7 books53 followersPatrick served his country at Fort Benning in the 1980s, with a specialty in Advanced Infantry Training. A conversation Patrick had with a schizophrenic veteran who believed he was a secret assassin sparked an idea that would eventually inspire him to write his first novel, Execution of Justice.
After the military, Patrick attended Presbyterian College, where he majored in Political Science and began to have short fiction published in PC's literary magazine, Figs and Thistles. He eventually earned a Masters Degree in Chemistry. His GRE scores qualified him for entry into Mensa.
While Patrick's military and Political Science background provided excellent groundwork for Execution of Justice, the Chemist in him has generated a new techno-thriller series, Mortal Coil.
The first book in the Mortal Coil series will be released in 2018. Themes include the hubris of Man and the catastrophic possibilities of genetic engineering.
Patrick lives in South Carolina with his wife and newest son.

Edge of the seat action!
This is an action thriller set in the 1970s with a Black Ops theme in which the main protagonist John Drake is assigned to destroy a sex-trafficking ring. Fast-paced and well-written, it is highly entertaining. story that has an additional thread involving the CIA trying to control Middle East oil companies. Drake is not perfect my any means, and the unfolding of his personal problems provides good character development and understanding of where he is coming from. The scenes are very well described and gave me a real feel for the situations. John Drake reminded me of Jack Bauer in the series '24'. I like a good ending and this one didn't disappoint. Highly recommended.

While the book got off to a slow start, I was soon drawn in and along for the ride. Just a heads up, this was definitely an action adventure, not a thriller. For some reason, after reading the blurb I thought this was a thriller, but once I got into the story, I found the focus was more on the action and adventure than the intrigue (though there was plenty of intrigue). While I was a bit disappointed, I ultimately liked the action adventure angle more, as it worked well here.
The book was also more existential than I was expecting, as it does put some thought into how a cold-blooded assassin is made and the morality of it, rather than just making said assassin. It was a bit unsettling to see glimpses of how Drake became the stony killer, especially when seeing the connection between his personal life and his military life. The level of detail here was unexpected and took this from a 3 star to a 4.
The only thing that kept this from being a 5 for me is because while I loved the realism and detail in Drake's characterization, I also felt that at times, it was unrealistic. Okay, he already has qualities that make being an assassin easier. Fine. But to go from being a regular Joe with violent tendencies to expert assassin right out of basic training? Slightly doubtful. Also, the story did drag a bit at times, but ultimately that wasn't a big problem as I still greatly enjoyed the story. If you're looking for a good action adventure with an interesting lead, I would recommend giving Execution of Justice a read.

Execution of Justice, by Patrick Dent, is an action thriller set in the early 1970s during the oil-crisis, a story that takes the reader behind the scenes of political and power-intrigue, and the manipulation of the oil market. In this story of fast-paced blood and guts, we follow several parallel threads as the daughter of a US senator is kidnapped in Brazil; as American spies sent to ferret out an underworld trafficker start showing up dead; and the development of a secret plot to force the hand of Arab oil-magnates and put America in control of their oil reserves. Lots of twists and turns, bloody encounters, killing and mayhem. Although the outcome seems obvious, it nonetheless draws one to the end of the story to find out what happens, only to discover a twisted-turn of events which no one could have expected.

Execution of Justice by Patrick Dent is simply one of the best books I have had the pleasure to read this year. Action packed, and very well researched, it held my interest from page 1, and had some surprising twists right from the first chapter. I sincerely hope there will be a series revolving around the main characters. I would absolutely highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an action packed, military novel. Well done, Mr. Dent.

Execution of Justice is not a genre I normally read but I’m so glad I did. The well-written story has the perfect balance of action and character development to keep the reader fully engaged and eager to turn the page. The main character, John Drake, is complex and I found myself empathizing with him despite the difficult decisions he had to make. The overarching themes of revenge and forgiveness are woven in beautifully and the action scenes, though gritty and intense, are multi-purposed, serving to move the narrative forward as well as providing further insight into the characters. I’d highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys this genre or who appreciates quality story telling.

A thrilling action story. I really enjoyed the way this story remained intense, while still filling me in on details about what was going on in situations that were foreign to me. Even though I am not well versed in military things, or weapons, or anything of that nature, I felt totally immersed and never confused.
There wasn’t a moment of pause as the story moved forward. There were a few things I didn’t see coming at all. Drake is a broken, reluctant hero, which added to the genuine tension. There was a real sense of uncertainty that kept me flipping pages fast and furious. His motivations were real, powerful, and so heartbreaking. There is a part with his wife that just gutted me. So powerful. The end was perfect, totally satisfying.
If you are a fan of action or military stories this is a must read.

Good solid thriller, nothing new and nothing to wow you but overall it passed the time for me and was narrated well.

For me, this action book started off a little slow. Set in the late sixties, the OPEC oil embargo is in full swing, Nixon is President, and the Vietnam War is in progress. Drake and Gip are likable characters. Both had difficult childhoods. Drake was given a second chance after accidentally killing a boy. The pace and the action pick up considerably in the second half. I particularly liked the banter and strong respect that slowly developed between Drake and Gip over the course of their training and special assignment. There are multiple moral issues that are entwined into the framework of the adventure. I was especially pleased with the final resolution, though it did wrap up a little too neatly. I look forward to more adventures with Drake and Gip.

South Carolina native author Patrick Dent earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and his Masters in Chemistry. He went on to receive Advanced Infantry Training while stationed at Fort Benning. With detailed experience such as this it is no wonder this debut novel is such a fine thriller – opting to include the inside knowledge of political activity with military experience and a depth of knowledge about chemistry. As Patrick adds, ‘In Execution of Justice, I wanted to add deep characterization to the military covert operations genre, exploring concepts such as: revenge vs. forgiveness, universal vs. relative morality, self-discovery and the roots of what makes each of us who we are. Family, abuse, trauma, personal loyalties, betrayals, and patriotic obligations conflict and eventually form the amalgam that is our protagonist, John Drake’
Strong self assigned challenges for a debut novel, but Patrick meets his goals. The tone of the book is apparent from the first paragraphs – ‘Safi, Morocco - The young American did his best to look casual as he approached the Moroccan bar. His eyes constantly scanned for incongruities – anything more interesting than an infinite expanse of sand and about a dozen rugged four-wheel-drive vehicles. He saw none. The bar itself looked ancient, having a wooden frame plastered with a tan adobe, making its color indistinguishable from the surrounding desert. The slate roof appeared on the verge of collapse. The windows were arched and glassless, about twenty feet from the ground, with heavy wooden shutters latched open with hasp locks. Elan had selected attire generic to the region. His tan robes concealed his slightly trembling hands, as well as the Colt .45 automatic in his shoulder holster. Luckily, the desiccating atmosphere evaporated sweat, helping mask his anxiety. The locals called the bar Shaqra, although it bore no markings either outside or in. Elan grabbed the huge iron ring serving as a doorknob and pulled. The thick wooden door eventually surrendered to his will and swung open with a creak, attracting the attention of some of the locals inside. Rheumy, bloodshot eyes turned toward the offending desert sunlight cutting through the dimly lit room, but quickly lost interest when they saw Elan. Elan blinked as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. The main room was large, with about a thirty foot ceiling. The only light had to fight its way from the open windows through thick clouds of hashish, opium and tobacco smoke. The air hung motionless. In the center sat a square bar. A solitary bartender cleaned his fingernails with a US Army issue bayonet. No wait staff was visible. Much to the disappointment of John Drake Sr. (husband/father), & Gloria Drake (wife/mother), Tammy & John got married.
Flashback: Major Briggs assigned Sergeant “Gip” Gibson (US Army Rangers; munitions, E5, Vietnam), & Sergeant John Drake Jr. (US Army Rangers; E5, Vietnam) to Operation Sierra.
Top priority: Tartus (human trafficker) kidnapped the congressman's daughter; Ms. Lupe Hernandez.
Captain Fejo, Jorge (1st. officer), the crew, & their precious cargo aboard the Lady & the Tramp (steamer) were headed for Tarfaya, Morocco.
Gip & John Jr. solicited Felipe for 2 young girls.
Felipe’s torture began. They wanted a name out of him.

38 girls were in their possession that had been taken from Moroccan black marketeers.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written international thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great international thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Are you sitting comfortably?? Then I'll begin.
Once upon a time, there was a reviewer, who read a lot, LOT of books. Before she started reviewing for the blogs, she read mostly horror and crime. But now, it's mostly romance of some description or other.
So when the reviewer had a chance to read something a little out of her comfort zone, she jumped at the chance.
AND WAS BLOWN AWAY!!
Usually there is sex in her books: not so here. There is usually romance: not so here. There are usually nekkid muscly men involved: bar two young recruits to the Army, not so here. She can often see where things are going: not so here.
AGAIN, she was blown away.
The reader found the book took a while to set the scene, it kept her fully engaged, because she got to hear from ALL the major players, and a minor one or two. It took time to present the full picture, and she didn't know which way things would go til they did. She connected with each and every person, loved some guys, and a certain gal, hated some other guys.
The reader did get a little confused at the beginning with the time line involved, because it talks a bit about the oil embargo and the President of the US at the time (but already, the reader has forgotten which one t was!) However, once the reader had late 60's early 70's stuck in her head, things were much better, but the reader is still not entirely clear on that one!
The reader enjoyed this book so much, she read it on one sitting, and its not an EASY read, not at all, but what it is, is a BRILLIANT read. The reader looked to see if she could find any other books by this author, but THIS book appears to be the FIRST book written by this author.
The reader found it carried some difficult story lines, kidnapping and people trafficking mostly but some rape, and drug abuse too. She found it very violent in places but thought it right and proper for this book to have such graphic violence. It NEEDED that in places, to get the point across.
All in all, the reader was so very impressed with this book, she hopes to get a chance to read more by this author.
So the reader could only give this. . . .
5 stars. Because nothing else would do.

Set in the 1970s, this covert operations thriller is a cut above your average military escapade. Although its main plot is fairly simple – tracking down and rescuing a kidnapped congressman’s daughter – it’s the superb characterisation of its star, John Drake, that makes this novel such a riveting read. Right from chapter one, the descriptions are vivid, and thanks to the author’s skilful narrative, the reader feels the locations that the plot visits; take the bar in Morocco for example; “wooden framed and plastered with a tan adobe, it’s color barely distinguishable from the surrounding desert” – with this and other descriptions, you can almost feel the heat and taste the sand in between your teeth.
Drake’s backstory is compelling; we don’t meet him when he’s the highly-trained covert agent that he turns out to be, instead, we are first introduced to him in a college baseball game. It’s during this game that one error of judgement alters the course of his life. We get to witness the evolution of this complex character every step of the way; a man with some scores to settle, including with some friends and one family member, yet constantly battling with his conscience as he goes about his grim business.
There is a side plot involving a scheming US general with a far-fetched plot to wrestle control of the world’s oil away from OPEC, but thankfully, this only occupies a small part of the book and doesn’t detract from Drake’s story. A young man gets into a fight and the other guy ends up dead. John never meant to hurt anyone much less kill the dude. Now John finds himself enlisted in the military where they train you to kill a man and probably on his way to fight in the Vietnam War after boot camp.
After boot camp John and Gip find themselves in Ranger School where they teach you how to keep a man alive. John always assumed that he would end up in Vietnam but after giving it some thought he had rather be in special opps than running around in the jungle in Vietnam.
A US congressmen’s daughter is kidnapped in Brazil while on vacation. She is kidnapped by a sex trafficker who plans on getting a high price for an American. John and Gip are sent in to rescue the congressmen’s daughter along with 37 other girls.
John has a lot of demons from his past that he is living with today. John is aware of this but he just has to figure out how to deal with it in order to be the person that he wants to be and not someone else.
Execution of Justice started off kind of slow for me with so many characters, places and stories. It was all over the place going from one character’s story to another. But then it hit me that all these characters, places and stories were going to intertwine at some point in time. After figuring this out it was on then I couldn’t it put it down. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how they all intertwined and connected. Like the when, why and where sort of thing.
I think John was my favorite character even with all the gory gruesome things he did. He was a tough character but underneath that rough exterior lay a soft compassionate heart.
Execution of Justice is filled with so much adrenaline pumping murder, mystery, suspense action that will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is around the next corner. Execution of Justice is one of the best books I have read this year. This is one book that will stay with me for a long time to come. I would so love to this on the big screen. Execution of Justice would make a great movie.

Military stories of this particular nature have a tendency to sit in a particular rut and run along it in a cliché but good old favourite kind of way, and this is where Patrick Dent takes a stereotype and turns it into something thrilling. Albeit with a somewhat slow beginning, which I tended to sway in different directions too much for my liking, but once this book hit its roll it didn't stop. John Drake is young man with a troubled past who is clearly driven and knows what he wants. Growing up in a difficult household with bad circumstances and a manslaughter charge changing his life, John joins the military. Instead of this rigmarole feeling tedious (which it normally is for me), I was drawn into John’s adaptation and ability to make friends. His story in conjunction with other elements of the plot was drawn away from the traditional military rescue story into a gritty daring mission. In this John’s pursuit of not only justice but cleansing of the sins of the soul makes him a likeable character without pity. One walks away from this story with a kind of admiration for John, despite the perils and difficult content. Though there were a few errors, and had a slow start, once this book’s true objectives sink into you, it’s difficult to put down. There is a triumph of the soul within these pages, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Let me just start by saying that I’m Drake fan and wish this book would turn into a Tv show, a bit under the same style as Jack Bauer. It was very intense and very well-written. The story is packed with action, a lot of military talk and very interesting political conspiracies. It’s a great book and I was really impressed.
The story unfolds well and is quite consistent, offering some pretty solid action sequences that will make you clinch in the chair. The characters are good, they develop well and are quite entertaining. Even if they a bit dark, well, they’re military so I wouldn’t expect anything different. The angle of patriotism and vengeance is strong but a bit unoriginal.
This is a very masculine book. From the characters to the story, to the language used. But if you’re a woman and you fancy action books with political drama, don’t be afraid to try it. I’m sure you won’t regret it.

Execution of Justice is a political adventure book. The book is long and thoroughly engrossing. It revolves around many countries and the underlying atmosphere is grey and gloomy. The stage was set in the first scene itself when an undercover agent visits a ruthless underworld leader amidst harsh setting only to be brutally murdered. The introduction of hero took me by surprise. Earlier a couple of impressive characters were introduced and whole chapters dedicated to them, so when this apparently non-impressive character was introduced it took me sometime to understand the importance of this character with relevance to the story. The story is deep, dark and troubled and paints the picture of a futile world where humanity is at stake and nothing is what as it actually appears. The story would give you goosebumps and keep you on edge but, it would also give you food for thought and make you think about serious world concerns. Awesome work by author Patrick Dent.

Amazingly intense page turner!
This isn’t my normal type of book but a friend said I needed to read it. Normally I’m not into war stories and violence but this book had a raw feeling to it that drug me in. It starts out introducing you to the main character John Drake, he was a young man struggling to figure out who he should be. He ends up following his fathers footsteps and joining the military. The book follows him as he goes from wayward young man to harden soldier. I was drawn to John as a character, Patrick Dent did an amazing job of creating all the characters but John had so much depth and was so personable that I found myself crying and cheering for him through the book. I definitely recommend this book to pretty much anyone looking for a great read that will keep you hooked from the first page!

I liked it. It felt like it was a very slow burner. It kept building up and building up. I was left waiting for it to get anywhere. Boy did it at the end, very action packed. I liked that it was set in the 1970s, it made it different and interesting to read. You learned a little bit of history. (the story and places were fictional) It didn’t really feel like a thriller more of an action adventure.
It was extremely well written and the pace was steady throughout. In some places, I did feel like the Author repeated himself with information he had already mentioned before. It only happened once or twice wasn’t anything bad. More of a reminder than anything.
It was split into different parts. You didn’t just follow the main character. It took you a while to realise that it was all linked in some way.

The covert actions of the two main characters of this book intrigued me. There were gaps I recognized as necessary to the story. Nonetheless some of the credibility of the story diminished in my mind even though I liked it a lot overall. The CIA agent involvement and the putative plan of the CIA to involve the U.S. in a war with Saudi Arabia intrigued me as well. An interesting concept to be sure, and original. I will not tell you the details of the story since it would spoil your read. Suffice it to say that the story line is excellent, the characters are deep enough to be believable, the meshing of the two is done well, there are no major errors in the story which would denigrate its entertainment value. Five stars, easy.

Action packed emotional journey
Execution of Justice: Covert Ops Military Assassination Thriller follows John Drake, a young pacifist who grew up with an abusive father, on 2 journeys. These journeys overlap in a way that makes the reader feel for the young man.
John had to undergo quite a large transformation in order to become the man he needed to become. I don't want to give away any spoilers but I will say that I loved the way that Johns personal and professional journeys overlapped to help hom grow into a strong and confident young man. I hope I get to read more about the world of John Drake soon.

A great action-packed read! While growing up with a controlling and abusive father, John Drake is involved in an unfortunate encounter that changes the direction of his life. Required to serve time in the military, he was soon offered a special op's position that he could not refuse. Teamed with one of his comrades, the two are assigned to a rescue mission thats takes them to Morocco where they are involved in several very intense situations.
This is a good read for anyone who likes military action stories.

John Drake is our main charachter who is the hero of the journey even though he doesn't seek that. The story is fast paced and a thrill at every turn. The characters are well developed and the story takes you back to the childhood of our hero which gives some understanding to why he does the things he does. I love action stories and this one is definitely at the top of the list. I suggest checking this one out and then come back here and share what you thought of the story. Great read that meets and exceeds every expectation.

This was a very enjoyable read that I couldn't stop until I finished. There was not a moment of boredom in this novel. There was simply too much exciting stuff going on from the inner demons John was fighting, the kidnapping of young women, the secret deals of CIA. Hold your breathe as Dent will take you on a fun and breathless ride. If you like action, murder, intrigue this book is for you. It was like watching an episode of 24.

Patrick Dent's Execution of Justice is an efficiently written story about John, a young man whose personal history of victimization and betrayal influences his involvement in a covert ops Army Ranger mission. Working alone with a trusted friend and training-associate, he struggles with regret and fears for those he loves.
I liked this story, and most-importantly, I felt invested in the main character's well-being.

An exciting novel from Patrick Dent that is filled with razor sharp tension, good action sequences, and perfectly flawed characters who revel in their roles. The book is aptly titled 'Covert Ops', but is in need of tighter editing and I'll probably PM the author privately about these. Overall Execution of Justice delivers on a number of levels and can be recommended as top notch military writing.

This was a fast-moving action-adventure plot with two main storylines. The stories were well-told and compelling, with one finishing happily and one not. Although there was much death and carnage throughout, the protagonist, John Drake, Jr., was flawed, but fascinating and sympathetic to follow. I assume the author will continue his story in later volumes. The book could have used a better editor, as several mistakes stood out. I will look forward to reading more by this author.

This book consists of unimaginable torture performed as part of covert operations to recover several women who were kidnapped for use in a human trafficking enterprise. The heroism portrayed covered up deep animosity caused by a troubled home life ruled by a mean, domineering father. While the violence was down played, it existed alongside the conflict it created within the main character. The outcome was unexpected and inspiring.
