His only chance to save a young girl’s life is to put his trust in a headline-hunting kidnapper.

Former reporter Scott Fleetwood and his family are still recovering after tangling with a notorious kidnapper, the Piper, when another kidnapper grips the city. The Shepherd has snatched a young girl from a vacationing family. Other than money, he has one demand: he’ll talk only to Scott.

Special Agent Tom Sheils is on the case and will watch over Scott every step of the way. The Shepherd promises the girl’s safety as long as Scott follows the rules of his game. Forced to trail the kidnapper’s twisting lead—and haunted by the last victim he failed to save—Scott is desperate to keep the past from making a brutal comeback.

But just when Scott and Sheils think they’re winning and that it will all be over soon, the Shepherd ups the stakes. Scott begins to realize he’s a pawn in a scheme that runs deeper than greed…and colder than death.

Saving Grace is a quick paced child abduction thriller with a plot twist ending that will leave you reeling.

I've not read anything by Simon Wood before now and it took a chapter or two to get used to his style of writing. Part of me feels that his style is a bit too marketable, too contrived but there is something also about that style that read well since the primary character is a journalist. I also was able to figure out "whodunit," almost immediate and you might as well. Trust me, that will not hinder your enjoyment of the book nor will it prepare you for the ending.

Saving Grace is a sequel of sorts to the book "Paying the Piper" and while it is not necessary to read them in order, I wish I had done so. I think I would have understood the characters and their motives a bit better if I had.

I highly recommend this book and the others in the series. I know I will be reading them all.

This is the 2nd book in the series featuring journalist Scott Fleetwood and FBI agent Tom Sheils. I have not read the first novel 'Pay the Piper', but this did not detract from my enjoyment or understanding of this novel.
Former reporter Scott Fleetwood and his family are still recovering after tangling with a notorious kidnapper, the Piper, when another kidnapper grips the city. The Shepherd has kidnapped a young girl from a family who are currently in the country on holiday.
Special Agent Tom Sheils is in charge of the case and will watch over Scott to ensure the kidnapped girl, Grace is kept safe. The Shepherd promises to release Grace as long as Scott follows his instructions to the letter.
This is a good tense thriller with two interesting characters.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The cover is amazing !! So true to the plot !!

The book started with a bang ! The ease with which the kidnapper chooses a victim for his kidnapping without almost any homework is scary and disturbing. He picks up sweet Grace right from under her parent's nose. And this is just chapter 1 !

The Independent has been receiving flak ever since Scott's previous blunder which went to a whole new level of revenge and killing. Scott's been removed from his job as reporter for The Independent , his family still slowly try to come out of the emotional damage caused by the previous episode and Agent Sheils is almost on the verge of retiring. We can say, things are pretty dandy as of now. BOOM ! And then arrives the game changer !! The newspaper's office receives a call from some claiming to be 'The Shepherd' and apparently holding a 6-year old girl hostage. The Shepherd only wants to deal with Scott. This new twist to the kidnapping now intrudes Scott's healing family and brings him back to the center of the game. We also get to see the marketing gimmicks of one Mr.Thorpe, who's been appointed as consultant to revive the newspaper. His decision ?? To sensationalize this kidnapping and get the newspaper back on top.

From here starts the game of cat and mouse, with Scott being the mouse of course. The Shepherd is well planned, well organized, smart and always 2 steps ahead of FBI at all times. We see that The Shepherd is receiving instructions from a third person, and this man wants the whole scene to be stretched as much as possible. Throughout the book, The Shepherd remained consistent and honorable. And that I loved ! The military angle behind 'The Shepherd' theory was heart-breaking and touching. The pain and trauma Grace's family go through during the negotiations and otherwise is also so heart-breaking ! The situation is so tense, everyone is mistrustful, everyone is suspicious, relations are tested and broken.. Phew ! A lot of drama !

I had a guess who the third man could be , because it was getting a little predictable towards the second half of the book. But what surprised me was 'The Shepherd' and how in the end justice was served to the one who'd thought he had gotten away after such a deplorable game. The plot also highlights how sensationalizing trivial news and the 'Breaking News' concept has evaded journalism. It's frightening!

I would have given the book 5 stars for 'The Shepherd' and even the plot, but Scott and Agent Sheils were a let down for me. It was ridiculous to read the FBI being trumped in their own game. It was hardly a chase !! Infact, thaey were being tagged along wherever the kidnapper wanted. That was the only down point for me, but otherwise the plot was amazing and I enjoyed reading this book.

From the publisher: Former reporter Scott Fleetwood and his family are still recovering after tangling with a notorious kidnapper, the Piper, when another kidnapper grips the city. Forced to trail the kidnapper’s twisting lead - - and haunted by the last victim he failed to save - - Scott is desperate to keep the past from making a brutal comeback. But just when Scott and Sheils think they’re winning and that it will all be over soon, the Shepherd ups the stakes. Scott begins to realize he’s a pawn in a scheme that runs deeper than greed . . . and colder than death.

The victim, Grace Pagett, is a six-year-old girl on vacation from the UK with her family. Scot and his family seek out the Pagett family in a somewhat “unconventional get-together. The family of a kidnapped child was at the home of a family who’d had their children kidnapped. The unusual demographics were topped off by the presence of the FBI.” But Scott fears what will happen if the Shepherd becomes aware of the FBI tail.

A side effect of this is the effect it has on The Independent, the newspaper that Scott works for. “Newspaper sales spiked, website traffic had quadrupled, advertisers were clamoring to be part of the action at premium rates. All this because a man had kidnapped a child and the Independent had a ringside seat to it all. It was disheartening that events like these drove the news business and kept The Independent solvent.” One of the characters, who works at the Independent, thinks to himself “If this was what passed for journalism, then it might be time for him to go.” The suspense is palpable as the kidnapper has not released Grace, although a ransom has been paid.

Simon Wood has once again given his readers a gripping novel, one in which the characters are very real and the inherent danger very real. The pages can’t turn quickly enough, and the book is highly recommended.

I loved this fast-paced, twisty follow-up to Simon Wood's previous child-abduction mystery/thriller, Paying the Piper. I figured out the bad guy behind the kidnapping plot early on, but that didn't bother me. In fact, it made me feel rather clever. And there's a surprise twist at the end that was a total surprise.

There's no need to have read the previous book to enjoy this one, but I think it's a good idea. I read the earlier book eight years ago and remembered it pretty well.

Now I have to seek out some Jaffa Cakes. Read the book to find out all about them.

"A Fast Moving Cliffhanger"

This is another spellbinding thriller by one of my favorite authors. Former reporter Scott Fleetwood and his family continue to heal after tangling with a notorious kidnapper known as the Piper. Now there is still another kidnapper in the San Francisco Bay area known as the Shepherd. He has snatched a young girl from a vacationing British family while around Pier 39. Special Agent Tom Sheils will keep watch over Scott as the villain wants to talk to only Scott, and maybe he will release the girl if Scott follows the rules of the game. A mind-bending, thrilling story you'll not be able to put down. Excellently written with stunning, realistic characters. Highly recommend.

Poor Scott he is a magnet for the crazies, another kidnapping other call to the paper, another kidnapper wants to give Scott his story, but after what happened with the Piper does Scott want anything to do with this case?

It was interesting to catch back up with Scott and the kids to see how they are doing and have they healed from the events with the Piper. I liked that it wasn't brushed under the rug that the family is still coming to grips with it all.

Mel Foster's narration as Scott was great! I honestly don't know how he was able to pull off the voice changer voices it was impressive!

I love all of this authors books I haven't hit a dud yet! Highly recommend this one and all others by this author.

Nothing like a story that has you wondering if it is a happy or a sad ending once you are finished. This one is a bit of both I guess. Not your usual bad guy and not the scenario you expect. The story definitely held my interest and it was a satisfying read.

Although this is the 2nd book in this series, this was my first read of this author and the results were mixed. Still recovering from a kidnapping of his own children, former newspaper reporter Scott Fleetwood becomes a liason between the good guys and the bad guys when a new kidnapper calling himself "The Shepherd" snatches a young girl at an amusement park in San Francisco. But after two botched ransom drops, things take a turn for the worse and perhaps everything is not as it seems.

I thought the author did a very good job writing the characters as I liked some and disliked others and felt they were all believable, but in my opinion the plot fell a little flat and predictable. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Another Winner!!!

Wow! I wasn't sure how Simon Wood could top Paying The Piper, but Saving Grace did it.

Scott Fleetwood is back not long after his, and his family's, run in with the Piper. And then here comes Piper 2.0. The FBI is back along with the nightmares. Like Piper, Grace picks up on a fast pace and doesn't slow down. It helps to put you in Scott's shoes, with the clock ticking and no time to waste.

The characters are authentic. The situation is plausible. This feels like a crime for the modern ages. And Simon Wood doesn't disappoint. There is a point when you start wondering, who is the bad guy and who is the hero?

I am not sure how a third installment would play out, but I am hoping there will be one.!

Wow! This mystery/thriller is spot on for plot, characters (author Simon Wood provides the reader with both those you want to cheer on and those you want to throttle); great setting - San Francisco; I also appreciated the fact the author used language to move the story forward so I wanted to turn the page and finally the ending was oh so satisfying!! Ready for the next one.

Great read. I’m an audiobook reader in my car during a 35 to 50 minute commute o I’m always looking for things that keep my attention. This definitely fit the bill even if I did guess at some of the ending twist.

An exciting read from beginning to end! I didn’t realize it was the 2nd book in a series until after I started it, so I’ll be going back to read the 1st book as I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and I’ll be adding all of Simon Woods books to my TBR!

Saving Grace -

After reading ‘Paying the Piper’ last year and thoroughly enjoying it I decided to read the second book in the series. Similar to the first it was action packed with loads of twist and turns. However, I did guess who Elvis was fairly quickly. I think the Piper storyline was slightly better than this one, but still a good read. 4.75 out of 5 from me. I will look at reading some more from Simon.

Former reporter Scott Fleetwood and his family are still recovering from his children being kidnapped. A family from England is on vacation when their young daughter Grace is kidnapped. The kidnapper calls the newspaper Scott used to work for and will only speak to Scott. Scott is reluctant to get involved but knows he has no choice. The life of a young child is at stake. Special Agent Shields is in charge of the case. The kidnapper manages to stay one step ahead of them and keep them jumping through hoops in their attempts to find Grace.

This is an emotional tension filled book. At times I was very angry with a few of the characters and their choices. The plot kept me turning pages to find out the next twist in the story. There was a surprise at the end of the book that I saw coming but didn’t guess all of it. This is part of a series but you won’t have any trouble enjoying this book if you haven’t read the previous book. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Simon Wood is on my list of favorite authors. I've read every single one of his books and he "grabs" you by the throat and spits you out....having main character (Scott) reliving the nightmares all over again and not knowing if he'll be able to accomplish what's been asked of him. Spiraling downward into a sort of madness is very evident, but somehow the urgency of situation at hand moves him forward. What Simon does is make you feel like you're the main character....the character's flaws, strengths, fears! It wouldn't be fair to go into much detail about the book because I'd be spoiling it for you. You must read it! You have to read it! Prepare yourself for the longest, scariest roller coaster of your life....non-ending suspense! Simon allows you to "be" the other characters and you get to know them pretty well. Add him to your list of favorite authors! I'm so ready for his next one! Thank you, Simon Wood!

A good sequel.

I enjoyed both books in the 'Fleetwood and Shiels' mini-series. Saving Grace, like Paying The Piper, kept me intrigued from start to finish. I'd guessed the villain behind both stories early on but in both I kept second guessing myself as more and more layers to the stories unfolded.

These were my first Simon Wood novels but will now definitely not be my last. His talent for bringing his characters to life is excellent and I'd recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a tale a of kidnap and intrigue with a large dose of humanity (both the good and bad sides) thrown in. Solid 4 stars.

Fast moving thriller!!

I won this book on Goodreads.

When I picked up this book I couldn’t put it down. What a way to start! Grace is kidnapped while on a family vacation to the United States. The kidnapper will only speak Scott Fleetwood, a former reporter for The Independent. Scott is still recovering from the kidnapping of his own sons. The kidnapper identifies himself as “The Sheppard”. This is a thriller from beginning to the end.

I would recommend reading this book.

Unstoppable!

I just could not set this book down after I started to read. Lots of drama and a great story. I read book #2 without reading book # 1 so I may have missed some of the back story of the protagonists. The book really worked well as a stand alone story. Not sure if I want to go back and read the first book but if there more in the series, I definitely want to read them.

I was excited when I found out there would be a follow up to Wood’s book Paying The Piper...and it didn’t disappoint! This book kept me reading - I finished it in less than 48 hours but had a day of work stashed in that 48 hours! Definitely another page turner from one of my favorite thriller authors!

I don’t want to give up to much of the story- while you could probably read Saving Grace as a stand alone I would suggest reading Paying The Piper first or you are losing a great amount of rich history between the characters. While it had been a while since I read Piper I was able to fall right into Saving Grace like I had read it last week!

I definitely recommend this read!

A lovely sequel

Simon Wood brings his A-game to "Save Grace". I love series because I can see where a character goes next and am loving that Scott Fleetwood was chosen as a character to expound upon. We get a glimpse into several characters, some of whom we've seen before, all of which are well formed and expertly conveyed. A job well done!

Controlled chaos!

This was a sensational story with the characters we remember from book one. The exchanging of the cell phones, etc throughout the story was repetitive, but I guess necessary. This writer has a way of weaving a story that grips you until the end. I enjoy all of Simon's books!

A Gripping Read

Every bit as good as the first book Paying the Piper, I really like the two main characters Shiels and Fleetwood and their relationship and then there's the story telling of Simon Wood which keeps you gripped to the end. I shall be looking out further books of this author. If you are thinking of buying this book, in would say go ahead but read Paying the Piper first, I explains the main characters relationship. A great read.
