Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the broth. And let me tell you, this broth is in trouble. Get ready for a Southern showdown.
The residents of Cottonwood, Kentucky are sent into a tizzy when the Culinary Channel comes to town to film an episode of Southern Home Cookin’ with celebrity chef Frank Von Lee.
Especially Sheriff Kenni Lowry.
Her mama’s award-winning chicken pot pie is what brought Frank to town, and they don’t make hair in the South bigger than her mama’s ego after the news.
When Frank Von Lee is found dead from food poisoning and the most likely culprit is Mama’s chicken pot pie, Kenni’s poppa, the former sheriff, comes back from the Great Beyond to assist in the investigation.
But nothing’s prepared Kenni for such a personal tie to a case, and she finds herself pushing the limits of the laws she’s sworn to protect.
Beloved cozy mystery author Tonya Kappes is bringing her charming world to the screen!
The Hallmark Channel is thrilled to announce a television series in development based on Tonya’s wildly popular 40-book series, A Camper & Criminals Mystery.
A celebrated Amazon All-Star and USA Today bestselling author, Tonya has written over 180 southern cozy mysteries filled with heart, humor, and unforgettable small-town characters. Her novels, known for their southern charm and rich emotional storytelling, have been praised by readers and critics alike, earning her a coveted spot as a Woman's World Book Club Pick six times.
Writing full-time from her camper, Tonya crafts worlds where mystery, friendship, and a little mischief collide — and now, her stories will come to life for cozy mystery lovers everywhere.
The synopsis is right, “This book’s so delicious it’ll make your mouth water and leave you hankerin’ for more.” Those television people are in town and you just know there is going to be trouble.
Sheriff Kenni Lowry’s mama makes a scrumptious chicken pot pie and celebrity chef Frank Von Lee from the t.v. show Southern Home Cookin’ has come to town to check it out. He is also visiting another recipe contestant in a nearby town before he makes his final decision of which one to feature on his show. It is very surprising when the chef is found dead in his hotel room with a chicken pot pie nearby. Kenni’s mom becomes the prime suspect, and it is going to take everything Kenni and her ghostly grandfather can do to clear her of the crime. Some of the things they uncover are pretty shocking.
While reading this book I was reminded of a series of books written by J. J. Cook (Joyce and Jim Lavene), the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries. In that series, like this one, the protagonist is assisted by her grandfather that happens to be a ghost. I have been missing those authors and that series. As I get further and further into this series by Tonya Kappes the feelings I had about the Lavene’s stories are rallying with this one.
This time with Kenni’s mother seemingly the only suspect, she is removed from the case, with her now boyfriend Finn taking it over. That doesn’t mean Kenni is done investigating, she just needs to be a little more careful so the mayor doesn’t get wind of what she is doing. I love the interplay between Kenni and her Poppa. He has had her back since she became sheriff. But, it is getting harder and harder to keep his ghost a secret. There are too many times she has been caught talking to “herself”. All the characters Ms. Kappes has created in this story are interesting and the main ones are very engaging.
The plot lines this time are full of goodies, fraudulent handicapped parking passes, a pop-up botox clinic, the antics of Kenni and her mama checking out the other recipe contestant (be prepared to laugh out loud), and the murder of chef Frank Von Lee. Tonya Kappes twists it all together to make one heck of a story.
Filled with Southern charm, humor, delightful characters, a smidgen of romance, and a well-plotted mystery Six Feet Under is an absolute must-read.
If this is a new series to you, start and the beginning, sit back, read and enjoy. You can thank me later 🙂
You just can't miss with a Tonya Kappes mystery. Her talent from writing a whodunit, and her southern charm, always make for a fun read. SIX FEET UNDER is total proof of that!
Hey Y'all!! Did you hear the latest gossip in Cottonwood? NO??? Well, I heard at Tina's that you can get your crows feet filled in for $25 at a Botox party, people are hanging fake handicap tags in their cars (and they're PINK), the sheriff's mother is a murder suspect, and...wait, what??? Kenni's mom killed someone? When a celebrity chef is poisoned with what SEEMS to be Mrs. Lowry's famous chicken pot pie, the mayor kicks Kenni off the homicide case because she's too close to the number one suspect! The sheriff can't even help clear her own mama's name...or can she? With the help of Poppa, the ghost of her grandpa, some great spy work by her best friend Jolene, and even an impromptu cake baking class, Kenni finds out there's a lot more going on in Cottonwood than meets the eye. There are lots of twists and turns and even some red herrings (you'll think you've guess who the killer is...but just you wait) in this well planned mystery! This 4th book in the Kenni Lowry mystery series is just as fun and entertaining as the others. Full of Southern charm and engaging characters, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series! I voluntarily reviewed this book via NetGalley. #HeneryPress #NetGalley
This kindle e-book novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book 4 of 10
Kennie Lowery, the sheriff, has to find out truth of a murder. It takes time but she clears her mother as a suspect. Then a suicide leads to a dead body with a note. Then she comes across a man who has a motive to kill.
I would recommend this novella and author to readers of romantic family and friends adventure mystery novels. 2024
Kenni's mom is super excited, her award winning Chicken Pot Pie is going to be tasted by an important food critic. If all goes well she'll be featured on a national level and on television to boot. When said food critic ends up dead in his room, a Pot Pie close by, Kenni's mom is the main suspect. It looks as if he tasted the pie and was writing a scathing review when he died, which would mean the end of her moms growing food aspirations. Kenni knows her mom is innocent but who else would have something to gain from his death. When the town decides she might be biased she hands over the investigation to Finn and figures she will look into things on the sly. While looking into suspects she comes across an illegal handicap parking ring and a shady cheap botox pop up. With these new crimes coming out of the woodwork can Kenni find the time to clear her mothers name? It also looks like things are heating up between her and Finn although her ghostly grandfather would be okay if they weren't. This is truly a fun read filled with a terrific cast of characters and that is what keeps me coming back for more.
I received an ARC of this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A new Kenni Lowry mystery is something I can’t pass up.
I love the idea of a female sheriff and Kenni takes the cake. She’s tough yet vulnerable, especially when her mother butts into her business, and smart too. And she’s falling in love! The new romance is going to be put to the test though. A new murder case puts her mother at the top of the list of suspects and she’s tempted to go outside her legal boundaries to clear her mother’s name. She could use a little help from the other side of the grave and her poppa is happy to oblige.
This series never gets old. There’s a bit of romance, a juicy murder, a sprinkling of the paranormal, and a whole lot of southern flavor and shenanigans. All the fixins you need for a fun cozy mystery.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
This series is a favorite of mine. It has everything a cozy needs - humor, a good mystery, not too much drama, and - of course - a loyal pet. Ok, that last one may not be important to everyone, but I love it when pets are included in books. One thing that makes this series unique is that Kenni, being a sheriff, actually has a valid reason to investigate murders. This creates a little bit of conflict of interest when her mother becomes the main suspect, along with somehow being tangled up in other minor cases at the same time. Overall it was a highly enjoyable addition to a wonderful series.
The Culinary Channel is coming to Cottonwood, Kentucky in the 4th book of Kenni Lowry series. Frank Von Lee will be interviewing Kenni Lowry's Mother for her chicken pot pie. Jenni knows that will be problems when the ghost of Poppa shows up. Poppa only appears when there is trouble brewing in Cottonwood. There fake handicap parking permit showing up in the area and secret Botox parties in the town. Frank's body is discovered and a chicken pot pie nearby. Mama is seen the area and she refused to give an alibi. Mama becomes a person of interest and the mayor removes Kenni from the investigation. Will Kenni find answers to the problems before her romance ends? I recommend this book and series.
Disclosure: Many thanks to Henery Press for my copy for review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I received an advance copy of 'Six Feet Under' in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first Tonya Kappes story. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I'll admit that at the start of the story when the sheriff's 'Pop' appears, I was slightly hesitant as to whether or not this would be the type of book I would enjoy. It very quickly became apparent that I was going to enjoy the book, and I ended up finishing it in one sitting. I found the main characters to be extremely likeable, and although I didn't think the book was hilarious, it was definitely amusing.
I'd quite like to read some more from this author - I like that it was a mystery but with a little difference - I loved the character of 'Pop,' and I am intrigued to find out if the sheriff ever tells Finn about him.
Poppa's ghost is back and that means someone's gonna die! But, this time, the suspect is none other than Sheriff Kenni Lowry's mama with the motive, means, and opportunity.
Six Feet Under is the fourth book in this engaging cozy mystery series with paranormal elements set in small town Kentucky. Its fun and quirky and delivers an engaging mystery while its at it. I find each book works alright standalone, but there are ongoing series elements like Kenni's romance with Finn and a few other mild relationship and character mentions.
The story focuses on a cooking celebrity coming to town to critique mama's chicken pot pie only to die of food poisoning when he samples some of the said pie and prepared to deliver a less than flattering review. Others might have a horse in the race, but it's Kenni's mother who seems to be suspect number one. Kenni is reeling from the implications and from being too connected to the case to be allowed to work it. Will the fledgling romance with Finn survive him seeing her wrestle with temptation about the evidence and him being placed in the lead investigative role.
There's not as much angst as one might suspect with such a situation and there is plenty of Mama Lowry's over the top antics. And, the murder isn't the only crime going on in town- illegal botox parties, fake handicap hangers, and citizens ready to disturb each other's peace.
And through it all, Kenni wonders if now is a good time to tell Finn that she is aided in her law work by her deceased poppa's ghost.
I enjoy these for the sheer entertainment value and I like these quirky, at times crazy people who are also salt of the earth as it comes. The mysteries aren't terribly complex, but there is a little challenge. So, altogether, I anticipate each new installment in the series and heartily recommend them to those looking for a new small town, slightly paranormal cozy mystery series to try.
I rec'd this book from Net Galley to read in exchange for an honest review.
Six Feet Under is another great installment of the Kenni Lowry mystery series!
Kenni's mother is so excited because a famous food critic is coming to Ben's Diner to try Viv's famous pot pie. She is in competition with another restaurant but she is sure that her food will win.
It wouldn't be a Kenni Lowry book without some wild antics from Kenni's mother but this time it only gets her into a lot of trouble. The critic is found dead and all the evidence points to Vivian Lowry. It doesn't help that she was seen at the inn where the critic was staying. It's hard for Kenni but she knows she has to do her job and with the help of her ghostly grandfather (who use to be the sheriff and is now her ghost deputy), and her boyfriend Finn, who is her deputy, they do their best to prove Viv didn't do it. The mayor thinks that Kenni can't do her job right because it's her mother so ask her to step down which she does as she feels it will give her a way to look into things without prying eyes. So Finn takes the lead and Kenni tries to prove that it could have been Mundy a chef who has had some trouble with the critic.
I love this southern mystery and all the quirky characters that go with it! Kenni and Finn are great but her ghostly poppa and her mother Viv are my favorite characters. The author has done such a great job giving all her characters life that you can really get into them all and just love them and the town.
It has a really good mystery though I had it figured out but I didn't know why, It seems I am always good at figuring out the killer but not the motive...lol.
If you love a good southern cozy with a little paranormal element to it then you need to pick up this series, you won't be disappointed!! I can't wait to get into Dead as a Doornail that comes out later this year!
What a great book!?! Such a hoot, I was giggling out loud almost every time I was reading it. These characters are so perfect together. It really feels like you're visiting the South when Tonya writes. She does an amazing job helping you get to know these people like they're real and I really can't wait to visit Cottonwood. And the twists and turns she takes you on while trying to find the killer are perfect! I really look forward to the next Kenni Lowry adventure!
There is so much going in this book, that I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. Kenni Lowry is sheriff of Cottonwood and her mama, is the typical Southern Mama. In the last book, she won a cooking contest for her Chicken Pot Pie. Celebrity chef Frank Von Lee from the television show Southern Home Cookin’ has come to town to taste it as well as another contestant in a nearby town. He will then decide which of the two, he will feature on his show. Kenni's mama is so sure that she is going to win, she gets some work done. She attends an unlicenced botox party and ends up with more problems that she needed. Add in bogus handicapped parking permits and the surprising murder of Von Lee and Kenni has her hands full. Kenni’s mom becomes the prime suspect, as Chef Von Lee dies with poison found in his stomach within the remnants of a chicken pot pie and a scathing review partly written. It is going to take everything Kenni and her ghostly grandfather, Poppa, can do to clear her of the crime.
This is another fun addition to the Kenni Lowry series. I love how Finn and Kenny work together as well as how their personal relationship is developing. When the town wants to kick her off the case, she agrees so she can investigate on her own. Finn has some reservations, but he still wants to work with her. This book is filled with southern charm, humour, delightful characters, a bit of romance. I love the southern colloquialisms in the speech and expectations of the characters. Once again, Kenni gets a lot of clues by listening to local gossip and the help of her long dead Poppa. This is a well paced and plotted story. This is truly a fun read filled with a terrific cast of characters and that is what keeps me coming back for more. If you love Southern Mysteries, especially cozies should read, not only this book, but the whole series.
Six Feet Under is the 4th book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series by the prolific Tonya Kappes. This is my favorite book in the series to date! I was delighted and reveled while reading this engaging and cleverly crafted mystery that is chocked full of quirky and intriguing characters. Kenni Lowry is the very determined, tenacious sheriff in Cottonwood, KY. Along with assistance from her grandfather, Poppa, in ghost form, and hunky deputy Finn, Kenni sets out to catch a killer of the famous food critic Chef Frank Von Lee. Kenni's Mama, the number one suspect, is in danger of being arrested. Finn has a hunch Kenni may act with disreputable conduct to save her Mama. Imagine the histrionics when the Mayor removes Kenni from the case because Kenni’s there might be a “conflict of interest.” Kenny and Poppa’s musings and insightful observations were ceaselessly amusing and entertaining. Ms. Kappes’ writing and storylines are interesting, pleasantly delivered, easy to follow, well-paced, and delectably humorous. This book is well written and can be read as a stand-alone, but readers will appreciate the progressive growth in all aspects of this series if you read each book in the series to date. Don’t miss this delightful, down-home Southern mystery. I can’t wait for the next book in the series as this provided a perfect escape from the turmoil brewing all around the world! Don’t miss this laugh out loud, enjoyable book!
Disclaimer: I am thankful I received an ARC from NetGalley and Henery Press in exchange for a honest review. I appreciated the opportunity to read and review this entertaining book.
Six Feet Under is the 4th in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. Sheriff Kenni Lowrey is once again back to patrol the little town of Cottonwood with the aid of her bloodhound, Duke, and the ghost of her grandfather, Elmer Simms, previous Sheriff of Cottonwood. Also present is deputy sheriff, Finn Vincent, and the relationship between Kenni and Finn is still blossoming. As always gossip is flying around Cottonwood about the upcoming visit of Chef Frank Von Lee who is from the Culinary Channel’s show, Southern Home Cookin’. After Kenni’s mother. Vivian Lowrey, had won the cooking contest last year and her pot pie was featured in the Cottonwood Chronicle, Viv declares her life has been changed. This is why Chef Frank is arriving to decide who will be featured on his show. Excitement is building, and everyone is primping so they look their best. Crowd control is requested by Sheriff Kenni at Ben’s Dinner where Kenni had previously broke up a disagreement between Ben and his newly hired temporary chef, Mundy. This is just the beginning of Kenni’s troubles and Cottonwood will all be included in this mystery. Tonya Kappes always guarantees her readers a story with lots of twists and turns and needless to say, she has outdone herself in this book. When you think you have the answer of who done it, you are pulled back in and surprised at the results.
Gosh, where to begin. I love Tonya Kappes is books. And I've read pretty much all of them. An author with an ability to write likeable characters that you can identify with; they're not perfect they have their own imperfections, so they're easily relatable. I adore the small-town feel, the camaraderie of friends and family and I love how I get sucked into each and every series she comes up with.
This is definitely one of my favorite of her series. There's just something about the small-town sheriff that draws me in and makes me want to help her solve her Mysteries. I love her mama and I love her Grandad I would like to see a little bit more of her dad and if there are any siblings, I can't recall but I can't wait to the next one comes out and I just finished this one! They go too fast I can never seem to put them down.
**Thank You to Tonya Kappes/her publisher/Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review**
Six Feet Under by Tonya Kappes is the 4th book in the Kenni Lowry mystery series, and another fun book. Sheriff Kendrick (Kenni) Lowry is the granddaughter of the late Sheriff Elmer Sims. Celebrity chef Frank Von Lee from the Culinary Channel is coming to town since Kenni's mom is having her chicken pot pie judged by the chef. Unfortunately when the chef is found dead Kenni, Deputy Finn Vincent, and the ghost of poppa must find the real killer before Kenni's mom is arrested. Not only is this book really funny, it has a great mystery, with an element of the after life. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. Kenni is strong and independent women. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love humorous cozy mysteries, you will enjoy this book/series, with it's southern charm.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review
Residents Cottonwood, Kentucky are certainly excited when the Culinary Channel comes to town to film an episode of Southern Home Cookin’ with celebrity chef Frank Von Lee. Sheriff Kenni Lowry's mama is especially excited since it is her chicken pot pie that brought the chef to town.
Unfortunately, someone is not to keen on the chef and kills him, while pointing the finger at the sheriff's mama. Kenni knows something is up when her Poppa, retired sheriff shows up, especially since he is dead!
Get ready to laugh and investigate with Kenni and the gang.
Thank you to NetGalley and Henery Press for approving me to read this fantastic book by Tonya Kappes.
This is the 4th Kenni Lowry mystery and it's the best yet! Kenni, Poppa, and Finn - and Duke! - are back, and Kenni's Mama has a much bigger role in this installment, which I really enjoyed. Several story lines develop as Kenni works to identify the murderer, peaking your curiosity and adding names to Kenni's suspect list along the way. Kenni and Finn are together, and their still-new relationship is tested in a very realistic, yet unexpected way. Once you pick "Six Feet Under" up, you will not want to put it down!
My first Kenni Lowry book, and I loved it! The town of Cottonwood, Kentucky pulls you in with its Southern charm. This is a character-driven book. Kenni is so great as the sheriff, with her I don't care what others think attitude. She is just awesome! You'll have to read this series for yourself if you love cozy mysteries.
One of my favorites is Poppa, who's always there to help Kenni solve her investigations. In this case, Kenni sets out to help clear her mom of murder when celebrity Chef Frank Von Lee is taken down by some pot pie. There's so much fun to be had among these pages. I'm ready for more, please.
Tonya Kappes writes the best southern mysteries with all the charm she puts into them. The Kenni Lowry series is proof of that! With just a slight paranormal twist you'll fall in love with this cozy town and cast of characters. Tonya keeps you guessing with full of surprises.
Six Feet Under by Tonya Kappes is the fourth book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series and has everything that I have grown to love about this series - sass, southern charm, mystery, a touch of paranormal and characters that I want to get to know personally. Ms. Kappes always makes me feel right at home in Cottonwood. Kenni has been growing and I'm so glad to see her more confident in herself in this book. Kenni and Finn work well together and their romance is evolving naturally into a great relationship.
The book pulled me in at the first page. The plot is smooth and fast paced as Kenni has to solve this one to protect her momma. There weren't many suspects for the murder but there was fun to be found in a side case that involved botox parties and pirated handicap stickers. The twists and turns were perfectly executed and I was totally surprised at the reveal. I can hardly wait for my next trip to Cottonwood.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Henery Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
Frank Von Lee, a famous food critic has come to Cottonwood, KY to do a review of Viv Lowery’s (Kenni’s momma) famous chicken pot pie. Things go from great to very bad when Frank is murdered. Between feuding contractors, illegal Botox parties, cake making classes and the murder, Kenni has her hands full when she has to prove her momma is not the killer.
I love all of Tonya Kappes series but I have to say I think this is by far my favorite series. I get so excited with each new release. Her writing pulls you into the story and makes you feel like your right there in the mix of things. It’s a great escape from reality. Tonya always comes up with a mystery that definitely makes you put your thinking cap on and try to help Kenni, Poppa and Finn figure out who the killer is. This is definitely a great addition to an already awesome southern cozy mystery series. Please keep them coming!!!
I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this books from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest opinion.
For diehard fans of Tonya Kappes’s Kennie Lowry series, this third installment is a must read. Once again we find ourselves falling in love with the Sherriff of Cottonwood Kentucky, her spectral grandfather, eccentric momma and faithful hound Duke. Though on the mention of love, Kennie’s own love interest deputy Finn Vincent adds just enough romance to give “Cozy” mystery a new meaning.
Not only must Kenny find balance with her on the job romance, she also has her ethics briefly challenge when she must find the killer of Food critique and chef Frank Von Lee and prove that she can act as an unbiased officer of the law when her own momma is being framed for the crime.
But new to the series, worry not. This will suck you in from the start and have you begging for more!
I was privileged to receive an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
My favorite of the series so far because there's more investigative work by Kenni and we follow her around while she does it. My issues with Poppa and him not being utilized as well as he could be is vaguely explained by him having limitations from the other side. Don't recall reading that in the earlier books and it does give an explanation for my frustration, but it makes me go "Humph!" (Not sure I like that excuse.). Momma gets more of a role than matchmaker which was a plus too.
In the ARC copy I got from Netgalley (in exchange for my honest review) there appeared to be a sentence or two of author notes to herself. I had to reread it to confirm it wasn't part of the story. I found it alternately amusing and then interesting to get a glimpse of the writer's thoughts/process.
Poppa is back again, so Sheriff Kenni Lowry knows something is going to happen. But what and who is going to end up dead?? That is the question. Although this time her momma is thick in the middle of it, and a suspect when a body is found. With the help of Poppa and Finn, now her boyfriend as well the deputy of Cottonwood. Kenni needs to solve the case and hopefully keep her momma out of jail. I love this series. The small town feeling always draws me in, as does the friendships and family. The characters have flaws which make them more relatable as you read.
Thank you NetGalley and Henery Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book. Thank you Tonya Kappes for another great story and adventure in Cottonwood.
Good clean mystery with a touch of romance. Filled with all those quirky characters you often read about in small town settings, especially small southern towns. ;) There is some humor, though this book isn't so much about the humor as it is the mystery itself, as the lead, Kenni who happens to be the towns sheriff, has to try to prove her mother isn't a murderer. There's a little more anxiety running through the story. There are a couple crimes in addition to the main murder that keeps your mind busy and adds some silliness to the story. It's well written and a fun, easy and quick read. It is safe for teens and up. It's part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone.
I read Tonya Kappes upcoming cozy Six Feet Under last Wednesday and It felt like coming home. This is the 4th book in the Kenni Lowry Series that comes out this March. Kenni is the sheriff with a great dog, who is assisted by the ghost of her grandfather who was also sheriff before he passed and her deputy is her boyfriend. Not to mention that her mother is part of the town elite and this is one tightnight small community. When murder comes to town yet again, suspicion is thrown on her Mamma and Kenni takes herself off the case, technically... plenty of other things to investigate in town like some pink colored disability parking permits and some remarkably younger looking faces....I hope you will love this series as much as I do and truly enjoy six feet under.
This is book four in the series. I feel like this series can be a southern T.V. show. I can watch these characters acting the lines out in my head. There was a great start to the book. I learned some southern sayings I had never heard before. I think it's cute. I loved how Kenni ventured into trying her hand at baking a cake. A girls gotta try things out to see if they like 'um. I think that this part of the book takes sluething a turn for the better. The ending was great and awe! Tonya Kappes is a wonderful story teller.
Kenni and Finn are definitely a couple now and things are quiet in their small town. Until Poppa pops back up and you know what that means - another murder. Who is the number one suspect? Momma is in trouble - could she have really committed the crime? There are several things going on in this book - romance, murder, illegal activity, momma acting strangely, etc. Love the small town and its crazy residents.
