Humorous and fun. Strong needs to learn that even if you do not have a defined relationship with a vampire but you both understand there is something there, do not go out on a date with someone else. You are just asking Karma to slap you.

Simon has a date with Katja, daughter of a local businessman who is making a business deal that Simon thinks is a bad idea. The prospect of combining a pleasant night out with a chat about this deal seems a good idea and Simon is looking forward to it. Monty thinks it is a very bad idea to go on a date when Michiko, a dangerous vampire, has her own idea that Simon belongs to her, even though nothing has happened between them. Monty is sure that she is going to be very unhappy when she hears about it, and with her contacts, she'll hear about it instantly.

But dinner is interrupted when an troll comes in and tries to attack Katja. It's clear that her father has upset the wrong people and her abduction or death is to be the punishment. Simon calls on Monty for help as the troll chases them all over town but how can it be stopped and are they going to need the help of Michiko? The story was amusing and entertaining but I do wish that Monty was the senior MC rather than Simon all the time as Monty is my favourite. I do like a lot of the side characters that keep coming into the stories too. I've read a few short stories and the first book in the series and I continue to enjoy reading about what the guys get up to on their adventures.

More clarity

Now, I understand the jokes about Simon’s ill fated date! This story is the butt of so many jokes at Simon’s expense. Fun, Simon and Monty style.

Short but sweet

Another fun story. It was interesting to read what happened on the date since it was starting to feel like the spaghetti incident from calvin and hobbes.

I just finished reading this and I do like his books. I really like Simon and Monty. The only issue I have is that it's really the same thing book after book. They get in trouble with some supernatural creature or another, Monty gets them out of it (or someone else once in awhile), Simon gets blamed, The End. I like the different characters he comes up with. I even like the trouble they get into. It's just that it's becoming predictable. I just hope things start getting shook up a bit more.

In this one I was looking for answers to Michiko, and I guess I got a couple, but not the ones I was looking for. Not sure if I'll ever find out how they actually got involved. But this one was ok. I'm not going to call it one of the best because it wasn't. At least not as far as I've read so far.

I'm going to keep trying. If you're at book 4, keep trying too. I have a feeling they get better from everything I've heard.

Heather's Note
This would probably have been better to read after starting the series. I didn't know the players and think I missed some of the nuances. I definitely missed the "easter eggs" the author was talking about.

Fabulous!

We asked for it and Mr. Sanchez delivered in a big way! Monty and Strong just become more enjoyable the more we know about them and The Date is no exception. I'd call it a succulent appetizer for its size if it wasn't sandwiched somewhere in the middle of a series. It is amazing how such a wonderful story can spring from one offhand remark in a previous book. And Mr. Sanchez is, once again, correct. As delightful as this story is, it raises far more questions than it answers. Personally, I can hardly wait to read on to find out what else is in store for Monty and Strong and maybe get some of those answers!

This is a short story, but just as good as the longer books in this series. It is about how Simon wants to have a nice date without any magic, or mayhem. Yet maybe Monty's words ring a little truth when he tells Simon, he is wearing the suit he can be buried in.

But what does Simon have to worry about? His awful luck of attracting dangerous things? Or the fact that his girlfriend is head of the Dark Council and a tad bit the over jealous type? And so what if a troll shows up...

Funny story and now we know what happened on the date that is referred to in the second Monty and Simon books.

Case file to answer what happened in that Date
Monty and Simon have already appeared in 3 books, starting with Tombyards and Butterflies and No God is Safe which is a Case File which tells us all how the British Mage and American supernatural go-to immortal met and started working together. This case file tells how a Date, that Simon wishes others would forget, actually went and I loved it. Although I read it in the order of being written I'm sure this could be read as an introduction or at any point in the series and, as with all books in the series, is sure to entertain with action and humour.

Highly entertaining as is the Montague and Strong series. I read this out of order and kept coming across references to 'The Date' in books 4 - 6 of this series. I finally got on the author's web site and discovered the reading order, picked up this one, and am glad I did! Now I understand the snide comments aimed towards Simon. Simon claimed that he just wanted to enjoy a night out with a normal human (who happens to be stunning and rich). His date is not Michiko, she's wanted by powerful people who want to get even with something that her father did, and, well, the date turns into mayhem in a hurry. Typical Simon. What a fun story and series.

Poor Simon!

Our snarky, beloved, immortal illustrious Mage's sidekick (HA!) just can't catch a break. He only wanted a couple hours with an old friend, CEO of a family operated and owned company - dinner, some reminiscing, and to warn her about some clients her father had dealings with.
They made it to dinner, but nothing goes quite right for Strong, his hot date, or anyone else on the date of a lifetime. And that makes it highly entertaining, loads of fun to read, witty with never a dull moment, and well worth your time to sit down and read this.

Finally we know what happened on the Date! Chaotic hilarity! Should have guessed that part, as this is an M&S story. Definitely a fun short story full of the expected snark, destruction, and supernatural mayhem. Plus, we get to witness Simon squirm a bit under the pretense that this isn't his fault. Good times.

Montague and Strong short story, telling of the events in the mentioned offhand (in the main series) date that the immortal detective Simon Strong went on, and the chaos that ensued.

Lots of destruction, a bit of humour, and with the story (probably) raising more questions than it answers and, as such, whetting the appetite for the main course = job done!

Less destruction than usual

Wherever Simon and Monty go, chaos follows. Just not the god, this time. I would have given this 5 stars but I kept waiting for Chi to rip Kat's throat out. Either the vampire is far less psychotic than Simon makes her out to be, or the throat ripping takes place later.

This was a quick read. A novella that covers an experience that other characters continually refer to in all the books in the series. Now I'm waiting for more about these guys and maybe just maybe if the authors fanboying pays off we'll see a collaboration where both their characters interact. Now that would be great fun!

Poor Simon... All he wanted was a quite date... Of course not having Chi as his date was likely to be a baaaad idea... but taking a female friend out for a date to warn her of problems with her father's "supernatural" connections turns iut to be a very, very baaaad idea... and Simon will be hearing out that Date for millennia.

A date with no frolicking

This was another fun short story. I wish these stories were illustrated because the characters seem so interesting! It was nice to see Strong trying to have a normal life. It seems they’re usually in the middle of a case that has dire consequences for everyone. A fun, quick read.

Strong’s date will be remembered

Strong goes on a date and a troll assassin is coming for his date to kill her. Both Strong, Monty, and Chi team up to kill the assassin and to save Strong’s date. In the end Katja had to use a dagger on his eyes to stop the troll. Once the troll was dispatched then Katja was returned to her father.

Make a date for The Date

This is a fantastic short story in the Montague and Strong series. It can be read independent of the other books, but helps fill in the blanks around the infamous Date.

Always a pleasure to read books from Mr Sanchez.
They keep you entertained from start to finish.
No matter whether they are short stories giving you a side view on the characters or a full length story-line the books are worth reading more than once.

Good fun and fast paced novella that fills in some of the gaps and answers some of the questions that fans of the Montague and Strong novels have been asking since the beginning of our adventures with Simon and Monty. Recommended for anyone who loves the series

I love a good short story

Reading a good short story is better than flipping through magazines while waiting somewhere. The date did not disappoint. It was a high speed adventure full of fun .

Simon tries to have a simple date with a beautiful woman (not his lady love). Instead he gets chased all over the city, has gross destruction laid at his feet, and gets banned from one of his favorite restaurants.

Grin & bear it

This is a quick scene full of humour & destruction. Poor Simon, he can't catch a break & he thinks he's protecting his date. Monty & Chi are the supporting caste & we get a troll for the bad guy.

When Strong learned that when a centuries old vampire with lots of power who's one of the movers and shakers in your town is in love with you, it is very not smart to try to date someone else.

Mayhem, destruction, and good laughs.

The date!

This was a fun, and messy, and, lethal account of Simon's attempt at going on a date (with someone other than Chi). It didn't go well... For Simon, or his date, and for various parts of the city for that matter ;)

Filled with action and humor.

Simon goes on a date. A rampaging troll is sent to kill his date, Katja. Their is action and a lot of damage. Chi and Monty join in fight against the troll. Peaches is not in the story.
