A must-have addition to every baker's kitchen. The recipes are authentically Amish, and there's such a variety I'll be experimenting with new dishes for a long time. I made bagels - my first attempt - and found the directions super easy to follow. And the results? Delicious! I'll never buy store-bought bagels again.
When ever I head through Ohio or up into Pennsylvania Amish country I always try to make time to visit the local Amish communities. I have yet to be disappointed in their bread, jams, pies and the likes. Their beautifully crafted quilts and furniture is also worth the trip. To see these women and me working in the wood shops, quilting circle and kitchens is a delight. I have even been allowed to "help" on occasion. Although I fear I may have been more of a hindrance. Eneida McAlister's The Amish Baker's Cookbook is a glimpse back into Mrs. Hoffmyer's kitchen as the poor dear tried to teach me how to make biscuits. They were so tough I could have sold them as hockey pucks. My parents loved butter milk Pie and I was told Miss Rebecca made the best in the county. They did not lie. They are called the plain folk but I found them to be personable, warm and friendly as they answered the numerous questions posed about their beliefs and way of life.
The Amish Baker's Cook book is filled with recipes that we all can use and written with easy to follow directions. Some of the recipes included are starter recipes for bread. I have the Sourdough and Sweet Herman going now and can't wait to try them. The Spiced Molasses Cake was a hit at our weekly Women's Bible Study. The Easy Amish Pie Crust turned out flakey and tasty. My sister loves pretzels and I plan on trying the County Fair Soft pretzels next as well as the Orange Amish Muffins (which I may or may not share). Pick up a copy for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
My rating of "The Amish Baker's Cookbook - 73 Authentic Amish Baking Recipes" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.

I collect cookbooks and this is a great addition to my collection. The instructions were easy for me to read and follow.
The bread recipes have me ready for cooler weather. Baking bread is a stress reliever for me. The feel of the dough and the smell of the dough rising and baking is so comforting. Plus, it’s taste great too. I’m looking forward to trying the sour dough starter, Cinnamon Swirl Buttermilk Bread, Baked Oatmeal, and pie recipes.
