He who possesses the Spear may command armies, but he can’t control love… With reports of the Spear of Destiny surfacing in a newly discovered Nazi vault, Gabriel Drake sets out to retrieve it. He’s a vampire Guardian with a sworn duty to protect mankind. But recovering the Spear leads him to the rescue of intelligent and irresistible Dr. Julia Barnes, the foremost historian on the relic, and now Gabriel must guard her too if he wants to verify the spear.
Julia Barnes doesn’t care about being kidnapped. Her only passion in life is the Spear of Destiny - until she meets Gabriel. He might be a sexy secret agent, but he is determined to take the Spear from her, and Julia refuses to part with it no matter how much he makes her pulse race.
Yet with the relic in their possession, the gravest danger now lies ahead. A powerful immortal covets the ancient artefact and kills without conscience in his quest to obtain it. They race from Europe to the US, but can they really outrun an invincible enemy? Or must Julia sacrifice everything, including her humanity and the brooding vampire that holds her heart, to keep the Spear safe?
When the same plot advances through the novels, but each book has a nearly complete different cast of characters. This is the case with this series. There are some characters from the first novel who make short appearances in this one, but almost all the main characters of this novel are new, or were hit players in the previous book.
I rather like this approach to completing a long story arc; it emphasizes the fact that few great endeavours are accomplished by a single person. Teamwork is essential for us to make anything of enduring value and this type of story telling illustrates that universal truth quite well. The fact that this is a well written paranormal romance just makes the implications more subtle than other types of literature might.
This novel could be read as a stand alone book, but it would definitely give some spoilers on the preceding novel's plot, if read first, so would strongly recommend reading _Immortal Blood_ first.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. I felt like this book and its characters were not as well developed as Lachlan and Ivy, but that is not to say that I was not still enthralled with Gabriel and Julia. I find the story line interesting and am looking forward to seeing exactly what Joseph and the Immortal are up too. Overall, I would recommend this book
Hot passion and fast paced fantasy. Un-put-downable! I'm a bit of a history nerd so this series is just brilliant. Packed with historical facts and yet total action adventure too. It's like the Da Vinci Code with Tomb Raider, if Lara Croft was into vampires.
I liked this book because it has a surprisingly romantic storyline. It seems to almost be a spy novel as the action heats up but the romance was great. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Enjoyed Book 2 as much as the first. Strong characters. Women who don't play games. So many of the heroines are fake, not able to make decisions and act like teens. Sure hope you do a book on the Guardians getting the Immortal.
This was a fun read. Gabriel has some very warped ideas about life and has generated cold. His last comes back to bite him and Julia is there for all of it. I do wish Julia had more backbone but she improves as the story goes on.
