This book was written in 1934 when Shen Congwen returned to his hometown. Shen saw that the beautiful village was turned into a withered scene and all the scene of devastation everywhere. He became so sad that he expressed his "silent grievances" all the way. What the author depicted was full of ancient style withstanding history, simple yet comprehensive, slow-witted yet vivid, full of his secret worries and philosophical thinking over life, which gives lessons and inspiration to readers.
