Maggie and Keith Hunter, along with their two children Brice (9), Toni (14), Toni's best friend, Lisa, Maggie's recently widowed mother, Vivian and the family dog, Commander have decided to take a family vacation to a remote lakeside cottage. Maggie wanted privacy, in order for them all to spend quality time together, and to work on her marital issues - but when she sees just how remote the location really is, she can't help but be apprehensive.
The first night, Maggie hears a strange and unidentifiable sound outside, and then sees a huge, dark object circling the top of the cottage. But her husband impatiently pulls her back to bed and eventually the noise stops.
In the morning when she goes outside, Maggie sees a huge, cylindrical object halfway between the cottage and the forest. No one can tell what it is, what it's for, where it came from, etc. A door slides open as the family studies the craft, and they hastily retreat inside. Keith tries the phones, only to find they're down. He then orders everyone into the car with the intention of getting away as quickly as possible - but he drives straight into an invisible force field.
It is obvious something is in that craft, biding their time, just watching the family. At night, small creatures with bat-like wings, tipped with long, sharp claws fly from the strange aircraft. The creatures are perplexed with human emotions and actions; they have come from far away to study the inner workings of the human's minds. And their organs.

There was almost no character development at all, so I didn't feel a particular affinity with anyone, besides maybe the dog 🐕 and the family was trapped for days, maybe even weeks and not ONCE did they ever sit down and talk/strategize about what they were going to do/how they were going to try to get out of the situation, like just nothing at all. I found that super annoying, but even though it had it's flaws, I really loved this book for some reason. I flew right through it, and I thought it was really different and fun. I definitely cannot wait to check out more books by this author, now that I know I really like his style.

3.50 rounded up.

If you’re looking for an easy read that has ufos and aliens (not quite grays) this is your book. Not very scary, but entertaining enough.

Thats not a spoiler. You find this out in the first few chapters.

Wouldn’t mind seeing this in movie form. I personally love alien movies. Not so much invasion style more of aliens messing with people in their homes is what I like.

This book was a fun read. It was total brain candy. I loved what happened to the shitbag husband. If you're looking for something serious, this is not it! If you're looking for total ridiculousness, aliens and drama then this is right up your alley.

I am writing this review many years after reading this book because after 30 years, it has stuck with me. The setting, (isolated cabin in the woods), the aliens, the dog, and what a jerk the husband was and what happened to him, to be specific. Sadly, I donated my copy to a local charity many years ago, and now of course I wish I hadn't.
