This account of the events and circumstances leading up to the June 14th, 2017 Grenfell Tower fire and the chaotic and multi-stranded response to it over the following days and weeks has been put together from the mass of publicly-available information. Collating some 260 media, institutional and individual accounts it paints a picture of a terrible fire that was, and should have been preventable, and describes the experiences of residents, and the uncomprehending stupidity and inadequacy of both central and local government in the face of the fire.
It looks at the heroic response of some individuals, the massive flood of community support and charitable relief efforts, and then the gradual introduction of a proper and relevant response by the institutions that initially failed the Grenfell victims, survivors and evacuees.
The public inquiry and the Met Police investigation will continue for many months, with the public inquiry intending to publish initial findings by Easter 2018. The Met Police inquiry could take years.
This book is intended to provide a provisional account of the fire and its surrounding circumstances and draw what initial conclusions it can about the likely causes and the people and institutions responsible for it.
