JM Buckler has been featured in top media including ABC, NBC, and Fox. She is the award-winning author of Seeker of Time, Stillness of Time, and Passage of Time, young adult fantasy-fiction books which have received praise from the likes of Kirkus Reviews and which have been best-selling young adult books on Amazon. Game-changers in the young adult marketplace, Buckler’s novels combine electric storytelling with deep spiritual lessons and meaningful takeaway on how to cope with life’s hardships – addressing everything from betrayal and heartbreak, to violence and death.

Buckler offers writing-based programs to diverse audiences – teaching how to use the power of the pen to reshape and reclaim one’s life, as Buckler did when she began her own writing journey: After years of drifting through life, feeling insecure and lacking a sense of meaning or purpose – always trying to be the image and fill role that others held out for her – Buckler took a leap of faith and walked out on the person she was supposed to be, instead diving into the world of her imaginary characters. Through developing their lives, Buckler discovered that she cultivated her own – ultimately finding her calling and passion, transforming her reality, and emerging a grounded and confident young woman.

Buckler lives in Austin, TX, with her husband, six-year-old son, and Havanese dog. She can be found at JMBuckler.com.

VIDEO REVIEW: https://youtu.be/hLpI6Bm-OjM
Authors behaviors on Instagram have no bearing on my review. This was just an exceptionally terrible read. I have a full video review linked above where I talk about it in depth but I’ll leave you with this for now:
-there is, I kid you not, no plot in this book. It is one long, drawn out, unnecessary prologue.
-if you don’t love pop culture references in your books, run away from this.
-A Spanish teacher is repeatedly villainized for absolutely no plot-relative reason and it was really uncomfortable.
-remember the mortal instruments unnecessary incest plot line? This skirts that line, and for no reason whatsoever. Platonic relationships can’t exist I guess.
-the phrase “I vibrated my lips together” is used eight times in this book, as is “piercing blue eyes”
And the most annoying thing:
-quotations are used incessantly for inner monologue. And the inner monologue happens in the middle of conversations. So you are interrupted by the character speaking to herself.

It’s free to read if you have Amazon prime but even so, it was so bad that a part of me wants to somehow request a refund.

DNF. The world building was awful, the dialogue was cringey and the characters were flat and underdeveloped. I’ve shouldered through several books in the past just to finish them and get them over with but I couldn’t even complete this one.

I feel sorry for the paper that had to suffer in order for this book to be printed. I feel sorry for the ink too. Not only is this author extremely problematic, her writing is like a five year old that’s trying to be serious.

if jm buckler spent all the time she spends attacking other authors on editing her book then maybe she’d be a better writer

Imagine comparing yourself to Martin Luther King Jr and Jesus and then writing a subpar book with awful dialogue, very little character development, cliche relationships and a plot that doesn't actually pick up until half way through the book? Yikes. Don't waste your time or your money on this one, even if the author wasn't racist, the series is still absolutely horrendous.

*Update: I no longer like her Instagram. But I reviewed this before she doubled down on her bad takes, so this has nothing to do with her as a person.*

2/10

Firstly, nothing against the author. I liked her Instagram and was able to download this for free with prime. I wanted to know what kind of writer she was.

Overall.
She’s okay at descriptions, but needs a lot of work with technique, plot structure, and character building. I hope this improves going forward in her series, but I won’t be reading from her for a good while.

Plot
There is none. This book does not give you a plot point until around 50%. Until then, we are wading through everyday life with the occasional popup of a mysterious stranger. Then, even once we get a plot point, nothing is done about it. There’s no climax, no resolution. Just a lot of info dumping (and I read epic fantasy, but this was a lot for even me) and dragging prose.

Prose.
It wasn’t bad necessarily but it wasn’t varied or interesting. There was a lot of redundancy, overexplanation, and awkward phrasing. But the dialogue on the other hand was, well, cringey. It needs serious work.

Characters
The characters felt very... blah. Jax was the best of the three main ones. Cyrus was sorta real. Elara was not real at all. And all three of them resolved any kind of emotional conflict either in a paragraph or off page. Even romance!

Sigh. I wanted to like this, but I just didn’t. It’s a 2/10 instead of a 1/10 for a cool premise only. I really like the Solin-Lunin power thing.

This author really read The Hunger Games, Divergent, the series in the Grishaverse and the Harry Potter series and still thinks somehow that reading isn't a political thing. Her reading comprehension sucks and so does her writing.

I DNF’d this absolute pile of garbage about 20% in, which is rare for me. Poor writing. Also later come to find that the author is racist, homophobic, and transphobic? No wonder I didn’t like her stale, crusty book.

I am pretty disappointed because I've been on an indie author kick lately and have discovered some really great reads but this isn't it. At all.

Where is the plot? I spent 100% of the book looking for it but I could not figure it out.

What is the dialogue? Cringy.

And why all the pop culture references? It takes the reader completely out of the book.

Overall, not a great read and will not be reading more by this author.

JM Buckler Seeker of Time Review

I've heard of JM's behavior on instagram early 2021 and thought it was problematic but I had the privilege of tuning her out mostly because I wasn't on social media a lot. It was pretty quiet after she left instagram and when she returned in August 2021, she came back with a vengeance! And I couldn't stand what she's been spewing on instagram anymore, so I took Reads With Rachel's advice and read her book. I definitely came into this book pretty biased. I knew it was going to be bad but I was also willing to spend my time and really read it because I wanted to get into JM's head to see where she's coming from. I genuinely believe books can really tell you who authors are. Also JM is clearly looking for attention on Instagram so I am going to give her the attention she wants so badly by reviewing her book. JM was so angry that after the first time on instagram that people were mass one-starring her books for no reason other than her politics and whatever. Well I am reviewing this book based on the book itself and it has nothing to do with her political views.

JM Buckler's book "Seeker of Time" will have the pleasure of being the first book I've ever reviewed on my goodreads. I don't leave a review of any books so JM should feel honored. I promise that I read the book and this is my honest opinion and review despite coming in biased.

I think the first thing I should talk about is the dialogue. The dialogue is pretty cringey. It doesn't feel natural. It feels forced and it feels like JM is trying to sound smart at the same time trying to sound like an 18 year old girl but failing horribly. I've read plenty of contemporary/fantasy young adult books by authors like Penelope Douglas, Maggie Stiefvater. While those authors can have cheesy dialogues sometimes, usually I can look past them because the story is still fun and believable. Everything about this book feels unnatural and forced. The way the book is written also feels like a college essay. Everything is very clinical, it doesn’t flow and the characters just sound like robots reading a script.

The most annoying thing about the dialogue and the way they're written is that JM puts quotation marks around our main character's Elara thoughts/inner monologue. Her thoughts. Not just what she says but her thoughts also. So the way it's written it reads like Elara is thinking out loud or talking to herself. But she is not! She's actually thinking in her head but for some reason there are quotation marks around her thoughts. And this interrupts the dialogue mid-conversation and it feels very clunky and jarring.

20% into the book, nothing has happened. Literally nothing. All we really know is that Elara is being "stalked" by someone with "piercing blue eyes" and she's physically attracted to Cyrus, the popular boy in her new school. Nothing has developed in the plot yet. So far it honestly feels like a college student trying to fill up the word count requirement.

50% into the book. This is one giant "no showing, just telling" kind of book. In most fantasy novels, authors are encouraged to build the world through "showing". So describing the world through characters interaction either with other people or things. But Seeker of Time, there is a lot of talking. Now I love good dialogue among characters but it's very excessive in this book. I should not be getting information about a new world or plot through a character explaining things to other characters. That's boring and repetitive and it makes the interactions among the characters awkward.

70% into the book. All of it feels like an info dump. Despite all the characters talking about this new world and trying to set up a plot, the world building is lacking. All the characters feel bland and uninteresting. I know that this is the first book in a series but the first book should not read like chapter 1 of a book.

100% into the book, finished, wow this book is literally just a set up for the sequels. Nothing happened in this book. Literally nothing!! This book could’ve been condensed into maybe 10 chapters as the introduction for the plot to come which I assume is happening in book 2 and 3. Without reading book 2 and 3, I’m guessing they are going to be the same way; condensed down to 10 chapters each and all three books can actually be one book. There are so many useless things that happened in this book that I felt was not needed. For example, why did we go on a NASA field trip? Why did we have to have weird interactions with the Spanish teacher? Those things are not relevant to the plot (if there was one).

Let’s give a quick summary of the three main characters.

Elara is the “not like other girls” girl. Immediately I just knew JM wanted Elara to have Bella Swan from Twilight and Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries vibes. She has no healthy relationships with other women, even her own mother. Every woman that interacts with Jax or Cyrus is immediately on her hitlist.

Cyrus is honestly so boring and plain that there isn’t even anything worth saying about him. He is literally just there.

Jax is the worst of them all. He is used as a google or a walking encyclopedia just spewing off facts, just for Elara to learn about this new planet, her powers and all the info about the villain. He literally has no personality and every time he talks he sounds like a robot, just reciting info. Now you can attribute this to his trauma and his awful past or whatever excuse, but just because he has an awful past doesn’t mean he should lack personality and feel like a robot. He is so boring and I’m supposed to convince that he has a connection with Elara but there is no chemistry between them.

Not surprising at all that I am giving this book 1 star. I will say there is some potential to this book. I actually like the set up for this new planet and new lore for the planet with the “Solin” and “Lunin” stuff and their characterizations, which is actually interesting and could go somewhere. Too bad this book was written by JM Buckler who is too incompetent and uninspired to fully flesh out a decent book. In the hands of a better author, this book would’ve been much better. JM clearly had a series in mind when she wrote this and this first book sacrificed a lot of story and plot to serve as an introduction to the sequels. This book should’ve worked as a stand-alone but it didn’t. There is no narrative, no plot, the whole thing just fell flat.

Advice for JM:
1. Take some writing classes. I believe she teaches some writing classes. Yeah no she needs to stop those and start taking some classes herself.
2. Hire a new editor. Heck maybe hire an editor if she didn’t have one before. Because clearly she needs one.
3. How about just stop writing altogether? Because the writing industry and book community does not need more authors like her who are writing bland and boring books when there are plenty of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ authors who are doing it much better than her.
4. Now this is my personal beef with her but please keep Taylor Swift out of your mouth and instagram. Taylor Swift who supports the LGBTQIA+ community would be ashamed of this woman and she would be disgusted with what the woman is spouting on her instagram. Ew.

Advice for any readers reading this:
Read any other book. I highly recommend Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. Warcross by Marie Lu. In Deeper Waters by FT Lukens. In The Ravenous Dark by AM Strickland. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha. Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas.

Sigh…. I should have run the moment Elara says “I didn’t fit the mold” like it hasn’t been done a million times. Then she goes on to imply she’s “undesirable” even though she fits the fashion industry’s standard of beauty, and whines about herself even though she had a perfect opportunity to reinvent herself but instead continued to present herself as dumpy. Oh, and lets not forget the glowing precious gemstone-like eyes that every miserable teenage protagonist possesses in this kind of story, because obviously that’s the only trait otherworldly characters ever present with until they’re revealed to be Krypton ripoffs.

So obviously characterization is the prominent problem with this story, and it sadly doesn’t end at Elara. The teachers are hateful, cringey AH’s that are completely unrealistic, her peers are just a bad 90s after-school special, other adults talk like white collars straight out of mid-1900s scifi, functional characters like Cyrus, Jax, and her parents are cardboard cutouts. There’s nothing that makes anybody engaging, and that weakness bleeds into the dialogue throughout the book. And of course Zennith… a villain so run of the mill that only the laughable finger pyramid of evil contemplation could have saved him.

The reason this review is so focused on the characters is because the plot and action (what little there is) are treated as afterthoughts, and atmosphere is nonexistent. The biggest testament of the story’s poor writing is that significant events are forgettable while still reading. Not something that should be happening in an ET Go Home setup. Ex, Cryus & Elara’s accident: I completely forgot about it until she was discussing the Popping, and even then the only detail I recalled before flipping back was the detached steering wheel. In retrospect, the book’s description is a huge red flag promising info-dumping above all else.

Overall, terrible, and I wouldn’t recommend it to even the most avid fan of teen/ya contemporary SFF.

I love this book. I think it is absolutely superb and that the characters are bloody brilliant and I love how J.M. has written them out.

I don't normally do book reviews but I just had to do one for this book. I follow J.M. on Instagram and I've seen everything that's going on in her account world so I know that a good chunk of the reviews on here are people coming to send trash to her book because they don't agree with J.M.'s views.

I wanted to come here and review because I had something to say to those people posting fake reviews. I may not agree entirely with J.M.'s views on certain things but at least I'm mature enough to write an honest fucking review for her book. What you are doing could cause J.M. to lose so many potential readers and that is just terrible because she put hard time into writing her books.

I absolutely loved Seeker of Time and I mean that with all of my heart, if you are seeing this review and are on the hedge about whether or not to buy the book let me just tell you that a good majority of those one star reviews are fake reviews simply meant to hurt J.M. and that the actual book is awesome, it's greatly developed and I enjoyed it a lot. So if you want the book then go ahead and buy it because you won't regret the choice.

Just because you don't like an author's views doesn't mean you have to trash their work. This book is awesome and I stand by that statement for forevermore. J.M. has kept me alive when I have wanted to hurt myself in ways unimaginable and just because she told us her views on things, just because I may not agree with them, it does not mean I have to be immature and come to stomp on her wonderful book.

Thank you.

This author is racist, sexist, transphobic (she finds it funny purposely misgendering people), LGBTQ-phobic, anti-Semitic, and is crying that she's being "oppressed" because she's being called out for her harmful behavior and actions towards marginalized groups. She claims that she's being "canceled" because she's a white cis-het women when it reality she does and says harmful things.

She also claims (on her Instagram in a reel) that her books aren't being picked up by publishers because they're not diverse enough when in reality they're just poorly written. I've read fanfics written by 16-year-olds that were better than this poor excuse of a book. It's an off brand Twilight.

I'm blown away by this urban fantasy, science fiction, and romance novel starring the delightful characters Elara, Cyrus & Jax! The author enthralls us with her story, which includes relevant characters with typical struggles, yet there's something else....

"Once I stopped focusing on what I found to be his faults, I began to see him in a lighter way," ~ I love how the author teaches lessons and morals to the reader through the growth of the characters!

Each of us could learn a lesson from Elara, she's such an amazing and typical young lady, quite possibly could be my daughter, your daughter! Excellent job! All too often in life we judge others, critique them and try to change them; when in reality we should just accept them. Such an amazing journey Elara is on and I enjoyed riding along, as she developed into the character she needed to be for the story!

But wait, not only did I fall in love with Elara, she's captivating, but what about Cyrus and Jax? OMG, such amazing characters! Girls everywhere are going to <3 them both!

Eager to read the next book in the series, I'm hooked as a reader and as a teacher, this book will be in my library for my 6th graders to read, as the book will develop as they do, growing along with it.

I was super excited to curl up and planned to take my time reading this book, but as it turned out, I Couldn't Put It Down! The writer has you on the edge of your seat from the beginning. It has been a long while since I have read a book that was such a page turner! It was written so vividly and well, my surroundings melted away as I felt absorbed into the story, like I was a fly on the wall watching all the elements unfold and characters develop. I LOVED the messages of selflessness, empathy, encouraging others, compassion and acceptance that really spoke into some of the areas in my own life. With so much junk out there, I don't read or watch much. It's a true blessing to read a book that is safe and intended to put positive messages in the world we live in.

I had the pleasure of listening to this book on Audible, narrated by the author. Her voice! It was a fulfilling experience to hear the story told to me, and told so well. Seeker of Time is a debut novel and it radiates all the freshness and vitality that only a well written First can have.

The three protagonists are diverse in character yet all connected, all relatable in their own unique ways. The story rips along... a real page-turner.

I found myself back in high school one moment, immersed in classes, worried about boys and the brunt of popular girls' sarcasm. The next moment I'm embracing a higher purpose, drawn into another planet's destiny, one that make existence a matter of life and death.

Full of well orchestrated contrasts between the ordinary and the supernatural, I cheered loudly for Elara and I think you will too.

And that ending?

I know only one thing for sure: As soon as I post this review, I'm off to buy the next book in the series.

4.5 out of 5. A most excellent debut novel.

Unless you count A Wrinkle in Time, I’d only ever read adult science fiction, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Seeker of Time. Now that I’ve finished, I will say that the story had an interesting premise about the new girl in town uncovering two life-altering secrets, each stunning in their own way. It meandered a little at the beginning but steadily picked up pace until it reached a sprint towards the end. Once the secrets were revealed, Elara’s story really got going. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by the role Cyrus played, as I was expecting something different, something more typical. I was glad to be wrong. Also, Jax! How cool would it be to be a Seeker?

SOT comes across as more of a character story than an action one. That’s not to say nothing happens because it does, but it sets up for the meat of the story. All in all, a solid start to the series!
