Started off great. Sad these weren't actual episodes of Doctor Who. By the end, I got a little tired of every alien being from a forgotten empire that almost destroyed the universe.

But this team did a great job capturing the whole asshole aspect of the Twelfth Doctor. I could almost hear the Scottish.

12e doctor >>>>>>>>>>

This is a huge, beautiful, full color collection of the first year of Doctor Who comics from the 12th Doctor. There are 7 main stories in here, and all of them are plot driven, true to character, and make sense within the Who-niverse. Clara is just as brave and witty as ever, and the Doctor as grumpy and brilliant as ever. The stories include: Terror Former, The Swords of Okti, Fractures, Gangland, The Body Electric, The Hyperion Empire, and The Toymaker. My favorite in this set was The Swords of Okti, as it dealt with Indian mythology, lost swords, and an opportunistic, evil race of aliens. My least favorite was Gangland, as it took place in Las Vegas in the 60's and involved Frank Sinatra and his gang. If you're a fan of the Rat Pack, you would probably enjoy it. The stories varied in length, some only a few pages long and others took up a large chunk of the book itself. Most of the alien races mentioned were new to me, with a few nods tossed in, such as the Judoon and the Toymaker (a villain from the 1rst Doctor days). If you're a fan of new Who, I'd highly recommend picking up this collection. I had so much fun and easily got lost in the pages.

QUOTES: Robbie Morrison & Dave Taylor, “Terrorformer”
Doctor: “You humans have become a little too obsessed with your own image. … It's just packaging.”

Doctor: “Money, Clara! Obscene amounts of money. More money than sense … I hate money!”

Doctor: “The company you keep leaves much to be desired.”

Doctor: “So's integrity.”

Doctor: “If you're scared, find a sofa to hide behind. There's one around somewhere. It won't save you, but people seem to find it comforting.”

QUOTES: Robbie Morrison & Dave Taylor, “The Swords of Kali”

Doctor: “To hell with heroes! All they do is make you believe in them, then let you down.”

Doctor: “Man loves woman. Man loves man. Woman loves woman. Who cares? People hating each other, that's what bothers me. That's when the trouble starts.”

Doctor: “The thrill of knowing people usually outweighs the pain of losing them.”

QUOTES:
Clara: “... Coal Hill School, the time I left – I've got an English class, remember?”
Doctor: “English? Your vocabulary's pretty primitive, but I don't think you need to take lessons.”
Clara: “I'm the teacher!”
Doctor: “Oh, well, it's a lost cause then. Your pupils are pathologically incapable of communicating without some 'social media' interface. ...”
Clara: “... I'll be grey-haired by the time I get back.”
Doctor: “What's wrong with grey hair? Grey hair's great. Gives you gravitas. You can never have too much gravitas.”

Interesting to see that the concept of a 'gate' to another dimension (and “stepping into the void”) was used in the 1996 movie “Star Gate” is what Paul Foster uses to travel from his universe into this one because of reverse-engineering the same gate that the cybermen used the Battle of London in 2007, referencing the Doctor Who TV episodes Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. {See more below}

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor # 11

DOCTOR WHO: The Twelfth Doctor. Vol.3: HYPERION (collecting Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor # 11-15)

“Unearthly Things”

Fun short comic.

Clara: “Evil spirits? Alien hive intelligence?”
Doctor: “More the LATTER than the FORMER, I'd guess. Ghosts and demons tend to be the alien equivalent of decent historical camouflage … but something took possession of that man, and I suspect it's linked to the FEVER.”

Lady (Charlotte): “And I finally have an idea for my BOOK … about a SCHOOLMISTRESS, a BEGRUDGING HERO and dark, hidden secrets...
Doctor: “... hold on, what's your name again?
Lady: “CHARLOTTE! I thought you'd know by now!”
Doctor: “Your SURNAME.”
Lady: “BRONTE. Charlotte Bronte ...”
Clara: “HA! Oh, come on, MR DOC-CHESTER. Time for fish and chips with a sea view.”

“The Hyperion Empire”

Plenty of humor in the crazy London crisis.

Cory refers to Chris Hadfield who is an astronaut on the ISS. “I became an astronaut 'cause I wanted to be Captain Kirk or Han Solo – not Justin Bieber!”

“Another beer, Andy?” - fisherman

“You know me, I always draw a crowd. Though one of these days it'd be nice if it was a crowd that WASN'T trying to kill me.” - Doctor
“What can I say? The POWER went to my head. That's the trouble with power. Sneaks up and tickles your fancy. Before you know it, you're a tyrant.” - Doctor's sarcasm.

The actions of the hyperions to drain suns of their solar energy and leaving the worlds that dependent on it as frozen wastelands is EXACTLY what happens in the early 20th century written Sci-Fi novel 'THE 'STAR STEALERS'.

“Winter is coming!”

Sam refers to the TARDIS's interior dimensions as, “It's like Narnia, or Monty Python, or the craziest Roald Dahl story ever!”
The Doctor claims, “Ah, Roald. Now there was a man with a DARK sense of humor.”
Clara comments, “Darker than YOURS?”
Doctor replies, “Only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They're my carefree days.”

The quality of the stories is a bit all over the place (especially since this is an omnibus), but that's okay because that's Doctor Who works. I love me some 12 and, while I would've preferred an original companion for the comics like they gave 10 and 11, I like Clara well enough. The art's a bit of a mess at times, but the whole package is a lot of fun.

Titan's art (poor Kate looks over 60 in a lot of panels!) and storylines can be a bit iffy but the dialogue was incredibly true to S8, with a decent thread of call backs and foreshadowed themes and references throughout. Having london near totally obliterated with no obvious sight of consequences was annoying though.

I didn't know if I was going to like this because Doctor Who comics are pretty much hit or miss. But this one was a hit for sure. The art is easy on the eyes and the plots were not confusing. It has pretty strong story lines and everything wrapped up quite nicely.

Felt like a series of the show set between series 8 and 9. There's a decent through line across the first 15 issues and the 16th is a great Christmas special which fittingly plays with the medium of comics. Almost all of the original monsters are great. The historicals are fun and so is the sci fi.

gorgeous, gorgeous artwork. some stories here were better than some of the tv episodes, and definitely better than the tenth doctor collection.
