Duane Boehm grew up on a farm outside of Petersburg, Illinois. All the time spent driving a tractor gave him plenty of opportunity to let his imagination run wild and not tear up too much equipment. The two passions he developed early in life were the love of playing guitar and reading books.

He eventually moved to a mini-farm outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife and replaced planting corn with trees and raising dogs. For a number of years he worked as an IT consultant and continued with being a part-time musician and songwriter. He dabbled in writing short stories with the idea in the back of his mind that someday he would write a novel. One Christmas after watching "A Christmas Carol", he was inspired to begin his journey as a novelist.

A quite enjoyable book to while away a few hours. It sees Caleb being on the run from his home and, after teaming up with a stranger on the road, finds himself on a horse ranch in Wyoming. Quick and easy to read, without being earth-shattering.

This book was refreshing. No hardcore violence, no swearing/cussing, and so low key on the physical (s-e-x) aspect that you had to assume that did it -which was fine with me.

Caleb
Caroline
Claire
Joey

They were all enjoyable characters to read and get to know. The main part of the story was set in the vastness of the Wyoming territory, something that's close to my heart.

Caleb chose to leave his home due to an unfortunate situation with his brother-in-law. He came across Joey and they formed a friendship that was seen and felt throughout the book. Enter Caroline and Claire on a wild mustang horse ranch in Wyoming and you have the makings of a beautiful love story in the people and the land.

Some gunfighting violence and killings, but nothing graphic and over the top. The story was set in the late 1800's when the law was not as prominent as it is today.

Not Bad

It is a good story that picks up the further you get into it. The dialogue was a bit sparse however.

Good western in the old style of cowboys, horses and shoot 'em up battles

A very entertaining and sometimes humorous story about repenting for past and behavior and finding a new life to carry on in the Old West. Dawn's story is believable and keeps pages turning to it's happy ending without becoming sordid or maudlin and without any bad language or gratuitous sex scenes. A very good read.

I have been an avid reader of Mr. Boehm's for quiet some time and each story appears to get better than the previous ones. This story of Caleb and his wonderful exploits is so fulfilling that I was completely mesmerized from beginning to end. I definitely love exciting adventures of our "real" old west and this one has all the gaps completely filled.

Five stars and more! This story is exciting from beginning to end with plenty of ongoing gunfights and romancing. I found this exceptionally well written story exceeding my greatest expectations. There is never any dead spots from the very first paragraph thru the final exciting episode.
The character selections were perfectly descriptive of what I
look for in any story of old western folklore adventures. I was completely engulfed in the storylines created by Mr. Boehm's apparent knowledge, or researching, of real old western adventures. He leaves no stones unturned in his descriptiveness of his intention to pacify his readers greatest desires.
I, without any hesitation, recommend this story, or any other novel by this fantastic author, as he certainly is impressive in his exceptionally heartwarming storytelling abilities. There is an ongoing warmth of exciting romance in this book, and the author goes above and beyond in his quest to satisfy the person enjoying his handiwork. Don't read this story, unless you are sure you can put it aside until the final episode is completed!😂

This book was almost a DNF about halfway through, but I had a mild interest in learning how it all turned out for Caleb, so I stuck around until the end. The main reason I almost put this down, and the main reason for the two-star rating, is that I found the character of Caroline to be very unlikeable. I know she softened and was basically a different woman by the end, but she was so detestable for the first half of the book that I found reading about her to be utterly intolerable. But I liked Caleb, Joey, and Claire, and that was enough to keep me reading.

Another issue was the constant use of modern language in the dialogue. I seriously doubt that anyone said, "Let's get the party started" 100+ years ago, but maybe they did. Overall, the dialogue felt like something from modern times, not a period piece.

The book had potential, but it just wasn't my kind of Western.

A Tale of Horses and Heroes

Caleb is on the run from Tennessee after a lethal dispute with his brother in law. Crossing the Mississippi and meeting up with a ranch foreman, called Joey, Caleb doesn't stop until he reaches a horse ranch in Wyoming Territory. The ranch run by two women, a mother and daughter, is in trouble from local cattle ranchers who want all the grazing land for cattle not the horses. After a difficult start, Caleb proves his worth as a horse man handy with guns, despite his odd Southern ways. This is a western in the style of Louis L'Amour, Duane Boehm weaves a good tale.

This was a quick easy read. A Civil War veteran leaves his farm home in Tennessee looking to get lost. Caleb travels northwest and meets up with a guy wearing only his red long johns and cowboy hat. Joey and Caleb travel Joey's route west encountering a little trouble along the way, but they become friends. There are several spots on the Oregon Trail that are mentioned, some that I know exactly where they are. It would have been nice to have a map corresponding with the route that Caleb and then Caleb and Joey took across the US to the Fort Laramie, Wyoming area. This is still the uncivilized west where men have to protect what is theirs.

The characters in this story are well developed and their human experiences are believable. Caleb left his native Tennessee after he killed his brother-in-law. A chance meeting with Joey on his journey west found Caleb on a horse ranch run by Caroline and her mother. There was conflict with neighboring ranchers because of the mustangs they were selling to the army. The sexual conflict between Caroline and Caleb is tangible as well as with her mother and Joey. There is a sense of reality in the daily life of the family and ranch hands. There is some violence with rustlers and villains and romance between the two couples.
All in all a very interest story that I would recommend to any reader.
Duane Boehm is a skilled writer and story teller.

So well-written , and easy to read . If you love westerns you must read this book !

I saw the rating of this book and I was so pleased to find out the rating was accurate five stars all away . The heroes are everyday people and the hair ones are two . The story is accurate and believable , as our the characters also. There is plenty of action and romance and a good dose of humor and suspense . . Once you start reading it becomes hard to put it down and leave for very long .

DB. has. penned a western novel that begins in Tennessee and ends at a ranch in Wyoming. The ranch is owned by a single woman and it is a wild horse ranch. The lady has nothing but trouble until the man from Tennessee arrives. They agree to work together, but their relationship is shakey. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DzeHS.

Classic old west action as a range war breaks out over wild horses

A stacked justice system forces Calib to leave his Tennessee horse ranch home and head west. A chance encounter brings him to a ranch struggling with greedy neighbors and threats of killing off the wild horses that form the basis of selling remounts to the US Cavalry. A page-turner with a twist of romance and well worth the time.

Recovery

When hit with personal tragedy the hardest thing can be to recover. In a set of unlikely circumstances Caleb Berg finds himself on the run. After hooking up with a robbery victim Caleb journeys to Wyoming Territory where he not only finds a new life but a new love who needs healing as well. Strange how it takes a range war to bring healing. A good story of life on the frontier as it could easily have been.

A good read, although the love interest was very close to any Hallmark movie. Very predictable. The story line was good and the writing was good as well. Not Elmer Kelton, but not bad.
