Su brillantez intelectual le permite trabar amistad con los hijos de la clase más acomodada de México, pero su origen humilde y su carácter inconformista le apartarán del destino que se abre ante él como dirigente del país. About the author

Hélène Elizabeth Louise Amélie Paula Dolores Poniatowska Amor was born on May 19, 1933, in Paris, France. Her father was French of Polish ancestry and her mother a Mexican who was raised in France. When she was nine Poniatowska's family moved to México City. She grew up speaking French and learned English in a private British school. However, her knowledge of Spanish came from talking with the maids, so her written Spanish was largely colloquial. Poniatowska developed ties with the Mexican lower class in her youth and thus gained a sense of belonging to and an understanding of the Mexican culture. She felt and thought of herself as completely Mexican and of Spanish as her native language. Her works include characters who belong to the underprivileged classes, and she often gave voice to the powerless of her country.

She started writing as a journalist in 1954 and interviewed many famous Mexican and international writers. Many of these interviews can be found in her Palabras Cruzadas (1961; Crossed Words) and later in her Todo México (1990; All of Mexico). Besides her famous interviews, she also wrote several novels, short stories, chronicles, plays, and poems.

Among her novels are Hasta no verte, Jesús mío (1969; Until I see You, My Jesus), which earned her the Mazatlan Prize; Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela (1978; Dear Diego, love Quiela); La "Flor de Lis" (1988; The "Flower of the Lily"); and Tinísima (1992; Tinisima). Other narratives include Lilus Kikus (1954; Lilus Kikus; later an expanded edition appeared as Los cuentos [The Accounts] de Lilus Kikus in 1967); De noche vienes (1979; You Come at Night); Ay vida no me mereces (1985; Life, You Don't Deserve Me); Domingo 7 (1982; Seventh Sunday); Gaby Brimmer (1979; Gaby Brimmer); Todo empezó el domingo (1963; Everything Started on Sunday); and El último guajolote (1982; The Last Turkey).

Her chronicle La noche de Tlatelolco (1971; Massacre in Mexico) earned her the Javier Villarrutia Prize. She refused to accept it because she did not want to identify herself with then-President Echeverría's political establishment. Other chronicles include Fuerte es el silencio (1980; Silence Is Strong), and Nada, nadie: las voces del temblor (1988; Nothing, Nobody: The Voices of the Earthquake).

In theater, her play Melés y Teleo (1956; Melés and Teleo) uses a word game in the title, meaning "you read to me and I read to you." Finally, her poetry can be found in the Spanish publications Rojo de vida y negro de muerte, Estaciones, and Abside.

Ponistowska's skill as a novelist was her ability to combine fact with fiction. She lent her voice to the voiceless, but at the same time she took a step back and let the victims come forward to express their needs and pain, letting the Mexican people speak through her. Her settings were mostly in Mexico, and her characters were either Mexicans or people such as Angelina Beloff (Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela) or Tina Modotti (Tinísima) who lived important passages of their lives in Mexico. Many of her female characters are at the mercy of men. Their lives are ruled by a world made up of double standards. They try to do the right thing, but in the end they lose the men they loved and for whom they sacrificed. It is clear then that these women are never really appreciated.

Poniatowska had a great affinity with women and liked to write about them. But she also was interested in the poor, the weak, the street children, and the powerless. Interviewing the common people of Mexico became her trademark. After her first publication (Lilus Kikus, 1954), her writings became more and more political. For example, in Querido Diego (1978) Quiela's story is completely personal. It focuses upon her and her lover, the famous painter Diego Rivera. By comparison, in Tinísima (1992) Poniatowska reveals not just Modotti's emotional life but also her professional and political life as a communist.

This book is basically “faction.” It’s a fictional biography of a Mexican astronomer (who happens to have a lot in common with the author’s late husband), but it’s also a more-or-less factual story about the development of Mexican astronomy, sometimes in gory academic detail – dates of conferences and attendees, dates of installation of telescopes, who discovered what, when, how many papers were published, and so on. The Mexican astronomer is one of those obsessive intellectuals who work 80 hours a week and ride roughshod over their colleagues and assistants in the service of science.


The author has been called the “Grand Dame” of Mexican literature and is known for her feminist writings. In that context, we see a wide variety of women in the story around the orbit of the main male character: his (unmarried) loving mother who gave him and his siblings their love of nature and the stars; the aunt who becomes a wicked step-mother type after his mother’s death when he was still a child; a loving sister who becomes a prostitute; a women’s-lib gringa that he meets at Harvard; and in his older age, a brilliant, wild but dedicated young woman grad assistant (perhaps the author?). It’s a good story and it held my interest but there is a schizoid element to the book in the novel aspect vs. the factual parts. That “fact” and the “fict” parts of the book are so different that they come across as if written by two different people. (Edited 12/1/2016)

Elena Poniatowska, also known by her family as "la princesse rouge" not only for being a descendant of the last king of Poland Stanislaw August Poniatowski but also for her well known left ideals and speaking up for human right causes, is today one of the best female writers that proudly represent Mexico's literature. She was born in France but fled to Mexico when she was 10 years old along with her mother and a sister who escaped from a Europe being devastated by the second world war. Poniatowska was then raised and influenced greatly by Mexico's cultural diversity, a culture that produced such a deep impact on her. This made her a young avid reader, but she was interested in reading only books that could be useful, books that could help her shape her ideals and her biggest goal became to help her home country and its people through the best weapon of all...words.

A journalist, a novelist, a poet, a social activist, an intellectual. Her work has been dedicated to represent Mexico's culture and people, its government and its politics, its current affairs and speak for those who don't have a voice. Elena Poniatowska represents a voice for humanity, a voice for the oppressed, the poor, the women, a voice against prejudice, corruption and those in power, she represents that voice that demands justice and urges a change in Mexico. One of her best known books is "La noche de Tlatelolco", in which she narrates the 1968 student massacre in Mexico City through testimonies of relatives and witnesses. She has also written biographies, one based on the life of the Nobel laureate Octavio Paz; and has also written many interview narratives of people such as Subcomandante Marcos or Diego Rivera among others important political or historical figures of Mexico.

This time, I decided to submerge myself in "La piel del cielo" or "The skin of the Sky". In this amazing novel, Poniatowska tells us the story of Lorenzo de Tena. The story opens beautifully with a boy asking his mother where does the world ends, to what his mother replies that it doesn't and she will take him further away than what his eyes can simply see and so a journey of science and wonder begins. Lorenzo, the illegitimate son of a wealthy businessman but at same time a distant father, is constantly motivated by a poor but somehow intelligent mother who always takes her time to explain things to this little boy of a curious and brilliant mind, a boy that pursues to answer the many riddles of our universe and our place in it. It is through his mother, that Lorenzo develops a love and such an immense fascination for stars.

After facing many adversities in life and struggling with personal sacrifices, Lorenzo goes to Harvard and becomes quite a successful astronomer, but albeit this professional success he feels empty and out of love. Almost at the end of the novel, an important female character to the story appears: Fausta Rosales. But, can she finally help Lorenzo understand what love really is?

Poniatowska not only succeeds in giving us an extraordinary novel of a boy who faces many challenges and obstacles throughout his life in order to follow his lifelong passion for science but she also manages to describe the scientific details quite impressive. It was also a delight to read so many wonderful historical figures such as the great astronomer E. Halley taking part in the novel as a fictional character, characters with whom you will enjoy many philosophical discussions. It is important to say that the author was actually married to a Mexican astronomer named Guillermo Haro and we can definitely see the big influence of him in the life of Lorenzo, on whom the character was mostly based. The author also projects the difficulties of wanting to do first class research in a country such as Mexico.

"The Skin of the Sky" is quite a captivating story, I really enjoyed Lorenzo's personal conflicts and existential thoughts throughout the novel. It's a novel of struggle and of passion, it offers a philosophical and a political view but most of all Lorenzo de Tena was the life of a boy I found truly inspiring thanks to the exquisite words of this talented and admired writer.

Elena Poniatowska, as Octavio Paz and my favorite Carlos Fuentes offer that window of Mexico's beautiful culture, its history and its reality through the wonderful art of writing. Highly recommended.

Leer a Elena Poniatowska es igual a leer un fragmento de historia mexicana contemporánea: es tener a una abuelita que fue parte del movimiento hippie a sus treinta y tantos, con una chispa que dejaría boquiabierto a más de un imberbe, y con un léxico mitad ortodoxo, mitad lépero.

Leí "La Piel del Cielo" a mitad de la uni, por lo cual las analogías con mi vida y el entonces objeto de mi aprecio eran más que imprescindibles.

Está bueno para leerlo enmedio de una semana lluviosa, de preferencia en el ombligo de México, o ya de perdido, en el ombligo de su hogar...todo sea para alcanzar, aunque un poquito, el cenit que esconde esta obra.

Meksika edebiyatının önemli yazarlarından Elena Poniatowska’nın eseri Gökyüzünün Derisi, idealist bir gökbilimcinin büyük kısmı astronomiye adanan hayatını anlattığı güzel bir roman. Kocası Guillermo Haro’dan esinlendiği düşünülen yazar, gerçek bilim insanlarıyla kurgusal karakterleri, bilim tarihinden olaylarla hayal gücünün ürünlerini bir araya getirip Meksika’nın siyasi ve toplumsal gerçeklikleri ışığında bilimsel mücadelenin yolculuğunu anlatan güzel bir kurgu çıkarmış ortaya. Feminist edebiyatın da güçlü kalemlerinden biri olan yazarın dilimize kazandırılan ilk kitabı bu.

Poniatowska, ünlü gökbilimcinin hayatını anlatmaya çocukluğundan başlıyor; öğrenmeye hevesli ve meraklı bir çocukken bu tutkusunu teşvik eden annesiyle ilişkisi, ardından annesini kaybetmesi üzerine dört kardeşiyle birlikte halası ve babasıyla beraber yaşamaya başlamasını okuyoruz önce. Romanın feminist tonu da hayranlık uyandırıcı; güçlü ve hayatının her alanına hakim kadın karakterleri, ilişkilerden kariyere her alanda eşitlik vurgusu çok hoşuma gitti okurken. Romanla ilgili tek olumsuz eleştirim şu: 1940’lardan başlayıp, internetin bulunduğu 1990’larda bitiyor, haliyle biraz ‘hızlandırılmış’ bir hikaye okuyoruz ancak ben yazarın zamanda sıçramalarını bazen çok ani buldum. Kimi yerde de daha detaylı okumayı arzu ettiğim kısımları es geçip bunun yerine bana göre pek de gerekli olmayan detayları paylaşmayı seçmiş. Ama genel olarak okuduğuma çok memnunum. Kitabın birinci baskısında editoryal sıkıntılar var fakat kapsamlı bir redaksiyondan geçmiş halde yeniden basılacakmış yakın zamanda. Latin Amerika’ya ilgi duyanlara tavsiye ederim.

bir kere meksika’nın kızıl kraliçesi olarak anılan elena poniatowska’yı okuma fırsatını bize verdiği için othello kitap’a teşekkür etmeliyiz. 2.dünya savaşı sırasında kralın soyundan geldiği ülkesi polonya’yı terk ederek meksika’ya göçen elena, hayatı boyunca solda, ezilenin yanında durmuş. durmaya da devam ediyor.
bu roman aslında kocasından esinlenilmiş bir roman. meksikalı bir astronomun harvard’da doktora yaptıktan sonra idealist bir biçimde meksika’ya geri dönüp günde nerdeyse 20 saat çalışarak ülkesini bu alanda ilerletmeye çalışması özet kısaca. ama lorenza de tena’nın hikayesi, annesi, halası, kardeşleri de çok önemli.
goodreads’te bu kitapla ilgili çok güzel bir yorum var: fiction’la faction karışmış diyor. maalesef türkçeye uydurmak çok zor. hakkaten kitap bir masal gibi ilerlerken bazen, tam karakterlere uyum sağlarken hop astronomik veriler önümüze yığılıyor. yani ben amerika’da kim kimle toplantı yapmış, bilmem ne teleskobu ne bulmuş, o yıldızlara ne olmuş, o kadar detaylı öğrenmek istemiyorum. ben lorenzo’nun hayata karşı yumuşayıp yumuşamayacağını, kardeşlerine ne olduğunu öğrenmek istiyorum.

50’lerden 90’lara uzanan bir meksika… dinle uyuşturulmuş halk, saçma sapan projeler ile uğraşan politikacılar, yozlaşma, çürüme, her şey o kadar benzer ki. lorenzo de tena fakirlikten, açlıktan mahvolmuş halka eğitimden önce yemek vermeyi, ellerinde olan toprakları işlemeyi öğretmeyi anlatabilmek için saçını başını yoluyor. ama halk da zaten onu değil rahipleri dinliyor. politikacılar yol yapıyor. ve meksika şu an ne halde, maalesef biliyoruz.
kitabın çevirisi sorunlu, çevirmenin acemice türkçe cümleleri eminim ki editör tarafından düzeltilebilirdi. cümleler atılacak zamirler ve bir kelimesiyle dolu. tırnaklar açılıyor, kapanmıyor. kimin ne dediği bazen anlaşılmıyor. yani evet çaba isteyen bir okuma. künyede adı yazan editör sosyal medyada kendine saçma bir persona yaratmakla meşgul olduğu için sanırım kitapla ilgilenecek vakit bulamamış.

I just couldn't finish this book. I fought with myself trying to do it but it was hopeless, I was done with it by half of the book: Lorenzo is the most irritating character I have ever read, he was misogynist and pretentious.

The only thing I enjoy about this book was the scientifc backround of astronomy and the telescope, but it was written in a really boring way, it just didn't feel like it was worth the time to read.

When Fausta came in I was excited because I thought she would be a good character but it just let me down like any other thing of this book.

Qué bonito es el amor. La piel del cielo es la novela basada en la vida de Guillermo Haro, su esposo y astrónomo mexicano.

Poniatowska introduce a Lorenzo de tena, un hombre increíblemente inteligente destinado a desentrañar los misterios de la astronomía. Inconformista y rebelde, lucha contra las desigualdades sociales, la burocracia y la política para alcanzar su vocación, en un camino lleno de obstáculos que no vienen de parte de la ciencia, sino de la cara oculta de la sociedad. La piel del cielo nos acerca como un telescopio a las estrellas y el amor, construyendo un retrato fascinante de la psique humana.

Comienza siendo una historia aparentemente sencilla de un niño curioso que analiza el mundo con cuidado y termina siendo una poderosa tesis sobre la fuerza del miedo y la soledad. Lorenzo Tena se presenta desde muy pequeño, lleno de preguntas que su madre responde diligentemente. Va avanzando hasta convertirse en un gran científico que encuentra en la astronomía el medio perfecto para no deshacerse nunca del cuestionamiento, pero también para vivir oculto en un mundo ajeno a la realidad.

Mediante este personaje idealista, incorruptible, temeroso, ansioso por saber, la escritora nos muestra cómo la burocracia, la corrupción y la pobreza ideológica mantienen en atraso a América latina frente al mundo, siempre colonizada, fuera del saber, de la tecnología, con personajes (y personas) que se revelan ante las limitaciones de la marginación económica y moral.

Retrata a un hombre solo, inocente, reducido a la nada bajo los escombros de un amor tardío bajo la sombra de la crianza materna. En una gran paradoja, se nos presenta como un hombre realizado profesionalmente, que ha hecho grandes investigaciones sobre las estrellas, pero que es incapaz de sostenerse en el amor, desprotegido como un niño abandonado. La sabiduría de la ciencia se coloca en contraposición a la sabiduría del amor, que nace como esa fuerza indomable que vence a toda razón.

La piel del cielo, más allá de ser la gran cúpula celeste, es la materia cósmica, insondable, incomprensible y tiránica de la que los seres humanos estamos hechos. El libro nos lleva a emprender una búsqueda del universo, de un país propio, de la existencia y de la clave de la vida. Tras la piel del cielo sólo hay una nueva piel del cielo. No deja de multiplicarse. Así como el científico, que siempre tiene una capa nueva. Tantos enigmas como el universo guardamos nosotros, en pequeñas maravillas y miserias. En el caos del universo, subyace un orden en perpetuo movimiento y en equilibrio relativo, que así como los humanos choca, se cruzan, interactúan, oscurecen, se repelen y se atraen.

En definitiva, una novela interesante, con una gran carga psicológica que me ha gustado muchísimo y que les recomiendo con todas las pieles de mi corazón.

If you are looking for a good, long epic tale about a man who discovers himself through astronomy, Mexican politics, family and of course, a good woman, this is your book. It never gets sentimental and the language is lush and moving.

The book starts with young Lorenzo de Tena wondering at the world, "Mama, what is at the end of the world?" Encouraged to explore the world by his mother but through a twist of fate, ends up raised by his playboy father and stiff upper crust aunt. He gets a good education and ends up at Harvard studying astronomy. During the Second World War, Mexico builds an astronomical observation station with the help of America which lures Lorenzo back to home.

Poniatowska raises a variety of polemic themes about Mexico from its own corruption to its competiveness with America. The dichotomy of Mexico reminded me of Carlos Fuentes' work: who is a Mexican? how does the Mexican fit into the world? the struggle of indigenous and city people and how does one succeed in such a harsh world? or enjoy the benefits? I enjoyed her reflective statements such as "the sun lies to us by creating a lush planet, because when one leaves earth, there is nothing but dead space."

The book spans several decades from the 1940's to the 1990's. In short, it covers a life. Lorenzo is presented a a cool, collected man who spends his life building his career in science. Underneath, something is missing. The story is not new, but I enjoyed this particular different angle. An enjoyable read.

No sé si llegó en un mal momento o es que simplemente no es mi estilo de escritora, mi lectura tuvo miles de interrupciones simplemente porque no lograba engancharme y es que los tres primeros capítulos no los sentí tan malos... sin embargo, siento que fue un relato forzado... Con datos históricos metidos a fuerza... decidí terminarlo para poder hacer una crítica y no, no me gustaste Elenita.

Insufrible desde el primer capítulo que describe la vida en el campo profundamente romantizada para continuar con la historia de un protagonista que, aunque la autora quiere pintarlo como un ser complejo y conflictuado, resulta más bien antipático, soberbio, misógino, violento y quejumbroso. Me hizo fantasear con darle una buena patada en los bajos para que se calmara de una vez por todas.

Por lo demás, me parecieron interesantes los datos sobre astronomía que parecían encajados en la historia con calzador. El único momento de placer que me brindó el libro fue cuando el protagonista se queda solo como un perro al final de la novela. Destino bien merecido.

Another criticism to an Alfaguara award? Science + literature.
The Franc-Mexican writer presents us with an interesting journey through the history of Mexico through the review of the life of Lorenzo De Tena, making sharp criticisms of society (machismo, nepotism, corruption and lack of education, among others) from the telescope of the science and astronomy. However, I have two main criticisms, one, that the author denouncing chauvinism, in the story also leaves the female characters forgotten, flat and secondary despite being able to have great relevance for the protagonist; two, which denounces corruption and nepotism, but the character makes his way through his means, but also thanks to his contacts and "levers" (contacts). Against criticism, some examples that best show a story with criticism consistent with the story, is "Five hours with Mario" by Delibes; as history that highlights scientific figures are the works of Dava Sobel; and as a moralizing story to show that you can get ahead in life with work, there is Bjornson's "A Boy of Good temper". There is also "Sinuhé the Egyptian" as a novel that highlights the importance of women for the protagonist.
In general, the story fades and loses strength. But it is interesting to read to assess others of better caliber in their fair measure. I await your comments.

Otra crítica a un premio Alfaguara? Ciencia + literatura.
La escritora mexicana nos presenta un interesante recorrido por la historia de México a través del repaso de la vida de Lorenzo De Tena, realizando críticas agudas a la sociedad (machismo, nepotismo, corrupción y falta de educación, entre otros) desde el telescopio de la ciencia y la astronomía. Sin embargo, tengo dos principales críticas, una, que la autora denunciando el machismo, en la historia también deja los personajes femeninos olvidados, planos y secundarios a pesar de poder tener gran relevancia para el protagonista; dos, que denuncia la corrupción y el nepotismo, pero el personaje se abre camino por sus medios, pero también gracias a sus contactos y "palancas". Frente a las críticas, algunos ejemplos que muestran de mejor manera una historia con críticas consecuentes con el relato, está "Cinco horas con Mario" de Delibes; como historia que destaca figuras científicas están las obras de Dava Sobel; y como historia moralizante para mostrar que se puede avanzar en la vida con trabajo, está "un muchacho de buen temple" de Bjornson. También está "Sinuhé el egipcio" como una novela que destaca la importancia de la mujer para el protagonista.
En general la historia se va desluciendo y perdiendo fuerza. Pero es interesante de leer para valorar en su justa medida otras de mejor calibre. Espero sus comentarios.

Finalmente acabe
Que libro tan terrible, no fue para nada la mejor manera de iniciar mi año.

Es el primer libro que leo de Elena Poniatowska y sospecho que también el último. Su narrativa no es mala, su escritura me pareció amena...pero sus personajes, sus mensajes e ideologías rondaban en lo medieval!

Lorenzo, el protagonista, es detestable. Es un viejo machista, cachito, con complejos de superioridad que cree tener el mundo en sus manos y ser mejor que los demás. Por culpa de Lorenzo estuve a punto de dejar el libro más de una vez. Menciona como las mujeres son unas "perras en celo" condenadas a su "pobre naturaleza femenina"; se me hace irreal que se haya publicado un libro donde sin más se dice "aunque te digan que no al final siempre te van a dar las gracias", TODO está mal en esa frase y en un libro que expone esos pensamientos como típicos mexicanos, entiendo que la historia se desarrolla en una década con pensamientos diferentes, pero para mi eso no justifica la falta de respeto a las mujeres a lo largo de libro.

Si me enojó mucho el libro, tenía que desahogarme.

Disfruto mucho encontrarme con los personajes de Poniatowska, me encanta como logra a través de sus historias regalarnos momentos de un México que no es tan lejano al de hoy, pero que fue y sólo revive cuando se le solicita. Vaya que agradezco que ella sí lo ha hecho porque de esta menera he podido andar entre sus calles, conocer a sus personajes y presenciar las revueltas ideologicas (siempre están empapadas sus páginas de dosis de política). En esta ocasión nos presenta Lorenzo, otro loco empedernido por lograr ejercer su vocación, trás ello todos los líos y obstáculos que conlleva, porque hoy y siempre en México se es dificil abrirse camino; la fuga de cerebros, la falta de inversión en educación... estos y otros temas vienen involucrados en el libro. Pero claro también nos habla del cielo, de su lejanía, su belleza y su inmensidad, y por supuesto y menos importante también nos habla del amor, para concluir digamos que no hay mucha diferencia entre uno y otro, ¡vaya que a Lorenzo le queda bastante claro!

This was a weirdly unbalanced book: parts of it soar into the five star range, while others, especially the ending, which solidified my chosen rating, sag around the two. Something involving hamartias and tragic plot structures could be made out of that, but it doesn't feel as conscientiously taut as the best tales of hubris do, which may be an unfair call but is honestly all that I have at my disposal. There are enough references packed into these pages to make for a solid collection of footnotes and/or endnotes, but I'm doubtful if the effort for rendering an edition of such will happen during my lifetime for a text translated into English, written by a Latinx woman, and published in the 2000s. All in all, it's a shame that this book didn't manage to hold itself together, as there aren't many pseudo-bios about scientists out there especially about those as sociopolitically conscientious (in an admittedly limited sense) as Lorenzo de Tena, pseudonym for an actual historical figure close to the author. There was great potential to be had, but it all devolved into a morass of gendered nonsense and soap opera stifling in the end, and if all that was intended to render Tena into a less than sympathetic character, that could've been achieved without sacrificing the narrative in the process.

The writing of this is historical fiction au naturale: where others flip open history books and copy/paste, Poniatowska draws inspiration from the kitchen, the backyard, deep on an inherent pool of knowledge that demonstrates the wealth a cultural insider has access to without resorting to formulaic world building or dissonant character development. That's why it's such a shame that the book didn't turn out too well, especially since maintaining this sort of immersive experience is a tricky business indeed. This is no Memoirs of Hadrian, Place of Greater Safety, or Autumn of the Patriarch, but it could have been a slice of 20th century from plantation mistresses to South African observatories with delvings into communism, postcolonialism, astronomy, physics, philosophy, sex, queerness, and a bevy of other scenes and sensations teeming amongst the still persistently undervalued landscapes of greater Mexico. I've recently seen Poniatowska's name elsewhere, but I don't think I'll be picking anything else up of hers unless especially motivated. I understand the need to get into a character's head, but the last few pages of this were more out of character odious than anything else, and it really didn't finalize the closing of what had otherwise been an impressive, even monumental life.

I like giving women in translation a chance every once in a while, and in light of my reception here, I'm glad Poniatowska's doing fine in her home country, as I'll be spending my reading time elsewhere. She has a pseudo-bio of Leonora Carrington out that intrigues, but I really do need to read some actual Carrington first before I start chasing any non-self-imposed mythos relating to her as subject. In the end, it's interesting to read Mexican lit that, however auspiciously structured and richly littered with historical/scientific references, still comes off as far more casual than my usual fare that hails from that particular country, or even its particular continent. I didn't like it as much as I hoped to, but it goes to show how much in translation risks going unread due to various assumptions, consciously contrived or otherwise. I wouldn't especially recommend this to anyone unless someone was really ken on some of the names references, as while I definitely learned a lot, the whole point of this work existing didn't quite establish itself, especially during the last flurry of ridiculous pages. Ah well. On to the next.

Con todo, su misma salida, si no la imaginase en espíritu, como ahora cuando lo estoy diciendo, no podría predecirla. Mas ni esa aurora que en el cielo veo es la salida del Sol, aunque lo preceda, ni tampoco lo es esa imaginación que tengo en mi espíritu. The Skin of the Sky, is, in my opinion, weakened by its singular focus on Lorenzo de Tena, a relentless workaholic and essentially self-educated astronomer who proves to be an all around difficult man to be around. Over the course of the novel, many intriguing characters are introduced (along with much fascinating information about astronomy and Mexican education, history, science, politics and gender relations) but all is subsumed by the monomaniacal de Tena, a brilliant scientist but also a damaged (and damaging) human being. Multiple points of view might have allowed more insight into his character and made him both more interesting and more sympathetic. That said, the novel is more a depiction of Mexico, struggling to integrate a luminous pre-colonial past into a not at all certain post-colonial future, than it is the story of one man.

Este fue un libro increíble que disfruté hasta la última página. Elena Poniatowska escribe una novela que atrapa al lector con su narrativa. Lorenzo, es uno de los protagonistas de esta historia. Él es testigo de varios episodios interesantes que pasaron durante su vida en México. Me encantaron las conversaciones que el llegó a tener con sus amigos y compañeros laborales ya que la perspectiva de Lorenzo es muy honesta, y no tiene miedo de externar su opinión. Me gusto que la autora mencionara importantes figuras históricas como a Benito Juárez. Es sin duda una novela que logró describir acertadamente la visión de un hombre culto, que buscaba hacer lo correcto. Es el primer libro que leo de Elena Poniatowska, y claro, no será el último.

Quiero hacer un análisis exhaustivo de este libro y tiene tantos temas qué tocar, que creo que separaré la reseña en subtítulos y subtemas, para poder apreciar verdaderamente el trabajo que nos ha dejado Elena Poniatowska y que ganó el Premio Alfaguara de novela 2001 (no me extraña, con semetante libro). Así que entonces, vamos, como dijo Jack el destripador, por partes. Recuerden que si hay spoilers estarán debidamente marcados con sus letreros rojos y gifs y que no me hago responsable de nada que pase si yo ya avisé, eh. Pero no creo que sea necesario, salvo por un detalle que me resguardaré para el final. Entonces, ¿qué no puedo decir de este libro?

Bueno, empecemos por la persona que inspiró este libro.

El verdadero Lorenzo de Tena: Guillermo Haro

Sí, existió. Y aunque no puedo asegurar que todo lo que le pasa por la cabeza a Lorenzo en el libro le pasó a Guillermo Haro, este astrónomo mexicano fue la inspiración de Elena Poniatowska para escribir este libro. Creció durante la época de la Revolución mexicana. Estudió filosofía en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) y no derecho, como Lorenzo de Tena en la Libre de Derecho. Se empezó a interesar en la astronomía (y en el libro, se interesa precisamente, gracias a Luis Enrique Erro, uno de los más grandes astrónomos mexicanos) y a causa de su dedicación y entusiasmo acabó siendo contratado en 1943 como asistente del recién fundado Observatorio Astrofísico de Tonantzintla. También estuvo, como Lorenzo, en Harvad para luego volver a México y continuar trabajando en el Observatorio Astrofísico de Tonantzintla. No tengo más detalles de su vida, salvo una lista de proyectos en los que participó, el hecho de que fue uno de los investigadores más jóvenes en el Colegio Nacional, que ganó inumerables premios por sus aportes a la ciencia y que, por supuesto, en 1968, el año de la matanza de estudiantes, se casó con Elenita.

Sí, la trayectoria de Lorenzo de Tena, por sorprendente que pueda parecer, está inspirada en el marido de Elena Poniatowska, con quien tuvo dos hijos. Él le sacaba a ella casi veinte años y cuando uno lee el libro, se pregunta, ¿qué tanto de ese hombre, Lorenzo de Tena, que no quería casarse, ni tener hijos, ni sabía tratar a una mujer, ni toleraba que una mujer lo confrontara hasta que Fausta llegó a su vida en Guillermo Haro? La misma aurota dice que no mucho. Les cito una entrevista que dio para la revista La insignia:

―Si la novela habla de un astrónomo, como se ha comenzado a saber, ¿se permitió incluir elementos autobiográficos?
―No, aunque ciertamente estuve casada con Guillermo Haro. Hay un astrónomo, Lorenzo de Tena, cuya historia empieza en los años veinte y a quien nadie pela. Tiene una fuerte lucha contra su medio social. A su lado aparecerá un personaje femenino que lo contrapuntea, de nombre Fausta Rosales y de la que se enamorará al paso del tiempo.
»En cuanto a las referencias a Guillermo no creo que existan, si bien la trama está situada en Tonantzintla y en la ciudad de México.

Pues ahí lo tienen. No mucho. Y me alegro un poco, porque como vamos a ver un poco más adelante, Lorenzo de Tema es todo un personaje. Bueno, este fue un pequeño paréntesis cultural, ahora sí vamos con el libro.

El racismo y clasismo mexicano en la familia De Tena

Un tal Joaquín de Tena conoció a una tal Florencia y tuvieron hijos, pero nunca se casó con ella porque nunca estaría bien visto que alguien de su círculo se casara con una índigena. ¡¿Cómo?! Si él era de una familia de buen nombre, rica, de esas que hablaba francés en la mesa por aquello de las buenas costumbres. Al principio, los niños viven ajenos a toda esa locura y sólo presencian las visistas de su papá. Lorenzo no se entusiasma mucho con esas visitas, pero el menor, Santiago, lo adora. Entonces, cuando los De Tena acaban por vivir con la familia paterna, se encuentran con un mundo completamente diferente al que están acostumbrados. No es tan simple como el que su madre, Florencia, les había construido.

Los De Tena hablan francés en la mesa y se deshacen en atenciones ante los extranjeros, aunque a los nacionales los denigran. No son ricos en realidad, pero hacen todo lo posible por esconderlo en una sociedad en lo que lo único que importa es la clase social y no ser indígena. Así es como los niños acaban educándose con los maristas, en un mundo lleno de discriminación y desigualdad social al que acaban por acostumbrarse o rebelarse, no hay de otra. No es el único libro que trata el tema, pero Elena lo hace muy bien, sobre todo cuando Lorenzo acaba por rebelarse porque odia las injusticias contra los pobres y se aleja de sus amigos, que cada día lo entienden un poco menos. Todo eso, por supuesto, muy bien retratado en todo el libro que escribió Poniatowska, pero, sin duda, donde más resplandece es al principio, cuando los niños chocan con el mundo de los De Tena, que no se parece en nada al que les había construido Florencia, su madre.

El nacionalismo en un país donde nadie quería invertir en ciencia

Lorenzo de Tena dejó la Escuela Libre de Derecho y no se convirtió de entrada en Astrónomo, sino que apoyo a Bassols a ayudar a las comunidades indígenas a tener una mejor vida. Repartió periódicos socialistas y se dio cuenta de que ni eso les interesaba porque no podían leer, se quejó de la falta de educación del país y en el idilio en el que vivían los comunistas y los socialistas que creían que imprimiendo periódicos mejoraría todo. Se peleó con sus amigos que, después de ser juaristas, acabaron por contentarse con el gobierno, abarcando todo lo que podían. Y finalmente, deseoso de hacer algo por México, un país donde los políticos oían la palabra ciencia y temblaban de miedo, se puso a trabajar en el Observatorio. Nadie quería invertir en ella porque alegaban que no había dinero (¿cómo robar menos?) o bajo la excusa de para qué invertir, si el vecino del norte (Estados Unidos) les llevaba años luz de ventaja.

Yo tengo muchos dilemas con ese asunto, porque nunca he pretendido quedarme en México, aunque lo amo. Quiero estudiar en Argentina y en Inglaterra, quiero hacer algo bueno por el mundo y todas esas cosas, pero nunca he sentido ese Nacionalismo como Lorenzo de Tena que se fue a Harvard a estudiar y, aunque la universidad de Boston lo maravilló, volvió a México sin Doctorarse. cuando lo llamó Luis Enrique Erro (un astrónomo brillante y hay un planetario en mi Universidad que lleva su nombre) lo llamó a trabajar en el observatorio.

Es una de las pocas (chance y la única) cualidad que le admiro a Lorenzo de Tena. Podría decir que admiro su trabajo y su tenacidad, pero a la vez me da pena, porque usa el trabajo para aislarse de los seres humanos, a los que ni entiende, ni le interesa entender. Pero ese es tema de otro apartado, así que aquí sólo diré que admiro a Tena por querer hacer algo por bueno por su país y nada más. Por casi todo lo demás lo que quiero es aventarle una silla en la cara,

El macho mexicano y su hábitat natural

Lorenzo de Tena dice que no entiende a las mujeres y que sólo se casará el día que encuentre una mujer que lo deje trabajar. ¿Entendieron? Que-lo-deje-trabajar. Casi todas las mujeres o lo ignoran o lo ponen en su lugar, porque lo que el niño quiere no es una esposa o una mujer o nada, lo que quiere es una lámpara, y ya si necesita usar el pito, igual y una muñeca inflable. A la única mujer que parece querer es a su madre, Florencia, y miren que se enfurece cuando ella se empequeñece frente a su papá (y en vez de culparlo a él y ser un cabrón que reniega de ella, la culpa a ella, por el poder del espíritu santo). Aun así, Lorenzo de Tena busca a las mujeres. ¿Increíble, no? Supongo que todos tienen instintos naturales.

Es un macho mexicano en su habitat natural, como lo han sido cientos antes de él y cientos después, es el perfecto retrato y, gracias a dios, en las mujeres recibe sólo lo que merece. Ni las entiende, ni le interesa. Al final cree que hay que protegerlas porque el mundo no está hecho para mujeres y, muy satisfecho consigo mismo porque se cree persona decente, dice que las mujeres son sólo bolsas para hijos no deseados. Hay que protegerlas, dice, pero nunca dice que hay que cambiar el mundo, que el que está mal es él, que los cabrones que abandonan a las mujeres con el hijo en el vientre son cabrones. Y todas las mujeres lo ponen en su lugar. Lisa lo regaña, lo rechaza, no sé va con él; Fausta le dice que lleva siglos de atraso en su pensamiento social; su hermana Leticia le da el avión igual que tiene hijos y en realidad Lenchito se auto sabotea todas las relaciones por pinche misógino de mierda. ¿Y saben qué? En un mundo donde eso no es lo común, me encanta que a Lencho le pase. Se gana lo que se merece.

En fin, Lorenzo de Tena es el perfecto izquierdista y machista al que le da repelús la idea de una novia feminista y, es más, lo único que quiere es una mujer que lo deje trabajar. Y por pendejo, siembra lo que cosecha: pura mierda de relaciones. Y abrazaría a Elenita por ello.

Esta es la historia de Lorenzo y de su relación con las estrellas. Y con maravilloso pluma Elena nos habla de don Goyo, de la Izta, de constelaciones, de observatorios, de ciencia, de Harvard, de científicos, la pobreza, la desigualdad, del Poli, de la UNAM, de la corrupción, de viajes por el mundo, del desamor, de Pintores, artistas, bioenergía, matemáticas, yoga, sueños. Me dejó desconcertada el final, pero creo que fue el mejor.

Primera novela que leo de Poniatowska, me quedo con ganas de seguir leyéndola. Lorenzo De Tena es su personaje central dentro del relato, hombre que viene de la pobreza y que a base de esfuerzos logra ser uno de los astrónomos más importantes en México. Sin duda leer a Elena es esperar una prosa descriptiva y sobretodo crítica.
