Off-Campus Setup

Rate this book
Levi Cox left it all behind to go to school in California, but nothing could prepare him for what he discovers when he gets there. Between the university screwing up his living arrangements, the weird meddling old woman who runs the boarding house, and the fellow student who instantly catches his eye, life in Cali is more than he expected, and he isn’t sure he’s ready for any of it. College was supposed to be an adventure, but this might be more than Levi can handle.

Nathan Orion wants to have fun. That’s what he lives for and it's exactly what his college years are supposed to be about. He’s happy with living the single life and being carefree…that is until the new student at his grandmother’s boarding house crashes into his life. Now he’s been recruited to show the new guy around, and if Nathan has his way, it won't be just on-campus.

Will there be more, or is this only an illusion? Two men thrown together, not expecting anything, but possibly finding so much more than an off-campus setup.

Holy crap! That ending...

I have to admit that for the first 75% of the story, I felt pretty ambivalent about this book.

When the story began, Levi came across as a complete whiny little bitch, which annoyed me to no end.

And Nathan felt, I don't know... two dimensional? Whatever it was, he didn't really endear himself to me, until maybe half way through the story.

So yeah, not overly memorable.

Then PLOT TWIST!

A big one. It was huuuuge. It was utterly adorable. And it shocked the hell out of me, but also made me "awwwwww" pretty loudly to boot.

I'm rating this book at around 3.5 stars, but wish that I'd enjoyed the first parts of the book as much as I did the bits at the end.

Levi sweet sexy cowboy, Nathan, maybe a bit of a brat, but with a golden heart... lol Polar opposites of each other.. City boy vs. Country boy. Nathan's Devious Grandma Mavis ( I love her and want to be here when I'm a grandma) Sets up Nathan to Date Levi, Show him around, show him a good time, he's new to cali.. Knows no one... she said. Perfectly innocent and something a grandma would do.. Except. Nathan never meant to fall for Levi, also he forgot one important rule........ Never get comfortable around Mavis.. Mwahhh!! She is a wild card that one. Can Nathan and Levi move past Mavi's Set up? Or will they both be to shocked?

Off Campus Setup

This book was alright. The setup was A little bit predictable from the start. But I liked Levi and Nathan and the way their story was written. And there was a smaller plot twist that made the ending more interesting. I wasn’t a huge fan of Nathan’s grandma Mavis, but I think that’s more personal preference rather than how she was written into the book. I also wouldn’t mind seeing a book about Catch, Nathan’s friend as well.

pretty meh throughout = 2.5* rounded down for stupid ending

I know some people really liked the ending but I was not one of those people. The beginning was a bit slow and I struggled to get into it. At about 30% it started to get better. I liked both young men although Nathan's reason for not telling his grandmother certain things made little to no sense at all. But they are just nascent adults so I can almost believe it. I liked the two boys together and could believe they were falling in love. But I hated the grandmother completely. She was an annoying character whose role it seemed to be to just do whatever the author needed her to do regardless if it made any sense. And the ending really did not. It was just so contrived and unbelievable.

Levi is leaving his small town in Texas to start college in Southern California. Upon arrival he learns that he isn't assigned a dorm. He is given the number to rent a room from Mavis, off campus and immediately scoops it up. Nathan is Mavis's grandson, he lives in the same house and will be attending the same school. But that is where the similarities between these two begin and end. Nathan is a partier who wants nothing to do with Levi and Levi is a country bumpkin intent on focusing on nothing but school. Well Mavis has other plans and when she makes an offer to Nathan that he can't refuse, Nathan and Levi end up spending more time together than they planned and learned that maybe opposites are a good thing.

While I enjoyed this book it was a bit flat and predictable. I don't have anything bad to say about but it just didn't call to me and make me love it. Although the ending was a big plot twist that was super cute and I didn't see coming. Really loved that and it made up for the flat and predictability of the book.

FUN, & SWEET!

This was an entertaining story, to say the least! Light, and Fun with a crazy Grandma trying to play matchmaker; you can't go wrong! I loved the witty banter and chemistry between Nathan & Levi! Levi being a sexy, yet sweet Texan, you can't help but fall in love with him. Nathan, I wasn't sure about him at first but the more you read about him, the more you love him. Putting these two together make for a fun, sweet story! I also loved the twist at the end! Great book, and I recommend to all that love a good M/M read!

4 Stars!

Levi moves to California to go to college from Texas, unfortunately, once he gets there, he discovers he has nowhere to live. However, one of the ladies at the registrar's office takes pity on him and suggests him a boarding house that will take him in at such short notice. Once there, he meets Nathan and his meddling grandmother, Mavis, and his life will never be the same again.

Nathan is a party boy, but he has some hidden plans that he's not willing to share with anyone but his best friend. Needing some money to put his plans in motion, he asks his grandmother for help and she offers him a deal: Show their newest tenant around and date him and he'll get the money. He's not looking for a boyfriend, but the more he knows of Levi, the more he likes him. They quickly get close, but what will happen when Levi finds out about the deal? And is more in play than each of them expects?

I loved Levi, he is such a fun, sweet, adorable boy. He isn't interested in partying and misses his family. He's attracted to Nathan from the moment they meet and while he's not certain why Nathan is paying him so much attention, he goes with it. Nathan loves having fun and he has a great wingman in his best friend, Catch. His motives for dating Levi seemed a bit selfish, at least until we learn the real reason for him asking for the money from his grandma, but it was nice seeing him grow throughout the book and realize he wants something more than just having fun with Levi. It took me longer to warm up to Nathan because he was so secretive, but other than wanting to strangle him for hurting Levi, he wasn't that bad in the end.

Levi and Nathan had great chemistry and balanced each other quite nicely. I really liked the progression of their relationship since they took their time to move from friends to lovers.

I loved Mavis, Nathan's grandma. She was a hoot! And while some of the things she did had some unfortunate results, her heart was in the right place. I really liked Catch and Rich, Nathan's friends, and I really wouldn't say no to reading their story. *nudge nudge hint hint*

All in all, this was an enjoyable read. Fun, sweet, hot, with some light angst and a bit of a mystery that kept me entertained until the last page. Recommendable!

Off-Campus Setup had an interesting premise, one that you know right up front is going to cause major conflict at some point. Nathan’s grandmother is a total instigator, sticking her nose into everything and manipulating the whole situation as she pleases. Sometimes that’s fun, and others it was a little annoying.

I loved Levi’s character. He’s sweet and definitely not your stereotypical clueless cowboy from some hick town. Nathan at first comes across as kind of a jerk who’s only going along with his grandmother for selfish reasons—reasons that we aren’t privy to until almost the end of the book. His attitude changes quickly once he starts to fall for Levi—which you expect—though when he tries to back off to keep things strictly “a job” it makes him run hot and cold which I wasn’t a fan of, mostly because it is glaringly obvious that when the two of them are together that they’re meant for each other. Nathan is also more than what he seems—a smart guy who is protective and wants to give back to others.

Mavis, Nathan’s grandmother, is a bit over the top. She has her own hidden reasons for why she does what she does in the story to maneuver Levi and Nathan how she wanted, but just like Nathan’s reasons for going along with her plan we have no idea of why until the very end.

When Levi and Nathan are together and Nathan isn’t running cold, those are the parts I really enjoyed about the story. When he would get that “job” attitude, or when Mavis would be manipulating things…that’s when my annoyance would rise up. Once Nathan’s reasons for going along with things comes out it felt like much ado about something that there shouldn’t have been so much secrecy about. And as for what was driving Mavis, that kind of seemed a bit contrived and—in line with her character—an over the top way to go about things.

Overall, Off-Campus Setup was a good story, I just could have done without so many crazy manipulations behind everything (mostly from Mavis). Levi and Nathan are good together without needing all that extra interference beyond the first nudge to get them together. This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

Off-Campus Setup was really more than I thought it would be. I didn’t think that I would enjoy it as much as I did, but I was surprised, in a good way. You never know what paths we will take in life, sometimes we go on our own and sometimes we are steered towards one by some well-meaning but manipulative people. Keep that in mind when you read this book because it is important.

Levi and Nathan really were what the other needed. What may have started off as something else possibly turns into something more, but what that more is you will have to read to find out. It took me a bit to warm up to Nathan, and for good reason but once you start to see little things about him it was easy to warm up to him. Levi I just had a soft spot in my heart for him from the start. I just liked who he was, he didn’t change who he was and he came across very real. I need to take a moment and comment on Nathan’s grandma Mavis, she is well, she’s something special indeed. Remember that well –meaning but manipulative comment above? Well let’s just say she very well may be the queen of getting people to do what she wants, and her sense of style is one of a kind.

This is my first time reading this author, and I can say with ease that it won’t be the last time either. I love m/m romances and Off-Campus Setup was an enjoyable read and one that I hope others will try.

This is my first read by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. It's an interesting twist on a fake romance and also a bit of an opposites attract and coming of age love story. Levi and Nathan are likable characters and the chemistry between them is almost palpable. In fact, all the characters are interesting and even the minor ones add a little something to the story. The romance is both sweet and sexy as Levi and Nathan get to know each other. Levi is a little like a fish out of water as he tries to find his place in his new and unfamiliar world and Nathan is the typical party boy, just enjoying his youth. I loved the compromises between this pair as they find a happy medium together. A huge plus for me is the added bonus of clever and often hilarious dialogue and banter between characters. And Grandma Mavis! I absolutely loved the chain smoking, yellow-haired, crazily dressed Grandma Mavis. While the lengths this absolute hoot of a character went to in order to play matchmaker were a bit over the top, it all worked to create an engaging romance that was impossible to put down.

When I read the prologue, I thought I was going to be in for an angsty type of read, but it didn't take long to figure out that wasn't the case. As much as I love Levi and Nathan, hands down Mavis stole the show.

Levi's straight from Small Town Texas USA, freshly landed in Cali as a freshman at USC. He's quiet and unassuming, isn't the typical college student: doesn't drink and isn't in to the party scene. And then there's Nathan: he's the exact opposite of Levi: drinks, parties, and indulges in hookups. There's a side to Nathan that he doesn't show, but it's that hidden side that has him agreeing to the idea from his grandmother that he spends time showing Levi around campus and town.

I figured this story was nothing more than a matchmaking grandma trying to corral her grandson into settling down, but there's much more to the story than just that, but I won't divulge that information. Suffice it to say that Mavis has plenty, and I mean plenty of influence to do what she did on the level it happened. I like how the story ended up for Levi and Nathan, and I'm curious to know more about Catch and Rich.

Ms Vickers has done it again. I love her books, each one has a unique take on romance and this is no exception. Levi is your honest to goodness country boy who decides to attend college in California. Despite his assumption that everything was pre-organised, on his arrival a series of unforeseen hitches finds Levi lodging off campus with Grandma Mavis (and a more hilariously awesome grandma you have yet to meet!). Nathan, Levi's across the hall neighbour and Mavis' grandson, seems at first impression to be a bit of a lad - street smart, party going, couldn't care less type. Mavis asks Nathan a favour and the fun begins.
This story is witty, fast paced, heart wrenching, heart warming, and utterly irresistible, the relatively small cast of characters, beautifully balanced against the backdrop of a large college campus and the populous city it nestles within. Want to know more...? Nope - no spoilers - treat yourselves to this engaging read - one I highly recommend.

Hang on for an extended eight-second ride! This was my first read from Maria Vickers, and it won't be my last. The story grabbed me from the start and refused to let go, from poor Texas-born Levis's unfortunate welcome to California university life, to Nathan plowing into him while escaping from his grandmother's boarding house, to the moment of truth for the two young college students. Maria writes with a deft touch, creating engaging characters, two young men set on resisting each other and one colorful grandmother who's equally determined to push them together. There's enough humor to make it MM romantic comedy, finely balanced with young adult angst, sizzling sex scenes, and unexpectedly poignant moments that brought tears to my eyes. A perfect addition to your library if you enjoy great storytelling.

Levi is finally getting to pursue his dream. He has arrived at college with a plan. Until he finds he may not be able to live where he thought. Now he has to hurry or go back home.

Nathan knows it is time to grow up. He has not looked forward to living the life his parents have chosen. He wants to choose his future. When he and Levi crash into one another it is a jaw dropping, eye opener. Will the secrets come out and change the course?

Sweet and tender, this story starts out slow and picks up steam. These characters are learning to become the young adults they know they can be. What they find is they can be stronger as a team. Navigating emotions are always hard, it helps to have someone in your corner.

I love reading different takes in the romance genre. Maria Vickers has written a beautiful love story of polar opposites. When you get a city spoilt brat set up with a well-mannered country boy, what could possibly transpire?

Well, this story is hilariously witty, and heartwarming. Set on a college campus the characters Levi and Nathan have a lot of growing up to do and what better way to navigate themselves through these unchartered waters than with each other. What transpires from this set up is surprisingly sweet with a few secrets thrown into the mix. The instant connection these two boys have for one another is undeniably curious and fun.

But the character I loved the most was Mavis who Nathan's grandmother and the setup guru. She is hilarious and full of surprises for these two boys coming together.

If you love a good college stories then this book is definitely for you.

Amount of sex 3 / 5
How explicit 3 / 5
Story 4 / 5
Overall: 4 / 5

Off-Campus Setup is a sweet and steamy MM romance from author Maria Vickers. The story centers on Levi, who grew up on a ranch in Texas. He always wanted to go to USC in California ever since he was young. When he arrived, the school made a mistake and had Levi down as a commuter. With no rooms to spare, Levi had to find somewhere else to live. He finally secured a place about two blocks from campus and met Nathan, the owner of the house’s grandson.

I enjoyed the storyline and quickly got sucked into the drama, humor, as well as the steamy scenes between Levi and Nathan. I loved the twists and read it in one sitting.

This book was very enjoyable!
I loved Levi and Nathan.
But Mavis was my favorite!!

The book was written very well! The characters we developed great!

It was a really good story! And very funny sometimes!

So Levi is cowboy from Texas and he moves all the way to California for school.
Well somehow the school messed up with his dorm, and he has to find somewhere to live.
Mavis rents rooms in her house to collage students and Levi finds himself on her front porch, only to get knocked over by Nathan..

They start up a friendship and try to fight their feelings for each other.

It was such a good book!

Strangers set up to fall in LOVE

Levi has left his home of Texas to attend college in California. But from the time he stepped on the plane everything went wrong.

So when the registrar office at the college tells him he doesn't have a dorm she leads him to Mavis' doorstep. And is literally knocked off his feet by Nathan.

Nathan has secrets but also needs money. So when he goes to his grandmother and asks for the money she offers him a deal instead.

"Show the new student around, date him" Nathan takes the offered deal.

But this set-up is turned upside down the more Nathan gets to know Levi.

Wow where to start? First this is a new author to me and I couldn’t get enough. I need to back and read her other books.

Levi a good ole country boy from Texas moves to California for college. Once he’s there things go from bad to worse. But what he doesn’t know is that someone is there to help him.

Nathan is a spoiled Cali boy. But he’s also a lot more then what people see. He’s such an amazing guy with a heart of gold.

When these two meet is doesn’t go well. But as they get to know one another the connection is there. It was such an opposites attract, sweet love story. An I hope we can hear more of them in the future.

Sometimes I get weird dreams or ideas and it turns into something more. For this story, the words flowed and the book practically wrote itself. I'll be the first to admit that it probably isn't for everyone. Mavis is crazy, Levi and Nathan are complete opposites that need to find common ground, and the situations are a little out there at times. I'm proud of the book and how it turned out. I love the characters and where they took me. I got to write about a small Texas town, Scurry, which is just outside of Kaufman about an hour from Dallas. I do suggest everyone read to the end and give it a chance though.

Personally, I find everything Mavis and Nathan did truly disgusting. This is not how you're supposed to treat people. People are not puppets and this is not The Sims. By the end of the book I couldn't stand Mavis and I had to skip some parts. Nathan is pretty much the same. Same goes for Catch. I felt sorry for Levi and for the first time, I wished the main characters wouldn't end up together. Levi deserved better. The only other character I liked is Rich. I would love to see Levi and Rich together.

I liked how uncomplicated the book describes gay characters. No big deal, completely, totally normal. As it should be. As it is. But the story itself is so full of logic holes, full of very irrational behavior, full of actions that are not believable and feel like only being done to keep the plot going... I read it through because I wanted to see their happy end but I didn't enjoy it much, especially the psycho grandmother.

A MM story that I couldn't put down
This sexy story of love reminded me that love is love regardless of who the characters are. I loved reading about these two college guys meet, spend time together and find they can't live without each other.
The twist that brings them together is brilliant.

I thought this book was a fun, fast read. Levi was adorable and Nathan cared so much even if he didn’t show. The grandma Mavis was a devilish and nosy character in the best way. I enjoyed the twist at the end, definitely surprised me. Overall a cute and enjoyable read for me. Also a plus I got to meet the author at a signing and she is a wonderful human.
