When Kaia Anderson, twenty-three and newly married, turns to her future, she doesn’t see it coming—the ruthless hunt of a deranged stalker that, spanning three decades, will shatter her life and terrorize her family. He’d been a college classmate, a casual acquaintance. But mental illness swiftly takes hold and so does his obsession.
Their lives under siege, Kaia fights fiercely for safety and justice until—consumed by fear, tormented by the insanity of the courts—she stands at a crossroads and only one thing is clear: Either she will lose herself or find herself, but she must change direction.
Desperate for answers, she embarks on a path of self-discovery, a psycho-spiritual journey unlike any she’s known. Guided by a counselor, lured by clues revealed in her ongoing battle, Kaia travels to the furthest reaches of her unconscious mind: deep, shadowy places where long-buried secrets of the soul reside; forgotten places that beckon her to remember; places where she unearths hidden wisdom that, step upon step, transforms her and so, her experience.
Rife with the suspense of a legal thriller and the depth of an existential quest, "Trial by Fire" boldly cleaves the boundary of the true crime memoir. With stirring prose and a thread of wry humor, the author intertwines her harrowing ordeal, introspection, dreams, visions, and courtroom drama, pulling us inescapably into this gripping work. An unforgettable story of terror, heartbreak, loss, and ultimately, profound healing and hope, "Trial by Fire" casts a piercing light on the long dark night, illuminating the wisdom and power in each of us, begging to emerge.
* * * Kaia's case spurred the overhaul of Colorado's stalking law. Investigation Discovery's documentary series, "Stalked," featured her story.
Kaia Anderson is an award-winning author and champion of justice, an analytical thinker and a healer at heart. The survivor of one of Colorado's most notorious stalking cases, she advocates legislative reform and has been instrumental in strengthening the state's stalking law and crime victim rights. Her memoir, “Trial by Fire: A Personal Journey of Consciousness, Power & Freedom,” is a Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award winner and reading selection in higher education programs.
Born in Missouri, Anderson received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. During her decades-long stalking ordeal, she also earned her master’s degree, built a distinguished consulting career, and raised her three remarkable children. She still calls Colorado home.
Trial by Fire is an astonishing narrative memoir that takes us through labyrinthine legal and legislative systems, shifting policing policies and attitudes, and dysfunctional mental health systems. Trial by Fire is also Anderson’s heroic gift she is bringing back to us from her journey to the underworld as a woman who was stalked for over 30 years.
At the center of this thoroughly documented life story is Anderson herself, an ordinary woman forced into a journey into darkness. It is a story of her struggle to get support from the institutional systems that are supposed to help people and her struggle to deal with the psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual assaults of being stalked. We read of a woman who fiercely protects her family, does everything she can to bring about justice not only for herself but also for others, and suffers greatly in her harrowing journey. Not only does it take decades of dogged determination, but life-threatening actions in order to bring about her stalker’s eventual capture, arrest, and conviction after decades of evasion.
Trial by Fire introduces us to remarkable, steadfast, heroic everyday people who are “just doing their jobs:” police who seriously take their responsibility to protect and serve, District Attorneys who guide Anderson through hearings and trials, journalists who chronicle the story year after year, friends who offer their humor and love, and a therapist who courageously walks beside the author.
Detailed, nuanced, and written with a heart to bring awareness and change, this strong story is firmly anchored in well-documented fact and includes an exhaustive Bibliography of articles, broadcasts, court documents, and supporting resources.
The longer I live, the more I find that true life is often more unbelievable than fiction. I am in awe of people’s heroic courage in circumstances in which many of us believe we probably would not survive. In telling her story, Anderson does not set herself up as a hero and she is honest about her vulnerabilities and doubts. Yet, we, reading this remarkable story, see it as an heroic story.
May this book change our society and us. May this book be a call to social, mental health, judicial, and legislative justice and reformation. May this book be a solace and source of help to others who have suffered from being stalked.
This is an amazing book. It gave me insight into the justice system, the lack of support for the victim of crimes of any kind, and the personal journey of dealing with it. Kaia takes the reader through the harrowing experience of being stalked and harassed for years and then details how she dealt with the overwhelming tragedy of personal loss. She regained control of her life with the courage to look the truth in the face, then gives the reader a comprehensive map of one's power to uplift, encompass grief, and lead one's self to a higher plane of understanding.
