I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Saving Her by R.R. Banks. 4 stars. Standalone.
So... it took me a while to finish this book 'cause of some stuff going on but, it was a light reading. I enjoyed the characters and their roll in the book. This book is about a woman that was sold by her parents to a religious cult but, it's not that simple, this cult was run by an abusive, murderer, pedophile man. He ran this facility brainwashing the "weak ones" with promises of drugs and money, louring the ones who needed more help into that facility that, once you were in, you no longer could get out. This man used his power in there to abuse and use young girls as sex slaves, which he called them "wives" (they were thirteen!!). So, in the beginning of this book, I was a little impressed with the dark subject presented. It took me a while to get used to some dark stuff brought in this book but, I understood that it was necessary to show this point of view.
Calee was one of this man "wives" and a few years after they married, she was pointed "Fruitless", which put her aside and no longer as Raymond's wife. So, in between, Raymond found out she was pregnant with another man's baby and then Calee realized how in danger she and her baby was. That was when she was able, with a little help, to escape. And, this was how she met Eric, the most amazing guy who helped her to the end.
So, this book shook me a little with the dark side of this world, the side we try so much to unsee and hide. R.R. Banks usually writes more lighten books but this one was deep and raw. It showed that even in the darkest scenarios, there's light and happiness. Calee and Eric found each other when they needed the most and they completed each other in pieces they didn't even know it was missing. It was beautiful to witness their love growing and how he did everything in his power to protect and to save her.
It was a beautiful story, with some dark subjects, but it resulted in a beautiful HEA. I recommend. :)
DNF at chapter six How am I suppose to like two characters who were already sleeping with someone else from the beginning, this book is a mess. Also, it discusses things I'm not interested in knowing anything about, like cult and how they punish women and I'm definitely not in the mood for this.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This might be the fastest I’ve ever DNF’d a book in my life. My previous record was 13% of the story. I DNF’d this one at 3%. Here’s why:
1. At only 3% into the story, I’ve already read very detailed sex scenes between the heroine and a dude who wasn’t the hero, and the hero with a chick who wasn’t the heroine. That would be fine in erotica, but this is romance. Now, I’m not saying I expect the hero and heroine to come into the story all pure and virginal, because I don’t. But I’m not really interested in reading sex scenes between people I know aren’t even the focus of the story.
2. There’s a massive info dump on the first couple of pages about the heroine’s cult life. I don’t ever want to read info dumps like that. I’d much rather read about the details slowly throughout the story. I understand there was a complicated back story here, but even so, I don’t think page after page of past cult life experiences were necessary. It got tedious pretty darn quickly.
3. Child abuse is a deal breaker for me. I won’t spoil anything, but there’s a scene detailing child abuse toward the 3% mark in the story that told me it was officially time to DNF. This book is being marketed as a “secret baby” romance. There’s really no secret. It’s right there in the blurb and everything. If there’s one thing I can’t stand its false advertising.
So, long-story-short, I’d skip this one if I were you, but if you’re one of those readers who just has to see things for themselves (or if you’re a masochist), don’t say I didn’t warn you.
I received a free audio code from the narrator for this story.
As for the narration, I enjoy his voice and his female voices, while a bit breathy, are good. My biggest issue is when he is narrating the female POV, I have to keep reminding myself he is in the female POV. He does not change his voice at all for her thinking parts.
The story:
This has a listening time of just over 7hrs. The main characters don't meet until 3hrs into the story. This is not the first time this author has done this. There is a lot of time spent on pre-story that is used to set up the story line. And for this one, a lot happens to Eric, including sex with two other women, before he meets Calee. I don't exactly have a problem with that b/c he was not really cheating on her since they had not met, my issue is: I don't see how it improved/moved along/ worked with in the story. What was the point of telling us about it? And the fight he had with the nurse in his practice, there was not a lot of point with that either.
Calee's backstory worked b/c we needed to know where she was coming from. Though I'm not at all sure why this is considered a Secret Baby romance, b/c the baby was not secret.
Once the two were brought together the story was interesting enough to finish, but it never really captivated me, not til the end with the main drama and Eric's military friends. But I never had a stake in their relationship, not really.
There was on WFT moment, and if I could ever figure out how to add gifs to these things then it would be the Britney giving the WTF face. So he is a Dr., but he smokes, ok fine, not great but not un-heard of, BUT then he OFFERS HER ONE, KNOWING she is pregnant. She doesn't take it but still that is all kinds of WTF, Dr.? And then there is the scene with her drinking wine that he gives her. It was almost like the secret baby was a secret to the author, or only present for the start and end of the book.
Calee was taken to the Ark at a very young age and then her parents sold her to the cult leader as a bride for him. The cult is very dangerous and anyone that goes against the leader disappears. So when Calee didn't give the leader a child he deemed her fruitless and put her aside. Eric is a surgeon and former military man that worked as a medic in and out of the field. Eric comes across Calee when she is on the run from the cult. Eric is one of those alpha males that doesn't take no for an answer so he Convinced Calee to let him help her. Calee remember others that had tried to help her and tried to make him leave her and think of himself instead. Calee and Eric's adventure turns into a road trip all the way to California. Thinking that they were safe Calee and Eric dropped their guards. Then Calee receives a call from Raymond the Cult leader and know they were just dreaming it was over. I loved this book. Calee and Eric's romance was sweet and sexy at times. If you haven't gotten this book I suggest you do so now. I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
The synopsis isn't the best representation of this book, so I was caught off guard by the story line in general. We may as well be going in blind, honestly. However, with that being said, this book was a happy surprise because I really enjoyed it. This is more of a romantic suspense since Calee and Eric are essentially on the run from her past. Calee and Erin have great chemistry and while the story may be a little far fetched, it was still well written and had some hot as well as sweet moments.
Love the narration. Another excellent performance by this narrator who is really able to bring these characters alive. I am a fan of Rodney Falcon's attractive voice and will continue listening to his future performances.
Saving her was good, I enjoyed the concept of the plot and the sex scenes were hot.
Caylee is captive in a Cult's compound married off at the age of 13 to the cults leader.
Caylee dreams of escaping being able to get an education but knows she will be killed if she tries.
Caylee has a little freedom and is allowed to go into the town to the markets to buy provisions but is secretly watched. Caylee has a sexual relationship with a guy from the market, a teacher who also helps out on a stall for a friend or brother which is how they meet. Danny teaches Caylee to read, gives her books and they meet regularly in a cabin out in the woods.
Eric is ex mitary, a doctor, he comes across as grumpy, unsettled and as the story progresses he is told more than once by a friend then a lover that he has a darkness in him, a black hole, a gap he needs to fill to find peace and he needs to find what that is.
That gap as it turns out is Caylee. When Eric first sees Caylee who has just escaped the compound, travelled miles by bus and now sits in a cafe he is drawn to help her.
This I get, this part of the plot I loved what I didn't like was up to the point of Caylee and Eric meeting there are intimate sex scenes both with other people, Eric with his long term f-buddy and Caylee with the guy Danny who becomes her baby's father and wants to help her escape until the Cult leader gets to him.
I liked Danny from the beginning and didn't like the direction the story went and with Eric being a man whore I couldn't take his Insta love with Caylee or their relationship to heart , it didn't feel right.
In summary this is a good action story as Eric contacts black ops and they bring down the cult.
The story tells of a strong woman, a survivor and brings together a man and woman who saved each other in the love sense.
Available in KU. Told in first person's dual pov, leads to hea.

Re: cover. I like the natural look of the man on the cover, the woman just looks downright scary. Maybe it's all the heavy💄makeup? Bad angle? I think it's the Angle her head is in. I'm not looking at her much anyway. I like the tats and the biceps!
Calee's life has been rough. Her parents joined a doomsday religious cult when she was just a child. She wasn't allowed to go to school outside the compound and only taught the sheer basics . Then her parents sold her to become the leader's bride at the age of 13. luckily she never gave him a son he put her aside at age 25 labeling her as fruitless. Even though she is no longer married to the leader she still has no chance to escape. Her only bright part in life is the times she is allowed to go into town. She found a teacher who was trying to help her learn enough to join the real world but he also taught her what it means to be with someone she cares about. However all their precautions fail and she is pregnant and the leader has murdered the teacher. Calee's is being held before they stone her when another woman frees her. Calee has the chance to run and ends up in Colorado but is clueless what to do with little money, no ID or degree and the cult after her. Eric is a rich surgeon who used to serve in the military. He is having problems dealing with the feelings of guilt from not saving all his patients in action. Many of his friends tell him that he has something missing inside. He goes on a quick trip to Colorado to see a dying friend and runs into Calee. He can see how frightened and lost she looks and insists on helping her. Calee tries to push him away since she knows the leader will kill anyone who helps her. Eric won't keep away. He takes her back to his place and introduces her to the joys of normal everyday living. Calee and Eric fall in love but the leader isn't through with her yet. This is a good story with lots of twists and turns. I really felt for Calee in this story and she deserved a HEA. I voluntarily received a copy of this story and this is my honest review.
For me, this book was a lil difficult to read. I actually stopped reading it twice because the beginning was so slow and didn't capture the reader's attention. I also felt that the book focused too much on the cult aspect and not enough on the relationship between the main characters. I wanted to learn more about the characters especially Eric and the relationship growing between him and Calee. I felt that the relationship between them was rushed and not thoroughly planned out. The writing itself was creative and intriguing; I just personally felt there wasn't enough focusing on the characters and that the intimate moments between the main characters and others were a bit too much and unnecessary. The girl at the bar scene should have been skipped all together it wasn't apartof the story held no transition or ties to the plot. However, it was not a bad book! I don't regret reading it at all and would still recommend others to read it but personally for me it's only a three star. On another note, I hate the fact that on Kindle, the entire story takes up 27% of the book because there is another story attached to the end of it, I don't mind previews to other books at the end of books but having a whole nother story on the end of it is a slight pet peeve of mine. if I wanted to read that book as well I would purchase it or rent it.
RR Banks has written a raw, gritty, emotional story about two fractured people trying to heal themselves as they heal each other. Eric is a former Army medic who now lives a privileged life in San Diego as a surgeon, but has a festering darkness within. He is increasingly unhappy and self-medicates with alcohol to numb himself from the horror of his seemingly perfect, yet hollow life. It all comes to a head when he verbally attacks a co-worker and his partner advises him to seek some closure with a dying Army buddy in Colorado. There, he meets Calee, an emotionally broken woman fleeing from a religious cult to whom she was sold by her parents at just age 13. Calee narrowly escaped with her life and is distrustful of Eric's attempts to help her. Having nowhere else to turn, she finally accepts Eric's help. Eric and Calee fight for their lives as they fight to overcome their hideous pasts and work to forge a future together. RR crafts a story blending cult fanaticism, sex slavery, kidnapping, and hints of PTSD. This fast-paced story combines a well-developed backstory with authentic characters, believable dialogue, and steamy sex scenes into a thrill ride of an ending, guaranteed to give the reader the best of book hangovers.
So I’m a little surprised at some of the reviews I read because, frankly, I thought it was a really good story. I understand that a reader’s current state of mind is probably the most influential factor in choosing a score. That would mean in comparison, however, I must be in an uncharacteristically great mood - trust me, very unlikely.
Sure there are some blatant ‘really?’ in there like ‘the goons know your name and you don’t think they’ll figure out your address no matter what state you live in’? .... and of course the trending four/five SEALS that make a lot of noise in the end. 🙄 Still entertaining and well written.
What I really did not like are 1) the title, and 2) the book synopsis. I think they do the story and the author a massive disservice. Had I not read another of R. R. Banks’ books and knew this would be misleading, this story would not have warranted my time.....that is, of course, given my current state of mind. 😉
All comedy aside, I found some strong underlying themes in ‘Saving Her’ that do not lend themselves to the ‘smut fluff’ as described by the synopsis and title. It’s worth a serious read.
There were parts I liked and parts I didn’t. While I understand that MCs have lives before they meet both H & h have very detailed sex scenes with others (two times with different women for the H). Also, there’s so much world building the MC’s don’t even meet until 45% of the way in.
Once they meet, the pace of the story picked up and it became a bit more enjoyable. Somewhat of a Pretty Woman situation ending with a military Op. The characters were a little inconsistent ~ Eric occasionally sounding like a college kid rather than the seasoned Army medic & surgeon he is and Calee being way too worldly & mature for growing up on a religious compound.
Rodney Falcon’s voice is enjoyable and it’s likely his narration is why I finished. There were times where I couldn’t figure out if Banks was using the wrong word or Falcon was pronouncing it incorrectly. The ebook is no longer available, so I couldn’t check.
OK option if you have AE. Banks seems to be hit-or miss for me.
Oooh, this one is soo good! I gotta say when I started reading Saving Her; this book took me by surprise! It was such an intense, suspenseful, thought provoking, almost too hot to handle read. The very first few words caught me in its tantalizing clutches and didn't let me go until the very end!
So much is going on in this fast paced, crazy world R.R. Banks has created. Did I mention this gets a bit intense? Has a wickedly detailed ‘fight’-‘ambush’ scene, that had me all excited picturing in my head how it all went down, Fear not tho! This one still has plenty of hotness ( and I mean Pllleeenntttyyy ) some kick booty humor and sweet hug it out romance that can't be beaten! I can't even begin to tell you all the stuff that goes on in it. You just need to read it! I loved every second of it! R.R. Banks really amped it up on this one! THIS BOOK IS MUST READ!
I have to say R.R. took me by surprise with this book. The storyline is quite unique and thought- provoking and deals with issues relevant right now. Saving Her has a little bit of everything: drama, action, romance, steamy scenes and twists and turns that will keep you hooked until the very end.
A chance encounter places Eric in Calee's path. Something about Calee calls to him and won't let him go. As he finds out the horrible things Calee has gone through his protective instincts kick in and he wants to help her. When Calee's past catches up to her will Eric be able to protect her? Can these two broken souls be the key to helping the other heal?
This fast-paced, exciting, and unique story is one you won't want to miss. The steamy scenes, action, drama, and twists will make this a book you won't soon forget. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Saving Her tells the stories of Calee and Eric. Calee is in a Branch Davidian expy cult. She manages to escape one night and makes her way to Colorado (from Montana.) While trying to figure out her next move, she meets Eric Galloway, a doctor and erstwhile Army medic, who is in CO to visit a friend who doesn't have much time left. When Eric meets Calee, he's inexplicably drawn to her. He makes it his mission to help her, vowing to leave her without knowing she's safe.
This story is not about a very happy subject and some parts weren't particularly to my liking. The sexytimes scenes also seemed very repetitive (and therefore boring and a little frustrating.) However, it's still a great read by a talented author and you'd find it well worth the time to find out how he Saves Her.
I read an ARC of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
Calee and Eric are two people from very different lives - he is a successful surgeon and she was sold to a religious cult leader when she was young. But both are trying to find that missing something and the strength and courage to attain it. She wants to escape but is afraid and he....just hasn't been the same (or has gotten worse) since leaving the military. Building walls around himself and living superficially but always on edge about to crack. There were a myriad of emotions to field in this story - and the reader feels them right along with the characters. The author does a good job of immersing you in their situation (although I did think it started a little slow). Definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. Check it out!
I received an ARC an am voluntarily leaving a review
This book was incredibly well written. The characters are well developed and complex yet likeable. The storyline is very relevant in today's culture. As the story unfolds you can truly feel their pain in your heart. I found myself, like the characters themselves wondering why and how people could stand back and not do their utmost to step up and help. I hope I'm not the only one to read this and question what I could do to help any one I saw who needs help, and note, whispers and stares aren't help, but one never knows how much a smile and small act of kindness could truly help one in need! Excellent job by this author to entertain, and raise awarness that it sometimes the smallest kindness that brings the biggest rewards in lives!
The blurb of this book does not prepare you for how intriguing this book is.
Calee & Eric both have demons. Eric's are from his military days, ghosts from his war zones that eat at him. Calee's are very human, and will not stop at nothing until she is wiped out - literally - from the land of the living.
When these two meet, they are inexplicably drawn to each other. Trust and sympathy are the bonds that bind them initially, but the connection soon turns into attraction, then love blossoms between them, even in the face of danger.
The HEA is truly satisfying, though, and is well-deserved after all the drama and mayhem they endure.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book, and I definitely recommend it!
Unfortunately some big logic flaws. The sect goons knew who the Hs is. A simple Google search would track him down. Does H and h think think they are invincible or untraceable? And given the nutcase running the sect it's only a question of time before he tries to get her back or dead.
2 other things I disliked are that that good doctor not only doesn't intervene men actually encourages a pregnant woman to drink alcohol. The h may not know better giving that she grew up ignorant to the world, but the H is a doctor. He should know better. The other thing is the promise the h gives and does nothing to keep, at least not for the sake of the promise itself. It's kept as "collateral good" so to speak.
But when I turn off my brain a bit it is an entertaining enough read but certainly nothing to reread or recommend.
The topic of this book deals with a cult, the cruelty is places on its female members and how Calee manages to escape. Okay, that's not all it's about since it obviously is a romance. Eric is dealing with his own past and when he sees Calee he reaches out to help her. I found the story has levels of reality within it along with a truly enjoyable romance. Eric has a strength and honor that is rare. He didn't turn his back on Calee even after he learned the whole story and the consequences that could follow him.
I don't understand some reviews that I have read here, but I do understand will all see things with different eyes. Personally, I liked the characters along with how everything played out. Well done!
Review: This novel had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I gasped. I was mad/angry. I was sad. I was happy. I laughed hard. I had every emotion you can think of. This novel is the perfect combination of Alpha (former military) males, young love, innocent young impressionable women, psycho cult leader and cult members, wannabe militia, sexy as h*ll doctor and a HEA. I mean there wasn’t much more that I can think of that wasn’t in this novel. It is a 100% MUST READ!!
I’m just wound up that I could scream…may have to re-read this one! :D Enjoy!!
I give this book by R. R. Banks 5 stars. The storyline between Calee and Eric was well written. Calee lives on the Ark Compound as a fruitless women, meaning she has been unable to have a baby. Her parents brought her to live their since she was 8 years old, her parents lost interest when she was 13 years old and bought their freedom by marrying her off to the leader Raymond Hester. Eric is a Doctor going through a tough time, one of his friends from the military is losing the battle against Cancer. He goes to say his goodbyes to his friend. This was a must read book. I voluntarily reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Wow. RR Banks had to have dug deep for this story. A lot of this book is very dark and emotional but there is some goodness and love in there as well. I absolutley loved this book and even more is that I loved that I could feel the emotions of the two main characters. Fantastic read and one that should not be passed up! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book. Hero, Eric = 5/5 Heroine, Calee = 5/5 Chemistry = 5/5 Sex = 5/5 Plot = 5/5 Mystery = 3/5 Action = 3/5 Darkness = 3/5 Humor = 1/5 POV = dual Would I recommend this book = yes Would I re-read this book = yes Would I read future books by this author = yes
What better way to start a secret baby romance than with a bunch of crazy religious cult and a woman looking to break free?! Calee was basically sold to the leader of a religious cult at the age of thirteen. Now, at the age of 27, she's trying to escape. The only problem? She now finds herself pregnant to a guy in town. After a chance encounter with Eric in a diner during her escape attempt, she feels there might be hope. But no one has ever successfully escaped from the cult before. So she's not sure she can ever find safety. Even with Eric. Definitely nail-biting up to the end. 5 stars!
Calee is a very bright young lady who was sold to a religious spewing pedophile by her parents. Calee was thirteen years old and is now twenty-seven. Seen as an outcast by the cult since she has yet to produce a child by the leader Raymond. Calee becomes involved with one of the local townsmen and ends up pregnant. Raymond has him killed and plans to kill Calee when she is able to escape. Raymond refuses to give up his search for her but she meets Eric. Eric turns out to be more than a ex-military surgeon, he turns out to be her savior. This was such a great story with something for everyone.
I'm not really sure how this book has so many great reviews. I did browse through them a little bit, and I realize that most of them were ARC's, so I don't know if that makes a difference. But it was not a five-star book. It only took me a couple of hours to read it was very short and the dynamic was weird. It is not a book that I would recommend to anybody. This is not a commemt made to upset anybody or hurt the author, it just seemed that this book was quickly written without a lot of thought and I just wasn't impressed and I'm sad I wasted a couple hours on something that wasn't worth it.
The premise of this book read like a ripped from the Headlines, Cult in the U.S. story. The account of what the lead female had to endure was extremely disturbing. From the age of 13 her parents abandoned her by giving her in marriage to a much older man, who had many wives and kept changing them out as they aged. Its a pity that the 'parents' weren't hunted down and jailed, but apparently the law was too apathetic and in cahoots with the cult leader.
With the forgoing setting the scene, Calee is in need of rescuing and a happy ending. She does initially manage to rescue herself and eventually becomes the light to another man's darkness.
This was another good story from R. R. Banks! I was compelled to keep listening to see what was going to happen! Great subject matter with Callie. Life on a compound...so different. I was surprised and shocked at a few things that happened during the story. I easily listened to this in one day. Let’s just say I was riveted.
This is my fourth book by this author. The story is good and the characters all have different lives. Which I liked. I didn’t get a great feeling of love for the characters but I liked them. This one was narrated by Rodney Falcon. He does a good job and it’s always nice listening to his voice.
This is an emotional rollercoaster of a book. Eric and Calee are both in need of something more in life. Calee, in need of getting away from the cult her parents sold her to long ago. And Eric wanting to feel like he didn't fail everyone in his life. When Eric finds Calee on the run, they find each other at the perfect time and bring each other the love they both need. I loved this story so much. I will so be rereading this book again. I voluntary read an advance readers copy for my honest review.
