My best friend is hung… too bad he’s an a**hole. Henry broke my heart years ago. I never forgave him for what he did. But now I have my dream job, and it turns out we’ll be working together. He’s even hotter than I remembered. And he still wants me. I need to resist that delicious jerk’s charm.
What a huge mess. Back in high school, we were inseparable. Henry was my best friend and a little bit more.
But he broke my heart. One day we were close, and the next he was ignoring me in the halls.
Fast forward ten years. I just landed my dream job working for an online news organization. It’s my chance to report on serious issues.
Except I’ll be working very closely with Henry.
He’s the producer on my first story. I never thought I’d see him again. But he’s back, and he’s all grown up: cocky grin, muscular body, hands that have a ton of experience. I can’t stop picturing all those nights we used to undress each other in the dark.
I need to keep it professional. But Henry isn’t making that easy.
He wants me again. And he’s not being subtle about it. If I give in to him, I know I’m going to need more than just one night.
I’m in for the best mistake of my life.
Best Friend With Benefits is a steamy romance with hot scenes and bad language. It’s only recommended for readers 18+.
Best Friend With Benefits is a STANDALONE, full-length novel. No cliffhanger. Guaranteed HEA. Includes bonus content!
Vivian and Henry dated for a few years in high school until one day he suddenly broke up with her without giving a reason. Henry became cold and distant to Viv, breaking her heart further. Going their separate ways after high school, it isn’t until 10 years later that they meet again. Vivian has just been hired as a journalist for a respected internet news site. After uprooting her entire life and moving to a new city, it is too late to back out once she meets her new producer, Henry, the boy that got away.
This book was hard to get into, which is surprising for a B.B. Hamel book. The plot moves slow and I had to force myself to keep reading. The characters say that they have feelings for each other, but their behavior makes them seem indifferent rather than in love. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Henry and Viv, making the intimacy boring. Speaking of sex scenes, can B.B. Hamel write a single story without the hero calling the heroine ‘girl’ whilst dirty-talking? Anytime I read it I’m reminded of 90’s boy bands.
Not sexy to me.
There were way too many typos to ignore. I did read an ARC copy, but I also downloaded the published book from Amazon and found that most of the mistakes were still there, so I’m including it in my review.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5⭐ This is a second chance romance between Henry and Vivian. Henry broke Vivian's heart 10 years ago when he abruptly dumps her and gives her the child shoulder. Now Vivian has a new job working as a reporter for/with ... drumroll.... Henry. They go to Alabama for assignment and are forced to address the past. I liked the story and the sex scenes were steamy AF but I felt like there was potential for more in the plot while they were on assignment. The build up was suspenseful, but that was it, which was a let down for me. I kept expecting some dark force and when there wasn't really any, I was disappointed.

What I liked: Loved the way these two former high school sweethearts found their way back to each other. Loving one's best friend and getting a second chance together is all swoony romance for me. The two of them were just right together -- you could feel just how much they cared for each other -- and the reason for their long-ago misunderstanding was pretty flimsy but still believable. Something that would hurt, but not permanently damage the goodwill between them.
Henry's voice as a field producer was especially believable. I don't know Hamel's background, but even with my limited TV production experience, I could buy the idea that Henry really worked in field production and knew what he was talking about. Vivian's work as a journalist was less obviously authentic, especially the descriptions of how she interviewed. But Henry I believed.
To some extent, I felt as if there was too much plot before the sexy times happened -- Vivian felt betrayed by Henry when they were teen lovers, and they had to get to know each other again before anything romantic could happen. So I understand why Hamel included a particularly dirty prologue to tide readers over...even though that prologue doesn't fit anywhere else in the narrative of the book (maybe it's a dream?). But the story was important and worth reading. I just wish Hamel had introduced other diversions (it is a romance novel, after all!) for the reader until Vivian and Henry get together.
I also like that this book dealt with the opioid crisis that is a reality in our current world. I'm starting to see more novels that tackle pill/opioid addiction, and I think in the frame of this particular plot (Vivian's a journalist exploring the aftermath of a small town destroyed by opioids) really helps show the consequences and danger of these drugs to readers who may not even have thought about them.
What I didn't like: As soon as they hit the bedroom...or any other place they decided to get it on, Vivian and Henry turned into some caricature of filthy pornstars. Lots of very explicit dirty talking, like "watch me wreck this c**t" and so on. Now, I get that plenty of people seem straitlaced and proper in public but enjoy peeling paint off the walls with their dirty talk when they're between the sheets. But this was excessive. And the 180 from their non-sexy parts was unbelievable. And it was even more unbelievable when Vivian and Henry referred to their own body parts as if they were pornstars. Vivian describes her own vagina as a "tight little p**sy, while Henry describes her "riding my huge d*ck."
Am I opposed to dirty talk? No. Not at all. But it didn't seem to fit the characters whatsoever -- especially the way they both dove right into it the first time. We know that Vivian and Henry knew each other when they were much younger, in high school, so maybe they were both into dirty talk back then, but I dunno. I found it jarring that two people would both behave so primly one moment and then let loose with such a stream of explicit description.
I think I would've rated this book higher because of the high-level plot and showcasing of the opioid crisis, but Vivian and Henry's out-of-character about-faces into scorching-hot, lewd porn bunnies was so unbelievable (and...narcissistic?) that it became a turn-off.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
He is a producer, a very popular one. He didn't think that was what he was going to do with his life, but a very special girl from his past helped him make this decision. Only problem is she probably hates Henry for what he did. It was for her own good, but it still hurt him to do it, and worse he knew how much he hurt her. Today is a day he never thought would happen, so why is he the one so nervous?
She had someone in her life when she was younger, someone who meant all to her. As the years have gone by and time has lessened the hurt supposedly, Vivian applies for a reporting job, and gets it. She is on her way to that new job to start her first day. Jitters before walking in to the building, but something far stronger after being introduced to everyone.
Vivian went off to school at Harvard, a bit reluctantly and very heartbroken. But the old saying of time healing all wounds did not really happen and now here she is, her first day as a reporter and she comes face to face with him....the one that threw her away....Henry, Why did he still look so damned hot? Now to make it harder to hide her feelings, she is told they will be working together very closely and it starts immediately.
Henry has never forgotten or forgiven himself for what he did, but he really did do this for Vivian's sake. As crappy as that sounds, he couldn't let her throw her life away on him. So he helped her make up her mind, go to Harvard. He thought he would make it easier for her, instead he has regretted that decision every day. To make it harder on him, he learns moments before she comes in that she will be working there, and with him.
Working together on this assignment seemed to be hard, a bit cold, but it was at least something. Henry and Vivian have never lost their chemistry but she is angry and he is going to try to get her to understand. Things take turns here and there, and some become very scary and dark. They have a moment together and it is like nothing changed and yet all of it has gotten better. The morning hits and there is a misunderstanding between how things end up. Now the anger fuels in Vivian again.
This assignment is getting scarier and a whole lot more dangerous. Henry hires bodyguards as Vivian refuses to leave, again so Henry can protect her. Now the danger level spikes, as does their giving into their needs with one another. Twists and turns are everywhere, and yet they find themselves together and better for it. There is a lot of things that happen, gang threats, drugs around them, people saying they will talk with them and suddenly change their mind. There is also coworkers that push limits, love in the air, bantering, apologies and finally understanding for all those years ago, and then admiration and love rekindled. All taking them through the wild ups and downs and into their happily ever after.
Another enthralling book from this author and certainly one I would have no hesitation in recommending. The story centres around Vivian and Henry and tells how one decision during their childhood makes an impact on their future lives, but also eventually gives them a second chance at happiness.
Henry realises that if he doesn’t break up with Vivian she will never go to Harvard, thereby losing the chance of a lifetime; for Henry it was the ultimate sacrifice, but for Vivian it was a broken heart. Now ten years later, Vivian has landed her dream job working for WBN; giving her a chance to report on serious issues. Vivian is surprised when she finds out Henry is a producer working for the same company; this only reminds her about their past and how angry she still is with him. Vivian’s first assignment is to report on an opioid epidemic, and while this is not Henry’s usual type of assignment, he and his crew accompany Vivian to Sellersville. Drugs and violence are destroying the town and people are living in fear of the Strips, the gang responsible for the stranglehold over the town; this is a dangerous assignment that needs to be handled sensitively. While Henry and his team have been in dangerous situations before, Vivian has not and Henry doesn’t want to see any harm come to her. As Vivian and Henry start working closely together, they rekindle their undeniable attraction for each other, making it difficult to keep things strictly professional. Henry senses how strong and skilled Vivian is during her interviews, drawing out the right answers from vulnerable people, but when interviews begin to get cancelled, it soon becomes apparent that the Strips are involved somehow; their intimidation being enough to put people off. Without support, the story is never going to be written, but at the last minute the team get the break they are looking for. It may be too late for Sellersville, but not for other towns with a similar problem. I really enjoyed this story and the extra twists and turns made it quite an exciting read. A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
Wonderful, steamy, yet romantic story of a second chance! Best Friend with Benefits by BB Hamel is a must buy for your next beautiful fall weekend! Picture yourself on a lounger, with a glass of wine and Best Friend with Benefits by BB Hamel on your reading tablet! You will have everything you need to take a wild and steamy ride through the lives of some field reporters who are on-location to film a documentary which deals with the effect that drugs have made in the lives of the people in one small town in Alabama. Former drug addicts, families who have suffered because of drug use or the death of the drug user, intimidation from the gang who is selling the drugs are all a part of the secondary story that will keep you spell-bound and turning pages well into the wee hours. The main plotline, however; is the one which can answer two questions. Will the childhood friends, Vivian and Henry, repair their painful past, and will the repair be enough to let them have a future? In this romance reader’s humble opinion, BB Hamel is a master communicator. The characters are developed as part of the story rather than being told. Instead of stating that he/she is stubborn, Hamel gives us the evidence (actions in a scene or two) to show us that stubbornness. Additionally, the angst of the characters is subtle, realistic and not page after page of repetitive bleh . . . The plot lines are compelling, keeping the reader interested in what happens next, and complex enough that the reader must pay attention. Best Friend with Benefits by BB Hamel is not really a mystery or thriller, but it has those elements. It is a GREAT second-chance romance with plenty of steamy scenes and a wonderfully dramatic HEA. Get your copy today! Happy pages! 😉
Henry and Vivian were boyfriends in high school, but he mysteriously leaves her, it break her heart and she decides to go to the University in another state just to get away from him, little would know that after 10 years the twists of fate would make them reunite, she as journalist and he as her producer.
The old love that was latent in their relationship returns to appear now that they are adults, and despite having grown up, discover that they still have much in common, their ideals and life goals are special, but they decide to restrain their impulses due to the employment relationship.
I mainly liked that this story was quite different from what we have been accustomed to BB Hamel, it was a story more focused on the stories of the characters and the development of the journalistic note than about jumping one over the bones of the other.

Awesome book about second chances. Vivian was a reporter who had just started a new job in Philadelphia to work for a news network where she could report something of consequences not just fluff. Henry was already working there as a producer. Henry had dumped Vivian when they were still in high school. Vivian had been heartbroken. They are to work on a story in Alabama about how Fentanyl had torn a small town apart. This book has suspense, truths about drugs and gangs, hot sexy scenes, twist, lust, danger, and love. Will Vivian forgive Henry? Will Henry win Vivian over? Will they be able to work together? Grab this book and start reading. BB shows her vast talent by building her characters into people we can relate to and building the plot so that they intertwine. This books covers a very serous matter and she built sexy scenes into it. She has entertained us and got an important message out too. Thank you BB for joining the fight against drugs and gangs in the United States. I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
Vivian and Henry grew up together. Henry's home life was chaotic, due to an abusive mother. He spent time with Vivian to escape being at home. It wasn't until they got older, that the two realized they were more than friends. So they began dating. But by senior year of high school, Henry suddenly breaks up with Vivian. Vivian has always had an interest in reading news stories and journalism. Henry was her biggest supporter and encouraged Vivian to go to college and pursue her dream career. Following the break-up, Vivian gets accepted into Harvard. And she and Henry go their separate ways. Ten years later, they are reunited when Vivian starts a new job. She's the reporter. Henry is her producer. They have to work together on a very serious story concerning opioid addiction. Will they be able to table their past and work together and get the job done?
You must buy the book to find out.

In this book we meet Henry and Vivian Cross. Henry and Vivian are old friends and somewhat lovers. In their senior year of high school though out of the blue Henry breaks up with Vivian breaking her heart. She never expected to see him again but when she gets a new job there he is. When Henry learns that it will be Vivian coming in as the new reporter he knows he has to see her again. He wonders if he can have a second chance or the mistake he made in high school burn that bridge beyond compare. Can these two find a way back to one another or will they loose more than just an old friendship on this assignment?
This book is amazing it shows us that sometimes there is a second chance. There are quite a few ups and downs in this book that I want to tell you all about. I refuse to spoil a book for any other readers though so I have keep it brief. I will say this book will grab you from the first page and not let go till the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
rvcd an advanced reader copy for giving my two cents. it was a good read with lots of drama, past and recent along with figuring out ones feelings. i felt the name of the book didnt jive with the storyline. we meet vivian, harvard grad in journalism, starting a new job in Philly only to come face to face with Henry, the boy who broke her heart. henry is a producer in Philly and loves his job. he is told by his boss about a new employee and bam...its vivian. he broke her heart back in high school and was a world class prick to her about it....he had his reasons and now she is back in his life. they end up going to Alabama to get the scoop on teh small town turning into a drug haven of fentanyl. both are struck by each others professionalism and ability to do the job right. however, the gang that sells the opiods is threatening them and all henry can do it keep vivian safe....but at what cost? will they get their story? will vivian learn the truth from henry?
Realistic Story About Sacrifice And Second Chances
Henry and Vivian meet and become close friends when they are both ten. Henry is from a broken home, and his friendship with Vivian is important to him. They eventually date for a few years, until Henry suddenly breaks up without explanation midway through their senior year of high school, breaking Vivian's heart.
At age twenty-eight, neither has settled down or had a serious relationship, and both work in the journalism industry. When Vivian takes a new job in a new city, she finds herself face to face with Henry, and is informed that he will be working with her as her producer on assignment. They go to Alabama to investigate the opioid crisis, but soon find themselves in danger. As they work their story, old feelings are reawakened.
The tone and subject matter in this story is serious, and the characters feel real. I would give this 4.5 stars if possible. The HEA is satisfying.
This second chance romance features Vivian and Henry, high school sweethearts of two years when Henry broke things off and went cold on her. They’d been best friends for years before they dated in high school. Only best friends would make the choices their young selves tried to make-giving up your future potential, and giving up love.
Fast forward several years and they are both working for the same news company. They’ve never forgotten each other. Their current dangerous assignment throws them together but can what they’re feeling extend to the real world? This was a fast-paced read, with strong, noble, forgiving leads, fun secondary characters (Pat the old bat!), and a bit of danger to spice things up. Great afternoon read if you like dirty talkin’ heroes.
I received an arc of this book and have voluntarily reviewed it.
One smirky, alpha'd field producer Henry found out the girl he had loved more than anything but had to break her heart -Vivian is the new reporter for the WBN - finding out what her first assignment will be he weasels his way into being the producer. This may be his one chance to right the wrongs of the past- he is not going to blow it! **Check Please! ** Listen, I don't even know what to say other than mmm that was yummy! Ok, so that was more of a meal description- but phew- these Journalist exes are a combustible pair when they are together! LOVED IT! This hot as the sun, fast moving thrilling but fun ride, "danger Will Robinson" style, read was a page turner I had no intentions of putting down! B.B. Hamel created a second chance romance with a twist I will not forget anytime soon! #oneclickmatrial
Another great read from B.B. Hamel! When Vivian starts her new job in a new town the last thing she thought she would find was the boy her wrecked her heart all grown up and working at the same World Beats News as she is, and now he's going to be her producer on location in Alabama. When Henry broke Vivian's heart before they left for college he did with the best of intentions and yet it's the one thing he regrets. Now given a second chance he will start with being friends if that's what it takes. While on location covering a story about opiod addiction they will find that connection they had back in the day and will have to survive the danger they find themselves in when the local gang doesn't take too kindly to them digging their noses into their business. This is my first read from BB Hamel and I loved it. This is a second chance love story. Vivian and Henry were high school sweethearts. She thought they would be together forever but Henry had other plans. He did the whole "if you love them set them free" deal. He didn't want her to miss out on opportunities in life. She never forgave him. Fast forward years later and they find themselves working at the same news outlet and working closer together. Now that Henry has her, he's not letting go of her.
This was a beautifully written story. The set of their relationship and the pace of how everything happened made it all believable. At first I didn't want to like Henry but I do get why he did what he did. Vivian was a strong, smart character. The things I liked to see in my heroines. Such a great read.
I’ve read another book by this author and didn’t have any problems so I was quite surprised that this book was as bad as it was. The writing was very choppy and hard to read and there was NO chemistry whatsoever between Henry and Vivian. I’m a sucker for a second chance romance but this one let me down, big time. The storyline seemed to just drag on and I felt that by the end I was just skimming, I was that bored.
The book stops at 33% and then the rest is made up of two completely different books (that are not my cup of tea). While I appreciate “bonus content”, meaning an excerpt for the next book in the series or whatever, I don’t appreciate being sold one thing and given something completely different. This is one of those free or .99 books where to a gamble, unfortunately this one was a loss.
Another sexy story from BB Hamel that is worth reading. The drama is exciting, intriguing and at time intense. It is about a very serious social issue, opioid addiction that Henry, Vivian and their crew wish to expose with hopes that they can help bring light to and help stop the epidemic.
The second chance at romance part between Henry and Vivian is equalling exciting and intense. I love that once they get together, they don't go back and forth with their feelings. Henry puts it out there about his feelings for Vivian and Vivian accepts and acknowledges her own feelings for Henry.
I recommend this suspensful romance especially for love that never goes out and fatefully gets another chance.
I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
This is a fun read with a touch of danger, and much to say about drug addiction and its effects on the community.
The descriptions of a dying town are well written, as are the inhabitants who have long given up hope.
Vivian and Henry are engaging characters, and their dialogue is sparkling.
The secondary characters are believable, and the story moves in a convincing arc.
The danger comes from a gang and there are some truly tense moments.
The love between Henry and Vivian is still alive after 10 years, despite the way they split up. There are some steamy scenes that lead the reader to hope, that perhaps, they'll get a HEA.
Wow! This is such a powerful story!! BB Hamel really makes you feel the emotions throughout this book. It also gives you a gritty look at what has happened to so many small towns in the US. The chemistry between Vivian and Henry is so strong! This is more than just a romance but the love is evident. A truly great read that you cannot pass by! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book. Hero, Henry = 5/5 Heroine, Vivian = 5/5 Chemistry = 5/5 Sex = 5/5 Plot = 4/5 Mystery = 1/5 Action = 2/5 Darkness = 3/5 Humor = 1/5 POV = dual Would I recommend this book = yes Would I re-read this book = yes Would I read future books by this author = yes
3.5 star story, I like ex's reunited and this is right there on the money. High school sweethearts, Viv was planning their life after high school even passing the chance at Harvard, so he did something he regretted instantly and pissed at himself for years. Now what are the odds Vivian, his old girlfriend got a new job where he works... I hate to say my low ranking is because this was predictable. Had some drug mystery in a small town where Vivian got her first assignment, gangs, killing, people scared and an old lady that dont take any crap. The sex when from sweet to bondage with dirty alpha talking.
I love the books written by this author and have read a lot of them. This was what I've come to expect, well written, good storyline with likeable characters. A second chance romance between old teenager sweethearts Vivian and Henry. Both now journalists and end up working together on a story about drugs destroying a town. There is off cause some drama and suspense while going up against the local gangs and plenty of Steamy scenes. This wasn't my favourite by this author, but I'm unable to put my finger on why. It was still a very enjoyable book and well worth reading I received a ARC and am leaving a voluntary review
I received this book in advance for a voluntary honest review. BB Hamel truly never disappoints me. Henry and Vivian were high school sweethearts until Henry broke Vivian's heart and dumped her at the end of senior year. Fast forward to the present and Henry is a successful news producer and Vivian just got hired to work for the same news company as Henry. Unable to help himself he demands to be the producer of her first assignment. Close quarters, unfinished business and love that never went away bring these two back together in this sweet and steamy story about sacrifice and love. Great read!
Viv is a reporter and is going to work for a new company. She gets assigned to a story about a little town in Alabama that's gone to pot because of the opioid epidemic. Her producer turns out to be Henry, a guy she loved when she was younger. They get into some trouble getting to get the story because no one will talk to them. That is until they meet Pat, an older lady ready to tell the truth about what's going on. Pat enlists the help of some of her family for Viv to interview for the story. Some hairy things happen but they get what they were after and they also get their HEA.
Wow...what a read!! Hamel does it again with a sexy, well-written book. Vivian and Henry dated for 2 years in high school and suddenly he wanted nothing to do with her. Heartbroken and confused, Vivian couldn't wait to leave town. Now it's many years later and Vivian has found her dream job, a reporter for WNB and she gets to go out on assignment for her first job! Then she learns Henry not only works there but will be her producer! great read!
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read.
I so love a good Second Chance Romance! This one was amazing. Henry and Vivian have history together as teens. She remembers him ripping her heart out and the pain is has never healed. The two must work together on a drug epidemic story. What they discover is that they still have feelings for one another and that they are also in danger while writing this story! I thought the story was thrilling and intense with the story that they are covering and how they handle the danger. Henry and Vivian were amazing characters and how I loved how they reconnected.
This is a second chance love story. Vivian and Henry were friends back in high school who ended up becoming a couple that were in love. One day Henry broke her heart for all the right reasons and Vivian was heartbroken. years later their lives cross again working for the same company and their old feelings are back. While on a dangerous assignment they fear for their lives. Can Henry make up for his past and will Vivian forgive him. This a well written story and the characters are full of life. Henry and Vivian were best friends in childhood and sweethearts, until one day Henry broke Vivian’s heart. Now years later they end up working together, but will they be able to overcome their shared past and move on? No spoilers; this is an absolute must read, you will not be disappointed. This is a well written fast paced story, which had me intrigued and captivated from the very beginning. This is one of my favourite authors, and I cannot recommend her work enough for all readers. Awesome work as always! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book!
