The themes are pretty generic and readers would find them relatable.

This book is a compilation of 73 poems. This is more of an anthology or you could say a collaborated piece of work where different poets have written different styles of poetry. Uma Sudhindra, Binod Panda, Trupti Kalamdani, Dr. Shruti Arabatti and Saurin Desai are the main contributors in this book. There are some art pieces by Shripad Bhalero to compliment some of the poems.

Each poet have their own theme where they express their emotions through the caricature of words. Even though the themes vary from one poet to another, overall, the book caters to the theme solitude and obsessions.

Uma’s style is writing more of coherent poems with easy language that hits you right when you read it. The poems on the surface appear to be simple but the meaning are skin deep. She switches between different themes and most of all I liked the poem ‘A Restless Soul’.

Binod has more of a serious tone in his poems and he also writes more about life and it’s different stages.

Trupti has written poems mostly on love, relationships and self-love. Her poems were in accordance to cycle of life where you go through different phases and acquire new experiences and then with time you grow stronger and start to believe in yourself more than ever.

Shruti’s poems were engrossing and she played with her where you wouldn’t understand the meaning behind the words right away, you’ll have to read them again and again to uncover the true meaning.

Saurin’s poems had to do with reality and everyday life. His poems were short but there were deep meanings behind the words. ‘Regrets’ was one my favourite.

Overall, I liked the poems. Each poet have used a different style and they have talked about the themes which are pretty generic and readers would find them relatable.

MY FINAL VERDICT

This book would be good for beginner readers who are venturing into the genre of poetry and if you have a penchant for short poems with easy language, then of course you would love it.

What is it about poetry that makes you contemplate about life? I have always thought that poetry is something mysterious. It always comes with hidden clues and codes that you have to crack in order to understand it. Once you crack it... Voila! The deepest secrets of the universe are out in front of your eyes.

Solitude and Other Obsessions is a compilation of 73 poems by 5 poets. One will have to decode the poems of these 5 poets and when you do it you'll know that life has more meaning than you ever could think of.

The poets are Uma Sudhindra, Binod Kumar Panda, Trupti Kalamdani, Dr. Shruti Arabatti and Saurin Desai. Each of the poets have their very own unique style of portraying their feelings and views. Also, they have very distinctive things to talk about. So in an all, the poets cover all the necessary sentiments one can think of. Like Uma Sudhindra talks vividly about an army man's life and tales of the picturesque Ladakh; Binod Kumar Panda muses about the various segments of life; Trupti Kalamdani (her poems are my favourite) talks about prejudice and various social issues through a very unique storytelling style; Dr. Shruti Arabatti speaks of dreams, ambitions and death; and Saurin Desai projects his feelings about unrequited love, solitude and he also spares his views on freedom of the media (through his touching poem about the infamous incident in Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris).

My personal favourites from the book are Life In A Metro, Snap, The Fraternal Bond,Truly Yours, Wedding Bells, B4 The After, The End, Moonshine and Alcohol On Prescription.

The Solitude and other Obsession is a book by five poets, Uma Sudhindra, Binod Kumar Panda, Trupti Kalamdani, Dr Shruti Arabatti and Saurin Desai. Each of them has written wonderful poems, expressed their thoughts beautifully. each one of them has their own style of writing, own way of expressing their thoughts. They have written on wonderful topics, My favourite is This is mine, Truly yours, mirage, a restless Soul and many more. The language used by each one of them is crisp, simple and attractive. Each poem in this book has its own depth, it’s own meaning. I loved the out of the box topic chosen by the authors. Uma has written poems about travel, memories, soldiers message which I loved. Her writings are simple and friendly. Then comes Binod, who wrote on pain, life, Rival. His style of writing is heavy, but one will fall in love with his poems. Than comes Trupti, her poems are about Love, self Love, Her poem Who am I is my Favourite. Her writing style is smooth and crisp. each of her poems will touch your heart. Dr. Shruti’s Poem is full of Imagination. I loved the topics she chose. All that Matters, Finding Home, are my favourite. Her writing is little quirky. Saurin’s poems are like a reality check. her writing style is wonderful, so are her topics.

Also also, I loved the cover of the book. It’s AWESOME

Overall, this book is a wonderful creation, the depth of the poems, the way it is described, simple language is amazing. Love Poetry? Go for It?

After a long time I read a poetry book and I must say that it was a good one. The book is written by five poets, each of them wrote every poem in a very unique way. Some of the poems can be read in a single flow, some of them need to read twice to understand the real meaning and the inner thoughts. All the poems have unique taste, some of them full of love, some are filled with pain! All the poems are good and proper in the way of choosing words.

Some of them can inspire-

” Why do we fall?

To pick ourselves up, et, all…”

I loved this poem too much (Why do we Fall by Dr. Sruti Arabatti) very much.

Every poet has done their job properly.

The language is clear!

The pictures that included in the book made this book more attractive.

The cover of the book is very attractive and colourful.

The title is proper!

For someone like me who's not so much into poetry, this book took me by surprise and a pleasant one at that. It took me a while to absorb a few, while a few others made sense seamlessly. A very good attempt from all the authors involved. I personally loved, "Regret", "You Say That's A Rainbow?", "Alcohol on prescription" and "Fiddler of the womb" to name a few. One of my dear friends Saurin Desai is co author and I strongly reccomend that you all buy and read it. Available on Amazon.

Solitude and other obsessions
Paperback: 128 pages
Publisher: Notion Press, Inc.; 1 edition (23 August 2017)
Language: English
Writer: Uma, Binod, Trupti, Shruti & Saurin
We are a species fueled by obsessions. Every human achievement, and every infamy, is the result of an obsession that tormented, possessed and consumed. This is a selection of poetry about solitude and other obsessions that have distracted, driven, destroyed and / or defined us. Usually poetry gives us a much-needed break from rigorous fiction reading and lengthy read. It is like a breath of fresh air and makes our mood lite and delivers serious message with an ease.
Uma Sudhindra: Uma’s poem is based various issues and the once that describe the pain of a soldier and his loved once is beautifully expressed. Her travel description is surreal and I have been Rumi fan her poem based on Rumi captures RUMI’s essence. But my favorite poem is “in the lap of death”- Uma have described on of the feared and dreaded aspects of life with an ease. The words are gentle and leave a lasting impression.
Binod Panda: Binod’s poem are sort of serious ones and while reading them it is evident that these are inspired from his life lessons and experience. Binod has used simple language and emphasized more on the meaning of the poems. Life death pain joy are part of life and they are well described though my favorite is mirage and one can easily corelate with Binod’s words we as an individual have long lost our dreams and aspirations while chasing others dreams and we are at times caught in the web from where it is nearly difficult to get back to our original self.
Trupti Kalamdani: Trupti’s work are emotional ones and generally deals with relationship and self-belief. I particularly liked the comeback as it was refreshing and was about self-discovery and self-belief. We as an individual need to vouch for our individuality. The rose sans thorns deal with the agony and pain of being in a relationship and tells the truth in a subtle way. Trupti’s work seems to represent a cyclic process of being down to discovering to evolving and the rebirth. Well phrased and versed poems.
Dr. Shruti Arabatti: Shruti’s work is enthralling there is hidden meaning in her every poem and every verse. She has decided to write about some trivial issues prevailing in the society. U R is one such poem she has beautifully described how we crush young once dream and let him die within. Finding home is again a beautiful poem describing how far we have come chasing a dream we have long lost our interests our home and our family. The End summarizes Shruti’s work and life cycle and the reality of life.
Saurin Desai: Saurin’s poems was by far with what I corelated the sorrow of an individual and the reality of living in metro no matter how crowded or surrounded you are with people but you would be alone if it isn’t the right place. Regrets is about the time that we didn’t took in account the time where we fooled around. Saurin’s poems are about the individual stuck and trying to rediscover himself. The pain is beautifully described and well versed. His work isn’t complicated and will compel to read further.

Solitude and other obsessions' is a collective effort of five poets. The five poets have bared their personalities in the form of poems. All the poetry pieces resonate with the human sentiments.

Uma Sudhindra's poems, written in a traditional stanza form, talk about memories, lost relationships among other things. The author wishes to seek respite from the monotony of life by enjoying a day or two amidst the picturesque mountains. She has also penned down a fitting tribute to honour the soldiers who are relentless guarding the borders day and night.

Binod Panda has employed a distinct style in his poems. His poems, though short, have a great emotional depth. One thing I have noticed is that, most of his pieces end with their title. They do not dwell particular theme and are abstract in nature.

Trupti Kalamdani's verses deal with a multitude of themes such as freedom, gender inequality, caste discrimination etc. My personal favourite was 'Two to Tango' were she urges women to empower themselves rather than blaming the other sex for their woes. She has put both men and women, on an equal scale and emphasised that they are two sides of a same coin and one is incomplete without the other.

Dr.Shruthi's poems are difficult to comprehend in a single sitting, you have to reread them to assimilate the meaning. My favourite one was 'Finding home' where people are misguided by the illusion called 'Home'. She has kept the words and language of her poetry pieces simple.

Written in a simple language, Saurin Desai's poems are all about sorrows of the human mind. I really liked the verses 'Solitude' and 'Deities'. In the former one, he has elucidated how a being feels detached even after being surrounded by people constantly. The mind becomes so used to that state, that it becomes quite difficult to come out of it. 'Deities' has depicted how we are enslaved to our own beliefs and how it hinders our quest towards the pursuit of truth and knowledge.

Readers who have a penchant for poetry should definitely grab this book.

REVIEW -

COVER - It is a blend of different colours just like our minds and a peacock feather denoting solitude and other obsessions.

TITLE - once you finish reading the book the title is really apt.

This book has been compiled by 5 poets and an artist. Each section touches different parts of memories and subjects. Themes keep varying from life to nature, human relations. Every poets work starts with a small quote by personalities followed by an intricate artwork. The poems vary in length. All of the poems have been written beautifully and one can definitely relate to them.

Uma-

FAVOURITE POEM - Captured moments.

Uma captures every poem with words simple and transparency of it's beauty is seen. the poems are based on her army life. Mostly long poems.

This book is the result of 5 brilliant poets collaborating. The result is handful of emotions blending together to form a beautiful quilt through words. There is no particular theme or sequence in which the poems are arranged, the random words will take your mind to the soldiers once and bounce back to your partner the very next. The very first poem turned out to be my favorite along with “A constellation of perceptions” The poets have made a good attempt to mirror the obsessions of heart reflected by humans.

All the words we read or speak are mere combinations of 26 alphabets, yet they are relative to the reader, speaker, listener and writer. Poems function in a similar fashion, so they give a different meaning every time you read them. Each poem of this book gives a whole new meaning to the concept of poetry. While some words had a good flow and easy to follow, others had be reading and re-reading to understand the context of line. Both are appreciated equally as one style of writing would have certainly got monotonous for reader to follow. Poetry lovers – grab your copy today itself!

This is a compilation of 73 brilliant poems written by 5 different authors. What I also liked from this book is the presence of few paintings that were done by Shripad Bhalerao which has perfectly complimented the book.

I could clearly see the difference and variations of each poet as they brought out their best with their writing. While Uma has brought the best with the poems in Ladakh which I could very well connect with since I had been to the "Divine Paradise on Earth" myself, her poems on soldiers were equally a good one. I was glad after reading her poems since I shared a similar mindset.

Binod talked about mixed emotions whereas Trupti focused on melancholy(is what I feel). Shruti was at her best with her collection of poems where I liked "Why do we fall?" in particular. Saurin again brought out some brilliant reflections of his mind.

As a composer of poems myself, I felt really glad after going through different styles in composing a poem but with one motto "connect to the readers" which has worked really well in this beautiful compilation.

All of the poems were beautiful and an awesome read. Though I liked all of them, my favorites were the ones by Trupti Kalamdani, especially, Two to Tango and Wedding Bells.

Uma Sudhindra's poems were more inclined towards the nature, and soldiers. A Soldier's Message was my most favorite one from her.

Bindo Panda's poems were reflective, short and beautiful, especially A Few More Moments...

As I already said, Trupti Kalamdani is my favourite one from the lot. Her poems range from social issues to love to heartbreak, and her writing is absolutely enchanting.

Dr. Shruti's poems were deep and mesmerizing. My favorite one from her was All That Matters.

Lastly, Saurin Desai's poems were short, meaningful and full of wonder. My favorite, without doubt, was Alcohol On Prescription.

The artistic representations by Shripad Bhalerao only added to the beauty of an already beautiful collection and I loved reading it!

Poetry is an art which seems never satisfied or fulfilled. No matter how much a poet contributes it never feels fully achieved. The readers take it upon themselves to explore, extrapolate the common themes, ideas being judged by many. However, when it comes to abstract art of poetry it's beauty is unmatched. It is as the wise ones say, "never mess with a poet, for you can repent it."
Cover us beautiful, simple yet crisp.
Title is perfect & matches the theme of the book.
Language is crisp, beautiful & words are well chosen.
Punctuations & synchronisation are well achieved.
Poems are beautiful, well written, well presented & well researched upon.
The testament provided in the form of sketches & illustrations are worth commending upon. The subtle nature of the poems accompanied by the rhythmic touch is what impresses a reader the most.
However, it can still be improvised. Nevertheless, loved reading them.
A book worth reading & recommending to all the readers.

I have always loved poetry. Notwithstanding my name, every poetry has a soul to it. The poets pour their feelings into the words and get it out for the world to savor.

It may be simple or complex, structured or freewheeling - all that matters is that the poetry affects us emotionally to feel what the poet might be feeling when he/she penned it.

Each poet in this book, Solitude and Other Obsessions published by Notion Press has his/her way of expressing themselves and I have found one poem of each of them to appeal to me.

Among the poems the ones which I like are:

Uma's Butterfly Lessons
Binod's Revival
Trupti's The Rose Sans Thorns
Dr. Shruti's Send Me......
Saurin's This___ is Mine
The poems are written in simple language and they don't require you to get into too many complexities even if there are lots of lines to reflect on. This makes it easier for everyone to learn to start reading poems and not be scared by heavy meanings. Each poem hints at personal musings.

Book Title: Solitude and Other Obsessions
Author: Uma
Format: Paper Back
Total Number of Pages: 128
Published By : Notion Press
Price: INR 199
ISBN-10: 1947697412
ISBN-13: 978-1947697416

Inside the book:
Poetry is one of the most powerful forms of writing because it takes the language, a language we believe we know, and transforms it. Suddenly the words do not sound the same or mean the same. The pattern of the sentences sound new and melodious. It is truly another language for the writer and the reader. No poem can be read in the same way, because the words mean something different to each of us.
In this book, all of the poems are absolutely fantastic.

Poems by Uma about nature, Binod's short and sweet poems, Trupti's poems on the present social taboos and issues, Shruti's heart touching poems, Saurin's novelty in poems added with Shripad's awesome art made the book a worth and an unforgettable read.

SOLITUDE and other OBSESSIONS is a thoughts and imagination treasury of Uma, Binod, Trupti, Shruti and Saurin. All the five poets have done an amazing work, they have compiled 73 poems in totals that reflect the emotions and feelings.

A human mind is always preoccupied with various and numerous thoughts. From man to woman, boy to girl, minor to stripling every humankind is indulged with obsession, some people refrain but some they cant and become obsessed.

Poems in the garner have a high and rich vocabulary, themes of the poem are multifarious. Poetry is something that has a power to control the mind, I was enjoying reading these poems on various topics, the book is full of awestruck and awesome pieces of poems of poets. Some of my personal favorite from this pile is Binod Panda’s collection every poem has a story behind even years are mentioned, Life: With A smile amazing, Two to Tango, Who Am I, Send Me, Flute, The Light Princess, and In A Lap Of Death are few titles touched my soul.

Title and cover both didn’t make a place in my heart, but yes poems have left the print in my heart!

Highly recommended to all poetry lovers.

Poetry has always been my favourite part to review on as it comes directly from poet's emotions.
This book is a collection of 73 spoken word poetry.Written by 5 people: - Uma,Binod,Trupti,Shruti, Saurin.
Each poet has his own section in the book where he depicts a particular emotion. Now I wont specify allt he details abouy the book as it was would lower the excitement to buy it.
What I feel about this book?
I have reviewed and read a lot of poetry book be it a traditional form or spoken word.Even thought the content of this book is good I didn't feel I could really connect to it.I felt it was written from the mind rather from the heart. And that makes a huge difference really. The language is easy, but the words need some shake to bring out that feeling to hit someone's heart instead of making it a little boring.
May be it would bring a feel if someone performs it rather than just having a read of it.
Completed in just one sitting.
I would overall rate it a 3/5

The cover of the book is very artistic and looks really attractive. Solitude and Other Obsessions" by five contributing poets - Uma, Trupti, Binod Shruti and Saurin is a beautiful collection of thought provoking poems.
The choice of words, the depth in the phrases and hidden message behind each poem is what makes this book a treat for all poetry lovers.
Not being a fan of poetry, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the poems as much as I enjoy reading stories. But to my surprise, I absolutely loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys simple, yet amazing poems.

I have been staying away from poetry from quite sometime now mainly because the idea of 'poetry' seems to be lost. With social media being the new 'book',  our means of communication is rather short-lived. We're always racing against time and if something takes up more than 2 minutes of your time then it's not worth it. Modern poetry has been receiving a lot of criticism lately but I'll delve into that in another blog post.

Solitude and Other Obsessions is a collection of poems by 5 different poets. Each poet has expressed their emotions through their unique style of writing and from, covering several themes. Uma Sudhindra, Binod Panda, Trupti Kalamdani, Dr.Shruti Arabatti and Saurin desai are the poets who have contributed in the compilation of 73 poems for this book. The title of the book is self-explanatory. It talks of solitude, and how humans have been coping up with it since time immemorial and how it shapes our personality, instills passion or crumbles our very existence.

Some of the poems are accompanied with an illustration done by the artist Shripad Bhalerao who believes humans are the most complex creatures in the universe, and who tries to decode this very belief by finding a connection between his paintings, writings, and sculpting. His art pieces are vivid, often oscillating between the real and the imaginary.

The beauty of poetry is in its subjectivity. Each poem is quite different, and resonates deeply.  Some give you a warm, fuzzy feeling, others make you feel the pain. This collection of poems is a great read for people who are new to the world of poetry, and who wish to get an essence of what poetry does to the heart and mind.
