My Kindle effectively allowed me to buy this book bundle on the sly, as I would never have had the courage to go into a physical bookshop and ask for something entitled ‘A Sexy Bundle’. I debated whether or not to even add it to my Goodreads profile, as I was concerned about what my ‘friends’ would think about my reading choices … or what it might hint at about my sexual-position preferences.

But reading this was such a fun, informative, and inspiring experience, I knew in the end I just had to share this with as many people as I could. If you consider that ‘The Joy of Gay Sex’ by Felice Picano et al was published originally in 1997, with nothing quite like it ever since, apart from a few imitators, Woody Miller fills a sizable gap in this particular market.

(And yes, there seems no way to avoid innuendos or bad puns in my review). So if you are curious, stuck in a rut, or in a committed relationship, grab hold of Woody Miller’s (sexy) book bundle. He’ll give you a run for your money, I promise.

Reading this (sexy) book bundle reminded me of an article in the November 2017 edition of South African gay monthly gay newspaper Exit. Entitled ‘The Social Dynamics of Penetration’, author Jarred Thompson writes:

As gay men we’re accustomed to being asked the proverbial ‘top or bottom’ question, staking our bets that we’ll fall into the right category for our potential mates. Yet, do we ever reflect on what the implications for such a sexual separation are and what social expectations are attached to the labels top and bottom?

Thompson argues further that this automatic classification is not only damaging to the gay community itself, but inhibits our own sexuality:

People exist on a level of sexual experience and how they act in specific sexual situations is always contextual. If we can accept this, then maybe using labels such as ‘top’ or ‘bottom’ could become redundant and we could liberate ourselves from a masculine world that seeks to fix individuals into stable identities. In the end, who we attracted to and why we are attracted to them should transcend traditional labels of ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ along with the stereotypical traits that seem to be associated with those sexual positions.

Reading Woody Miller’s three, er, seminal gay-sex advice books in succession has the remarkable effect of opening up the full spectrum of gay sexual possibilities. Combining practical advice, psychology, tips and demonstrations, anatomical and technical discussions, anecdotes, advice and a great sense of humour, the self-proclaimed ‘Gay Sex Guru’ promises that everyone stands to learn something from his writing.

And if that one thing is only that we are not nearly as ‘liberated’ or as ‘alternative’ a community as we like to think we are, especially when it comes to matters of the bedroom, then Woody has perhaps, indeed, helped to kindle the sparks of the next Gay Sexual Revolution (which writer Samuel R. Delany has always said will make the 1970s look like a Sunday School picnic).

P.S. I would have given this five stars, except for the fact that there is quite a bit of repetition between the three books. It would have helped if Woody had had a hard-line editor, with a big pencil, who could have red-lined all the repetitive sections to create a text as seamless as a cute bottom.
