Just an average Joe in a zombie apocalypse... out of shape, misanthropic, and carrying his cat.
When the undead horde hits New Orleans, Joe has only one goal in mind: to reach his wife, Clare, who’s hopefully safe at her mother’s house, 80 miles away in Baton Rouge. To get there, he must battle through swarms of undead and, worse, idiotic humans in the French Quarter, snag his tricked-out zombie-proof van, and haul ass down the zombie-infested highways and byways of southern Louisiana. With any luck, he’ll survive the mayhem, make it to Clare in time, and keep his disgruntled kitty, Azazel, alive.
Escape from the Big Easy is the first book in the Zombie Chaos series. If you are a fan of Mark Tufo, David Simpson, or TW Piperbrook, you’ll love following Joe on his madcap breakout from zombie-filled New Orleans.

This book contains foul language (he’s fleeing from zombies, so there’s gonna be some F-bombs), graphic descriptions of gore (um, zombies), and quite a bit of misanthropic snark.
Wow!! This was awesome. I loved this book and I can't wait to start the second book in this series. Great story with amazing writing. My heart was beating out of my chest throughout the whole book. I love Joe and can't wait until he gets to Claire. I'm still sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what's going to happen.
And a lot of fun. Honestly I think the MC should have died a couple of times, but I like him and kept rooting for him. I didn't find any errors in this book. My only complaint would be the how of the zombies coming about needs to be explained better. I recommend this book.
When a zombie book is set in New Orleans, I try to pick it up. I've visited several times over the years, and I figure it would be a colorful kind of apocalypse. I'm also more interested in unusual settings than in a generic place.
I wasn't let down by the descriptions. The author is from there, so I enjoyed the feel of the book having local flavor.
There's tons of zombie action, starting from the first page. Some unusual attack scenes, lots of running, some bits of history.
One thing I really got a kick out of was the cat. The main character runs around the city with his cat in a carrier, fighting zombies. It was amusing (but grim because it is an apocalypse) but I can imagine a lot of people refusing to leave their animals behind.
My problem with the book was the main character. I didn't entirely like him. His attitude occasionally rubbed me the wrong way. And the author set up a couple of scenes to support the guy's crappy attitude. He also made some really stupid decisions. It was frustrating because he would do something smart, then turn around and do something idiotic.
Still, enjoyed the cat, the location, the guy's wife - even though she doesn't show up in this book. He just thinks about her a lot, and tries to escape N.O. so he can pick her up in Baton Rouge.
I would definitely recommend this book for the zombie lover! I like the strong tone of reality in every page, every decision characters make... Just a really non stop action and gore packed story to enjoy!
A little bit too much of a travelogue (I went left on Royal then right on whatever street then left onto...), but overall an enjoyable ride. It makes me miss my home away from home, and they perfectly capture the atmosphere of the Big Easy.
If you like the post-apocalyptic zombie genre, this is certainly worth reading. It has the fun setting of Halloween in New Orleans. Slower paced than I would like. The story takes a long time to do not much. The gimmick that the hero knows a little bit ahead of time of what's going to happen doesn't really work for me. Perhaps in subsequent books of the series it will make more sense. I didn't hate it but it certainly wasn't the worst I've read in this genre.
Ok, it might have ended up being better but I stopped about 60% they the book. It’s hard to invest in the character when the content constantly beers off course into describing New Orleans. If you want a great description of the city and what to visit or do then read this book. I just couldn’t get into it because of the constant distraction of The Travel Channel.
I highly recommend this book! I could not put it down. I loved the characters so much, especially azazel! Great story and i like the twist on how the zombie Apocalypse happens. Very descriptive and loved the snark. It starts out in New Orleans and I just visited the marvelous city so for me it was awesome being able to recognize the description in the book. It is nice and fast paced with gore thrown in between. Can not wait to read the next one.
Started but didn't finish. The book is well written it's just that I've read so many in this genre there needs to be something new to keep my attention. New readers to this genre would enjoy this I am sure.
It's slow to get going, and the beginning feels like we missed a big chunk of what was going on. The horror movie quotes at the beginning of each chapter don't add anything - they aren't even particularly applicable to the chapters.
Just a run of the mill Zombie book. Very disappointed, I was hopping for a good old fashion, blood dripping story! It was the first of a series but I won't be buying the next one. Don't waste your time or money.
I liked how the author talked about the architect of New Orleans. The fun thing that did everyday. He express his sadness , fear and terror of the zombies.
If you are a lover of animals as well as all things Zombie, you will enjoy this first installment of what is sure to be a great adventure in the Zombie Apocalypse!
This is a really good zombie end of the world adventure! I was nearly put off by the cover as it looked a little young but the blurb sounds good, so I had a go & was really pleased I did! A great amusing fun apocalyptic story set in New Orleans which was great as it had a little tradition/culture which added to the whole! I do recommend & will look for more by these writers!
A snarky, action-packed, and, yes, fun-filled ride through the ZA. I have a select few favorite zombie authors that I auto-buy, and this husband-wife team, Daniel and Laura Martone, is now one of them. This is a unique take on the zombie virus and it's origins. Board the Zombie Mobile, buckle your seatbelt, and hang on tight.
Well written, with sarcasm galore this book spoke to me the moment I began reading it and I couldn't put it down.
Joe is, well... your average, everyday joe. Thrown into the ZA, he and his wife, Clare, were warned a few weeks in advance about what was headed their way. They rush to get as prepared as they can. Unfortunately, it hits a week earlier than anticipated, leaving Joe and Clare separated by 80 miles. With Joe in the "Big Easy", finishing up and preparing supplies, and Clare at her mom's.
We don't really get to know Clare in this book, except through Joe's ruminations. But I already like the lady who is Joe's heart and other half. Joe is so much like me in personality that I felt the authors wrote the story about me instead, lol!
Poor Joe is left scrambling to finish up, and has to hot-foot it around town while dealing with zombies, crooks, drugged up college students, and self-centered yuppies. His only companion is their quirky cat, Azazel.
Love this character who is just a regular guy who loves his wife and his cat. Great adventure as he struggles to get through New Orleans and to his wife in Baton Rouge. Love the mix of characters he meets on the journey. Nice character development that so many zompoc books lack.
Could have been the perfect book if the MC hadn't been saddled with a wife. I've always disliked the "it's the apocalypse and I gotta find my loved ones" trope. Everything else about the MC is great but the wife stuff seems out of character for such a misanthrope.
EDIT: Damn you Martone Team, I can stop thinking of Francis now.
Absolutely thought this book was great! What a character Joe is! I just hope I have a Joe around somewhere close when the turds start to hit the fan blades. And don’t get me started on his truck! How cool would that be??? Can’t wait to read the next one!
Definitely a different take on a Zombie apocalypse book! It had some pretty funny parts. I did feel it dragged on a bit but I look forward to reading the next one.
