Im Oktober 1944 taucht auf einem Bauernhof in Niederösterreich ein ungefähr dreizehnjähriges Mädchen auf, verstört und offenbar ohne Erinnerung. Nelli wird aufgenommen und wächst in die Familie hinein. Einige Monate später kommt eines Nachts ein junger Russe auf den Hof. Er hat nichts bei sich außer einer Leinwandrolle, die er hütet wie seinen Augapfel. Zwischen ihm und dem Mädchen entspinnt sich eine zarte Beziehung, die durch das Eintreffen einer Gruppe von Wehrmachtssoldaten jäh unterbrochen wird. Glanzvoll und fulminant erzählt Paulus Hochgatterer die Geschichte eines verschollenen Gemäldes – und von einem einfachen Mann, der zum Helden wird.

Paulus Hochgatterer’s novella’s set in the Austrian countryside towards the end of WW2, a young girl whose name may or may not be Nelli’s living with a farmer and his family, displaced by the war her origins are uncertain. The story’s primarily told from Nelli’s point of view but interspersed with short, self-contained accounts that appear to spin off from her interpretation of events, each of these in turn’s represented in conflicting terms, a tragedy occurs but is also seemingly, miraculously averted. It’s an elliptical, fragmented piece, a sense that’s intensified by being filtered through the perspective of a traumatized child – presumably drawn in part from Hochgatterer’s other life as a child psychiatrist - so that what’s significant and what’s not becomes tangled up with what Nelli sees, believes or chooses to confide. What’s evident is that the farming and local town community are tense and anxious, exhausted by years of bombardments and conflict. Part of what Hochgatterer appears to be dealing with here is the way in which Austria or Austrian witnesses of WW2 process memories of that era, or construct their version of what they were responsible for during that time. The stories slipped in alongside Nelli’s narrative are at their starkest suggestive of terrible acts and their benign reversioning perhaps what people would prefer to have happened or maybe neither is true. There are numerous references to differing accounts of the lives of the martyrs, which Nelli relishes recounting to the farmer’s younger daughters, suggesting a preoccupation with the veracity of anything passed down through time, accounts that have shifted from historical to barely remembered yet held onto, endlessly told and retold taking on a purely symbolic meaning. It’s a well-crafted narrative, for me a little too well-crafted, so that even when events took an ominous turn, I was curiously unmoved, even unconvinced by them, maybe because for all its lyrical prose and skilful plotting I found its themes and much of the underlying territory overfamiliar and even slightly stale.

Kleine Erzählung aus den letzten Kriegstagen 1945 auf einem Bauernhof in Niederösterreich. Sprachlich schön, aber nichts, was mir in ein paar Wochen noch in Erinnerung bleiben wird. Die Offenlegung verschiedener möglicher Buchenden durch den Autor mag zwar für die Literaturkritik raffiniert erscheinen, mich hat es eher unbefriedigt zurückgelassen.

In October 1944, a thirteen year old girl a thirteen year old girl arrives in a small farming community in lower Austria, some distance from theatre of war. She remember very little about how she got there. It seems she suffered a trauma from bombardment. One night a few months later, a young emaciated Russian appears. He's a deserter from forced labour in the East. The only thing he has with him is a canvas roll which he guards like a hawk. Their burgeoning friendship is abruptly interrupted by the arrival of a group of Wehmacht soldiers who commandeer the farm.

This novella is told from Nelli's perspective. The story is told over two,days with some short stories in between. For such a short story it's multilayered. It's also told in intricate detail.

Novella set in 1945 AUSTRIA



This is one of the shortest books I have read in a long while. It is the story of a community and the varied cast of characters involved. There is a pervasive weariness amongst the disparate group of villagers after several years of war. It is 1945 and of course it is nearing its conclusion (not, of course, that the people know this). They have not really been directly involved in conflict but the ramifications of bloodshed and loss are everywhere.

They have to regroup when, in the previous Autumn, a 13 year old girl arrived, with no memory of how she came to be there. Now, in Spring, a young Russian man arrives holding tight a canvas roll, which seems to be a painting. Both outsiders, they form a natural friendship but a group of Wehrmacht soldiers descend and upset the balance across the community.

This is a story of shifting sands, subtle changes that – like a painting – are captured in broad and resonant brushstrokes of nuance. The author teases out the strands of a confused and emotionally emaciated populace and presents a semblance of order to the reader. He fleshes it out with details of the rural environs, the swallows and house martins dipping and swooping, the puffs of flour from bread making caught in sunlight….

The fatigue of combat and apprehension, always ready for a new onslaught, resonates in the world today in many ways. The daily grind of staying positive throughout the Covid 19 pandemic and wondering when and where it will all end….

It is a beautifully produced book, with a simple block print cover and flaps. I enjoyed this quick read, although I felt I was very much on the outside looking in and struggled to feel engaged. At a listed price of £10.00 it might feel a little pricey for some (but you do get a quality product!).

Kleine novelle over de lotgevallen van een Oostenrijks boerengezin en een in hun midden opgenomen 13-jarig meisje. Als een jonge Russische krijgsgevangene bij hun aanklopt, wordt ook hij opgenomen. Als Duitse soldaten de Rus ontdekken, neemt de spanning toe. De grootvader kan dan slechts nog het enige goede besluit nemen.

Schitterend verteld. Hoe je met weinig woorden toch zoveel kan vertellen. En hoe sommige momenten - en de besluiten die door sommige mensen worden genomen het goede kunnen laten voortbestaan.

When I heard about this novel, it didn’t take more than a second to know that I wanted to read the story of a young girl during WWII. The girl is the person guiding us through the story but it’s mainly about a painting that really went missing during the war and where this novella gives a version of what possibly happened.

This short novella covers in merely 112 pages in fact the way of life in Austria for a family of farmers. The characters here fold back on themselves and they very much live in their own microcosmos in the country side. While it might seem at first that the war is not close by for them – you won’t read about invasions, raids, hunger or camps – it is a false feeling, even they can’t escape from danger. Yes the war is almost at its end as the date reads March 14, 1945 in the first chapter but that doesn’t mean that the threat is gone or that they have come out of it unscathed.

Nelli is the anchor point throughout the story but the story’s orbit extends to the farmer and his wife and their 5 children. Nelli – only 13 years old – is the most interesting character for half of the novel though as she’s lost her memory yet the scarring is right under the surface and it shines through intermittently via an astuteness that is quite extraordinary for a 13-year old. She has a special fondness for stories of martyrs for example and has no problem regaling an audience with vivid descriptions of ways to murder somebody.

I was well aware that she had a vivid imagination so it was difficult to know what the truth was. She often tells two versions of events and sometimes I was hoping that the alternate version of events that she proposed right after the one that was first mentioned was actually the one to be true. Who knows though? Did someone walk away or was this person killed after all, we’ll never really know… and exactly that play with the reader’s emotions, kindling that hope that we still carry in ourselves for the most positive outcome, is what made this novel extraordinary.

It did take me a bit of time and some research to find out more about the political situation in Austria at the time and the characters positions. ‘It’s only the Wehrmacht’ introduced me to their new visitors but I would have enjoyed it if the author had described their situation in more detail as it left me confused at first. The author also put a lot of effort into describing the landscape, the sky and air etc. which I could really imagine but not all of his characters came alive as much as Nelli’s surroundings unfortunately.

It was a interesting short story and Nelli allowed me to read a ‘could have happened’ story about a painting that really went missing in 1945. Above all this she made me realise that heroes don’t always get their fame. There were good people who acted and were never named. There are still so many stories untold, people who were brave and never received the recognition they deserved. It’s time to take notice and this novella is a great tribute for any unnamed heroes.

"Schämen Sie sich nicht?" Das ist wohl der Schlüsselsatz dieser Familiengeschichte. In den letzten Tagen des 2. Weltkriegs nimmt eine niederösterreichische Bauernfamilie einen russischen Kriegsgefangenen auf. Die 13-jährige Nelli, die die Familie ebenfalls aufgenommen hat, erzählt von seiner Ankunft, seinem malerischen Talent und seiner Leinwandrolle, die er wie seinen Augapfel hütet. Auf nur 111 Seiten wird mit wenigen Worten viel gesagt. Ein bewegendes Buch.

Op een dag verschijnt een meisje in een dorp, onderkoeld, verweesd en verward, niet in staat ook maar iets te zeggen over wie ze is en waar ze vandaan komt. Tot ze zich de naam van een buurvrouw herinnert en enkele bewoners van het dorp tot de conclusie komen dat ze Cornelia Deinhardt moet zijn, het enige nog levende lid van een gezin dat omkwam toen hun woning gebombardeerd werd. Zelf herinnert ze zich dat niet. Vanaf de boerderij van de familie Leithner, die haar heeft opgenomen, overschouwt ze de dingen. Niet veel later arriveert de volgende onuitgenodigde gast.

Wat Cornelia zo interessant maakt als personage is de verhouding tussen wat ze onthult en wat in het ongewisse blijft, deels omdat het ook voor twijfelachtig is. Haar identiteit heeft ze van anderen gekregen. Ze neemt het van hen aan, maar niet zonder wantrouwen: ‘Ze zeggen dat ik Nelli heet. Soms geloof ik dat, soms ook niet.’ Het verleden is onherroepelijk verdwenen. Cornelia schrijft: ‘Ik geloof dat ik me nooit meer iets zal herinneren. Ik geloof dat in mijn hoofd alles is weggebombardeerd.’ Haar geheugen is aangetast door de oorlog. Hochgatterer toont hoe trauma’s het denken vervormen. Als lezer deel je in haar verwarring. Er zijn dingen die haar verstand te boven gaan, maar er wordt haar tegelijkertijd ook veel toevertrouwd, juist omdat ze een buitenstaander is. Cornelia probeert grip te krijgen op de werkelijkheid door alles wat voor haar van belang is in schriftjes te noteren, die de basis vormen voor de roman. Ze construeert zichzelf al schrijvend: ‘Als iemand me vraagt wie ik ben, zal ik zeggen: Dat staat in mijn schriften.’

Opnieuw prachtig geschreven verhaal door Hochgatterer, over een boerenfamilie in Oostenrijk, die eerst te maken krijgt met een door een bombardement getraumatiseerd meisje uit Duitstalig Roemenië, daarna met een gevluchte Russische krijgsgevangene en tenslotte met een misdadige Duitse luitenant die de Rus wil berechten. De scenes worden kort maar treffend beschreven, bijna emotieloos maar ondertussen juist vol van emoties. Veel blijft suggestief.

Schöne Sätze. Leider habe ich aber keine Ahnung, welche Geschichte sie genau erzählt haben. Ich fand es verwirrend und manchmal schwierig zu verstehen, was passierte.

Als Kompensation dient die Ausgabe, die besonders schön herausgegeben worden ist.

In diesem Buch ist die Geschichte mit kleinen Erzälungen durchsetzt. Meine Kenntnisse der deutschen Sprache hat mir erlaubt, den kleinen Zwischenspielen viel besser zu folgen als die Geschichte, die sie einschließt. Es bleibt jedoch eine gute Erinnerung an dieses kleine Buch, das auf einigen Seiten die Atmosphäre, die am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs atmete, voll ausleben konnte.

In questo libro la storia viene intervallata da piccole storie. La mia conoscenza della lingua tedesca mi ha permesso di seguire molto meglio i piccoli intermezzi rispetto alla storia che li comprende. Resta comunque un buon ricordo di questo piccolo libro che in poche pagine é stato in grado di rendere appieno l'atmosfera che si respirava alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale.

INHALT
Zu viel kann man hier eigentlich nicht schreiben, immerhin hat das Buch nur 111 Seiten.
Erzählt wird die Geschichte von Nelli (eigentlich Cornelia), die einen Kriegsschaden hat, und bei einer Bauernfamilie untergekommen ist. Und dann ist da noch Michail, der Maler, der ebenfalls bei dieser landet.

ALLGEMEINES
Die Kapitel sind in Tage gegliedert, und werden von Nelli in der ersten Person erzählt. Dazwischen sind allerdings immer wieder Kapitel, in denen uns Geschichten erzählt werden, bei denen sie nicht anwesend war, die allerdings in der Handlung erwähnt wurden.
Das Thema Krieg ist zudem sehr präsent, naja, die Geschichte spielt auch 1945.

SCHREIBSTIL & CHARAKTERE
Ich bezweifle nicht, dass Dr. Hochgatterer schreiben kann. Täte ich das, würde ich seine Bücher wohl nicht lesen. Allerdings ist dieses hier schon ein wenig verworren geschrieben, wie ich finde. Während die kleinen Geschichten zwischendrin klar und leicht verständlich sind, muss man sich bei dem Teil aus Nellis Sicht immer wieder konzentrieren, um dem Geschehen zu folgen. Natürlich ist das Absicht, aber trotzdem eben nicht leicht zu lesen. Insgesamt machen die Figuren aber allesamt einen sehr glaubwürdigen Eindruck, auch wenn ich der Meinung bin, dass sich Nelli nicht wie eine 13-jährige verhält. Des weiteren geht mir ihre Fixierung auf ihre Ziehschwester ein wenig auf die Nerven. Manches Mal wusste ich auch nicht, worauf der Autor mit gewissen Inhalten hinaus wollte, und hatte das Gefühl nicht alles was er mir sagen wollte verstanden zu haben.

MEINUNG
Alles in allem hat es sich gut gelesen und war interessant. Zu sagen es hätte Spaß gemacht, wäre bei der Thematik ein wenig unangebracht, aber es hat sofern das in Ordnung ist, gut unterhalten. Ich hatte immer wieder das Gefühl, dass das Buch sehr viel mehr Schichten hat, als einem beim ersten Mal lesen tatsächlich klar werden. Zudem bin ich ein wenig unzufrieden damit, dass am Ende gar so viel angedeutet wurde und ich einfach nicht sicher sein kann, was nun ganz genau passiert ist. Ich denke, dass ich es im nächsten Jahr vielleicht noch einmal lesen werde, und dann langsamer.
Übrigens steht das H auf der Hundemarke des Amerikaners für jüdisch, falls das noch jemand nachsehen musste.
Ein kleiner ökonomischer Kritikpunkt bleibt aber noch. Während des Doktors andere Bücher durchaus auch eine gewisse Länge aufweisen, halte ich den saftigen Preis von 18,50€ (in Österreich) für 111 Seiten dann doch für übertrieben. Natürlich muss auch so ein kleines Buch gebunden und produziert werden, und es soll hier auch nicht dementiert werden, wie viel Arbeit selbst in diesem Büchlein steckt, aber es hätte wohl ein Taschenbuch auch gereicht.

This book is very different to anything I would normally read. I really enjoyed it though.

The story is told from the point of view of Nelli (real name Cornelia), she has suffered damage from the war and is staying at a farm. The book was divided into days but there are also short stories in-between that do no feature Nelli, but they were mentioned in the plot.


I found this a really interesting book with so many layers, although it is very short, being on 111 pages, so much is present. I feel this is a book that you will need to read more than once to fully appreciate. there are so many small details that you won't pick up from just one read through.

Τον Οκτώβριο του 1944, ένα δεκατριάχρονο κορίτσι βρίσκει καταφύγιο και φιλοξενία σε μια φάρμα στην κάτω Αυστρία, θυμάται ελάχιστα για το πώς έφτασε εκεί, και φαίνεται ότι έχει υποστεί τραύματα από τον βομβαρδισμό. Ένα βράδυ, λίγους μήνες αργότερα, εμφανίζεται ένας νεαρός, Ρώσος, λιποτάκτης από καταναγκαστική εργασία στην ανατολή. Ωστόσο η ακμάζουσα φιλία που αναπτύσσεται μεταξύ τους διακόπτεται απότομα από την άφιξη μιας ομάδας στρατιωτών της Βέρμαχτ οι οποίοι καταλαμβάνουν το αγρόκτημα.

Τοποθετημένο στην Κάτω Αυστρία, με τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο να οδεύει προς το τέλος του το «Η μέρα που ο παππούς μου έγινε ήρωας» εντοπίζει την αβεβαιότητα, την ένταση και τον φόβο που γίνεται εμφανείς τις τελευταίες ημέρες του πόλεμου ,και διερευνά με λεπτότητα τι είναι διατεθειμένοι να κάνουν οι άνθρωποι για να επιβιώσουν ,και πως μεμονωμένες πράξεις ηθικής και ανδρείας έχουν τη δύναμη να αλλάξουν έστω και στο ελάχιστο την πορεία της ιστορίας.

Αυτό το μικρό και έντονα ατμοσφαιρικό,μυθιστόρημα του Paulus Hochgatterer είναι σαν ένας πίνακας ζωγραφικης από μόνο του, μια αξιόλογη αφήγηση για μια μικρή αγροτική κοινότητα ανθρώπων που δεν επηρεάζεται άμεσα από τον πόλεμο, αλλά παρόλα αυτά εξαντλείται από αυτόν, που σου μένει αξέχαστο και μπορεί να σου προσφέρει μια διαφορετική εμπειρία ανάγνωσης .

Bei einer Lesung im Stift Göttweig zu „literatur & wein“ saß der Autor mit seiner Frau neben mir, bis er selbst auf die Bühne stieg. Er hatte nicht weit, denn wir saßen in der ersten Reihe. Er las aus seinem neuesten Buch, eben diesem hier.
Es handelt in den letzten Kriegstagen. Die letzten Kriegshandlungen richten noch Schaden an. Die Stahlwerke in Linz werden bombardiert. Ein Mädchen verliert ihre Familie. Als Vollwaise wird sie bei einem Bauern aufgenommen, die sie aber nicht für voll zurechnungsfähig halten. Die vorliegende Geschichte wird von ihr, dem Mädchen Nelli erzählt. Wie weit alles stimmt weiß man nicht. Eine Tochter des Bauern meint, sie hätte einen Dachschaden und von sich selbst sagt sie, dass sie lügt. Ob also alle Geschichten so gut ausgegangen sind, wie hier erzählt bleibt offen. Beim Luftangriff wird auch ein Flugzeug abgeschossen. Ein sowjetischer Flüchtling findet beim Bauern Unterschlupf. Erst als ein Offizier der Wehrmacht mit zwei seiner Soldaten im Bauernhof erscheint wird es für den Fremden brenzlig. Der Leutnant will ihn nach einem Verhör erschießen. Es kommt aber nicht dazu. Letztlich wird er, der Leutnant selbst von einem Mann des Bauern erschossen.

I struggled with this a bit, mostly because I was reading it in short bursts while traveling, and my memory of it is fragmented as a result, but I think the book is legitimately fragmented so maybe that's a correct impression!
It's a really good novel, based on a farm in Germany in 1945. It starts with some descriptions of nature which I enjoyed since I was sitting on a hill at the edge of a wood at the time. But then it becomes more oppressive, with the country obviously collapsing, allied planes dropping bombs nearby and corrupt officials taking advantage of them and threatening both the farmers and the refugees who live with them. And one of the refugees has a painting - a real one that's really missing - so the fate of the picture is described in the denouement of the novella.

The story unfolds more from a series of impressions than plot and, although I found it an easy read, I probably had less idea than Nelli what was going on. There were dead sons and purloined paintings; I assumed the latter stolen from Jewish collections, but I might have been wrong. قصة فتاة تيتمت بسبب الحرب وفقدت ذاكرتها -على حسب قولها- جراء الصدمة ألي حدثت لها بعد قصف منزلها.

قصة الرواية جميلة تتكلم عن اخر فترة في الحرب العالمية الثانية
وحال العامه مع الحرب
لكن شخصيات الرواية مبعثره ..لم أشعر بالارتباط ابدا

مقدمة المترجم كانت رائعه +غلافها خلاب
وهذا ما جعلني اقتنيها من على رف احدى معارض الكتاب.

لكن كانت اقل من المتوقع بنسبه لي..

The characters, the dialogue and the descriptions of the historical background are vivid and interesting.
