I'm a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical western romance. I live in the Texas Panhandle on land they call the Llano Estacado where the Native Americans and Comancheros once roamed and I can often hear their voices whispering in the wind. History is thick here with the ghosts of the people who settled this land. I love writing western historical romance and can't imagine doing anything else. I love a man in a Stetson and tight pants. Oh man! Those cowboys sure make my heart beat faster.
Broday creates the perfect blend of romance, family, and adventure. Another fun book in her Texas Heroes Series.
To Catch a Texas Star follows Marley Rose and Roan’s story. You may remember Marley Rose as the cute little girl from Duel's story, but she’s all grown up now. After rescuing Roan, they’re thrown into a whirlwind of love and danger. A group of bandits are wrecking havoc on the towns, from killing innocent people to stealing Duel’s cattle. One of them is connected to Marley’s past and will stop at nothing to have her. With the help of Duel and his ranch hands, Roan fights to keep Marley safe and get justice for those (especially his friend) they hurt.
One thing I love about Boday’s writing is how easy it is to connect to the characters. I loved both Marley Rose and Roan. Duel and Jessie also play important roles in this book and I loved reconnecting with them too, but this could be read as a stand-alone and still be enjoyable.
I confirm what I said about the previous book: it's just tooooo sweet for me!
The story was not bad, with all the cattle stealing, fighting bad guys, saving womenfolk... But it was really way too saccharine!
But when you skim all the cheesy parts, you can like all the characters because they're stereotypical: honest, loving, charitable, strong, true... If an alien met them he would adopt the human race!

"Maybe her need to fix this stranger was because she had been the one to find him, and that made this connection so strong. All Marley knew was that she had to be the one to care for him."
I absolutely love historical western romances, and have read many of them over the years. I became a fan of Linda Broday's writing and story-telling after reading the first two books in the Texas Heroes series. So I didn't hesitate when I had the opportunity to read To Catch a Texas Star. This book focuses on Marley Rose, who was introduced in Knight on the Texas Plains as the baby that was won by Duel in a poker game. I loved her in that book, so I was really excited when I found out that this book was about her. She was raised by amazing parents (Duel and Jessie), and I was glad that they played an important role in this book as well. It was great to be reunited with them, and see what they had been up to.
"You're like those shooting stars we watched. You blaze across a man's life with such a streak of color and pageantry it steals his breath. You're my Texas star, Marley Rose McClain."
The other main character is Roan Penny. I loved him from the start and knew he would be a great hero. I enjoyed seeing the connection between him and Marley develop. It was beautiful seeing how these two got along, and how they inspired each other. This book was so much more than just a romance. It was fun, suspenseful, emotional and action-packed. There was even a bit of mystery the characters were trying to figure out. Everything came together perfectly and I think this book was a great way to conclude this awesome series. This book is longer than what I usually read, but it didn't feel long at all. The author used every page resourcefully and made sure that the reader was engaged and hooked until the end.
Miss Marley Rose captured our hearts in Knight On The Texas Plains, now her story continues in Linda Broday’s, To Catch A Texas Star. I cannot praise this book enough. Ms. Broday invites us onto the Aces and Eights Ranch and into the lives of the McClain’s. The fast rollercoaster drama she incorporates leaves her readers on the edge of their seats not knowing where the next wave of bullets will strike. As evil rides down on the McClain’s, it will take everyone’s help to save them from the terror heading their way. The emotional revelation Marley Rose encounters will leave you drying your eyes. Drifter Roan Penny will notch a place in your heart that will forever remain embedded. Marley and Roan truly needed one another, not just for love, but for healing, comfort, and sense of belonging. Duel and Jessie, with their kind caring hearts for those neglected, just confirms how love “knows, no boundary” and blood kin doesn’t always make a family. I highly recommend this book of honor, family, and love. Miss Broday’s best book to date. So saddle up, pull your hat down low, and hang on tight. This book starts out fast and furious and doesn’t stop until the conclusion.
Saddle up your horses!!! Linda Broday is about to take her readers on a great adventure in her new book, To Catch A Texas Star!!! Just possibly the read of a lifetime!! I do believe this is Linda Broday’s best book to date! It was one of the best Western Historical books I have read yet!! Linda Broday has a God given talent with her writing that can pull her readers into a story and give them a front and center view, as it unfolds. Her books can rival any Best Western of our times. She never lacks for an Old Wild West, true to life story. One can almost believe her books are true life events with all the emotional charged energy she pours into each and every story she writes. To Catch a Texas Star finds readers with Duel and Jessie once again on their Ranch Aces and Eights and see the beautiful young lady their daughter Marley Rose has become. Marley comes upon Roan Penny, a badly beaten, nearly dead man on side of the road and being as loving and compassionate as her parents, Marley brings him home to see to his wounds. Things just go from there and you will just have to read the book, to see how it all falls into place.
Where to start, I have been wanting Marley's story since Duel won her in a porker game. We just had to wait for her to grow up. Linda Broday has written a book that has more twists, secrets, adventures and lots of love. Who will be good enough for Marley? It will take a strong, determine man to be good enough for Marley, enter in Roan Penny. From the first meeting to the end of the book, you will not want to put this book down.

To Catch a Texas Star is the third book in this lovely trilogy, and this story is Marley's story. Marley Rose is the daughter of Duel and Jessie. She lives with a huge family. Her parents take in every child that end up finding that are in need of a loving home. Marley has no clue about her past or about her birthright and who her birth parents really are. Marley has dreams of her own. She would love to have a family of her own but she also has a beautiful talent that she wishes to cultivate. Roan, has always been on his own and has tried to make a good life for himself. But when his closest friend is murdered and he is almost killed himself all he cares about is justice. When Marley finds Roan on the side of the road, barely alive, she brings him home and tends him and brings him back to health. And both Roan and Marley are taken on a dangerous journey that will only strengthen the close intimacy they have built and the love they share...
This was a powerhouse of a story, now I wouldn't say that this would be my favorite book from this author. I had, at times, had a difficult time getting fully into the story at times especially in the first up. However I was really into the later half of the story. I was thrilled to hear that the heroine would be Marley Rose. In book one, we see how Duel and Jessie have fared over the years. We see the close relationship that Marley Rose has with her parents. But her family has a enemy, an enemy that is Roan's enemy.
The plot of the story is what really was most intriguing and I loved the twists and turns that this story takes on. It is pretty interesting seeing this romance blossom and how much their relationship strengths as they face danger and the truth together. I loved the history and the realstic elements of the west and the dangers that many people lived in those times.
To Catch a Texas Star by the most talented author Linda Broday is an amazing book!! From the beginning to the end it kept me on the edge of my chair. First Roan finding himself in the awful situation that happened because he was trying to help his friend. Then Marley Rose finding him and taking him home with her so that she and her parents could help nurse him back to health. Matt the mischievious little brother was a cutie pie! It's one of my favorite "Linda" books!! But then I love all of Linda Broday's books that I 've read so far!! Oh, and this was not the first time we met Marley Rose! She was first introduced as a baby in Knight of the Texas Plains, another great story by Ms Broday!! You must read to find out all the great details!!
Y’all, when this beauty popped up in our blogger group for sign-up, I nearly tripped over my own cowgirl boots to review TO CATCH A TEXAS STAR by Linda Broday. Just between y’all and me, I may have (accidentally-on-purpose) tripped one or two of my blogger friends in order to get to the front of the line. I ain’t ashamed, I tell ya!
Now, this ain’t my first rodeo in reading and reviewing Ms. Broday’s work. Y’all can read my review of her book, TO MARRY A TEXAS OUTLAW by clicking right here. So, when I saw that Lone Star Literary Life was bringing her back on tour, I was over the moon like a shootin’ star, yo!
TO CATCH A TEXAS STAR by Linda Broday arrived in my mailbox on a scorching hot Texas summer day (my personal favorite type of day, I might add). I knew I wouldn’t be dismayed, because 1.) Broday’s cover art is always gorgeous, and 2.) She always sends an autographed review copy. Still, I held my breath as I tore open the envelope and gingerly removed the ARC … and, oh, what is that?! A SIGNED POSTCARD! YASSSSSSSS!!!!!
“Surely, she didn’t send a signed postcard in lieu and an unsigned ARC,” I thought to myself. Carefully, I turned back the lovely cover (‘cause, by now, y’all know I like my books to remain looking brand-spanking-new), and there it was! Her autograph! YEEHAW!!!!!
Alright, alright, keep your hats on! I’ll get on with the review. Sheesh!
It’s the Fall of 1899 when the reader steps into this story and lands smack-dab in the middle of Central Texas (see what I did there?). The first person the reader meets is a smolderingly handsome cowboy named Roan Penny. Now, Roan’s had a rugged life, but he hasn’t let it turn him into a bitter man with a hard heart. And maybe that’s because of his friend, a good ol’ fella named Mose who took him in and treated him like family…something Roan never really had before, well, except for the old lady his sorry father had given him to the day his mother died. But, I digress… It’s nighttime, and the moon is waning. That can only mean one thing to Roan: something bad was about to happen. And boy does it ever.
I won’t give any spoilers here, ‘cause y’all know I never do. (Why do y’all keep asking me to?) But the harbinger moon brings some bad deeds and ends up leaving Roan for dead among the bushes far from Mose’s farm.
Enter the lovely Marley Rose. She’s had everything that Roan’s never had: a happy home, family, and dreams. She rescues the man who looks more dead than alive and takes him back to Aces ‘n’ Eights, her father’s ranch.
And that’s where it all begins!
Will Marley Rose win over the heart of the handsome stranger she’d rescued? Or will Roan Penny decide he’s too much trouble for the lovely brunette who nurses him back to health in heart, body, and soul? What happened to his old friend Mose the night the moon hung low in the sky? I ain’t gonna tell y’all.
But, I will tell y’all this – y’all’ve gotta read this book. I wouldn’t ever lie to y’all.
Ms. Broday’s writing is that comfortable, engaging style that lulls the reader into the story by degrees until, suddenly, the real world disappears and the words on the page become reality. Her worldbuilding and character development is so rich, it’s delicious. So, brew up a strong cup of joe (‘cause this book will keep you up ‘till the wee hours of the morn), and snuggle in for a cozy read.
Oh, and don’t forget to scroll down and ENTER TO WIN a generous giveaway!!!
Linda Broday is the Queen of Western Romance! Hands down!!! Every book delivers over and over again. And To Catch a Texas Star is one of the greats!
In this third book in the series we get to look into Marley Rose’s life. She lives in her own small house on the Aces & Eights Ranch with her parents and helps take care of all of the orphan children her mother (Jessie) brings in.
Roan Penny is a drifter staying with his good friend when the local riff-raff comes along and kills his friend and drags him behind a horse. Later Marley Rose finds him along the side of the road and brings him home to nurse him back to health.
They find that they are like magnets to each other and soon fall in love. However they have a common enemy. Can they defeat this enemy and find the happiness they deserve?
This book is packed full of action, romance and drama. I love the descriptions that Mrs. Broday puts into her books. The scenery, the smells, the lighting, even down to the wallpaper and the patterns of china that are used in the books. All of those things take you back to the 1800’s as though you are there with them. I go on an adventure every time I pick up a Linda Broday book.

I loved this book! I was so excited to read Marley Rose's story when she was all grown up. And Ms. Broday didn't disappoint in giving Marley one of the most wonderful and brave cowboy heroes I've had the honor to meet between the pages of a book. Their romance was the stuff that legends are made of, intertwined with enough action, suspense, along with bad guys/gals to keep you guessing until the very end if Marley and Roan could survive the forces aligned against them and find their well-deserved happily-ever-after. And giving Marley her own dreams and aspirations and talents, especially in this time period, was an added bonus for readers. You wanted Marley to realize her dreams with her handsome hero, as well as the dreams that would fulfill her passions and talents. Another Keeper from Linda Broday!
In To Catch A Texas Star, Marley Rose McClain, is all grown up and is a strong young lady that has a very busy but happy life at the Aces and Eights Ranch with her parents and siblings. Her parents have built a life taking in children and babies that had no one. I fell in love with Marley Rose in the Knight on the Texas Plains (Texas Heroes #1) when Duel McClain won her in a poker game. I came into this book with high hopes for Marley Rose to have a happy and fulfilling life and Linda Broday did not disappoint me but she never does! She had me on edge of my sit wanting and needing to know what was going to happen next from the very first page. Broday is an excellent story writer that I have learned so much history from in her novels and blogs. Every time I think I have a favorite Linda Broday novel she writes a new book and To Catch a Texas Star did not disappoint. On an ordinary day Marley Rose heads out to town to get supplies for the ranch. Little does she know that it is not an ordinary day at all and what she finds on the side of the road to town will change her entire future.
Roan Penny is a drifter that has been on his own since he ran away from home at the age of 12. He has no one in his life except a friend that has taken him in. That is until a group of hooded men ride in and kill that friend, burn down the house and barn he owned saying that Mose is a tresspasser on the land. The hooded men, that appear to be nothing more than boys, except for the older leader with the raspy voice, beat Roan and drag him behind a horse and leave him for dead. Roan is now on a mission to find out who the man with the raspy voice is, why he has boys riding with him and to get revenge for Mose.
There has been a group of men terrorizing settlers in the area. They've been stealing cattle and attempting and sometimes succeeding in getting families to move off their land and flee fearing their safety. Roan is out to find out if these men are somehow associated with the gang of boys.
This book has love, evil, life lessons, hope, justice and so many other things that make a great novel that its sure to be a favorite of yours just like it is mine.
Finished To Catch a Texas Star! Where to begin... The action alone kept me on edge with concern, cheers, and tears. From the first chapter, it was evident that putting this book down was going to be difficult. Marley Rose and Roan Penny were characters with so much depth, color, and vitality that I want to meet them and get to become friends. The intricate weaving of the suspense with the heartwarming moments reveals a mastery of writing skill. The details lend a picture so vivid that it plays in the minds eye like a movie. This book definitely should have a label to be read with tissues at hand. The emotional ride through the rough terrain and on to the times of loving, heartfelt moments of family, loyalty, and sacrifice keeps you fully engaged in this beautiful story. (Spoiler alert): Tying up some questions from previous stories was another great surprise. 5 Stars is not enough for the best of this series.
Good story. I really liked Roan and Marley very much, and Matt was super sweet. Granny added a bit of fun to the story as well. The only thing was I got to the point where I was ready for them to wrap things up. It seemed to drag a bit with the bad guy. Other than that it was a sweet story.
4.5 shootin' stars for Marley Rose and Roan Penny!
I have a soft spot for the McClain family ever since first meeting Duel and Jessie in Knight on the Texas Plain and was ecstatic to learn that we'd get Marley's story in To Catch a Texas Star. And boy, I was NOT disappointed at all!! On the first page I was transported back in time and landed in the middle of trouble and the journey just rolled on from there.
Marley Rose has one of the most gentle and winsome souls; her affection and compassion for others and delightful creativity pour off the pages and you can't help but adore her.
Roam Penny has this bone-deep fortitude and integrity about him that draws you in and keeps your attention. Marley found a man who was like her father in the way he cared for and protected his family - to his last breath if need be. But I also think he was like Granny Jack's cats -- that man had 9 lives and wasn't afraid to use them! haha!
There were so many little enjoyable tid-bits and discoveries wrapped up in the pages that helped to set the scene and give some happy-feel-good moments. This worked well to balance out the adventure and danger and poignant moments. I enjoyed getting to experience life with the McClains again and see their new happily ever after.
To Catch a Texas Star by Linda Broday is the 3rd book in her Texas Heroes western historical romance series. I loved both books in this series, and I am happy to say this was as equally as good. I do not read much western romances, but I have come to love Linda Broday’s writing and I will continue to read her books.
At the start, we meet our hero, Roan Penny, who is a drifter, working for a local rancher. Roan has befriended the rancher who had become his friend, and when a group of vigilantes attack the ranch and kill the rancher, Roan is determined to enact revenge. But unfortunately for Roan, the attackers beat him badly, putting him on horse and leaving him barely alive.
Marley Rose, who was the precious child when we spent time with Duel and Jessie McClain (previous book heroes) years before. Marley is now all grown up, and it is she who will come across the badly beaten Roan. She will bring him back to the Aces and Eights ranch, which her mother and father run and where she and all her siblings live. We knew that Duel and Jessie were very caring and loving people, and it is no surprise to see that besides Marley, they have over the years taken in a number of lost or abandoned children.
Both Marley and Jessie see to Roan’s wounds, as his life hangs by a thread. Roan slowly begins to gain his conscious, and is immediately calmed by the voice of the woman taking care of him. Marley herself has been somewhat sheltered by her parents, and finds that she is becoming attracted to Roan. It will take Roan more time to gain his strength, and in time Duel, who senses that Roan is one of the good guys, will trust him. After telling the family about his attack and the death of his friend, Duel offers him a job on the ranch, allowing him to be able to work and have the time get better, before he tries to find the culprits.
Marley and Roan find themselves falling hard for each other, though Roan feels there is no future, since he will probably get killed going after the attackers. But everything he was missing all his life, was right there in Marley… love, happiness, family, togetherness. Will Roan give up everything he has always wanted to pursue a dangerous mission and leave Marley?
Marley was not only sweet, gentle, caring and lovable to everyone, but she is also very strong and determined in her own rights. She refuses to allow Roan to put himself in danger, and is determined to help him.
What follows is an exciting action packed adventure that will put all of them in danger, as they try to find out who is behind the murder, as well as the stolen cattle off the ranch. Most of all, the main villain is evil, and determined to get Marley at any cost. Can Roan save her?
To Catch a Texas Star is a unique and wonderful story of two people very much different who will find love for each other, find a way to survive the evil chasing them throughout this story.
I really loved this heartwarming story, as Marley and Roan were a wonderful couple. Spending time with Duel, Jessie and the other children was also fun. Linda Broday once again gives us another wonderful couple, sweet romance, great secondary characters, action and so very well written. I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this heartwarming story, and the wonderful characters Linda Broday has created. I strongly suggest you read To Catch a Texas Star.
Since Duel McClain won sweet baby, Marley Rose, in a poker game, and then rescued Jessie to bring them home as his family in Knight of the Texas Plains, I have been waiting for things to come full circle with Marley Rose's story as an adult I was not disappointed with the heartwarming, the family love, the heartbreaking, and the western historical past come alive in this wonderful story.
To Catch a Texas Star is the third book in the Texas Heroes series. I suppose one could get away with reading it standalone, but I did enjoy it best after at least having read the first book that starts it all.
So, yes, Marley Rose is grown up. Reared in a lovely, generous and giving large family thanks to Jessie's continued need to bring home orphaned or abandoned children. Marley lives alone in her own place on the ranch and helps. The story gets going when she encounters Roan Parrish left along the side of the road after he watched someone he was closer to than family get killed for his land and then Roan drug behind horses and left for dead. He now has an enemy to find and make pay for what was done to Mose and what is happening to many others in the region.
I was so curious to see who would become Marley's hero and I loved Roan from the start. He has his mind set on dealing with what the villain's started, but his love for Marley grows and he is so good for her. He has his own tough past as the son of an outlaw. He's tough and determined, but protective and such a great hero. Marley has grown into a woman to ride the river with and proves herself during the tough times that are come for the McClains because of an evil enemy to them and Roan.
This book gave the reader so much. All my emotions were touched even some great fun times, especially with Granny, all the way to a teary-eyed moment. Exciting western action and even a mystery are tossed in for good measure, but overall that is the romance that was delectable and the strong sense of McClain family love that pulls in Roan, too.
All in all, I couldn't have been more pleased with this one especially since my expectations were high in anticipation of Marley Rose's story. Western Historical Romance fans can't go wrong with this author's books, but particularly this book/series. Love the McClains and was sorry to see the end of this book.
My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
To Catch a Texas Star is the third book in the Texas Heroes series, but the first one I've read. It's actually the first book by Linda Broday that I've ever read. I like it. I like her writing style. This book stands well on its own, but reading the two that came before it would probably enhance the enjoyment.
Texas Star is fast-paced and action-packed, featuring well-drawn characters you'd root for and the wild West as the exciting setting. At the center of everything is a sweet romance between Marley, a strong, caring young woman, and Roan, a determined, honorable drifter. Their story happens amidst grave danger and life-altering secrets.
This book captured my attention from the beginning with its dramatic first chapter. It kept getting better as the characters are introduced (Duel, Jessie, Matt, Granny Jack, etc.) and as the attraction between Marley and Roan grew. I liked that both of them have strengths and faults. I appreciate that they saved each other's lives. Often in Westerns, the heroine is a damsel in distress, just waiting for the hero to rescue her. This one is not like that. Marley had her low moments, especially when she was scared for her family, but she had amazing highs like when she rescued herself and when she acted to make it easy for the good guys to win in the end.
This book follows in the classic Western formula of heroes being amazingly good (and seemingly indestructible) while the villains are incredibly bad. You can easily visualize this as a movie for Ms. Broday described the action and fight scenes well.
As a Texas resident, I like the feeling of being "at home" when I read a book set here. But, even those not from here will enjoy To Catch a Texas Star as it tackles universal themes of family, justice, loyalty, and deep-abiding love.
Big thanks to Sourcebooks for providing me with an advance copy to review.
This historical romance has the tropes of classic Western movie. The bad guys are really bad, (except for those who are kids and don’t really understand what they’ve become involved in), and the good guys are noble and kind.
The hero, Roan Penny, is a wanderer who was cast out by his father. He could have become a loser outlaw, but instead he is a man of honor. When his one friend is brutally murdered and he’s terribly beaten, he resolves to revenge his friend’s murder. This takes him to a nearby ranch, the Aces & Eights, where his life is saved by the daughter of the ranch, Marley Rose McClain. Of course, they fall in love. She is naive and sweet, but handily enough, she also knows medical care and is a crack markswoman.
They work together to figure out who is behind the evil in the region. And it is real evil and becomes even more evil as we and they learn more. If you like that sort of set-up on the Texas frontier, you’ll enjoy this.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
My first ever book that I have read by Linda Broday and all I can say is WOW!!!! I can seriously say it will not be my last I’m going to get the previous two in this series. This was easily read as a stand-alone I had no problems getting into the book whatsoever. A fast paced rollercoaster ride full of action had me gripping my tablet in anticipation, believe me I read this way way past my bed time! I loved Roan Penny his father’s legacy as an outlaw follows him like a shadow, he knows that deeds speak louder and what better way than being a hero which leaves him seriously injured and almost at deaths door. That’s how Marley Rose finds him, she brings him home to heal and care for him. As the two get to know each other Marley not only heals Roan she captures his heart! The two really have a connection of spirit and soul. Just when Roan believes he’s found his forever place evil reaches out to destroy their newfound love! He’ll fight to the death to keep the woman that holds his heart in her hands! Lots of action and descriptive detail of life in the Wild West, reading Linda Broday’s book was like a movie for the mind! AMAZING!!!!! Easily a TEN STAR!
I recieved a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This was my honest unbiased opinion!
A wonderful heartwarming story. I will say this one started slowly for me but the finish was spot on. I enjoyed the way Marley and Roan’s romance developed throughout the story. This is a very sweet story complete with great characters, romance, and adventure.
I loved this fast-paced action packed love story. The characters were engaging, the love between Roan and Marley Rose, sweet and steamy. This author knows how to pull you into the story from the beginning to the end and to make you care about her characters and look forward to reading more. I received this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
To Catch a Texas Star, reads like the sequel to, Knight on the Texas Plains. Marley Rose, is a toddler in, Knight on the Texas Plains. In, To Catch a Texas Star, she is all grown up and ready to find out what her life is going to lead her. Right to Roan, that's where. Not only do we get to read about the budding love between Roan and Marley, while they fight to stay alive. We also get to see what has happens to Duel and Jessie's family and relationship. They play a large part in this book. So it is my suggestion to read, Knight on the Texas Plains, before reading this book.
“To Catch a Texas Star” is the third installment in Linda Broday’s Texas Heroes series and I believe it is one of the best novels she has written to date. Roan Penny has had a hard life due in part to his father abandoning him at a young age and telling him that he was worthless and would never amount to anything. He finally felt at home with his friend Moze Mozeke until one fateful night when he found himself at the wrong end of the rope. Marley McClain craves peace and quiet and when she is given an opportunity to go to town on her own to get supplies she finds Roan Penny half dead alongside the road and knows that she needs to get him home if he has any chance of surviving the night. Roan’s need to heal is not only physically, but mentally and thanks to Marley and her family he may find just what he needs. I was given an advanced copy of this book, and all of the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
If you are a fan of Ms. Broday you won’t be disappointed. Third book in her series “Texas Hero’s”. If you haven’t read a Broday novel but enjoy historical western romances you will be a future fan. The book can be a stand alone but I really suggest reading the series in order. Especially since you can read then all at one time. I went back and reread “Knights on the Texas Plains” to remind myself of the history of Duel and Jessie. I enjoyed reading both. I hope we get to read more of this family.
One of many favorite lines "He didn't need to stand in a storm and dare lightning to hit him to know this kiss held equal power." Duel and Jessie McClain's Marley Rose is all grown up. When she finds a more dead than alive Roan Penny and brings him to the Aces & Eights, lives are forever changed. I can always count on Linda Broday's storytelling to take me on a special journey. In To Catch A Texas Star, I met characters I loved and those I hated, adventurous twists and turns, laugh out loud moments, beautiful scenery, friendship and loyalty. There was also injustice, unfairness, prejudice and evil. Most powerful of all was the underlying message of love's triumph over the darkness of hate and true love remains undefeated.
I adore Marley and her spirit. She’s feisty and independent, both great qualities in a heroine. As Marley tells her father, Duel:
“I’ll be fine,” Marley assured him. “I’m not some spineless little girl who wrings her hands and waits for someone to ride to her rescue.”
Bonus point for self-rescuing princesses! I also appreciate that Ms. Brody writes Marley as a storyteller and artist. Marley creates stories for all the children. She also attempts to illustrate her stories with paintings and drawings. Her ability to take a small idea and make it into an full story is amazing. I’m guessing it’s a similar process that Ms. Brody goes through when writing her novels. Roan had a rough childhood and not much better luck as an adult. But what really impresses me is that, despite all his hardship, he’s capable of loving, protecting, and supporting Marley. I also really admire the connection Roan has with the adopted kids on the ranch, especially Matt. Roan sees himself in Matt and shows his true character when he’s around the children. The romance between Marley and Roan is believable, if a bit rushed. I welcomed how they support and encourage each other. For example, Roan encourages Marley to submit her stories to a publisher. And when none of the ranch hands are available to support Roan during his horse race in the next county, Marley is there for him. These two characters really bring out the best in each other. My favorite secondary character in To Catch a Texas Star is definitely Granny Jack. She’s a hoot. And I’m totally making her catch phrase my own!
“Honey, every tub has got to sit on its own bottom.”
That makes me laugh each time I think about it. Classic Granny Jack! I also really enjoyed catching up with Duel and Jessie from Knight on the Texas Plains. For me, it’s always great to see a couple I fell in love with still happily in love after close to twenty years together. The romance in To Catch a Texas Star may have caught my initial attention, but the mystery plot kept me reading. Ms. Brody does a fabulous job weaving together separate plot lines of discovering who is trying to destroy the Aces ‘n’ Eights Ranch by wrangling cattle with the mystery of who killed Roan’s friend Mose and left Roan for dead. There were a few twists and turns that I didn’t see coming in the road. Kudos to Ms. Broday for seamlessly blending the plot! Overall, To Catch a Texas Star is a great historic romance with strong, well-developed characters. Highly recommended! 4 1/2 Stars!
To Catch a Texas Star is the third instalment in Linda Broday’s Texas Heroes series. I haven’t read the previous entry in the series, but this didn’t end up being a problem for me as the author has crafted a story that stands perfectly well on its own.
Roan Penny has drifted from place to place since his bank robber father abandoned him. When his friend and employer is killed, and Roan is badly injured by a masked gang Roan is hellbent on revenge.
Marley Rose McClain discovers a badly beaten, nearly dead Roan on side of the road and brings him home to see to his wounds. Marley struggles to find herself in her loud, loving family that continues to grow as more strays arrive. Finding a purpose in caring for Roan she is reluctant to see him leave.
With cattle rustlers terrorizing the Aces and Eights Ranch, could Roan’s enemies be closer to him than he thinks?
Linda Broday excels at creating a realistic setting. The wild wet was a scary and dangerous place and Ms Broday does not shy away from the gruesome realities that existed for the people of that time. The characters are well developed and engaging, the dialogue is witty, and the plot is intriguing. The relationship is a slow build with a perfect blend of angst and passion. I would recommend this book.
