Not your typical book of monologues, this new collection embodies the mission of The Kilroys, an advocacy group founded in 2013 to raise awareness for the underutilized work of female and female-identifying playwrights. The collection is comprised of monologues from "The List"-- the result of an industry survey to locate the most highly-regarded, underproduced plays by women and trans playwrights.
I enjoyed so many of these monologues, and it made me want to read/watch these plays in full. The only thing is I wish there was an index that separated monologues for women, men, and nonbinary characters—would be helpful for actor types to more easily find monologues to use for auditions. :) Overall, a solid collection.
I wish this monologue book had been a book of monologues for female and trans CHARACTERS by female and trans playwrights, but it was still the theatre balm I needed for my soul this year. I'm just tired of reading things written by men. I look forward to reading future editions of this book.
Like a master class in playwriting from writers you know and writers you'll know soon. Great source for actors looking to find fresh, original audition material, too.
Good stuff! Also know that there are monologues for men in there too, so if you're a dude who wants to support female and trans playwrights by performing their work, you should check this out too!
