Aesop's well-known fable of The Ant and The Grasshopper - the industrious ant and the carefree musical grasshopper - has long been a favorite of conservative commentators. They love the toiling ant and hate the unemployed grasshopper. This short book is a critical examination of the conception of life, work, responsibility and art that is expressed by the conservative fable. That conception does not stand up under critical scrutiny.
This is an excellent interpretation of the famous fable by Aesop, but this time from the progressive left of the political spectrum. Ring uses the fable to show that we are all in this together. He reminds us that the communities to which we belong count at least as much as the individuals who comprise our communities.
