You thought you’d uncovered the secrets of the universe. But you never found me.

The humans crossed the stars, traveling farther than any before, all to terraform a planet long thought dead. They destroyed their world, and now they need mine.

They found me buried in the core of my planet, but when they set me free they also unleashed a dark force more powerful than any before—my twin. Possessed by the god of death, no guns can hope to battle his magic.

I couldn’t stop him from destroying my world before, but I’ll die before I let him take another people from me.

Many things have changed since I ruled. But death… death never changes.

Provoked (Space Mage Book 1) by Izzy Shows is a science fiction/fantasy book that starts a new fiction series. I enjoyed this book but not as much as her other series. I did like that the male character's skin turns into armor-like scales that cover his body when he needs to protect himself and long knife- like projections come out of his knuckles when he goes into a rage! Now that is awesome! He is genetically enhanced to be a super warrior. I would give this a 3 1/2 star rounding it up to a 4 star. I bought this book and pre-ordered the next book. There is some cool mage power- like fights that happen so that is why I call this a sci-fi and fantasy. They find the alien but she has this power like a mage. Good story but has some slow spots.Good story overall.

I was super excited to read this first book in a new series by one of my favorite authors, and it did not disappoint. I loved Kaiden, and I would definitely want him at my back in a fight. Xiva was so badass, and I can't wait to see where she goes from here. Walter though. Adorable, geeky, genius Walter. I need more of him in my life. I loved that final chapter and the implications for the next book. This is going to be so good.

A interesting take on the combination of sci-fi/fantasy book. I'm pretty new to Izzy Shows writing and reading sci-fi is something I will say I don't do often since I'm not a major sci-fi fan. But I did receive this as an ARC and I gotta say the only real things that I have an opinion on in the negative are the sluggishness in how it starts and proceeds for part of the book and how rushed the end of it felt. Also seeing as how the world itself was pretty much a desolate planet and the only real focused setting was one place it didn't give much to the imagination for the world, but I do hold hope this will improve in the sequel.
Now to what I did liked about this book and gives me a very good reason to seek out the sequel when the time comes to read it. First off what intrigued my interest to want to be someone that got an ARC copy of this was the cover. The cover screams intrigue from the vibrant colors right down to the appearance of the character who in my opinion could easily be Storm from X-Men if her skin coloring was altered. Anyway to what the story is about. Provoked story plot is pretty much this:
Xiva's story
Xiva sacrifices everything to use her gifts blessed upon her by her worlds god of light to bury her brother possessed by the her worlds dark god responsible for slaughtering her people. Centuries later, she's unearthed by humans.

But she isn't the only one.

Now, all that stands between them and the god of death is her. She just has to convince them she's not a threat first.

Now for the other side

Kaidan's side if the story

Experimented on, mutated, and has loss many through life. He is a warrior who sees no reason in living. Yet he's here on a ship traveling the galaxy on a mission with many different scientist and other guardsmen, in search of a planet for which humanity can prosper on since they've lead their own planet to being practically unhabitable.

Soon he comes to a planet and everything changes as he and those with him lands that for some reason draw him.

After a time of being there the team unearth a woman whom he is drawn to so strongly and intrigues him due to what she can do. What is it about her that makes him unable to turn away from her and what secrets does she hold?

So from that Xiva is the female lead of this story and Kaidan the male lead. Once freed Xiva gains much distrust from many but interest from two others. In comes Kaidan and both sense a connection to the other. The main thing that keeps the two from truly acting upon this is the communication barrier and the distrust from Kaidan and Xiva's religious views on proximity between males and females and in general her beliefs. But both do share similarities in their loneliness and sad past. Now from the background part there is much distrust in regards towards Xiva especially in her ability of fighting using magic. Except from one such person, Walter a genius 25 year old squint as Kaidan calls the people he and the other fighters are there to protect. Walter can be considered Xiva's first confidant and friend. Anyway Xiva's main concern is with the humans safety due to her brother being released through her release and Kaidan's only concern is with guarding her do to orders and figuring out why he finds a need to be near her despite what he tells himself. There in lies what a portion of the book ends up being about. Till the point where they make some better leeway with their relationship with Kaidan teaching Xiva to communicate with what he calls common but also Kaidan learning magic out of request from Xiva. At this point certain treachery happens that makes almost all point a finger at Xiva till the real culprit and motives behind said actions are revealed. This person is someone that was thought of as friend but turned out to be for.
In conclusion pretty much after that is the final battle between Xiva and her brother where she and Kaidan make their bond official only after some other things happen (no spoilers). They defeat the enemy and their connection grows stronger do to a certain things that you should find out for yourself.
Finally at the end readers are given a brief bit of script from a certain someone saying that Xiva's fight is not over and hinting that a certain someone the reader has previously been introduced to is going to be her next big problem. Also since it seems like there may be a relocation in setting that also leaves much to hope for. So hope this has been helpful. This was a good read and while not perfect it's a page turner that will see me reaching for the sequel.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.
The beginning was a bit rough for me. The main characters are in pretty depressing moods. Almost a little to much woe is me an a repeating loop for a good part of the first half of the book. The story progresses yet the mental track was the same...until Xiva finally gets released. There are also some extra words here and there that throws off a sentence, like an extra a or it. Though that seems to clear the about halfway through.
Xiva and Kaiden, this is going to get better and better, I can just tell. Attraction yet moral restrictions that keep them apart. Which is perfect, no need to throw them into sexy scenes when there is a big bad out there.
Kaiden is a Raider, I'll let you figure out what that is ;). He has come to a plant to guard scientists that are there to terraform it because we'll humans have destroyed Earth. They thought it was barren, oops, they were wrong. In comes Xiva, there is a language barrier, which was refreshing so many times it seems aliens can understand any language!
Once Xiva is freed the story starts hopping. It's hard to comment without giving up key parts. I also didn't see one event that happened as a possibilIty, it was a shocker! The story progresses pretty fast and I wasn't able to get a real sense of time. I did overall enjoy the main characters. Got pretty attached to a secondary character, so much more to Walter than he lets on!
The mix of science fiction, fantasy is done extremely well. You have genetically modified humans, space travel, intriguing aliens, and magic. I also really liked that they weren't teenagers. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the above genre's and wants a fast read.
This book was given to me by the author for an honest review.

The book begins with the Kaiden, a mutated and augmented human, aboard a sleeper ship. Kaiden is tired of his life of constant strife. Soon after repelling space raiders to reach the ship's destination planet in the hopes of terraforming the planet as a replacement for humanities abuse of natural resources, but the planet 71 Caros B, is known as Eyrus by the remaining iindigenous life, who is one warrior-mage named Xiva.

Shows packs a wallop in this first encounter story. It touched upon some real-life issues torn from the headlines of today, particularly bigotry and racial supremacy. Her characters are real and well thought out despite being basic tropes of Space fiction. The ultimate adversary is of Xiva's own race in a prophecy through his machinations are unrevealed until late in the story when a pawn declaring a 'humans for humans' mindset precipitates the arrival of the adversary.

I understand the necessity of introduction of Kaiden and Xiva and the complexity of their characterizations and interaction had to take center stage in the story but the sub-plot of the bigotry wasn't as clear early on in the story and I felt it could have been every bit as importantXiva's prophecy, instead it cropped up unexpectantly and just as quickly, dismissed. Expanding on this in later volumes would flesh out the characters of Walter, Mercy and Anders in a more dynamic way. All-in-all a very fast paced and enjoyable read that focussed more on the main characters but definitely left room for further expansion in the Space Mage series.

I don't read science fiction very often, even though I love sci-fi on telly and in films. Having read all of Izzy Show's books to date, I knew that this would be worth a read and I wasn't wrong, as my tiredness can attest! I read half in one go, only putting it down when I realised my alarm was going off in less than three hours and the next night did exactly the same until I finished it. I literally could not put it down, I was so enthralled and impressed.
Kaidan and Xiva are beautifully drawn characters and the story is told by both of them, with Xiva's contributions initially quite confusing but soon all became clear. I loved both their characters and their reactions to one another. Walter grew on me, bless him, after my initial irritation with him but that is just a testament to Izzy's skill at spinning a story and creating believable characters.
The book has no cliffhanger but sets up the next book very well and I am looking forward to reading it as soon as possible.
This book is a complete departure for Izzy. Her other books contain any number of supernatural species, some whose origins are as yet unknown as well as demons, vampires, werewolves and one very special mage. If you haven't read them yet, I envy you. Stop reading this and go and buy them now!
I received an ARC from the author but have voluntarily decided to write a review and the opinions are my own.

Seen from the eyes of two characters, Provoked is a well-written, thoughtful book. There is a combination of science fiction and fantasy in it, and author Izzy Shows strikes a nice balance between the two.

The book begins with Kaidan, a genetically enhanced soldier. He leads off some of the chapters and they're seen in his first person viewpoint. He's also the leader of his military squad, also equally experimented upon, that is tasked with the job of guarding the scientists as they land on a new world and ready it for human habitation.

Balancing him as narrator of the other chapters is Xiva. The first few Xiva chapters begin with the character trying to remember the hows and whys of what seems to be an underground imprisonment. Xiva's faulty memories can't quite recall what happened for this imprisonment.

Obviously there is a connection between the two characters and, after a widely separated beginning, they meet up and must work together against a great evil.

Shows does a great job describing the world and the situations the characters find themselves in. Minor characters are developed as well and character interactions are fun to read.

While the book has a distinct ending and is complete in and of itself, I'm glad to know there is a second book out there. Hopefully it will be out soon!

I received an ARC of this book.

Space themed books aren't usually my thing, but I love this author and really enjoyed her Codex Blair books and the ruled by Blood books, so when offered the chance to be part of the ARC team for this new series she was writing I thought I would give it a go, not really knowing what to expect. I'm glad I did, as I wasn't disappointed.
I really enjoyed the book, which like all this author's work was imaginative, different and well written, and I soon found myself drawn into it. I struggled at times to follow some unfamiliar word, but as I said, this isn't my normal genre, and I did get used to them.
I really liked the character's of Xiva, Kaidan, and Walter. The connection between Xiva and Kaiden evident, and they seemed great together, and I found I could really feel for them and everything they had been through. I found Walter endearing and grew fond of his character.
I would definitely recommend.
I received a ARC and am leaving a voluntary review

So good I sat and read it all in one sitting. And as soon as I write this review I will be reading book two.
I love the characters. Battered, broken, with pasts and a wide range of emotions they speak to everyone. I kind of wanted to hug Kaiden and make everything better from the very beginning. i was impressed with his ability to survive and hold on even when there was no reason for him to do so and was reminded that the strongest people are often the ones that need a shoulder to cry on the most. certainly true in his case. Xiva was a unique blend of emotions and the insight into her culture had me hoping she would get some kind of happily ever after. Both were so strong, in every way, and they had to be so often it made them fragile. the realism was simply amazing. i cannot wait to read book two. i got a review copy of this but its so good i will be buying it!

I really enjoyed the Codex Blair novels and thought I’d pick this one up while I waited for book 9. Big mistake.

This novel was a far cry from the other series, which was basically magical realism. This was sci-fi fantasy with a magical element. Really seemed interesting. But it fell so flat. I’m not saying the premise was terrible. It had a real Fifth Element vibe. But the writing style was terrible. Basically just a stream of consciousness verbal vomit session. The characters alternately narrate l, but even in their own thoughts, they constantly run up against themselves. The author seems to be working out the magic system, the history and the character arc out loud one thought at a time. Which is fine for a writing exercise, but definitely not for a finished novel.

I will admit that I came biased to this story as I've read - and thoroughly enjoyed - everything put out by Izzy Shows. Despite that I am sure they even a newcomer to this author's work will greeting enjoy it.

This is a great book on so many levels. The characters (especially Xiva and Kaiden and their forbidden attraction), the world-building is top notch, and the well written plot works perfectly. You can't go wrong taking this book for a spin.

Highly recommended.

Unusual and exciting fiction.

This isn't your ordinary science fiction story. There is a blending of the technology and magic of a decimated world and that of humanity looking for a new home. There is also a fight between gods and their avatars. Connecting all of it are two people from different worlds and times who must overcome their own inner pain and fears in order to fight the evil that would kill everyone in the galaxy.

I would recommend this book to anyone.

Not as enjoyable as some of her other work

3 star rating.
I've enjoyed some of the authors other work but not this one as much. The first half of the book was slow to start and very repetitive in its wording. The last half of the book did pick up and was much more intriguing. The storyline was a good one. The main plot is one I've read before in other authors work but still nice to see it twisted to show a different background and characters.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and WOW oh WOW, all I can say is this author has a new reader !!!! This is a world that was built full of suspense and intrigue with characters that are extremely easy to follow. I can not wait to see if we get to see more of Xiva and her world. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Nice but immature

Story feels like different scenes awkwardly put together. The main characters are over-emotional, too angsty to be realistic as adults. The story is not well fleshed-out. Nice idea but I think it would have benefitted from a longer time in story development.

Horrible

This is a romance. Worse than many actual romance books. Absolutely terrible. The author can write. It just happens to be garbage. It they chose to write a typical bodice ripper and just set it on another planet. Stick to non sci fi romance. You’d do great in that.

Internal monologue

This book was almost all internal monologue. It made the action very slow. Lots of it was the two main characters lusting after each other. The plot and setting were very interesting but I still couldn’t finish it.

I picked this up with a free KU subscription. Unfortunately this promises much but the writing doesn't deliver. Pages and pages of infodump before you even know who or where the main character is.

What?

At least this book centered on the inner thoughts of the character at the core of the story. Unfortunately, that's all I know at nine percent into it.

I don't know how this person's universe works. I don't know how the pirates were able to board the ship or why the rest of the crew wasn't roused. The descriptions of the transformation were confusing as the main character morphed into a reptilian animal.

I didn't have enough interest to read any further. Not good writing but more interesting than many I've read lately.

Slowly

Twas a little slow to begin with. But it slowly gained pace and became a credible story. Going through torturous pain as Kaidan became more fulfilled. To gloriously becoming as one with Xiva. And the finality of the epic battle. Looking forward to the next book and recommend to any to read Provoked. You won't be disappointed.
