Hello! Thank you for stopping by. The short story is I was born in Toronto, Canada. When I was 16, my family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and that is where I met my wife, Bev. We've been married for 43 years and share our home in Southwest Missouri with 4 dogs, 3 cats, 8 chickens, a herd of goats. We have 3 sons and 12 grandchildren that keep us hopping. I've been known to ride my motorcycle in nice weather, play golf in nice weather, and tend my garden in nice weather. In bad weather, I prefer to stay inside. :) Thanks to the support of you, our readers, I've been able to devote full time to my writing. Bev does our cover designs. We hope you our books are enjoyable and you'll let us know. Please feel free to contact us at: jdalglish7@gmail.com or on Facebook God Bless, John & Bev
The story starts out in July of 1940. Keiko's parents have a restaurant in San Francisco. Azumi is her mother, Hotaru is her sister and Jesse is a guy that likes Keiko. Jesse's uncle warns him that some people will not like Jesse being attracted to a girl of Japanese ancestry.
The story goes on to reveal how some thugs deal with Jesse, how Keiko and her family are forced to leave California and go to the Santa Anita Assembly center and what the conditions there were and how the family dealt with them and how her father wants Jesse to stop seeing Keiko and the lengths he will go to in order to make that happen.
The family then is moved to the Heart Mountain camp so again we see the types of things they have to deal with, how one girl is attacked by the camp leader's son, how Keiko has another romantic interest, what happens to her father there and how things end up being resolved.
The story does a good job showing the level of prejudice against the persons of Japanese ancestry even before they were sent to the camps. You get a good idea just how difficult of life was in the camps and how the internees tried to make the best of a bad situation.
The story also has a very well-done romantic storyline.
Although not my usual genre, this has to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. This is historical fiction, with a touch of romance thrown in, about one of the darker time in America's history, the internment of those of Japanese descent during WWII. The story is told from the point of view of an American boy and Japanese girl who had connected before Pearl Harbor and highlights the challenges each of them face during that time of internment.
There is much there that is hard to read in the descriptions of how the U.S. treated its citizens of Japanese descent but also good in the way that at least some American's responded. One can only hope that all America will work to prevent such a thing from ever happening again. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone wondering about this period of history. The fact that it is very well written and a great story in its own right is wonderful bonus.
Unlike the last two books I've read, where I had to force myself to finish them, I read Keiko's War in one sitting! Once I started reading it, I became so engrossed that I had to keep reading until I finished it! Japanese girl Keiko and her American boy friend Jesse find their budding friendship put on pause when war breaks out and Pearl Harbor is bombed. Times change dramatically for the Japanese families living in parts of my state--California. This book is really well written, is thought provoking, has interesting characters, and makes you root for Keiko to find happiness. Five stars!
Excellent story about American boy who fall in love with Japanese girl during WWII and what happens when Pearl Harbor is attacked and what we did to the American Japanese with the internment camps so this story has a Love story interwoven with historical events and was very interesting how the story evolved and the characters develop throughout the story. Really enjoyed this one. Give it a try. If you like stories that take place during a real historical time that are fictional with the Love interest and what happens to them I encourage you to read this one. Peace.
Jesse Sommers likes a Japanese girl, Keiko Yoshida. Pearl Harbor is attacked and everything changes. Keiko and her family are removed to a detention camp.
What a moving story, one we should never forget. Fear of the coronavirus is spreading across the world and things are happening because of that fear. Fear trampled the freedom of the American Japanese after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Empire. Because of fear, American leaders did horrible things.
I was 7yrs when the war started. We had enternment near our town and several of my brothers friends were taken there. It was so sad, but interesting as to what happened to these Japanese people who were born in America.
