What I saw and did whilst locked up in HM Prisons and felt at that time in my life, with the numerous memories that I have experienced, I would like to share these with you. Some horrific events that would affect those individuals for the rest of their life. Others that may be interested in my account and my time spent inside behind bars I guess would also be other current and ex-prisoners who can relate to my situation as they have been there themselves. For those who haven't been inside and would like to guess or imagine what it's really like doing time. So, with this in mind, I would like to share my experiences with you and hopefully see what type of position I found myself in during that day and to ask you the question ‘what would you have done that day if you found yourself in the middle of a riot’.
Again I find it difficult to attach star ratings to someone’s true life accounts, however he we go. So basically the author was convicted of manslaughter through killing so,done with 1 punch. The account from the author is that the victim was fuelled by drugs was being aggressive so in self defence the author punched him, he fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, as stated by the prosecution in the case but for that one punch the victim would still be alive. I feel the title is a little misleading as it is not just about Strangeways or his time served there he also talks about other prisons such as Armley, Hull and Winston Green Birmingham. I ‘now at the beginning of the book the author does not profess to be a great writer or author however there are grammatical errors on every page, there are either misspelled or wrong words used several times throughout the for example nearly every-time the word were should have been used it was written as where, of and off were confused and instead of the helicopter hovering he describes it as hoovering. It was interesting to read once you got past all the errors however I do feel it was a little self indulgent he talks about people thinking they are maybe tougher than they actually are however he never backs down or loses any fights. He played according to him part in t(e prison riot which then made him go on to be a big part in the conditions the prisoners is once moved to another prison. So ultimately if you can look past t(e errors and the self indulgence it is quite interesting to learn a little of what life was like for prisoners housed in old Victorian prisons in the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s.
This book is dreadfully written. You sometimes have to read the same bit 3 times to understand it. It obviously has not been proof read. The strangeways part of the book is interesting. But they can't even get winson green right, referring to it constantly as winston green. Save your money don't bother.
Written in a matter of fact way, the author tells the true way people are treated in prison. The prison riot was a small part of Darren's time in prison but helped to complete the journey. Well written and well worth reading.
