you will almost have a heart attack. This is definitely my favourite book in the series so far. At this point I feel so bad for Maddie. She has, like, no friends and no one is helping her properly. Obviously, with everything that's going on the world is pretty paranoid and she is stuck in the middle of the conflict. I'm scared for her future because I have some ideas as to what will happen. Also... Delilah is NOT in a good place right now. I'm so scared for her. Jack is giving me the creeps and needs to go and Catherine needs to be killed because what's going on in the basement is starting to give me real spooky vibes. I need to not read the next one at night because it's not good for me.
I love the writing of Amy Cross. Her stories are so engrossing, it’s difficult to put them down once you start reading. She is consistently a good writer and you always know beforehand that, you’ll enjoy the book. The only problem is that it was too short and I read it in a very short time.
This is yet a continuing story of Maddie from the present and Dr. Grazier from the past. Maddie's wound seems to have miraculously healed while in the Ripper house and Dr. Grazier is wondering if he has really brought back his wife from the dead or something else. Now onto the next book. Great series start at 1 or be lost.
This installment demonstrates the doctor's continued fall into insanity, where his arrogance knows no bounds. There are hints of what is to come and nothing is good.
Two first-person narratives give depth to the characters and storyline - I like that.
This would be a great novel of horror. I enjoyed this one in this series. With each book the characters are developing and the story keeps getting better. Can't wait to read the next book.
I cannot stop reading this series. They just keep getting better and better. I’m heading right into book 5. This series is amazing and just keeps you trying to figure out what is going on. I love it!!!
Such an amazing story line. How ones mind can produce such stories is fascinating. This story just keeps building on the previous book and grabs you so that you HAVE to read the next one so you'll know what happened next.
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting how it switched back and forth in time and kept you interested in each section. Of course it is an Amy Cross book so it has to be good. Try it and see if you agree with me.
This series is palatable. Once you get a taste for it there is no turning back. As more history is revealed you can't help but turn the pages faster. Great read.
I can’t wait to read the next! A great set of characters and storyline. Very unsettling. I normally don’t read series like thus but I couldn’t stop after the first
