"Now that there’s a new Bowery Poetry Club and new Bowery Poetry imprint at The Operating System, we better have some new poems. And poems just don’t get newer, fresher, or more timely than Patrick Roche’s simple explosions. 'An Exercise in Necromancy' is the New Confessional – direct, unflinching, pure. Ah yes. 'Watch me fight and watch me fight and watch me fight and watch me fight/And watch me kiss this city back so hard it never stops shining.' " - Bob Holman
The Operating System is pleased to announce the new Bowery Poetry imprint, in collaboration with Bowery Arts + Science, in its first 'An Exercise in Necromancy', by Patrick Roche.
Bowery Poetry’s Chapbook Slam is an annual competition where poets face off at Bowery Slam for a chance to have their work published. Patrick Roche is the Chapbook Slam’s first winner.
I loved this. Raw and dark and oh so beautifully written. Highly recommend.
Favourite poems: Hocus Pocus, Alchemy
Some sentences that stuck with me: "Watch me swallow fire and swords, and nothing else" "I will not make this the sad poem where (...) my shadow becomes a more central character than me" "My mother assumes she will be buried before me"
It was the first poetry bundle I ever read. I really enjoyed it, especially the poems ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Retcon’. Patrick Roche is so courageous he lets his readers have a look in his mind in such an artistic way. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone (even if you’re not very experienced with poetry, because the poems aren’t that hard to understand). Ps. Some of his poems are on youtube so that’ll give you an idea of this bundle.
This collection was beautiful and honest and just raw Patrick. These poems covered everything he has struggled with and continues to struggle with. From depression to his father’s death to his eating habits to his own sexuality, Patrick spared nothing.
