Kerry Sheridan came to Horizon with nothing but the clothes on her back and her name. She's lived for three years, fighting the blank spots in her memory and the urge to drink the rest of it into oblivion, haunted by blood-soaked nightmares that feel too real. It's an uneasy life, but the only one she can remember.
When the body of her landlord is discovered, she knows it's time to go. But this time, it's not a straight road out of Horizon.
KLS-9 is a force to be reckoned with. You will not be able to put it down, I promise you that.
No book is perfect, but the minor flaws (note: so minor most readers less picky than me won't pick up on) in this one are out weighed by the breakneck pacing and engaging characters. This book grips you, sinks its hooks in you, and won't let you go till you finish.
I never thought I wanted a mashup of Neuromancer, Fire Starter, and Jessica Jones, but here we are, and it's fantastic.
Injected into a Beautifully Horrific Dream that I didn't want to end.
Have you ever read a book and felt like some one was massaging your brain with coconut oil and chocolate.
Well, that's how KLS-9 was for me. What an incredibly cool, sexy, superpowered, traumatic, psychological story.
It didn't knock my socks off or blow me away. It laid me down like a feather on a bed... a bed of explosives, and kissed my wick with a nuclear bomb for lips. As my mind was ignited in a fully realized future reality, where most of humanity has gone to hell in a hand basket.
I could feel the blood dripping from the ceiling in the government facility after the Massacre.
I could hear Kerry's other half howling in her mind. I could see the scars that perforated and laced the pieces of Kerry together.
From being so horribly beaten and broken because of powers born to her. From being torn apart and rebuilt into a weapon for others biding.
I felt Kerry's pain and suffering and I watched as she kicked the living sh** out of everyone and everything that hurt her.
I saw her love and embrace people even when her memory failed her as her world was split in two in her mind.
God, I loved this book. Some of the scenes had me laughing out loud, like Isaiah in the Bar as Kerry messes with his mind was pure magic.
Amazing work by the Author Leigh Grissom
The way you write is a fine meal to be appreciated and the deliciously edible pieces that you feed us are both rich and savory.
I highly recommend KLS-9 it is 300pages of ecstasy.
Oh and that ending... Wow, I can't wait to read the second book is all I will say.
From the start of Grissom’s first book of The Eden Evolution Series titled, KLS-9, readers will instantly know that they are in for a treat, even if it comes blood-soaked and angry. Hitting a fast pace right out of the gate, Grissom delivers a twisted pounding tale of shadows and conspiracy, dirty decisions, and the changing dynamic of escaping the past while maneuvering through the future all the while catching readers up to the sizzling backstory already in progress in small digestible snippets. Never letting up, readers are taken on a deadly journey within a world of revenge, psychic powers, greed, the gray area between right and wrong, and good versus evil.
Cleverly crafted characters set the stage in a future-like dystopian world of superpowers, corporate wants, military needs, and the human experience of feasting on the scraps left over. Self-worth and cash value streamline as technology mingles with bounty hunting flair and survival dabbles between nightmares and reality as Grissom’s main character, Kerry Sheridan, struggles to maintain, escape, and understand a past that quickly comes back to haunt her. Joined by a memorable supporting cast, Grissom expertly displays her descriptive talents regarding the locals and locales within Horizon, the fictional city of lost souls, seedy nightlife, and second chances making it feel real and drawing readers into its depths instantly as the dirty travels hand and hand with the clean representing every facet of nearly any society.
With unrelenting action and brief moments of emotional realness, Grissom portrays a strong female lead with moments of brutal truths and honest feelings while showcasing the driving force of a woman pushed too far, stretched too thin, and holding a grudge. Combining science fiction, action, and suspense into Grissom’s first part of her series, KLS-9 is sure to entertain readers craving a devilish mix of all three with its subtle nods to Battle Angel, Blade Runner, and The Long Kiss Goodnight. Does not disappoint!
KLS-9, or Kerry, has been living on the run. Undocumented, unwanted. For three years she has lived in Horizon, paid her rent, and fought with killer migraines. She's not sure exactly what happened, how she came to be here. There are patches of darkness in her past, and they continue to expand into her present. Then it happens. She remembers a fight with her landlord, when his body is discovered she knows she can't afford to stay in one place too long. She has to keep moving, or be discovered. She escaped from the Institute once, she doesn't want to find out if she could do it again. The thing is, her problems move with her, the little voice follows her wherever she goes, and the more she comes to understand it, the more she fears what it can do.
I really enjoyed reading KLS-9, when I first started reading it I thought it would pan out to be something a little bit X-men in style, I was wrong. Politics, weapons, and manipulation make up just a fraction of the tale. It was an easy read, enjoyable, with action and mystery as Kerry tries to discover who and what she is, while trying to evade the Tracker who seeks to capture her.
First of all, I’d like to say that I finished KLS-9 by Leigh Grisson in an afternoon. Not a day, mind you. An afternoon. Not even that. Like, two and a half to three hours, tops. It’s not a short book, either. It’s just that good. You might as well not read any more of this review. Just go out and get it now.
Not convinced?
Okay, fine. I’ll go on then.
KLS-9 is a sort of cyberpunk/urban fantasy mash up. It’s got some cool cyberpunk gadgets, but the main focus is on psychic and telekinetic and powers. Sound awesome, already? That’s because it is.
The setting involves a word where people with mind powers are closely watched, regulated, and trained by the government. Most are put into these neighborhoods (more like camps) where they stay forever. However, the really talented ones get programed for more nefarious deeds. Poor Kerry, our heroine, falls into that category.
She escaped, but now she’s on the run. Unfortunately for her, she has huge gaps in her memory, splitting migraines, and a voice in her head. Everywhere she goes, mayhem follows. There’s also a “Tracker” following her as well. Isaiah has pyrokinesis as well as an uncanny ability to see people with psychic powers. Regrettably for him, Kerry is one of the most powerful of them all.
The book is fast-paced and intense. The characters were memorable—and if I don’t mind saying so—pretty kickass. I loved the political intrigue as well as the excitement of Kerry and Isaiah’s interactions. I cannot say enough good things about it.
Oh, and there’s a sequel that I’m about to get my hands on. SABRE-9 just came out, and I’m super excited.
Anyhow, what are you doing still reading this? Go now. Buy. Read. Enjoy.
This story was a lot of fun to read. The action and adrenaline were basically flowing non-stop, and that's no exaggeration. Grissom creates a very dark, cruel world that blends magical powers and body-modifying tech to a great degree. It is also masterfully crafted so that you never feel like you're reading through an info dump. I did have some issues with the book though. First of all, the Kindle version had a good chunk of formatting problems, and I just wasn't a fan in general of how thoughts and inner dialogue were shown. I also found some of the dialogue to be a little awkward at times, and there was a sex scene that had a very cringy line in it. My biggest issue, though, is that things felt rushed and a little choppy. Because the action is always there, it doesn't leave enough time for transitions between plot points, which leads to a jarring read at times. Despite that, the book was still a hell of a fun ride. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more by Leigh Grissom.
( Format : Audiobook ) "You're getting on my nerves, woman." For three years since Kerry escaped from the institution, Kerry has had blackouts and losses of memory: she could not even remember how she'd come to Horizon. But the nightmares were there, violent and angry, and from the physical damage she'd sustained, she'd hurt people, badly, even killed them. She'd been renamed KLS-9 and now someone was coming for her. This is a violent, unusual SF, h, horror thriller with sexual intention thrown in. Very fast paced and hard hitting, once started it is hard to put down. The characters might not be attractive but they do exude a mesmerising appeal.
Not an easy book to narrate convincingly in all probability, but Logan McAllister gave an excellent performance, voice slightly sinister as well as well modulated and paced. An exceptional book, only six hours in length, but fully packed with movement throughout.
My thanks to the rights holders of KLS-9, from whom, at my request, I received a freely gifted complimentary copy.
I judge how good a book is by many things. One of those key things is how many words/sentences/paragraphs/pages I skip. The answer with KLS-9? NONE.
This is not the genre I typically read. And after reading the sample, I almost didn’t buy it. It’s quite violent, and my extremely vivid imagination saw things way too clearly.
I'm glad I didn’t wuss out. You will not get a rest from the action, you will not get a joke, you will not get a break. You will get hooked.
I’ll admit I almost quit after a particular scene burned itself into my mind (that I’m still seeing, thank you very much, Ms. Grissom) but I couldn’t quit. I had to follow Kerry’s journey, I had to see the comeuppance doled out. And I was NOT disappointed.
If you like gritty, non-stop action, an unapologetic heroine who will not bother with questions after she shoots you (or rips out your trachea), and a threaded, bloody plot, this is your book!
Leigh Grissom got this book under science fiction which is not exactly true, I would say Science Fiction Horror fits much better. An audiobook which is hard to put down for breaks, it just grabs you and don’t want to let go. Before I continue to Sabre-6 I’ll say that it’s not easy to give a true review yet especially that I’m not really into horror style genre but I have enjoyed all those unexpected twists which made this all interesting and intense !
Logan McAllister narrated this creation beautifully and perfectly.
It's been quite a few years since I've read much sci-fi, especially in the dystopian genre, until now. This book promptly snagged my attention and wouldn't let go. Kerry's story is twisted, dark, and gripping. Suspense is sustained throughout the book. While the story continues in the follow-up, the immediate plot was resolved rather than left open, which is satisfying yet urges the reader on to find out what happens next. I definitely will read the next in the series.
Loved this story! An action-packed, suspenseful story led by a total kick-ass heroine. The author introduces the reader to a dystopian future where individuals with psychic ability are either collected in neighborhoods for the government to "watch and provide", or groomed for the military, or worse. Grissom created believable, flawed characters in a dynamic backdrop. I've already downloaded the sequel, and look forward to reading it.
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. The author is a friend of mine and I had no idea how good of a writer she was. This book kept me wanting to turn the page to see what was coming next. You are introduced to a well thought out cast of characters. Every one unique and relevant to KLS-9. I am looking forward to reading the next one but I must sleep first. I could see this story being made into a killer movie.
If you like mystery sci-do, then give this book a chance. Interesting premise. I really felt bad for Kerry and was rooting for her till the end. Readers of Christine Feehan’s Ghostwalker series will love this.
From Amazon: I don't have the words to describe how much I enjoyed this story! I laughed, I cried and the only thing keeping me from the next book is stopping to write this review. So, gotta go. Maybe I'll think of more to add later once I calm down from the emotions and excitement... It was entertaining to listen to. I highly recommend getting the audio version.
