If you like big buts, there’s one at the end of this review.

This was an achingly dull book with elements of a much better book sprinkled in. The stories were compelling, and he seems like a lovely person, so I kept hoping for something more. But the bulk of the book was so trite and boring that I had to force myself to finish it.

Have you ever been in a work meeting with no real content that somehow lasted an hour? This book felt like that; I’ve never seen so many meaningless business buzzwords mashed together. Plus, the cover should say that this is for traditionally employed managers, because there was rarely even a nod to other types of work. Most of the advice was common sense or otherwise well known. The few interesting thoughts didn’t have much practical advice behind them.

BUT! If you’re a manager at a medium to large company, perhaps this would be useful for you.

I really enjoyed this book for some of the tips and tricks and general advice Welby deployed. Particular stories like the priceless vase breaking because of an awkward performance stood out. I found the stories of what about child abuse to be very disturbing and while I have no right to judge any family, it still stood out in a jarring way for me. While this aspect seems to have had a happy ending, at least within the context of the book but I feel as thought it is only partial.

The Author seems like a lovely person, and this was well written. But I didn't personally feel like I got that much out of it. There was a lot of focus on creative leadership in group situations, but not as much on the individual experience. I appreciated some of the stories and vulnerability, but again I just didn't feel like I connected much to the material.

While I found the subject and Altidor's anecdotes interesting, there were plenty of times that this book dragged. Worth a read, for sure, but I'm glad I checked it out from the library and didn't add it to my bookshelf.

I love how the author lists caring as number one in the framework of creative courage.
Great read… timing is everything.
