I've been reading the Helena Hawthorn series and noticed this was a prequel, well, of course before I carried on I wanted to come back and give this a read. I should say, you don't need to read this to enjoy the series but it adds depth and answers questions about Alexander. May Freighter has a style that I enjoy and spins a story that totally grips me from start to finish. I never start one of her books unless I know I have the time to finish it. This story made me love, absolutely adore Alexander. He tugged my heartstrings over and over and I'm so glad I got to the see the layers under his hard exterior. I look forward to more. Highly recommend this as well as the Helena Hawthorn series.

I really enjoyed reading this book. If you've already read the other books in the Helena Hawthorn series, then adding this book to the collection just adds more depth to the storyline in general. If this is your first experience reading any books in this series, that's ok too.

You will fall in love with Alexander, and your heart will go out to him over and over again in this book. I'd recommend this read for those that are fans of vampire stories and the paranormal, with a bit of romance and suspense tossed in here and there.

Enticing

This book has sttong characters based around Alexander the Russian vampire. It starts with him human and being turned. His life is in turmoil . He is a loner, seldom letting anyone in his life. He keeps very few relationships mainly with his sired family. He matures and finally sires his own blood child. This book covers a lot of his journey in just the first book. A long read. This isn't a wow type book, it is a more steady read. You don't really realize you got caught up in the story til the last page. Then you want more! On to book 2.

This is book one of the A Vampire in Love series and is a prequel to the Helena Hawthorn series. The main character is Alexander, the son of servants who works for the Sokolov family in Moscow, 1775. He lost his father through illness and has only his mother left and he lives to protect and help her as much as he can. He is also in love with the daughter of the household, Katherine, who seems to like him just as much, but he is far from of her status. He wants to try and better himself and asks Yosef Sokolov for the chance to learn about business by working on one of his shops. Katherine is sent away to boarding school and to prepare her for marriage to the man her father chooses, which she is not happy with. Another man is also taken on at the shop, Andrey, and he is very dismissive of Alexander and is favoured by Yosef. He soon finds out about Alexander’s love of Katherine and tells him that Katherine is to be his wife. Andrey doesn’t take Alexander’s feelings for her kindly and beats him badly, before setting two thugs on him and leaves him for dead. Thankfully another gentleman comes across Alexander and asks if he wants to live, which he does.

That man was Maxim, and he turns Alexander into a vampire, but he has a long wait until he can see Katherine again, as he will have to learn how or control his bloodthirst first! When he is finally allowed out and about, he wants to see how his mother is, only to find out she was dead. Katherine has now married Andrey and his life can never be what he had hoped for in the past. He will never be human again and has to learn to live as a vampire with his sire’s other childe Jana, Ewa and Matvey. He gets the chance to learn about business with Maxim and is soon running a business for him, with his name opening doors and helping to make connections. He still thinks of Katherine and does indeed meet her and her husband again, but matters do not end in exactly the way he would have liked and it greatly affects him. The story covers some two hundred years and follows Alexander from Moscow, to London, America and even Ireland, by which time he has made his own childe, Tanya. If you have read any of the series, you will love reading this series as it allows you to see the start of Alexander’s life and his change to a vampiric life, as well as others he meets along the way, such as Lucious, Andrew and Tanya. Fantastic to see what shaped him into the vampire he became and what happened to him. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Great Vampire Drama spanning more than 2 centuries
A series prequel. Alexander is an over 200 year old Russian vampire, changed in his early 20's. He was a servant to a wealth Moscow merchant. His father was the family butler and his mother a cook. Alexander was in love with his employers 16 year old daughter, Katherine, and she him.
Alexander wanting to be worthy of Katherine offered to work without wages at his employers tea house to learn business, while maintaining he work at the family home. His Katherine was promised to another, who was put in charge of his training. He was determined to be something more. He was betrayed and left for dead, and saved by a very old vampire, Maxmin, who had been watching him and was much impressed by Alexander's work ethic.
Alexander worked hard to control his blood lust and learned the art of business. He gained a father figure in Maxmin and he gave his a brother and 2 sisters in blood. Jana becomes his best friend and support. Soon he was managing one of Maxmin's tea houses. Everything he did was to put him in a position to help his mother and for Katherine. Things don't go well. He is betrayed again by his beloveds family. He looses everything, and in his rage destroys all who wronged him and some innocents as well.
Decades go by, Alexander heart has hardened. They he meets Tanya, a women who suffered betrayals as he did, and he makes her his childe. They develop a close parent, child and sometimes sibling type relationship. They leave Russia and make a new home in England. The head of the Vampire Council is a scary and possible insane women.
A run in with hunters nearly cost Alexander his life, but makes him a sort of friend in Lucious, a young vampire looking for revenge, on those who killed his sire. They see Russia fall. Decades go by and friends move in and out of Alexander and Tanya lives. They weather the great wars. They run their business and live their lives.
2014 Alexander and Tanya move again. Ready to open a new club, Russian Roulette. Word comes that Lucious is wanted by England's Vampire Council and the vampire him self calls Alexander for help.
Reads OK as a stand alone with a little foreshadowing for the first book in the Helena Hawthorn, Russian Roulette. A little sex, a lot of drama.

I am such a big fan of this author's books! I adore how she writes, how she is able to create such an imaginative and vivid world that the reader wants to be part of!

When I first started reading the Helena Hawthorn series, I was so intrigued and interested in Alexander's character and the more books I read in this series the more I wanted to know about his history and what has made him the way that he is so I am so so glad that this author wrote this book!!! Everything about him makes complete sense once you read this book and you see exactly why he is the way that he is because of the things that have happened to him in his long life. All the heartbreak, pain and passion that he has lived through haven't broken him but made him stronger, although more closed off from a lot of people, every now and again you see a glimmer of the human man he was and compassion shines through!!!

I could seriously rave about how amazing this book is all day long and how much I loved reading a book of Alexander's beginnings, I don't really want to say much more about this book as I don't want to give anything away especially for those who are big fans of Alexander's character. I can't rate this book highly enough and would definitely give this book more than 5* if I could! It is highly addictive book that makes you want to keep turning the pages to just find out what happens next in his history. I adored this book and can't wait to read more of this author's amazing work!!!!

Alexander: Memoires by May Freighter

Adult (s,v) politics, intrigue, possibly insane Queen.

A suprisingly interesting story beginning considering I'm not a great vampire fan. Ms. Freighter doesn't seem to beat readers over the head that this is a vampire story because that is only a part of some of the characters. This prequel covers Alexander's origins as well as quite a bit of time while introducing readers to key aspects of the culture and a cast of characters that drift in and out of Alexander's life. He is a central character of this particular part of the story. After all, this is his memoire. Now that we know Alex's backstory, the focus of view may shift to someone else in the next instalment, but we will probably find ourselves still interested in his activities since we have spent a quantity of time and pages on him. This reader hopes he is not "put on a bus" so to speak only to be heard about in passing. Not sure if this would be book 1, 0, or .5. However it is numbered, I may actually like the sequel book Russian Roulette if it is anything like this one.

This prequel to Helena Hawthorn series can be read as a standalone and without any problems if you haven't read the series.
Alexander's backstory finally sheds some light on his past and the way he became a vampire. In the Helena Hawthorn series, his character was utterly interesting and promising, giving off the vibes that there was always more to him than one can sense at first contact. Having an insight into his past is an awesome reading experience, emotional, dramatic, and as realistic as fantasy can be. Do not expect a fairytale with HEA, but a brilliant story, vowen from multimple threads in a complex way just like life itself usually develops.
I absolutely enjoyed this story, and I am looking forward to read the next book focusing on Alexander's character - the Monochrome Interview.

Ah. I can say I am so totally into this book. I can´t express how much I feel for the main characters. The bonds between a sire and a childe is one of the sweetest things. I can´t explain how much charming and good looking Alexander is in my mind eyes. May did another great job in this book. Her style in a historical area is wonderful. I wonder what will bring another book. This one is full of sorrow and love and bonds between them. It brings such joy to read more of it. A mystery envelops them and it reveals nothing too soon. A reader has to wait and a reader is keeped in a string because its soooooo exciting.

Great job done. May.

I am a fan of the Helena Hawthorn series and as such was excited to read about Alexander's life and how he became a vampire. He has been one of the characters that I was very interested to learn his back story. I was not disappointed and this prequel has only made me anxious to read more about him which is coming soon with Monochrome Interview. This short book really gives us some insight to what makes Alexander tick and why he is the way he is. I was also happy to read more about his childe, Tonya. Now I am hoping that she will get her own book too. If you've read any of the Helena Hawthorn books, you'll enjoy getting to know Alexander better. I'm sure of it.

I’m of two minds about this book. I enjoyed it, but I’m wondering if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read more of the series before reading this. I loved the story of how Alexander has become the vampire he is now, and I like that this gives us lots of background information about the vampire society that Alexander is a part of. We also get to know this group of characters that I’m sure are going to be important. And I think that’s where my problem is right now: I don’t know why any of these people are important yet. Mind you, that little stinger in the end makes me very curious as to what’s about to happen.

Alexander: Memoirs by May Freighter is a book in the Helena Hawthorne series. This book introduces the life, death, and undead life of a vampire named Alexander. This book had lots of interesting parts to it and I really enjoyed reading it. Even though this is not exactly a story of true love with the happy after ending there are some quite sensual and romantic parts. Mainly it is a story recounting the romantic entanglements that could be expected of a brooding vampire. If you like a different kind of vampire story than you will love this book too. Alexander: Memoirs an introduction to undead life.

I loved Alexander‘s story. Its gripping storyline kept me hooked right from the beginning. I enjoyed following his transition and development throughout time as the story progressed. His character is very engaging, I like his caring, protective way and the bonds he forged with his blood family.
Peppered with suspense and intrigue, some interesting historical tidbits and a couple of steamy love scenes, this book is a very good start to the new series!

If you like historical vampire stories with sympathetic characters, steamy passion, mystery and intrigue, you will enjoy this book.

Absolutely loved this book! I’ve read May Freighter’s work before and this series is completely different to the other series but both I thoroughly enjoyed!

This book follows Alexander, it’s his story, his memoirs. I love that it starts from childhood because you get to know the human Alexander and understand his journey before he is turned.
Alexander is a servant in a Russian household and he falls in love with his masters daughter.
Nothing goes to plan and Alexander ends up fighting for his life before ultimately losing it. Then begins his journey as one of the undead.
This story is full of heartbreak and betrayal but also found family and love. I couldn’t put it down!
I loved this one so much I went and bought the next few books in the series to read.
For vampire lovers this book is a must!!

Alexander: Memoirs (A Vampire In Love Book 1, and also Helena Hawthorne Book 0.5) is a really great book for anyone who has read (and likely become addicted to) May Freighter’s wonderful Helena Hawthorne series where the character Alexander, as a vampire, plays an important role. This is an incredibly complex character so a book like this which tells part of his backstory is really a treat. Not a book for newcomers to the world created by this author, but for we fans it is a must read (and my rating is based on that), even if - as warned (but really not a surprise) - there is no HEA here.

We all love the icy sharp Alexander but his past remains a mystery when reading the adventures of Helena and Lucious. And I sure loved reading his prequel.
This book is roll-coaster of emotions, conflicts and history. How did Tanya become the childe of Alexander? How did Lucious came to be friend with such a protagonist? How was named Russian Roulette? And why Alexander seems to hate red-head? Before the sarcastic and loyal vampire was a human like any of us.
The making of one of the best characters in HH series.

This book is about Alexander’s life and how he became a vampire, there are bits and pieces of Alexander’s character in the Helena Hawthorn series and this book is 0.5 to that series. If you have read the series then you will understand why Alexander needed to tell his story. In this story I can understand why Alexander is like he is and this story explains everything, this also tells you about Alexander’s daughter Tonya. A great read and I highly recommend this book.

This was a wonderful and helpful book that gave us Alexander’s backstory and how he became a vampire! We meet him again in RUSSIAN ROULETTE and his banter with Lucious is perfection! I really enjoyed this story line, the awesome characters, and the intriguing books in this series (although I think I read some in the wrong order)! I really do love this author’s writing and continue finding more and more favorites each time I grab one of her books.

If you like a new take on Vampires, then this first book by May Freighter is just up your alley. This book told the story of one man's life from the time of his becoming a vampire through many centuries of violence and love. This book almost makes the character seem human and worth caring about his trials and tribulations. I have already got the next book in the series loaded into my TBR next file. This is a great view into how Alexander became who he is. Even if you have not read any other book in this series I recommend reading this book. It is a stand alone and the author did not skimp out in anyway. This story ends where book one of the series Helena Hawthorn begins. I enjoyed learning more about Alexander and Tanya. There is no HEA in this story but you learn all about Alexander’s icy depths.

Loving this take on vampire legend!

I had already read Russian Roulette when this story was brought to my attention. And I'm glad it was. It gave fantastic background I to Alexander's character and a bit to Lucious's character, though he is still frustratingly mysterious! This series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine!

Very good story. I enjoyed it very much. Alexander's memoir is very in depth. You can feel the emotions in the writing. The good and the bad. It is sad that vampires lose there ability to feel. They don't seem to notice when they are gone. Would they want them back if they could? I received a free review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
